the 40th and Market CFC is my jam, yo. Especially ever since they upgraded their biscuits. I swear, the old ones had some kind of a sad, glazed muffin thing going on. For those of you not in the know, Crown can loosely be considered a chain. But, your experience with Crown will vary VASTLY depending on what location you go to. My litmus for whether I'm going to enjoy my Crown experience is whether the person working there is cracking jokes and smiling. 40th and Market has got you covered. Plus, the hood has gotten nice enough that the bullet proof glass you see at most other Crowns doesn't seem necessary to them. Anyway, the guys who work the counter here are really chill for having to deal with last call BS that makes most other joints around the city (hello unnamed steak places in South Philly and late night fast food chains) look completely outmatched. I don't know their names, but they're always smiling, always polite, and everyone who walks into the place likes them. You know why? Cause their chicken's the shit. Get a "picnic box." That's 6 pieces with 2 sides and 2 biscuits. Get the dirty rice (rice and beans with spices), and collard greens, or mac and cheese. Shoot, even the Jamaican beef patties, though clearly not made in-store, are full of meaty goodness. Take it home, eat it all while watching reruns of Futurama, and pass out upstairs. Other things that kick ass on their menu include their chicken sandwiches, their wings, and Hershey's ice cream - unless the sign is lying. I stopped in for a quick dinner 2 nights this week. The service was great, the food was good and the price is just right. The wings are good. They normally give you a dinner roll with all chicken orders but I requested no bread and was given an extra wing at no charge!! If I could only get fried chicken from one place for the rest of my life, Crown Fried would definitely be the place to go. I've never been to a place that can so consistently nail a crispy outside and a tender inside. Dark or white, thigh or breast, the breading is always consistently thin (yet substantial), the meat is always juicy, never greasy, and the skin on the chicken is always done perfectly (it's worth eating every time). Shame on my stomach for not being able to eat more than 5 pieces at once! I've had CFC at larger-scale events and have picked up a 5-piece combo box as late-night snacks. Either way, the quality is always consistent, and the sides are classics that you can never go wrong with. The collared greens are a personal favorite. Hands down the best fried chicken I have ever had that is sold from a store, and almost as good as the chicken my friends' grandmothers back home in Georgia make!! The skin and breading are perfectly crispy and not too greasy, and the meat itself still manages to stay tender. Chicken is damn good here, I've spent considerable time in the Carolinas and Georgia and this is still some of the best fried chicken I've had in a long time. Sides are delicious too, the Collared Greens as well as the Mac and cheese are out of this world. Beats the pants off that hipster joint Wishbone in all respects. Probably the only competitor in the area is Federal Doughnuts, and even then it's a toss up until you consider Crown is open until 3 A.M. then Federal gets roasted. Well worth the visit. One star for the semi-sketch area. Their sell is "soul food" -- most people come here for the 5-,10-, or 20-piece chicken meal w sides of collard greens, mashed potatoes, and mac & cheese. The sandwiches are my thing. The chicken is always freshly fried and tastes surprisingly like real chicken, especially considering that it's a deal ($3.50), and topped with fresh lettuce and a dash of mayo and hot sauce.
