Absolutely horrible service. Our waitress seemed annoyed to take our order and had a terrible attitude. When asked if dishes were spicy/made spicy she replied in a condescending tone and said it's not possible (which was surprising, especially at a Thai restaurant). I met up with my friend who's vegetarian and she was pleased to find a grouping of items on Rice & Shine's menu that she liked including their fresh rolls ($14.80) and Pad Kee Mao ($18.80). They thoughtfully removed the fish sauce from her dishes. I had an excellent Thai iced tea and picked at a too-sweet Pad Thai. It was sticky and the ingredients lost in the tamarind sauce. I've had it prepared this way at other Thai spots; it's not my preference. Service was kind, not intrusive. My friend and I were deep in discussion so she checked on us then left us to talk which was perceptive. I'd go back to try more of their menu including a curry dish and Tom Kha soup. Try not to sit at the tables in the path of the door: A gust of cold wind blows in and the door's automatic- Arctic chill! I hope they adjust that. I came here for lunch with a friend, craving thai food but was a little disappointed by what we ordered. There has been a recent trend of Asian and particularly Thai-style brunch spots in SF so I was excited to try the food here. I got the Thai boiled rice soup with shrimp while my friend opted for the braised pork leg rice. The boiled rice shrimp soup was from their Asian brunch menu but ended up being pretty lackluster. The shrimp was good but it was really just 6 pieces of shrimp, white rice and a bland broth without any veggies other than herbs. I had really hoped this would pack a punch of flavor. The braised pork leg rice was better but a bit dry and it reminded me of Taiwanese pork rice but without the nice sauciness of the classic dish. Service was very friendly and we were asked multiple times if everything was good. Perhaps we should have ordered other dishes but for the price, the food we got really wasn't worth it. read more

My sister had me make a Yelp reservation yesterday for today at 12:30 PM for a party of 6. This morning she told me one person couldn't make it. I wasn't able to edit the reservation to reflect the change in number. We arrived at the restaurant at 12:17 PM and let our hostess know that we were now a party of 5. She was OK with that and asked us to give her time to set up the table to accommodate a member of our party who was in a wheelchair. There is a push button to operate the door should you require it. Our hostess brought us water with no ice I think because the members of our party were older which is what I would have asked for. I was ready with my order of Braised Pork Leg Rice and BKK Street Noodles with egg noodles in soup because I read fellow Yelpers reviews before choosing a restaurant and then the food. It was our 1st time patronizing the restaurant and my sister asked for the specialties of the house/recommendations with the qualifications that she did not eat spicy nor duck. The recommendation of Chicken Rice was a good one. My sister liked the tender chicken and the ginger rice. Brother-in-law asked about the juice available. The orange juice is not fresh squeezed. He decided to go instead with the iced Thai coffee and ordered Eggs Benedict. Dad wanted Mango Fried Rice with chicken and sister ordered another dish of Pad See Ew with pork. My sister forgot to order takeout and did so later in the meal. The kitchen was busy, but we did not mind waiting 15 minutes for Pad Thai and Pad See Ew. Presentation of food was good. Food had good flavor and was ample. Braised pork was tender as expected. BKK Street Noodles were a little spicy. Water glasses were refilled without being asked. Hostess checked a couple of times on everything going well. It's a calm environment to have a meal with nice music. Been meaning to try this place and finally had my opportunity for takeout last week. Went with the chicken satay sandwich that was pretty tasty but also a bit basic. I was expecting it to come with fries (what is said on the menu) and it came with salad. There was also a weird dark spot on my bun which looked like mold or something... The chicken was tender, but it looked very pale and unappetizing. I ordered the dry version, but there was soup pooled at the bottom that wasn't mixed into the noodles at all, making the dish feel sloppy and unsatisfying overall. The AM plate was even worse. Very plain potatoes, canned beans, two eggs, a pork sausage, and a single piece of toast with jam. It honestly felt like airplane food. The only thing I enjoyed was the pork sausage, which was tasty enough that I ordered an extra one. Unfortunately, the second sausage arrived uncooked in the middle, and I had to ask for it to be redone. What really sealed the experience was the service. The waitress showed no apology or empathy and gave off the impression that she didn't want to be there and that my requests were a bother. My friends & I from the grade school of our children met up for lunch at Rice & Shine. I made a reservation for 12:30 pm. When I checked in, I saw our table with the reserved