I have been searching for a good Pub in Thousand Oaks ever since Brendan's closed .. where Selvin's currently rests. The restaurant has a great feel to it !! Upon being seated in our booth, the aroma was wonderful ! Our service was great and so friendly ! We ordered the Scotch Eggs, the Shepard's Pie, and a basket of fish & chips ! Everything was cooked and seasoned perfectly ! The Scotch Eggs had great consistency .. Nice little crunch on the outside while the inside was hot, yet, not overcooked. Shepard's Pie is one of my favourite dishes and this was so hearty and delicious !! The beef was a-plenty, while the veggies had a nice proportion, in comparison ! The fish had a great warm batter which was light and crispy with a nice, fresh inner bite, while the chips were hot with great seasoning !! So glad I found this little gem ! I think the fish and chips here was just ok. It was a bit on the oily side though. The peas kind of tasted like the frozen peas you get in the supermarket. The fries was pretty good. Absolutely enjoyed this place. We ordered the chicken curry with 1/2 rice and 1/2 fries, excellent. We also ordered the shepards pie. This was also very good and the vegetables on the side were cooked and seasoned well. For a Saturday afternoon we were surprised there weren't more people there. Came to this nice british pub, for lunch yesterday. What I ordered was terrible full of grease bacon salty, bread tasted as if it was fried, all I could taste was grease I am from England. I don't know how it took so long for me to find this place. It is fantastic. Traditional English comfort food with a bar that feels like a British pub (Smithwicks and Boddingtons on tap!). I've been coming to Crown and Anchor for a good 10 years or so - mainly to stop and have a Stella, or sometimes get a full british breakfast which is hard to come by. The breakfast is legit. It's also super fun during the World Cup! This review however is highlighting their Chicken Curry. Curry has become very much a part of British food & I'm a bit picky. After seeing a few reviews that raved about it - I started to crave it and wanted to try it. I absolutely LOVED it. Chicken was moist, the curry gravy was tasty. I was in the area for Christmas and happened across this pub. What a find, such a fun neighborhood bar with a distinct British twist. On this particular day we were attentively served by Michael. Our visit did not include food. What a treasure this Michael N., personality for days, he really added to our experience. They have a full bar and even a little dining area if you go during the right time of the day. Another great aspect, they have a private outside patio area. The service was not very good. We got there early, before the dinner crowd. It took a very long time for the beer to be served after we ordered it. Been wanting to try this place out and finally got the chance to. This has a good location with plenty of parking. They had a nice big patio and then they have a restaurant side and the pub side. We sat on the pub side at the bar. The place had plenty of seating on both sides. It was cold out, so nobody was sitting on the patio. I liked that they have a decent selection of nonalcoholic beers, including Guinness. We had the toad n the hole and the bangers and mash. The bangers and mash were excellent, although I do wish it was served with peas instead of baked beans. The toad n the hole was such a unique dish. I grew up making Yorkshire puddings in tiny muffin tins, it's by far my favorite British food. So I was excited to see this giant Yorkshire pudding, and it did not disappoint. The dish had plenty of chunks of bangers sliced up with a lot of potatoes and smothered in gravy. This dish is an A+ in my book. The service was also excellent as were the ambiance and value. Been coming here since I moved around the corner about 8 years ago. The food is generally really good but they seem to be going the same way as everyone else. Prices have gone way up from just last year. A year ago the chicken sandwich was $14 and now it's $19 and the portion sizes are smaller less chicken and less fries on the plate. The service is ususally really good but the customers are all the local drunks and are annoying. Someone also needs to do something about the bathrooms. They have smelled like sewage for years. If you're an anglophile or you simply love all things British, you're going to find the environment, amenities, and decor exceptionally inviting. The staff is truly friendly and warm. And the food is truly good: keeping an authentic English menu in the United States is probably a little difficult. An order of Fish and Chips will hit the spot. The servings are ample and the fish is rich in flavor - not overwhelmed by breading. This was a go-to repeat order for us - but on a second visit we ordered additional items, including the Scotch Egg, the English Breakfast, and a salad: we asked the waitress for her recommendation for the latter and on her advice tried the Chinese Chicken Salad. The Scotch Egg was very good, probably worth ordering again: the sausage meat and breading around the egg had good taste and nice texture - overall the combination of ingredients delivers subtlety in flavor and a fair serving. The English breakfast was a win in some specific respects: the British back bacon, the grilled British banger, and the grilled tomato were tasty and loyal to the real deal in England - I was asked how I wanted the eggs and chose over-easy, though that's interchangeable with sunny side up in most places I've had a fry-up back in the UK - frankly, I don't expect any other kind of egg form with this dish (other than those two) and feel cooking the eggs any other way would betray its authenticity; I chose wheat toast but they had a good selection of other breads. Regrettably, they were out of Heinz baked beans, and it seems mushrooms and black pudding are never served with the fry-up at Crown & Anchor. One of the most dinstinguishable items in a good English breakfast is the black pudding, though this isn't served everywhere in the UK so you can't hold any restaurant to this standard. It's truly a home-run if you find an English breakfast in the US that includes this (and even better if you can add white pudding, which is more of an Irish thing). The breakfast wasn't a disappointment - it was very good - but it would be even better if it included these details. The reason I give Crown & Anchor a fair rating comes down to the salad. It was truly great - the mandarin oranges and the grilled chicken were truly good - the chicken in particular had a great grilled taste. But we didn't finish our salad when we found a hair in it. It was embedded in the salad, not sitting on the surface. We were told the cook is bald. The hair was dark - my wife is blonde and my dark hair is very short (I'm in the military) so we know it wasn't ours - specifically because it was tangled in the salad itself and was fairly long. We would have been fine if they had discounted or removed the item from the bill - or maybe if they had made a new salad. But we got a full bill. It was regretful to tip 15% rather than the 20% minimum we give for good service. Both times we have been there (for take out and this second time for dine-in) the staff has been very friendly and cordial; it seemed odd they didn't make an accomodation in light of this small inconvenience. We weren't interested in who in the restaurant was at fault because this wasn't intentional - we just wished some courtesy had been extended. That said - these kind of courtesies are becoming as antiquated as Old Blighty and as rare as ice cubes in Europe. read more

What used to be a nice, fresh, full portion of an entree salad has turned into a tiny, Denny's side-salad sized dinner. That's $17 for a "dinner" salad that's not only the size of a side salad, but it's the 3rd time their salads have been served to us with nasty, old, slimy, wilted lettuce. So gross. For 1/4 of a lettuce bag (retails for $1) and 1/2 of a single chicken breast (where this portion maybe retails for $2.50), I'm paying !17 plus tip for an "entree" that doesn't even leave me feeling full --- let alone satisfied.
