Quaint little Mexican restaurant. Clean with friendly waitstaff/hostess. We were seated immediately and approached for drink orders pretty quick. Not Tex Mex but more of your traditional Mexican cuisine. I had the carne guisada enchiladas. Tasty! The avocado margarita was sweet-- really good, and I'm not into frozen drinks. I also ordered the chipotle brownie. It was ok but the more I ate it, the better it became. I think hint of chipotle I got at he end of each bite made me like it more. Would have been better with a scoop of ice cream on top. Salsa and chips were really good! Queso was not that great. Servings were a fairly decent size. I was pleasantly stuffed. read more

Family Visit spot #6: My family was in town this past week and we did A LOT of drinking and eating. These reviews are a series of those drinking and eating spots. We had my brother's graduation dinner here. We were a little nervous because they don't take reservations and they tend to get packed. It was Friday at 6pm. We called in advance to warn them of a 15 person party. When we got there a little before 6:00, there were only 4 cars in the parking lot and they had a table waiting for us. We had one waiter (Joe!) for all of us and he was amazing...totally on it and patient. They stored our cake in the fridge too and served it up at the end of our dinner. Maybe it's me, maybe I'm spoiled by Arizona, but whatever it is, I just can't get with Mexican food in this city. I've tried quite a few places, many that come highly Yelp recommended, but each place just leaves me.. whelmed (neither over nor under.) Curra's was no exception. First of all they charged us for chips & salsa, which blew my mind, but we weren't about to go without them. The margaritas we ordered were pretty tasty, yet also about a dollar more than our entree... odd. The best part of my dinner was probably the charro beans, which I paid $.99 to upgrade to. It seems Curra's likes to surcharge. They do have a nice patio & it was nice that having to pay for salsa at least gave us a variety to choose from. The food was fresh, especially the Coca Cola & orange-juice infused carnitas, plus the portions don't leave you with an uncomfortable bloaty feeling Mexican food sometimes can. Would I go back? I have no idea how it is possible that I have never reviewed Curra's! It is practically my favorite restaurant in Austin. If you want good breakfast tacos, a great spot for lunch, a delicious dinner and margarita - Curra's is the place for you. They have the BEST food here. My personal favorites are the veggie fajitas (and I'm not a vegetarian) and the carnitas. The veggie fajita plate is usually large enough to last me two meals but the real reason that I love it is because it is stocked FULL of veggies - eggplant, mushrooms, zucchini, squash, roasted peppers and tomatoes. Everything is super fresh and grilled to perfection. The toppings that come with the plate are also outstanding - lettuce, pico, guacamole and sour cream. It doesn't get much better than this... Except of course for the carnitas. Oh, the carnitas! Sweet, tangy, juicy with the perfect flavor of pork. I always recommend this dish to out of town visitors and every single time they leave happy! Ask about their drink specials. Their drinks off the menu are great but often they have specials that are twice the size with special ingredients that make them twice as yummy. read more

Lets start this out with one thing you need to know about me. I'm a simple simple girl. I like cheese enchiladas. With cheese onions and more cheese. And chips and salsa. That's it. That's being said, I cannot complain about the pork tacos of sorts that I had. The beans, gross. The rice, gross. The avocado margarita was way overrated but good, just not worth the price. I really like coming here for my tex-mex fix. When I'm in the mood for some guilty pleasure, we order the french fries topped with chorizo and cheese...I know, it's a heart attack...but it makes me feel better that I do this every once in a while :) I get the carnitas tacos and they are delicious! Authentic delicious Mexican food in a convenient spot in South Austin, right off Oltorf. 1. The food was really good! I was also told it's very authentic by my Mexican friends. 2. The Avocado Margarita was really good, but I did not find it as amazing as the reviews made it sound. Still, really good and worth a try. 3. The Currita Margarita was really weird - sour and strange but still pretty good! 4. I ordered the Cochinita Pibil which was very flavorful and the tortillas were great. 5. The beans did not impress me though as they were cold and rather flavorless. 6. The server did not bring me silverware which was pretty annoying. 7. ***Top 3 Tex-Mex restaurants in Austin. Curra's Grill is classic delicious Tex-Mex. Located in South Austin it's a tiny restaurant with an outdoor patio and it's always busy and well worth the wait. The best item on the menu is the Enchiladas Con Chile Colorado which is pork tips with jack cheese and it's covered in a delicious chipotle sauce. The chips are on demand and a great way to enjoy the patio while chatting with friends. Tourist nots: The most famous item is the avocado margarita, and it's the one item that I've had there that I would say it's just above average, but it's well worth trying at least once especially for all those avocado lovers. read more