sign. It was my first time dining here but my friends ate at this restaurant prior. We just ordered water and for me hot water with lime. We told the server,Koy, that we were eating family style. We ordered Chicken Sa-te, Yellow Curry with chicken and steam rice, and Pad Seiw. When they were served, you can smell the aroma of Chinese and Indian influences. The food was flavorful. For dessert, we had the Kaya Toast and Fried Banana with Ice Cream. The Kaya Toast tasted so delicious with coconut & pandan flavor. The server was nice. Ordered a take out order of Pad Kee Mao with pork and their chicken wings which is one of their appetizers. Noodles were very salty, greasy and the pork were strips of pork and not ground pork which I am accustomed to at other Thai restaurants. Chicken was not really spicy although the menu stated it would be. I preferred the chicken over the noodles. The cashier/server could have exuded better hospitality standards when I asked her some questions about the owners were the same ones as Khan Toke located a block away and why they retired and if they were the same ones who opened Rice and Shine. 3 stars overall for the food and interaction with the server. Rice & Shine is a great new addition to the brunch scene in Inner Richmond. This restaurant offers both brunch items with an Asian twist as well as traditional Thai dishes. The interior is huge and suitable for large parties. Service is great, staff are welcoming and accommodating. My friend made a reservation for our large party to be safe. As it is still a new restaurant, it was quiet that day and we could have easily walked in without a reservation. We all enjoyed our meal - chicken and waffles, breakfast fried rice, and braised beef noodles. I had the braised chicken noodle with flat rice noodles (dry with soup on side) which was hearty and delicious. The chicken was so tender it fell off the bone. I ordered takeout from here for a late lunch one day and didn't realize it was the same owners as Khan Toke which had closed. I had eaten there once and thought the food was just ok. I think the food here is also ok. It's not the best Thai food in the neighborhood, but it's good. The price for the chicken wings seemed a little high because it didn't come with as many as I've gotten from other Thai places. The wings were tasty and crunchy though. The pad see ew was also good, but I just prefer a couple other spots nearby more. I think I got pork and there wasn't a ton of meat. The food tastes fine, I just think that for the price, the portion sizes are a little small. The decor is very clean and fresh looking, although the chairs and benches don't have padding, so they might not be the most comfortable to sit on if you have a long meal there. Hey munchkins how's it going? This sunny morning I did a beautiful run from Pac heights to Richmond with "La Tacqueria Royalty" and "The Dentist". Originally I gave "La Tacqueria Royalty" a challenge to do the 3.46 mile run while carrying Franklin the air purifier. Unfortunately he decided not to do it so I carried Franklin myself which was still good because I need the practice for my goal of carrying him on a half marathon. When we got there the waitress was very friendly and attentive. They even gave Franklin his own seat which he definitely appreciated! The chicken and waffles are pretty good. The savory goodness was definitely needed after a long run like that. The breakfast fried rice came with good variety. The sauces and ham are good. The fried rice itself is savory. We decided to try something new and gave R&S a shot, but I'm not sure it was the best idea this time around. It seems like they may be experiencing some "new restaurant" growing pains. The wait for our food was longer than expected -- my meal arrived about 25 minutes after ordering, and my date's dish didn't come out until about 30 minutes after that. I wanted to share a few observations that I hope are helpful as you continue building the business: 1. Price and Quantity While the flavors are definitely there, it can be challenging to justify high prices in the Outer Richmond neighborhood. You're competing with long-standing, old-school neighborhood spots that offer larger portions at lower price points. Making sure the value is aligned with the setting and local expectations could really help. 2. Pacing Getting guests seated on time is important, but getting food to the table promptly is even more critical. A full dining room where no one has food can create the impression that the kitchen is overwhelmed. Even small improvements in ticket timing or staggering seating could make a big difference in dining experience. 3. Reservations Encouraging reservations is understandable, but very early on it may create friction. A waitlist system can feel more welcoming and gives you flexibility to manage the natural ebb and flow of walk-ins while you're still building consistent demand. Asking for reservations while standing in the middle of an empty restaurant looks a little disingenuous. 4. Front Door The Inner Richmond tends to be cold most of the year, so having a properly functioning front door is important. Right now, the auto-close door appears to pause too long before shutting, which lets in a blast of cold air each time it opens which is especially uncomfortable for guests seated nearby. Adjusting the closing speed or adding clear instructions could improve comfort immediately. I'm sharing this because I see the potential here and would love to see the place thrive. That said, I understand that new spots often need time to work out the kinks. I'm willing to give Rice & Shine a few more months and try again, in the hopes that the timing and overall experience will improve. BB read more

