The best bbq I ever had hands down! I had the brisket, pulled pork, baked beans, and mac and cheese. My husband had the chicken bites. We loved all the sauce options on the table and tried every one to figure out what we liked best! We ended up with 3 dipping sauces and couldn't decide so we just kept changing up each bite with a different sauce! I'm so happy I found this gem right outside of the outer banks! We were blown away by how amazing everything was! The baked beans were too sweet for my likings but to each their own, it didn't even matter bc the bbq was the bomb! Perfect lunch spot when traveling to and from outer banks. The food is ready within a timely manner and tastes great for being a roadside restaurant. The variety of BBQ sauces is great! My husband and I stopped in to Currituck BBQ on our way home from an OBX vacation. We hadn't had any NC BBQ and we were wanting a taste before we left the state. He was happy with this place, but I was not. I ordered the pulled BBQ Chicken, and was given a pile of grisly leg and thigh meat. I had fried okra and mac and cheese as sides. The okra was dried out (sitting under a heat lamp too long?), but the mac and cheese was quite good. If you go there, that's my one recommendation. The overall atmosphere was loud and dirty.. the line for the bathroom was so long I opted to leave and find a gas station. This place would be best used for take-out... if only that were convenient. read more

Currituck Bar B Q is a "must stop" on our way coming into and out of the Outer Banks! My favorite is the pork bar b q. The small sandwich is just the right size, leaving just enough room for the peach cobbler. The staff is both efficient and friendly. Highly recommended!! read more

Awesome BBQ, and the Burnt ends was fantastic. We go to OuterBanks every year, today was the beginning of new tradition. We will stop here on the way home every year. Very fast and friendly service. Travelers like to stop here but not many locals eat here and there's a reason. The pork is plain, bland, with no flavor. All the flavor comes from a squirt bottle you use at your table. Definitely not the right way to do BBQ. Flavor needs to be cooked in. That's the only way to do it. If you like this junk you don't know what real BBQ is. read more

About once a month I travel to North Carolina for business purposes. Granted, my business doesn't take too long so when I travel to NC, I have to make it worth my time to travel there. This is where Currituck BBQ company comes into play. Even though this place is small the business sits just off the main road that takes all the people from NY on down to the outer banks. With NC being known for their pulled pork in the vinegar based sauce makes this hole in the wall dive on the map for what my father used to say, Prime Real-estate for those who are so wanting to try what most locals have known their entire life. Those of us who are willing to take on the long grueling hours of smoking a pig is that we take it very seriously. Usually down to the homemade BBQ pit. But with hubby not being a local, he purchased me an electric one. LOL...... back to this place. Yes, it has the hole in the wall, dive feel to it. But that's cool. The building may be old, but most reputable BBQ joints in NC buildings are old. My guess is an old smoker is like an old skillet. Once it's seasoned, broken in, the better the meat tastes. It's 50% smoker and 50% talent. If you don't have talent working over that hot smoker, you might as well give it up because to smoke a whole pig takes about 24 hours. What this boils down to is that during the summer months. This place is slammed. Don't get me wrong all your tourists out there, but I can't handle the long line to get that perfectly smoked shredded pork, they serve briskets, chicken, turkey, any type of meat that can be smoked. But I'm a Carolina girl first and foremost so I'm all about the piggy! How do I handle it during the tourist season. I purchase pork ribs or a boston butt, prep it and set out to cook it myself. Do I make my own sauce? Heck no. Why mess with their perfection. Being vinegar based, a couple of jars lasts the summer so I stock up. What I'm trying to say to the tourists is, this place has bus and RV parking. long lines of pick nick tables under shelters for that rainy day. I say, if you like NC style BBQ or an adventurous eater, give this place a try. Don't let the long lines stop you from trying this place out. You guys can have it for about 3 1/2 months out of the year, the locals have it the rest of the time, so enjoy it. Most excellent pork BBQ in the Carolina style. If you are going anywhere near the Outer banks this tasty pit BBQ place is worth a stop. While the Pork sandwich is the real draw (deservedly so) I am a sucker for ribs, and Currituck didn't disappoint. Get a combo to try them both. Pass on the Brisket, this place is pork, pork pork . And bread pudding. sweet, carmel and less than $2. Of the side the sweet potato casserole was outstanding, but nothing special for the hushpuppies or green beans. I would have been better off with cole slaw. I plan to go again and try the baked beans and hot fudge sundae. Or whatever else smells delicious that day. read more

