I first had this at a food truck as Off The Grid a couple of years ago. Now this is one of it's brick and mortar locations and they have a much wider selection. The restaurant is pretty spacey and has a pretty modern lounge/coffee shop atmosphere. There is a huge menu over the register, but there are also plenty of menus to look over while you're in line. I personally had the Meat Sweats Thali Platter. There is a lot of food on this dish alone. 3 different meat/sauces, couple of fluffy naan slices, rice, and a big crispy chip that can be broken up for the pico. Some meats I liked more than the others, but it depends on your taste. They were all good, but I definitely liked the chicken ones better. The chip had the texture of those Taco Bell cinnamon twists. The rice was rice. We also got an order of Chicken Tika Sexy Fries and Chicken Tika Naughty Naan. These are huge, so maybe just order one, depending on your group. Smothered and covered sweet potato waffle fries with Chicken Tika. A big fluffy Naan bread smothered in similar stuff. All delicious. I guess there was also a salad that came with the Naughty Naan, but we were all too stuffed already. Whether you're new to the cuisine or, a seasoned vet, there's something for everyone here. I stopped in with some work colleagues and got the lamb keema bowl. The portion size was excellent and the food tasted amazing that I was the first one done because I ate it so fast. The decor of the restaurant has a modern vibe appropriate for the area and the staff were very nice. My colleague got the deconstructed samosa bowl, which I got to try and that was really good too. I was looking for keto options for lunch and was getting tired of some of my go tos. I searched Doordash for keto and came upon the Keto bowl and I was pretty impressed! The keto bowl is riced cauliflower, save paneer and butter chicken, along with a delicious salad (that has some citrus and avocado). I actually really like mixing it all together (the hot food and salad) and it's delicious! The portion is also really big and filling and generally good for two meals! This place is kind of like a fast food Indian place but not with the prices. For my Thali I paid almost $18 with tip. My partner paid almost $25 for his chicken tikka burrito and a side of samosas - that included tip. You order, they give you utensils and water masons and then sit down. They come and find you and give you your food. Generally I was not impressed by the food. The beans in the soup were pretty dry and tasteless. The samosas, which seemed the most promising, were really hot and crunchy on the inside but lukewarm/cold on the inside. That caught me off guard for sure. Then the tikka masala itself was too spicy and it wasn't creamy as I'm used to. The chicken and the paneer in each of the tikkas could have used more spice to them. My partner's burrito had a warm and soft tortilla on the outside (but could have been more crispy), whole the inside had too much rice in it and a lot of tikka masala but not much else in it (so don't get it if you get tired of eating the same flavors). Sadly they don't have a variety of naan and their "naan" tasted more like packaged bread than fresh fluffy naan that I'm used to having. It was pretty flavorless and lacking in texture and I think they should have at least garlic naan as well. When I was craving vegetarian food and thinking of the options around downtown Oakland, the first place I thought of was Curry Up Now. They have so many dishes and sides that are flavorful, tasty, and still packed with protein from paneer (they call it Indian Cheese), lentils, beans, etc. My sister and I got two Thali platters for lunch to-go. My American Punjabi Thali platter with butter paneer protein was really good because there was a ton of sauce to go with the rice. I just wish Curry Up Now offered spice level options because I think it would taste even better spicy. My sister got the Karol Bagh Kitty Party Thali platter with paneer tikka masala. The tikka masala was more acidic from the tomatoes while the butter paneer was more savory. Also in the kitty party platter, the saag spinach paneer was a hit with my mom, and she doesn't usually like Indian-style food. I saw her scooping every last bit of saag spinach paneer with the naan and making sure the corners were swiped clean (that's how much she liked it :D). The price of each platter was $15 and it was worth it for the amount of food, which is enough to share between 2 people. I had enough leftovers for a second meal the next day and it still tasted good reheated. Naturally the naan got hard so make sure you eat it while it's fresh! Curry Up Now also has lots of promos, discounts, and offers on their website and I've even gotten coupons in the mail. They have a mobile app and online platform where you can order ahead and choose pickup times. We ordered at the restaurant in-person and the food was made really quickly even for lunch service. I will be coming back for more delicious food and I would recommend it to my friends too! read more