The lamb empanadas were not very good. The queso is average and the asadero enchiladas with chilirio are not bad. The sauce on the enchiladas was the best part. Wait staff was not very attentive and almost seemed put out by our presence. My fiance also really likes a chorizo, egg and cheese taco, which is also delicious, yet very greasy. And they have really great coffee. Geez, to bad I live in Arlington and Curra's is a 4 hour drive, but this is where I go to get my taco al pastor fix. I have yet to find a place in the DFW Metroplex that can serve up an authentic taco al pastor complete with pineapple. Pair the taco plate with either a Mexican beer or the Oaxacan coffee and you are set for a fine meal. Make sure you save room for the platanos - fried plantains served with cream and goat cheese. I mean, meh. There are a number of good things here, and I can't lay any claims to its authenticity, but pretty much everything I've had here has been good, but nothing to write home about. The avocado margaritas are novel, and good, but I wouldn't call them *amazing*. It's just that, if I'm going to consume the number of calories in an avocado, I'd like to be able to actually taste the avocado. I will say that the tacos al pastor are pretty delicious, but (please don't hit me for saying this), I think the ones I had at Anna's Tacqueria in Boston were better. I mean, this is *Texas*. My friend and I were recommended here by another Austin local and this place didn't disappoint. The only bad thing was that the location was kind of tucked away, and the parking was very, very small. We had to park about half a block down in front of someone's house; however, it was well worth the walk and wait. The wait was decent for lunchtime, but the food was great. I had the enchiladas, and from looking at mine and other people's, it looked great. Mine tasted great as well, perfect flavor, wonderful presentation, and fresh ingredients. If you're in the area, I would definitely recommend a visit. When I come back to Austin, I'll make sure to visit again. read more

Great little place. I was referred here by one of my "Mexican" friends. I've been a few times. Its really a great place to eat. Service was a little on the slow end, but they were busy. The waitress was quite nice and the food was really good. I had the Veggie Fajitas and they were amazing. Loved their rice as well. They do offer alcohol as well. I guess the main negative factor to consider is the lack of parking. Its a pretty popular place from how packed it always is and they are doing construction on the street infront of this place so there are about a half dozen to dozen fewer parking spots so you have to park around the corner on a side street. read more

I love this place. Nice and laid back. Great great salsa, almost addicting it's so good. It's the cumin they put in it. Big fan of their ceviche (snaper and shrimp), their enchiladas with colorado sauce is out of this world good, and for breakfast, their egg and chorizo plate is great. read more

It took me 7 years of driving by this place to actually stop by and check it out. And I'm glad I did. The parking lot is always full but there is plenty of street parking nearby. What we got: Steak nachos especiales, carnitas plate, and al pastor taco plate Make sure you have a big appetite when you order the carnitas plate! It's a LOT of food. Add that to the 3 basket of chips/salsa you just devoured and you will be struggling to finish your entree. The al pastor was amazing too. Probably the best al pastor I've tasted in Austin. Came here the first time because it's literally down the street from where I live. Came here the second time because bf's family was in town from Kansas and it was a convenient, quick tex mex option. Food is consistent but not quality. Ok service - a little slow and not very thorough, the space doesn't exactly look clean nor is it at all fancy or "nice". Most tex mex tastes the same to me - too much cheese, canned re-fried beans, bad guacamole. This kind of falls into that same category. I'd choose other tex mex places over this one unless I just want to go somewhere close to home. Overall it's forgettable but it isn't bad. You go, you eat, you leave. Nothing more, nothing less. So. Overall the food was fine. Not very memorable, though. Avocado margarita is good. My complaint: Ordered a side of chicken fajita meat. When we receive the entrees the runner attempts to confirm my side order of chicken as shredded. I correct him and say fajita, not shredded. About 20 minutes after getting our food he comes back and gives me shredded chicken anyway. I ask the waitress for fajita chicken, she takes the shredded back, returns about 10 minutes later and says; "that chicken is gonna take like 10 minutes to make. Are you sure you want it?" Seemingly with some attitude. Hm. Well at this point it's been at least 40 minutes since I originally ordered it. Could've had about 4 orders in that time... But whatevs. No chicken for me. Then the chicken was still on the bill. Long story short, food is just ok. Service could be better. Grab an avocado margarita if you find yourself here. read more

