I would expect to wait AT LEAST 20 minutes when you visit, even longer on the weekends. However, it is well worth the wait. Food: The food is delicious! Their curry is probably one of the best in the Bay Area. When you eat at the restaurant, they have different types of spice powders at all the tables that you can add to change the spicy levels to your curry. My favorite curry place in the bay area!! This place also has a location in burlingame that I would recommend more than the cupertino one - the cupertino one has a really long wait all of the time. We waited a little over 1 hr for a table for 4, but there are a lot of things in this complex to do to pass the time. I always get the korroke curry with a dome egg ($4.5 - this is not listed on their menu as an add on but you can ask for it , I always do). I love the spices they have on the table; I eat spicy food and I love the orange habanero. I also like how this place serves cabbage, pickles and potato salad for no extra charge w the curry, I think the potato salad really compliments the curry. One note for to go, they don't offer the spices to go which really changes the flavor - just something to keep in mind. I also don't think the korroke is that good if it isn't fresh. Upon arriving at Curry Hyuga, staff were really welcoming and helpful. Wait time for 2 people was last than 5 minutes around 12:15pm on a Friday. In general, it seem like a steady flow which was great since the restaurant itself isn't that big. They have a take out kiosk at the front and a waitlist kiosk by the door. I also have to add that the smell of the curry in the atmosphere was great. I tried the blood orange lemonade and it didn't look like blood orange and tasted interesting. We put down our name at roughly around 6:25pm, yes i know it's peak dinner time, but we didn't get seated until 7:15pm. After about 25mins of being on the waitlist we checked where we were on the list and it had said that we were next, but we checked again 10mins after and we were bumped down to 3rd in line. There were a party of 4 waiting a whole hour to be seated before us. They don't provide you with an estimated time on the kiosk for some reason, but you can ask the staff for an estimate. The spot itself was fairly small, which makes sense for the area, but just be prepared to sit fairly close to your neighbors. The service itself was good and they were very fast with serving the food, we only waited about 5mins for our food to come out. The curry itself was fairly different than other curry places I've tried. It's a much darker/flavorful curry than other places, but yet it was light if that makes sense (it didn't feel as thick as some places). Hubby and I decided to order take out from the car. This was the first time we ever did take out. I always get the Chicken Katsu Curry. It's my favorite dish here. I would say it's equivalent to some of the other places in town but their spices really make a difference, which is why I always come here instead. I love the Habanero spice since it adds the perfect kick of spicy to make my food much more enjoyable. So I requested some some Habanero spice on the side along with my Togo order, but to my surprise, when we came to pick up the food, the worker told us that they couldn't give us any spices Togo. Apparently, it's their restaurant policy to not allow spices Togo to encourage people to dine in. Like really?? Imagine going to a place and ordering a hot dog, hamburger or French fries, and the restaurant refuses to give you sauces like ketchup because you wanted to take it Togo... Of course I completely understand why they prefer people to dine in, but at the same time, don't you want your customer to enjoy their food to the fullest regardless if it's dine in or not? After all, we still are supporting your restaurant. We just don't want to wait two hours because it's not like there wasn't a long wait. It's mind blowing to me. Like do these Togo orders not add to their stream of revenue? Would they rather people go somewhere else than to do take out if they rather not wait one-two hours? Hmmm. So I actually didn't enjoy my food this time unfortunately. Without the spices, the food was pretty mediocre and comparable to other places in town. Overall, I did enjoy the food here, but these shortcomings are disappointing. I hope they can address these issues for future guests. Everything I've tried on the menu has been delicious, so you can't go wrong with most of the items. The katsu is crispy and juicy, and the portions are filling. The yuzu lemonade is a refreshing mix of sweet and tart. Each table has a spice rack with 5 different spices you can try, but I always use the togarashi for a mild kick. There's also a call button on each table to signal a waiter over. Final Thoughts: 4.06/5 My friends and I have come here at least 4 times now and I'm pretty neutral about this place. Curry houses aren't too common around here and I currently don't have a second place in mind for me to compare. It's a seemingly simple dish, but there are a lot of components to it and they do it well here in terms of flavoring. 