It's is hot as hell and you will get a good sweat out of it. Service: order at register and than they will bring the food to your table. Had a great lunch at Curry Up Now. The decor is trendy and cute and the menu is extensive and fun. The employees were friendly and helpful. I ordered the Punjabi by Nature burrito after seeing photos of it on Yelp. It consists of rice, saag paneer and chicken tikka masala. The burrito is a great size and tasted fantastic! A sweet spot with Indian fusion - creative dishes that have all the delicious flavors of Indian food wrapped up in burritos, quesadillas, tacos and pizzas (with somewhat more traditional-appearing dishes as well). I was able to try many dishes including the pav bhaji, the deconstructed samosas, sexy fries, death by tikka masala (good choice if you want to try a bit of "everything"), biryani, naughty naan, and tikka masala bowl. Everything here is pretty decent/ you can't go wrong ordering. My favorites were the pav bhaji and the deconstructed samosas. The naughty naan is an interesting concept, but I am not a fan and I thought the execution could have been better (pizza was super cheesy, side salad was sloppily put together). Overall, I thought that their tikka masala was super creamy and rich. Yelp check-in also gets you a chai or a ginger mint lemonade. (The lemonade was good and tasted like India - don't mean to be racist here, but just trying to describe the taste). Holy garlic! My mouth still reeks of it a day later. I had the vegetable samosas. They were sooo yummy! As I was eating them I was wondering if those were big chunks of garlic. It was soo steaming hot (felt good on a cold rainy day) that I couldn't tell. Not until an hour later. Yep. Garlic. Maybe they can offer a garlicless version. The taste would still be good. Ate here years ago and was not impressed. Recently tried their food truck at my workplace and it was even worse than my first experience. This time I got the chicken Tikka masala burrito meal which came with a samosa and cookie for $15, also added a mango lassi $4. Burrito should have been called "boring tasting carb overload burrito" because that's exactly what it was. It was big but was basically a tortilla loaded with 75% rice with small bits of other carbs, 25% or less of chicken. Nothing else in it. My taste buds were bored after a few bites. Ended up picking out the chicken and throwing away like 60% of it. Samosa was decent though. The "cookie" was a cheap basic biscuit similar to Biscoff (even that is better). Mango lassi was decent and typical, quite sweet. Brick and motor is ok, but food truck is trash. Food isn't even prepared fresh. Saw rows of pre wrapped burritos. Not sure if it's just this location or if they are going downhill but I've been disappointed recently that everything tastes like sterile fast food. Probably good for people who are afraid of heavy spices. Butter chicken: mediocre, at least the chicken was tender Saag paneer: bland, generous with the paneer though Chana masala: acceptable Daal: acceptable Turmeric basmati rice: dry and hard Kulcha naan: terrible, dry and stale Samosas: ok, filling just tastes like plain potatoes Desi hot sauce: decent heat with unique flavor that doesn't overpower food Gulab jamun: fine, could use a bit more syrup but they're not dry Pro: good packaging. The deconstructed samosa bowl with aloo Gobi used to be a dependable quick lunch favorite for me that I would order through Caviar. They used to always make it with potato somosas. Unfortunately I've had bad experiences the last three times I ordered. I do not eat dairy and I do not eat meat. Late November early December one order included paneer samosas, then another had burnt empty samosas. I took a break then ordered again today. My ordered included mini meat samosas. How I wish I could like this place because I live chaat and their menu sounds amazing. But this place is a sheer disappointment and I have tried it a few times over the past 6 years. Also nothing changes here. Firstly everything is too damn spicy, and it feels unhealthy. I got the chaat with yogurt and requested for no spice yet the samosa chaat was way to spicy for me. After about 40 minutes I asked about my food, and the server said it would be out soon. Shoutout to a Yelp Elite event for allowing me to try this place out after I've seen the food truck at Off the Grid, and for making us come back (woooo, giftcards!) I came here with a group of 4, and it was oddly warmer inside the restaurant than it was outside... the menu is a bit overwhelming, but designed whimsically so you enjoy the print as you're wondering which menu items to choose. After scanning the menu, my partner and I settled on the naughty naan and the "Death by Tikka Masala" Thali, along with a mango lassi. I sorta wish we'd ordered the Vada Pav instead of the Naughty Naan, because the two we'd ordered were super similar... in fact, the only difference really was that the naughty naan was sort of like an Indian pizza (with tikka masala atop naan bread and jalapenos