It was Memorial Day weekend and a tenant at my uncle's rental call Saturday evening, stating someone tried to gain access to the rental property by partially breaking off the deadbolt lock on the gate. The lock was still functional, and everyone was able to get in and out of the property. A permanent fix is to replace the deadbolt lock. I called Crown Locksmith that morning and got a call back from David within a few hours. Davis was the only locksmith on duty for Crown and he had a full schedule. Its really nice to have a local Hardware Store in the Outer Richmond, and though the shop is not very large but what it lacks in size it makes up in using every inch of wall space to display an extensive amount of merchandise. For me this trip was to obtain some gear for the Bathroom, and even if the price paid might have been slightly higher then I would have expected at a Home Depot it also meant I did not have to drive to Daily City and back saving me both time and gas. I found the staff to be helpful, polite, and prompt. This is not where you should come for custom paints, but they do have top notch Lock Smith if needed. For me its easy to suggest Crown Hardware for basic Hardware that you need in a pinch, or if you need a local Lock Smith. read more

Kenny was on time and worked efficiently to rekey several locks and to install 3 new lock sets after master set of keys were lost for our set of flats. Got locked out of the house early in the morning after coming home from walking my dog as the key that my landlord recently got made by Crown broke in the lock. It's only been 3 days since I moved in. I waited until 9a for the shop to open. They told me to speak with Linda. Waited 15 min as she finished up with another customer and took another call. She had a technician come out to the house to extract the broken piece with a plier and make me a new key. When the technician started writing up the invoice I asked if I still would have to pay since the faulty key was made by them. He said yes and that the only thing he could do was make me another key for free. I told him I understand that he probably wasn't able to make that call and kindly asked to speak with his manager. He said to call the shop so I did. I spoke with Linda who when I started to explain who I was rudely exclaimed, "I know who you are! I don't care! You're refusing to pay my technician!" Mind you, I tried to be as friendly and polite as possible when speaking to both her and the technician who were both very brusque (I work in public service so I'm especially conscientious about that). But she curtly told me the I would have to pay, that they weren't responsible for any keys made, that it was probably a faulty lock, and to have my landlord foot the bill. She said the only thing she could do was offer me a neighborhood discount (which brought the bill down form $94 to $84) which I would've gotten anyway since I only live 2 blocks away. I paid the technician and told him I'll take up on his offer of the second key, to which he replied "you know I'm having a really shitty week and you just added to it so I'm not going to get you that second key. " Wow. Really professional. But I guess that explains why he didn't even say hello when he first arrived. In fact, nobody at the shop really said hello. And not once did anyone offer an apology for the faulty key let alone any sympathy that I'd been locked out of the house with my dog since 7a. I won't be returning again. These guys who work there a absolute jerks. I called to ask questions. And with any customer service- you know customers are not knowledgeable of the product. When I asked to clarify an answer he spun quickly- his tone was condescending, mean and most of all like we were existing his time. Nice little neighborhood hardware store. The guys that work there are extremely friendly and always try to be helpful. Is a full-service locksmith on-premise and they have a lot of oddball parts for very old locks which is great! Even though there a small mom-and-pop store their prices are very good. They even have jars of loose nuts and bolts that are very very cheap. I always check when I just need one or two little oddball screws or bolts you can save a lot of money. Had an issue with our gate and called at 9:45am to see if someone could come same day to have it looked at. The women on the phone was hesitant to committing to have someone come by same day but called back saying someone would be there within 15 min. by 11:30 my gate was fixed and i can sleep well tonight. it was a bit pricy but I didn't ask what the cost would beforehand as I just wanted it fixed. FYI they charge a $45 onsite visit fee, $90/hr labor (but pro-rate to the 30 min), parts and tax. read more

