Customer service is trash. I came here to support a small business prior to the dinner rush (4:20 pm). The three workers never acknowledged me, due to the three of them having to navigate a customer from OnPoint, who dictated the terms of a refund, as she claimed "I work at a bank." Instead of asking her to step to the pick up window (less than 5 feet away) and allowing me to place my order, not a single statement from the three ladies. I left knowing even if my order was fulfilled at any point, I wouldn't have enjoyed the item after having waited 10 minutes before leaving, let alone being acknowledged. I will go to Dairy Queen where I expect the minimum standard of being acknowledged and the opportunity to be indoors. The OR coast struggles to find sufficient employees and I understand some circumstances require the attention and time of one employee, but I don't understand the need for three to address an issue all while simultaneously ignoring the only other customer in line. We actually stumbled across this gem on our way through town. Quaint, local place - Only walk up, outside ordering. No bathroom. We decided just to try a side of fries and a dipped ice cream cone. Friendly staff shared it would be about 10 min wait for our food. It was ready in less, maybe only 5 mins. Sooo good. The fries were crunchy and they done well. Custard King has RE-opened under new ownership. It's run by a local family and has a revised menu. Unfortunately, no milkshakes on the premise, but someone behind the counter said that may change since there has been a demand since they had a soft opening. Burgers, fries, kids menu, and custard ice cream are still on the menu. Now there are a few seafood items that are available. There is only vanilla custard with options of dipped or added toppings. I happily accepted a sample of the frozen custard and it was delicious! My kids were extremely satisfied with their burgers and fresh French fries...I dare you to say that fast 10 tines! I was tempted to order the clam chowder, but settled for the shrimp taco (fried tortilla) and fish taco. The seafood was fresh and cooked to perfection. Next time I will order the cream topping on the side...it was amazing, but I tend to put less on top of my tacos. The restaurant is staffed by family members that are super friendly and helpful. There is now an area you can eat with four picnic tables next to the building. Once your order is ready a staff member brings your order to picnic area (custard ice cream is given at the window ). I was out on a bike ride and decided I was hungry for a burger. It's been at least 20 years since I stopped at the custard King. I Drive by it countless times a week but never stop. I suggest you do not do that! I bought a cheeseburger which comes with fries and fry sauce. This is not your typical fry sauce if you enjoy the flavor of horseradish but not the spice this fry sauce is for you I give the fry sauce at 9.3. I also ordered a peanut butter and banana milkshake. This was probably the best milkshake I have had for a long time not too thick not too thin perfect flavor of peanut butter. Also a delight of Little chunks of soft banana. As for the burger it was just the right size not too big not too small. Plenty of cheese as I requested the brioche bun held the juices in but did not get soggy. The vegetables they put on the burger or fresh and crisp. Don't do what I did and wait 20 years to stop here. On a quick trip through Astoria to visit the Goonie's house, we discovered Custard King. My husband is on the eternal hunt for the BEST chocolate malt. We are from Cleveland, Ohio and there have been hundreds of malts tested. Gabby took our order and assured us that their custard was the best and that the malt would be great. We perused the menu posted on the web, got our order together...and hubby drove 15 miles into town. I have driven right by this old time fast food walk up stand many times and always intended to stop and try it "some day" We had the grand kids with us today and had just worked up an appetite walking up the Astoria Column and then visited the local museum downtown right up the hill from here. It's SPOTLESS! Shiney formed stainless steel counters and fresh paint. The food service area could not have be any cleaner. We ordered soft serve custard and were informed the machine was down but could have a scoop of vanilla or chocolate ice cream in a cup with their choice of 8 toppings or sprinkles for a $1.00! Both kids ordered vanilla with crushed Oreos and received a very generous portion. Total cost $2.00! What a steal. Next time in Astoria if its anywhere near mealtime I am going to try a burger and fries. I have a feeling I am going to love it! Just what you want and more from a roadside spot with adorable neon. Everything I've had has been delicious, thoughtful, and satisfying. My favorite strawberry shake of all time, tasting fresh, and it's drinkable (unlike some shakes you need to eat with a spoon); substantial but not overwrought burgers; fries I'd be happy just eating on their own; yummy and large fish tacos. The oyster po'boy was DELICIOUS and one thing I appreciated was how it was wrapped tightly to keep all the bits together so each bite had everything. It's small, but I get annoyed when sandwiches just fall apart and you don't get to appreciate how the flavors work together. That's what I mean by thoughtful. You get the sense someone is eating the food they cook, wants it to be great, isn't just throwing it out there. Oh, you can also get oyster shooters.