and cheese) and came with a side salad, while the Thali gave us the option to try out both chicken and paneer tikka masalas, with rice, naan, and a papadum, along with chana masala.The mango lassi is pretty thick and very creamy, but definitely a nice ending to the spiciness of the naughty naan (pretty naughty to add those jalapenos, I must say!) Let me start by saying that I love Curry Up Now, which is why I brought my sister there last night for dinner, and also why I was so disappointed in what we got. We both were feeling under the weather and wanted comfort food, so I suggested we eat here. I got the Lamb Kashmiri that I usually get, and she got the Tikka. Part of the reason I suggested CUN is because of the portions, I can usually eat two or three times off the same meal, and because im not feeling well, I didnt want to have to cook. Not this time. It came out so fast that even the cashier (who was very sweet) was surprised, but we received not even half the portion size I normally receive and even though im sick and can barely eat, I ate almost all my food in one sitting. In addition to the portions being halved, there were no pickled veggies in my meal, the sauce was barely covering the rice and there was only two pieces of lamb. I checked in and got a ginger-mint lemonade that, well....lets just say it left a lot to be desired. It tasted like whoever made it had a cold and couldnt taste anything. Im super disappointed because this was her first experience and it made me look bad lol, but also it wasnt what im used to when I go there. I really love Curry Up Now. The food is inventive and delicious, the space is awesome for a fast casual spot, you get a ton for the money and pretty much anyone can eat here no matter what their dietary restriction. It's spicy, but not overwhelmingly so and everything I've tasted has been solidly good to fantastic. I've been a few times and most recently hosted a Yelp Elite Event there and have been impressed all three times. You pick your menu item and customize it to your pleasure: pick your protein, rice or riced cauliflower and wait for some tasty eats! I'll start off with my least favorite and work my way up. I didn't love the burrito bowl. I KNOW! I guess I should have gotten the actual burrito. The bowl was just kind of boring. Womp womp. Still tasty and SO FILLING, but I would opt for something different. The naughty naan is where it's at! Their take on a flatbread style pizza. This was so good and filling. I'd 100% order that again, and again - although a tad bit hard to eat if you're on the go. The thali is a variety of little dishes served on a silver tray and again, I loved, although this isn't the most food. I was surprised that the meat portion wasn't that big for the price, but I did enjoy that you get a little bit of everything with this dish. A big winner are the sliders, called kababpav. These are delicious morsels of meat sandwhiched between slider rolls, served with chips and are delicious. :: Heads up, the last time I ordered these, they forgot the chips, so don't be afraid to ask.:: Service is so friendly, although the first time when they recently had opened, it wasn't the most oiled of machines, however the most recent time was flawless. Service here is a little slow, especially considering it was pretty empty when we went in. I think they do most of their orders via doordash or pickup, so that's their priority. I had the kabob light bowl, which had hummus (not quite indian but good), salad, and a chicken kabob. The salad was really good and had a solid variety of veggies- kale, brussels sprouts, etc. It also came with cauliflower rice, which, by itself, did not have much flavor, but when you mix it up with everything it does a good job. we split a papdi chaat, which was loaded with thick yogurt instead of the traditional thin yogurt. the papdi were slightly thicker and almost sweet, too. Finally, the thali plate with gobi and paneer was great, tons of food- we had enough for an extra meal! A little pricey, coming in at about 50 for two of us, with enough for another meal. read more

I was craving Indian food and decided to satisfy that craving with a couple of friends over lunch. We stopped by around noon (right before the crazy lunch rush) and ordered right away. I got the Meat Sweats Thali (~$16). It comes with Kashmiri Lamb, Ghee Makhni Butter Chicken, and Kadhai Chicken along with a choice of rice and bread. I chose Yellow Basmati Rice and Wheat Kulcha Naan. I also got a Ginger Mint Lemonade which is free with Yelp check-in. All the dishes were delicious! I particularly enjoyed the butter chicken and the lamb. The lamb dish had a slight kick to it. I liked all the distinct flavors in each dish. The yellow rice and whole wheat naan complemented each dish well. There were also side dishes with tomatoes/onions and pickled carrots. Although they had good, complex flavors, it seemed a bit out of place considering they're not "authentic" Indian sides. The Ginger Mint Lemonade was a huge disappointment. I took a few sips and