After reading the overall positive reviews of Curry Do, I decided to try it out for myself. I was quickly seated and had my order taken just as quickly. I ended up ordering the curry udon with beef belly and with the potatoes and carrots add on. My dinner came to me in less than 5 minutes. Through out my meal, the waitress came by multiple times to check on me. While the service was appreciated, I did think it was overkill for a more casual style sit down restaurant. Curry Udon 1.5/5: Sadly, I did not enjoy the curry, despite the hype. Let's start with the positives. The beef belly was great and didn't have too much fat. There was also plenty of beef belly, and I was pretty satisfied by the amount with the regular size. Now to the negatives. Firstly, the udon noodles were overly soft and have lost their chewy texture. They were as soggy as my mood having to eat them. Secondly, the curry soup was rather underwhelming bland. I understand that the curry sauce is mixed with dashi broth, but I didn't taste much of the savoryness of the dashi. The curry flavors were present in the soup, but tasted unremarkable. Thirdly, the potatoes and carrots add-on were bland. The root veggies looked and tasted like they were boiled in a separate pot instead of with the curry. The veggies were also on the firmer side, a clear indicator they were not cooked with the curry. Finally, I have to bring up the price. For a base price of $17.50 for the regular size, I am expecting a quality better than store bought curry roux. I remember it being quite packed when it first opened, but the crowds seemed to have died down after a few months, so you don't have to wait too long for a tasty plate of curry! The menu is pretty straightforward, you pretty much have two decisions to make. One, you pick your base (either rice or udon). Second, you pick your protein (pork belly, beef belly, shrimp tempura, or chicken katsu). Other than that, there are a few optional add-ons you can add to your plate (like a fried egg or cheese), and if you think you'll still be hungry with just the curry, there are a few appetizers you can get with your order as well (like a house salad or curry fries). I usually get the chicken katsu over rice curry. The panko breading is quite crispy, and the chicken is nice and tender inside. But of course the star of the show is the curry, and thankfully they give you a heaping portion of it. There's enough to dip your protein and all your rice in, and you'll still probably have a little left over (to dip with whatever else you may have at your table). Came here recently with my family while we were in Tustin. We are big fans of coco ichi and this place seemed to have good reviews so we decided to give it a shot. My husband had pork katsu, and my daughter and I both had chicken katsu. The curry was delicious however their mild was more of a "medium" in my opinion. It had some heat for me and for my daughter it was too spicy for her to enjoy her katsu. The mild at Coco Ichi I has no spice at all. The curry does not have any vegetable or potato bits in it. The chicken katsu was thin cut white breast meat, no thigh meat. Comes adorned with green onions, fried crispy bits and red radish. If you want more radish or pepper, just ask for it, it's complimentary. I liked the thinly cut katsu and I really, really liked their curry sauce. I would give the sauce five stars. The coolest add-on you can get is probably the fried egg, which I haven't seen at other Japanese curry restaurants. Outside of that, the add-on options left me wanting. It would be nice if there was the option to add veggies, tofu, potatoes or hot dog slices. They have curry fries on the menu which is slathered with curry sauce, but a plain side of fries on the menu (which I sometimes like to mix into my curry plate) would have been awesome. Service here was quick. My curry dish came out about five minutes after I ordered it. The restaurant was about half full on a late Friday evening and can seat about 30-35 people, half of which are bar counter type seats along the wall. I love, love, love Japanese curry, and hadn't found any places that quite lived up to what I grew up with, until I found Curry DO. I've enjoyed every item I've ordered so far, but I would definitely recommend the beef belly curry rice, gyoza, and matcha latte with honey cream. Additionally, the service at Curry DO is excellent.