The food is not that great it's a little overpriced for what it is. The alcoholic drinks are definitively good though. I will go back for the avocado margarita but not for the food. So I woke up Saturday morning with a killer hangover, I guess that's my fault for going out so late and drinking like a fish. But when I have a killer hangover there is only one thing I want in the morning and it is Curra's breakfast tacos and the Oaxcan coffee. Curra's has definitely become a staple in my weekend lifestyle, to the point that I can frequent it twice in one weekend and maybe sometime during the week. Every time I go I order two breakfast tacos, chorizo, egg and cheese on flour and a coffee. The tacos are excellent, nice and warm when they get to your table and the borracho salsa is also warm which makes it even better. And the coffee, oh the coffee. Starbucks cannot even come close to this coffee. As for the service, I don't have problems with it. I know most of the waiters as it is. All around if you are looking for a place to go to cure the hangover and get some awesome breakfast, Curra's is the place to go. read more

Curra's is really close by where I live and I'd really love to love this place however, it's not the best mexican food I've ever had. First of all, no free chips???? Common! The food was tastey and service was okay. I'm a bit disappointed by their tortillas though. I've been there three times and each time, I'm just not really "wow"ed by this place. It's a good place to go but I think it's a bit too hyped up by Austinites. I think it's a place you'd go to a few times but not as a regular customer. Also, the parking situation is ridiculously bad. I've driven on Oltorf a million times and every time, someone is trying to back out onto the main road almost hitting other cars. When this place gets busy, good luck finding parking. read more

Okay, so this was great. I'm pretty picky about my Mexican food, but I was really impressed with Curra's. The salsa was really nicely seasoned, and worth paying for. My vegetarian tacos were flavorful, somewhat spicy, and perfect with more salsa. The corn tortillas were especially amazing, and I really loved the mushrooms in the taco. My friend was visiting from Maryland and wanted either a Tex-Mex or Texas BBQ. She said she wasn't in a carnivorous mood, so decided to check this place out. I love that this place had outdoor seating. I was impressed with the variety on the menu. Unlike most other Tex-Mex places in TX, the chips/salsa are not complimentary unless you purchase ceviche/queso/guac. We decided to get a small order of the shrimp and fish ceviche. The serving was quite large and more than enough to split 3-ways as an appetizer. I was disappointed with the ceviche - it didn't really have that great citrus flavor that I was hoping for. The quality of the fish was mediocre at best. The chips were thick cut and the salsa was decent with a little bit of kick. We were so hungry that we (read: I) wolfed down 2 basketful. (I am still slightly nauseous from the tortilla chip overload the next morning). I ordered the junior order (4) of veggie tamales with black beans/rice. They came out cold to the touch but I was so full already that I took them home in a take out box to be reheated for lunch the next day. My friend got the tacos al pastor plate with refried black beans (definitely recommend this - most places don't have this!). She got both red and yellow corn tortillas. I had never heard of a red corn tortilla - it was a little sweet to taste. She said that she really enjoyed it. My other friend ordered the carne guisada. He said it was so delicious - definitely hit the spot. We made friends with the diners at the next table. They were having quite a bit of fun... so much fun that the waitress had to cut one of them off. They said the margs were mediocre (definitely can find better ones throughout Austin). I'm mostly disappointed in this place because so many people had told me about "the best Mexican food in Austin", and it was mediocre compared to the expectations I had set. I'll give them points for their avocado margarita. They stepped outside the box with this one. But their michelada was sub-par compared to the rest the city has to offer, and nothing about their food set it apart from the other refried beans, rice, and chips I've tasted. Their specific dishes don't even deserve a review. It wasn't terrible, but don't believe the hype. It's fine for an average Friday night of drinking and downing chips, but don't expect the chefs to wow you. If average is what you're after, you can get it cheaper. read more