Not bad but definitely not what I was expecting, ribs were good, chicken was good, brisket was just ok ( didn't expect it to be shredded) the sides were mediocre, the sauces where actually terrible, you might want to stop buying that bulk cheap semi bbq sauce crap, yuck, (there are better options from your food purveyors) sweet potato had burnt (not brown but black ) coconut on top, looked like it's been reheated multiple times and had a very strong anise flavor which was not enjoyable. Fried okra was ok. Mac and cheese not worth wasting the stomach space, not enough cheese in the béchamel and it was just plain and pastie. Pickled beets not good. By far the best bbq I've had in NC and if you get the chance the brisket is literally to die for. Paul and his staff were friendly, professional and helped us pull off a rehearsal dinner 2 hours after checking into our rental home. And our guests are still talking about the food. We have just used Curritck BBQ for a rehearsal dinner for our sons wedding in Corolla OBX. I cannot thank Leslie and her staff enough. Leslie was superb to work with, starting from our initial contact. We were sampled their food ( not everyone offered us this option) and Leslie was very patient with us, answering all our questions. On the evening, the staff worked efficiently and were very pleasant. Our guests were very impressed with the food and how it was displayed and served. We received many many compliments. The food that was most enjoyed was the sweet potato biscuits, the twice baked potato casserole and the beef brisket. All the food was delicious. We would be very happy to recommend Currituck BBQ. Stopped here on the way down to the Outer Banks as it's right off the main highway. Lots of outdoor picnic table seating and about 6 tables inside. BF had the "jumbo" beef brisket sandwich which he enjoyed. I'm not a fan of BBQ but had their pistachio nuts & sweet tea which were superb - but not very environmentally friendly with their huge Styrofoam cups :( I liked that they let you put a pin in a map where you were from - NYC represent!! read more

Outstanding barbeque! We stopped there for lunch along a drive from the Outer Banks back up to Washington, DC. They had a variety of wonderful sauces set out on the tables, making it easy to sample different ones. The yellow South Carolina sauce, mustardy and tangy, was so great I bought some in a bottle to take home. read more

Boyfriend had the pulled pork & brisket, which were good but not great. I ordered the riblets platter & for $7 I wasn't expecting much. I could only eat half my food, & this was after 5 hours on the road. Top-notch Carolina barbecue--everything on the menu is great. Split some brisket, ribs, and pulled pork with friends and it's tough to decide, but I think the ribs were the best thing there. The coleslaw was pretty damn good, too. I'm not much for the multitude of barbecue sauces gimmick, but this place does it right--they've got standard vinegary NC sauce, a mustardy Carolina sauce, a homemade concoction that has a number of unique flavors (dill? pickling spice? not sure), a couple of tomatoey & sweet sauces, and some straight-up firey stuff. read more