These guys are wonderful! I had a great experience with them. Last night the key to my 1996 Toyota Camry snapped off in the ignition. Fortunately, if I stuck what was left of the key in the switch, the car would still start. I called eight locksmiths before I called Crown and they solved the problem with the best price, $44. Here is the saga. Last night I checked Yelp for locksmiths and found Metro. I emailed them and they replied that they didn't work on cars. They recommended Locksmith Central. I called them and they quoted me $175! I checked Yelp again and tried Mike's Locksmith, they have no shop. I tried Lockworld and they told me over the phone, $45 if it's easy to get out, $90 if it isn't. I drove over there and when I got there they said the guy on the phone had misquoted me, it would be $90 no matter what. That didn't sit too well with me so I drove over to my mechanic's, Carlos, to see what he thought. He said he would have recommended Lockworld but after I told him what happened there he said try Warman's. I came home, and called Warman's. It took forever for someone to pick up, then I got put on hold, transferred to another line, and then disconnected. I called Pop-a-Lock and they said I would have to give my number and a locksmith would call me back with a quote. I realized they are only mobile and knew that would be higher so I declined. I called Hugo's Lock and Key and he was very nice but only made house calls and it was $90 minimum. Since I could drive the car I decided to keep calling. I called West Coast Emergency and he said $65. I decided to drive over there and lo and behold, I realized I had locked the good key in the car and the broken off key was all I had on my key ring so now I was locked out of the car. I called Triple A to open the car and the tow driver told me that I could drive the car like that forever, it's just that someone could steal it easily because a screwdriver would start it. You couldn't tell that part of the key was in there so I figured I'd wait a while on it although it made me kind of nervous that it might begin to not start. I went to Ace Hardware on Clement to get another key made and asked them if they could recommend anyone. They said Lockworld. I told them about the misquote and they said try Crown on Balboa. I decided to look up on the internet how to get a key out yourself and found several ways to do it, involving super glue, tiny saw blades, hemostats, bobby pins, paper clips, dental tools. I had already tried myself with tweezers and tiny pliers but there was nothing of the key to grasp. Not wanting to mess it up more I called Crown. Joe was the most helpful and friendly of any these guys I had talked to. He said $44 if it was easy. He said it might start for a while with it stuck in there but it could eventually wear out something in the lock, and then I'd be stuck. I drove it over there and Jesus tried first to get it out with little tools, then he said he could take the lock out, it would be easier, and it was still $44! He got the ignition out, the broken piece of key out, and everything back in place in under 15 minutes! My persistence paid off so if you don't want to waste a lot of time calling around, just call Crown in the first place. Now I know if I have any more lock problems I'll call Crown first. read more

Love this place!  I don't get some of the bad reviews.  Great service and they usually have what I need.  I always call ahead to make sure.  The locksmith fixed a broken 1920's thumb latch door handle in a couple days.  He didn't have the authentic hardware, but was able to source similar replacement parts.  He gave me a quick tutorial on how to install myself, (I wanted to do it myself).  These are down to earth regular folk.  No BS, no ass kissing, just solid forthright advice and service.  I'm happy to support local. read more

Crown Locksmith is one of those places you pass on the street, never notice until you need them, then realize you can't live without them. We visited Crown a few times while fixing a rental for help with a sticky deadbolt, repairing a gate lock and a lockout. Charlie and the team there always provided us with options considering time, cost and how we are not handy at all. It's so easy for businesses to just default to sending a tech, but it's not always cost effective for everyone and we are so lucky to have a resource who can provide us with options. For example, when we had the sticky deadbolt, Charlie gave us options to try to repair ourselves, replace ourselves or have a tech come out to look at it. He suggested we lubricate the lock first which worked, saving us the time and expense of changing the lock. For the gate lock, the team walked us through changing the lock at the store, located the correct part and even helped us trouble shoot when we couldn't install it ourselves. When our tenants moved in and got locked out due an old knob that stopped working, they were able to send someone out the next day for a reasonable price. We will definitely visit Crown anytime we have lock questions or issues, it's so nice to know there are honest and reliable neighborhood businesses we can count on! read more

This is going to be a short review. We needed a spare key fast and this place was around the corner from where we were staying. The staff was nice and the price was cheap. It's not even worth saying that parking is a premium because that's pretty much the entire city. Extremely disappointed in being ripped off after having an account with Crown for at least 10 years. It seems they care more about $$$$ now than keeping customers satisfied or at all. In a nutshell, our lock wouldn't turn with the key, the Crown guy come out, pops off the handle and basically sprays WD 40 in it saying it was dirty. Then he charged $88 for that! Are you kidding me!? A lock we purchased and had installed by them fails and they charge us almost $100 for 10 minutes!? I actually spoke with a different locksmith who was fixing a different problem, he saw the door handle and lock which had been done by Crown, and when I told him what they did and charged he was shocked but also said they are known to do business that way. I can understand being charged for at least the service charge to come out and check it, but being charged over $40 to spray WD 40?! SMDH Well, I was referred to Complete Security that also does the Medco security key system. I will be checking into them to see if they are more customer service oriented and care about keeping long term clients! read more

I had gone here recently with my roommate to get a new house key made for me...He said he was willing to pay for me to a get a decorated and tacky key so I was there with the staff who were helpful enough in helping find one that may or may not be the cut for the key. While I was debating between the leopard print or the Oakland A's one; the guy helping me mentioned he could not do the cut for the A's one- so I went with the other. Not even 2 minutes later, I had a new key. And was informed, yes that he could have cut the A's key- he just didn't want to 'cause he was a Giants fan. I've used Crown Lock many years ago, and had great service...but not using a locksmith very often means one has little to compare against...so they did a great job last time and everything worked and I was happy. Fast forward a decade to last week, the gate to my house was not closing properly. Called Crown the next day but they were fully booked, so I tried the next locksmith company on my list. The locksmith called and said he would be there in 30 min, but took 65 minutes. He removed the 1 side of the gate lock system (and quoted me $375+ for it - yikes - but I needed it done), and then finds out it's the other side of the lock (connected to the electrical buzzer in the house) that actually needed to be replaced. He went off to 'find' that part and never returned! The next morning I called Crown Lock again, and luckily they managed to squeeze me in when I told them the horror story of the previous day with the other locksmith company. Michael came out, fixed the gate, and the whole lot cost me just over 50% of what the other locksmith company was going to charge. He also showed me his DCA license (the other locksmith co hadn't). I was the fool for not asking because, as Michael so rightly stated, we are entrusting the security of our homes etc to someone changing/fixing locks etc - so they better be licensed and checked out by the FBI. I knew we were safe with Crown Lock. That is a good feeling. Plus they did a great job, in good time, at a good price.....and a big plus is that it is easy to communicate with them.... read more