I'm not wild about the traditional Mexican food here. But I really like the more Cuban type stuff. The fish tacos are basically the only thing I get, with the bananas and rice on the side. I really like that and no where else offers this type of thing that I know of. I'm sure there could be better versions of the same dish if it existed. I love the avocado margaritas and tres leches too. Every time I get an out of town visitor I take them there just for the avocado margarita. I am in love with Curra's. I have no excuse why, after almost 7 years of living in Austin, I only started going there about 9 months ago, but now that I've discovered Curra's, I'm hooked. There are several things that set Curra's apart from other Austin tex-mex / mex restaurants, all of which happen to strike a chord with me. First, draft beer. And a great selection of draft beer at that! They are the only mex restaurant in Austin that I've been to with draft beer. At least that I can recall. They have great frozen margaritas too, they go down easy! Second, they have a killer vegetarian dish selection. Like several different things to choose from. My most recent discovery, which I get now EVERY time I go, is the bean tamales. Oh My God. I hadn't had a tamale since going vegetarian 2 years ago, and since discovering Curra's, I'm in heaven. They also have a variety of beans to pick from--their refried black beans are incredible. Third, their prices are great! I get the junior tamale plate, and I think it's $5.99!?!? When my husband and I go there, the bill is almost always under $30, and it includes at least 2 beers and a margarita. And there's usually food to bring home. So why not 5 stars? The parking situation is not good. And the recent construction on Oltorf has made it worse. Also, the service can be a little spotty--nothing Yelp worthy--but you occasionally get the waiter who walks by your table 3 times and doesn't check in to see if you want another margarita or a glass of water. read more

Truth be told, I came here for their famous avocado margaritas. These were good, but not anything I'd write home about. Or perhaps it was just my impatience grumbling after having to wait 25 minutes to get the drink. The food is a similar experience: tasty, but not exactly the award-winning fare they repeatedly advertise on their menus. What deserves an award, however, is the languidness of their servers. It wasn't even that busy, and we had to wait 25 minutes for drinks, and another 20 for our food. The server would just purposely avoid eye contact every time she passed by, as if she had no need of an extra tip. And if you don't like being surrounded by screaming toddlers, don't bother coming here. I tried the "Award-Winning Enchiladas", whose description on the menu deceptively mentioned no cheese, but yet came smothered in some melted mozzarella imitation substance that I tried, rather unsuccessfully, to remove. However, had they come without the cheese, I'm sure they would have elicited higher praise from me. read more

I can't tell you how sad I am that the McNeil location (right down the street from me) closed! Oltorf is such a long drive for Mexican, but this place is worth it every time. If you're looking for good tamales, this is the place. I've tried them several other places in Austin, and nothing can touch Curras. I think my only complaint about this place would be the parking. Especially during peak hours, it's impossible to find a spot and they are so small that many people will park over the line. read more

This is one of the most comfortable places in Austin for a low key bite to eat (breakfast and lunch). It's the kind of place you could go and read a newspaper by yourself with coffee and never feel rushed. I have been here dozens of times and I always get the breakfast tacos. For $1.50 they're a bargain and probably the reason I feel ripped off anytime anyone tries to charge $4 or $5 for a taco with a cute name. I've sampled their mole, migas, and several others dishes and they're all reliably great. I was there yesterday and my friend ordered some nachos. I've got to tell you they were the most attractive I've seen with giant chunks of chicken and steak. Excellent chips and salsa. Excellent coffee. Great shady outside seating. read more