6 spice powders are provided at each table, so you can customize according to your tolerance. My preferences are for the Orange Habanero and African Birds Eye. Much needed spice and heat to elevate the dishes in my opinion. Food: 1. Signature Katsu Curry (Chicken Cutlet): 4.3/5 Always my go-to dish here. Crispy chicken katsu on a bed of rice with rich and thick curry on the side. Shredded cabbage, potato salad, and fukujinzuke as a side garnish. This dish is very hearty and always satisfies my stomach. The curry is nice and thick and has a lot of flavor to it. Balance in flavors has been optimal and consistent - Umami, salty, and sweet. The chicken katsu is juicy and has a nice thick coating. They drizzle what looks like teriyaki sauce on the cutlet and it adds some more flavor to it. My only note is regarding the potato salad. This is a personal preference, as I'm sure others like this addition. It adds another flavor component that neither adds nor subtracts from this dish. Not a huge concern, but I would actually just prefer the shredded cabbage on the side here. 2. Katsu Curry Udon (Chicken Katsu) My friend chose this dish today and I had a bite from it. The broth itself is rich and thick with lots of flavors going on here. Very luscious. Seems to be expected as they state that the dish is infused with "wafu" dash broth. I know this as a powder seasoning and the flavors are more commonly used in Japanese dishes and broths. It gives the dish another layer of flavoring that's very rich, deep, and umami from the kombu and bonito. The udon is slightly under al dente, so the noodle is more firm and has a nice bite to it. Lovely texture component from the fried tempura pieces, cabbage, and green onions. The ajitama soft boiled eggs never seem to do us wrong either. 3. Classic Katsu Don (Chicken Katsu) Again, friends dish, so my input is limited. Three items are provided with this item - Main entrée, sunomono, and miso soup. The main entrée that is comprised of chicken katsu with a layer of egg and sauce over a bed of rice. The breading from the chicken katsu softens and loses some of the crisp, but it's to be expected with this dish. If consumed timely, there shouldn't be much of a concern. They garnish it with shredded seaweed for some more crunch and yellow pickled radish. Lots of layers and components to this, which I'm sure adds to the umami flavor. Sunomono is a Japanese cucumber salad - Looks refreshing to have with the remainder of the dish. Miso soup to finish the dish. Very hearty tray overall. - Aesthetics: All three dishes were presented beautifully. There are nice colors, texture, and garnishes provided in all plates, which I really appreciate. Very nicely executed. --------- Quality: Fair Our food took about 3 to 5 minutes to come out to the table. Seems like an inadequate amount of time to cook poultry to optimal internal temperature, plate it up, garnish, and then serve. My food came out just warm like the food had been sitting in a food warmer. This isn't usually a concern actually. During my previous visits, the katsu was piping hot and that is now my standard for this place. Price: Fair For what is provided, I believe the prices are fair. Average amount paid was about $20 and that's common here in the Bay Area. Serving size is optimal - Nice serving of rice/udon and fairly large cutlet provided with a nice hefty ladle of curry/sauce. Service: Optimal Customers are always greeted when entering the restaurant - It's nice gesture that I typically notice for Japanese restaurants. Call button is on the table, so we just press it and they come to us. They're pretty quick to catch us for all our needs though. Location/Parking: Fair Very small space for this restaurant. The wait time is going to depend on when you come. Their number of tables is very limited. I would probably suggest avoiding the rush if you can help it. A waitlist is available, so I would recommend you using that to your advantage, as well. This plaza has multiple food places and stores, so there's a fair amount of traffic here. With that said, parking is "fair", but definitely borderline suboptimal. Visited with a friend and was glad I finally got to try this hyped up spot! The wait was fairly short on a weekday night, although not completely gone (maybe 