We have a vintage door lock, which Warman staff fiddled with years ago - they rekeyed and charged for the work despite never getting the lock to work. I assumed the lock was a lost cause. However, a recent contractor suggested Crown, so I booked an appointment last month. Joe showed up on time and was highly knowledgeable about vintage locks. Within an hour, he had the door + gate rekeyed and lubricated. For the first time in years, we have full access via the locks again. Couldn't be happier and will definitely be using Crown Hardware again for any locksmith needs! read more

Went in to check on a part and pricing. Wasn't sure I was gonna use it but wanted to have it on hand when I started the job just in case. The clerk told me if I didn't use it I could return it. So I paid too much and bought it. I ended up not using it and went back to return it. The same clerk was there and said he had to check on something. He came back with who I think was the owner or manager and was told no returns on tools. It was clear it had not been used and I had the receipt. If I had known that was a policy I would have went some where else and paid less for it and been able to return it. Either way they got the sale. Will be going to the Standard Plumbing Ace Hardware on Geary from now on. read more

Located within a block of the Balboa theater, this place is an uphill walk from the beach, coffee joints, and restaurants. The staff is extremely helpful and even gave me the heads up about the salt & pepper chicken at Purple Kow-I know. Seriously, check this place out. I love this place. I'm always working on some stupid vehicle then missing some damn metric nut, some driveway cleaner, a universal joint for a socket, a pushbroom, duct tape, fiberglass and resin, primer and paint... I don't know how they manage to have EVERYTHING I've ever needed for whatever job in such a small building. And I was in here so regularly when I was putting the Ducati back together after the crash, that when I finally finish it, I had to bring it by for them to take pics. I know the guys here, they're in a punk band I'm going to see tomorrow night. They're nice dudes, they know their shop, they can make keys, I think they're also connected to Crown Locks on the next block. They've saved my ass a lot of times. I entered the store with the assumption I needed to replace not only the lock, but the entire front door handle set for my 1948 house. A had neighbor recommended Crown Lock as a good source for locksmiths familiar with oldies like mine. I was mentally prepared to drop several hundred dollars. I explained to the young clerk that my key was sticking and it felt like the tumblers were out of alignment. He sold me a can of spray for $10 and my front door lock works great! Five star service, but one star removed because they are closed on Saturdays and only open until 5:30 during the week. I had to leave work early to get there before closing. Maybe now that they are moving in with Crown Hardware (a block away), they will keep the same store hours as the hardware store. read more

We have called upon Crown Locksmith & Safe twice for our needs, and both times they have given us incredibly good and fast service. In an especially critical instance, just as we were about to leave on an extended trip, we found that we needed to rekey every lock in our house, effectively changing the locks on all of our exterior doors and gates, of which there are in our case 9, plus 2 outdoor gates to the backyard. Several of these locks were so old and rusted that they needed to be repaired or entirely replaced. Despite the critically short time we had, Crown Locksmith was able to send out the same locksmith who had previously helped us rekey a safe in our basement. This locksmith, Dave, was incredibly prompt and incredibly thorough, managing to do everything we needed in a couple of hours. And the price for all this (including 15 replica keys for friends and family) was incredibly reasonable, less than I had feared it would be. Locally owned Crown Hardware is one of a disappearing breed of comprehensively-stocked, well-managed local hardware stores. Each of the staff know the store inside and out, as opposed to Home Depot, where, if you can find staff, often say "that isn't my department." This place is old school in the best way. In all except the very largest purchases, prices are reasonable. The drive to Home Depot, the parking, and trying to find someone who knows what they're talking about just aren't worth the hassle. Shop locally, and if Crown doesn't have it, they'll recommend another local shop. For keys, garage door stuff and lock related items, go down the street to Crown Lock. read more

While entertaining my visiting parents, my dad decided there were a few things in my apartment that could use some fixing. I know what you're thinking...Isn't that that the landlords job? The front gate lock in our house needed to be replaced/re-keyed. Same day service call went through without a hitch, showed up on time. The service guy re-keyed it and replaced the lock in 30 minutes. He also helped re-drill the opening of the hole to the gate, because that was causing the lock to stick sometimes. They were just a tad big higher in price for a service call then another place I called, but they were local and closer to our house, so I decided to go with them. read more