couldn't finish it. It didn't taste like lemonade at all, nor did it taste fresh. It seemed like it was a few days old and none of the flavors really shined through. All in all, I love the layout and ambiance at this Curry Up Now location. The food was well-seasoned, satisfying, and full of flavor. Service & Delivery 1 Star + Food 3 Stars = Average 2 Stars This was my first time trying this chain; unfortunately it will be my last and I will go back to the independents. Delivery was 30mins late, the restaurant had a hard time tracking the order down presumably because they use third parties (in my case they used Uber). I asked to refund my tip to them; they said they couldn't and I should do it online. I've no idea how to even do that. Nobody bothered calling or apologizing. I can only assume they simply don't care Food was OK. Vada Pav was OK, but not exactly at Mumbai standards, and they slightly overdid the gunpowder sprinkle. CTM was different, slightly darker than normal, and less creamy (but hey given it's a British Indian dish there's no one recipe, and some may prefer it). I found it OK apart from one piece of meat was ungodly chewy (overcooked or off?). The Aloo Gobi looked great but had a weird astringent bitter taste. The Chicken Karhai was generally good. Not as tasty as some I've had, but it's the one dish I'd eat again. read more

The concept of this restaurant is super cool in the sense that you get to try Indian food with a twist of western flavors/style. The venue speaks volumes through its bright open space with a mural on the wall and a plethora of framed pictures representing India. I, however, was a bit disappointed when it came down to the taste. I ordered the punjabi bowl, it came with chicken, paneer, and dal over rice. I thought the portions were generous but the taste was bland. I also have tried their fries- I didn't feel like the flavors blended well together. I personally prefer the taste of authentic Indian food served at traditional Indian restaurants where they do not alter the taste. The prices here are also higher than most authentic restuarants. Price to portion ratio is way off. Prices don't justify the serving size. Tried the Makhni Butter burrito at $10 that comes in a flour or wheat tortilla and white/brown rice and inside mild spiced butter masala, rice, chana, onions and chicken. Person who took the order didn't ask which options I wanted for tortilla/rice. Small size at little over 6 inches long and not a lot of chicken inside but more filler was put instead like rice/chana (chickpeas). The taste was ok, wasn't spicy as advertised and not overpowering curry tasting. Was expecting more for the price. Also, had the sexy fries with chicken tikka masala at $10 and that was a huge disappointment. Sweet potato waffle fries were fried well with a nice crunch but there were only about 10 fries! Super skimpy with the fries. Masala tasted fine but there wasn't too much of it either. Nice and modern decor with ample seating and bright menu. I typically hold off from writing negative reviews for restaurants unless they have repeatedly screwed orders or served unsafe food or make it known that customer service means zilch to them. Curry up now did horribly wrong in the first two categories but did try to salvage the situation by doing an acceptable job in customer service. On a hungry day we ended up ordering two vegetarian thalis (The American Punjabi Thali) for delivery. When I (someone who has been a hardcore vegetarian for the last 30 years) dipped into the Butter Panner dish for the second time, I found a piece of chicken (picture attached). We ended up throwing away the thali, having had our 30 years of vegetarian diet ruined. My husband immediately called the restaurant to express our displeasure and was told the manager was away and that they would call us back soon. The cook called us back in the next few minutes and apologized profusely. I had nothing against the cook, as an employee can only make mistakes if there are no good separation controls implemented in the kitchen by the management. The manager called us back the next day and confirmed that they indeed have food separation requirements but blamed the cook for not having followed them. We were also told that a reprimanding action would be taken on the cook and was offered $15 off for my next meal at Curry Up Now, Oakland. We however declined the offer and requested that they retrain their cooks regarding food separation requirements in the kitchen. I would be vary of ordering/eating at this restaurant if I have gluten allergies as it looks like they have a very casual attitude towards food mixing. We have decided to never order from Curry Up Now and have advised our friends and family who are vegetarian/ have gluten allergies to avoid this restaurant at all costs. PS: this was our second experience of having food being mixed. The first time we wrote it off as a one time incident. The second time is what gave us a clear indication of the poor food management attitude in the kitchen. read more