10-15 mins). I've tried to dine here multiple times before but it's always been impossible to wait for a spot, so it was super exciting that it finally worked out! I got the pork katsu curry, and it was warm, homey, and everything Japanese curry should be. I'm glad there was a veggie component in the shredded cabbage, but I almost thought the completely bare nature of it was too stark to the naturally saltier Japanese curry. Even so, the curry was extremely flavorful, but definitely overpowered the rice and vegetables which maybe just wasn't my personal preference. So I've heard rave reviews of this place and there's little in the world that brings me more joy than comfort food. Curry rice with pork is definitely a comfort food for me. I will say that I've tried Curry Hyuga in both their Burlingame location as well as Cupertino's. Note: the parking lot for this Cupertino location is extremely crowded. There are lots of aggressive drivers vying for a spot at all times so definitely be careful not to hit any cars or pedestrians when you're pulling in or backing out. The plaza has a lot of hot spots, including a matcha tea place, a new Sanrio store, a Daiso, and more. This Cupertino location is also a lot smaller than the one in Burlingame. Definitely not good for big groups though there's the option to do takeout. If you do dine in, prepare to wait. I waited a little over an hour - they do send texts once you've joined the Waitlist so you can always step away and come back once a table is ready. Some people on the list had been waiting 2 hours and more. If you don't want to wait, I suggest going to the Burlingame location. The curry here was great! I got the standard set of pork cutlet, which comes with curry, rice, and potato salad. Would have been nice to pair with a soup, which you can order on the side. As soon as I was seated my order was taken and my dish came out some 5 minutes after that - everything was super efficient! The curry reminded me of when I would eat this while living abroad and feeling homesick. It was the perfect balance of curry and rice, the flavors were good too. Curry Hyuga was a solid place for Japanese style curry dishes. There was a good amount of options for a very reasonable price in this area. I ordered takeout, and was pleasantly surprised how neatly it was packed. The tonkatsu for the curry was packed separately from the curry. You can adjust spiciness of the curry, and it was just right for me at level 1. There was a decent amount of katsu and the flavor was good, not too dry and was tender. I also got the hayashi omurice, which won out to me. The omurice was nice and fluffy and the hayashi had an excellent flavor. It was very crowded when I went to pick up, and they didn't have a designated area for takeout orders, so I had to wait for someone to see I wasn't trying to order on the kiosk before I was helped. We came on Friday evening around 5:30 and we waited about 10 minutes. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Food came out very quick! Katsu Curry (Pork) 4/5 i loved the meat, it was very juicy. big portion, i couldn't even finish it. Their curry is on the heavier side, i'm use to the lighter curry but everything was great. Korroke : 2/5 I saw a lot of people rave about it but when I got it, there wasn't much to it. I didn't like that it didn't have any vegetables in it. usually croquettes have some corn, pea, and carrot bits. It might just be a different style from what i'm used to but it was to starchy to pair with the curry. Chicken Karaage: 5/5 i loved the crispiness and the egg salad sauce. one of my favorites. Finally got to try out Curry Hyuga for a friend's birthday! Crispy, savory, and spicy if you add the African Bird's Eye chili aka Peri Peri spice. Lunch service was quick and we were seated right away at 12pm on a Friday. The place isn't too big so I'd recommend it for parties of 4 or less, but there is seating for 6. Eats: *Teppanji: sizzling chicken with onion infused namban sauce *Corn Potage Soup: while warm, reminded me of Nhā's Corn Cloud drink *Signature Katsu Curry, tonkatsu pork version but you can get chicken *Kakuni Curry: ginger soy braised pork & boiled egg *Classic Teishoku Rice Plate with Chicken Katsu, also comes with spaghetti, tori-jiru chicken miso soup, sunomono cucumber salad Signature curry was slightly tangy, but I suppose that's how Japanese curry is supposed to taste like? I preferred the chicken katsu over the tonkatsu-- both were good! Teppanji sizzled and was the perfect starter. I heard so many good things about the corn potage and it's sweeter than most soups I've ever tried. Adding croutons was the right choice for texture. Excellent service here!