Giving you the disclaimer that I'm a Bostonian, my ancestors Greek immigrants, and what our people are known for is cooking meat way past well and into done - where it can be used as a weapon. It should be noted that my BBQ experience has been limited to a handful of BBQ joints in the metro Boston area, very nice, but very northern locations. My father was a restaurant owner in Quincy and for years prepared rack of pork ribs which I've always used as a baseline. As the rating says, Yay! I'm a fan, and that's saying a lot - if you consider me any kind of expert. We heard from Northern transplants to Elizabeth City about one of the areas best - if not only - BBQ joints. The prices are very reasonable. My girlfriend ordered the three combo platter which is a lot of food for under $14 and I the half slab of ribs for about $17. The combo platter was cooked to perfection, in that the meat wasn't over seasoned - so you can apply their three (possibly four) different choices of BBQ sauce to the meat. (I should say that we went there in early June and I didn't take notes, so the exact specifics are exactly lacking). I do remember that the ribs were cooked to perfection with just the right amount of rub. They were juicy and fell right off the bone. The coleslaw was delicious. The sweet potato casserole was outstanding to the point there are no words adequate for it! You have to try it and swing back here and let me know how you would describe it. They were out of Peach Cobbler, so we settled for a slice of FRESH blueberry pie topped with ice cream, which topped off our food coma for the drive back into the Elizabeth City micropolitan area. It surprising that there aren't more places like this throughout the Carolinas. The prices were reasonable for us city folks, I think you could eat a meal with a soft drink or tea for under $10. We later ate with some family at some all-I-could-eat BBQ place later on, for a little more, but the quality simply didn't compare. The service and the shop is no frills - standard. It's basic pizza house seating. I believe they have outdoor seating as well. I got the impression the employees and management are resting on their laurels that they are the only decent BBQ for 30 miles in either direction. They would have scored better from me had they simply provided more information as to the types of beef, how they are prepared and what sets them apart. In talking with locals from Elizabeth City, they didn't really know about this place and I think that in order for food joint to be truly great, they need to really understand their customer beyond those who are driving to & from the Northern Banks and be more a place that locals would drive an hour to. Having said this, anyone used to dining in any metropolitan area is that as always people are definitely more friendly here than what you'll find elsewhere. I'll end where I began. I'm looking forward to returning to the area to sample some of the other BBQ restaurants in the area, to see how this shop truly compares with its competition. Still, it's worth checking out for a no-frills meal of local freshness. read more

This is good stop on the way to the Outer Banks for anyone looking to experience NC barbecue as it's convenient and quick as a road stop as you enter/leave the state. The pork itself was good but not the best I've ever had; it wasn't quite as smokey tasting as one might hope. Interestingly the 1/4 dark meat rotisserie chicken my wife ordered was one of the best non-Peruvian rotisserie chickens I ever had and was very smokey tasting. Were I to return to Currituck BBQ I might get that over the pork. The sides are a bit hit or miss with the mac and cheese and sweet potato casserole being standouts while I personally found the fried okra a bit lack luster. read more

First I want to say, I love this place, everyone is always friendly and the food has always been amazing. We go here probably 2x a month and have never been disappointed until now. Went to dinner there last night and I have to say, if this had been my first time I would not go back. The restaurant was dirty! Floors were sticky, used napkins were on the floor from previous diners. Tables were not clean, floors looked like they haven't been cleaned in a month. We were so disappointed that a local restaurant was in such bad shape. What made matters worse, it was the worst meal we have ever had there. The pulled brisket, which is normally amazing, was mush. The mac & cheese was cold and my husband received the wrong meal. I hope that this was just a bad day!! read more

I picked up a barbecue meal on my way out of the Outer Banks. The onion rings were perfect, and the hush puppies were excellent. The pulled pork sandwich was very good, especially with Larry's original barbecue sauce. I like that they had two sizes of sandwiches to choose from. We come down to outerbank for 2 days vacation,after 2 days of "seafood brainwash",we kind of like want to find something local and fresh farm food.the restaurant is the way that we go home to the north,it's a nice small restaurant near gas station,they have a pig sign next to the road,it's easy to find. My boyfriend and I arrived ready to enjoy a good meal at Currituck BBQ. The place was crowed which was a good sign. I ordered a brisket sandwich with applesauce and baked beans and a side of peach cobbler. My boyfriend order half rack of ribs, French fries and the mac & cheese. We were told that it would be a 20-25 min wait for the ribs because they were so busy and that was not a problem. Long story short, we waited about 40-45 mins and watched others who ordered after us get their order of ribs. I wanted my money back and the cashier agreed to refunded the money. The cashier was not pleased with the mix up and insisted they provide us with our order to go. End of story.....NOT......when I got home the brisket sandwich looked like pulled pork, the order was still missing the French fries and mac & cheese and the cobbler was FROZEN, yeah I said Frozen. I find it difficult to judge the quality of food, because food is always better when served on the premise and hot, therefore I give it a 2 star. read more