Came here for lunch on a Saturday. I did have trouble choosing something initially because I'm definitely a visual person and would've loved to see pictures on the menu. I was referencing Yelp photos when the server asked if I had any questions and said the photos online may not be accurate. So I just asked which dishes were the most popular and ended up picking the BKK Street Noodle dish. She also made a suggestion on the type of noodle depending on if I wanted the noodles wet or dry, which was helpful. The noodles tasted great and had a satisfying amount of protein in it too so it didn't leave me feeling sluggish in a carb coma. The interior is cute and well decorated. The folks who've been running Khan Toke a few blocks away for years (which was the first Thai restaurant in SF btw) have moved out of there and just opened Rice & Shine. Geary can be tricky to park at around here but there is a parking lot a block away. The theme is classic Thai appetizers and rice, noodle, curry dishes most will recognize. Then there's a breakfast menu that's a mix of American / Thai options. The decor is simple but hip. Across a couple of visits I've tried the following dishes all of which have been stellar. The service is friendly and prompt. 1. Nam Prik Ong.. it's a Northern Thai item that's not commonly found. I think it's best consumed as a shared appetizer. You basically dip steamed veggies in ground pork that comes in a tomato/onion sauce. 5/5 for authenticity, taste and the perfectly steamed veggies. 2. Kua Kling... think of the classic minced pork with holy basil except in this dish the minced pork comes in a spicy, Southern Thai paste. I love this dish and I've only seen it at one other place in SF. 5/5 for offering this unique dish and for the excellent preparation: 3. I came here for the pad thai. This was a vacant store for years and finally someone moved in. Transformed it into a pretty place. The only annoying thing. We sat by the door. Each time door opens it doesn't close. It's an automatic door thing. I got up 5 times to close the door because of the cold draft. The waitress said she has to do that and was willing to do that. Thai people are the nicest people. She was the only one working. Later a group of six came in and the guy closed it. Pad thai with chicken was good. I asked for more peanuts. Good portion and flavor. Meing Com. Don't order that. Butter lettuce leaves and you wrap cubes of ginger, green bell pepper, dried coconut/ peanuts, dried shrimp, chopped onions, and splash of lime. I enjoyed it and the lemongrass sauce was really amazing. We had to take the leftover sauce home. The papaya salad with grilled chicken with sticky rice. The salad had a kick of spicyness. Next time order just the grilled chicken. Service was great. Other tables ordered the BKK noodle soup. Another table ordered waffles. The food is good but it's pretty expensive for what you get. I got the King and I favorite, pad cha seafood, coconut rice, and sticky rice. The king and I have 4 skewers with tiny pork pieces. The pad cha seafood had 2 small mussels, 4 small fish filet, 2 to 3 really really thin slices of calamari, 2 shrimp, and maybe 8 pieces of bell pepper. Very small portion for over $20. It did not come with rice. The coconut rice is over $5 but is a small rice container. The sticky rice is almost $5 or maybe $6 but maybe the size of a palm. Again the food in my opinion is good but I just wish the portions matched the price. I would probably buy again if I was craving (pad cha seafood is one of my fav dishes) but it would have to be a treat. read more

Rice & Shine's Papaya Salad is a perfectly solid offering, but it doesn't do much to stand out from the crowded field of Papaya Salads that populate most Thai (and many Vietnamese) menus. Perhaps its main notable feature is its presentation in a deep vessel that allows for the dressing to pool at its base and give the last few bites of papaya an extra heavy dousing of sauce, a seriously delicious end to the meal. However, the volume of the salad itself leaves something to be desired, not quite enough to share as an appetizer or to be a single person's main. Nonetheless, the look of the dish is very pleasing and does provide a greater flavor meld than the typical plated version. I also give them bonus points for offering a fully vegetarian version of the salad, clarifying that fish sauce is not used when that dietary preference is specified (the menu itself is clear and our server made me feel confident that I wouldn't be having any animal products).
