I'm unfortunately updating my previous positive review after a disappointing experience regarding the 600-mile service on my 2025 BMW S1000RR. To be clear, the service itself was completed professionally and I paid the $420 bill without issue. My frustration is not about paying for maintenance -- it's about feeling misled throughout the process and disappointed by the lack of customer care. When I purchased the bike brand new, I was told the first 600-mile service was included. Because of the Midwest riding season and winter storage, I didn't hit the mileage until later. During visits in January and March, I specifically asked if I could bring the bike in early for service since I was still under the mileage requirement at the time. I was told no and that the bike needed to be at least around 550 miles before the service could be performed. Now, after completing and paying for the service, I was informed that as of January 2026 the bike actually could have been brought in as early as 350 miles. That was extremely frustrating to hear because it directly contradicted what I had been told previously when I made efforts to schedule the service earlier. Had I been given accurate and consistent information from the beginning, this entire situation could have been avoided. What also disappointed me was that the 6-month limitation was never strongly emphasized during purchase or during my follow-up visits. Most dealerships that value long-term relationships would at least provide a courtesy reminder or better guidance regarding an important warranty/service deadline, especially for customers who actively service and purchase through them regularly. Unfortunately, that was not the case here. I completely understand dealerships have policies and need to run a business, but consistency and customer communication matter. I've purchased and serviced 3 BMW motorcycles through them, regularly bought riding gear there, tipped staff generously, and even referred multiple customers who ended up purchasing bikes from them. I genuinely believed I was building a long-term relationship with this dealership. In fact, I was seriously considering purchasing a new M1000R from them as my next bike, but after this experience, I've decided I'll be taking my business elsewhere. This review is not directed at any one employee personally, but rather the overall handling of the situation and lack of customer goodwill. I've been coming to this place since my brother, Dirk Christopher Hostetler (Host, near the end) passed way on October 19th, 2008 and willed me his R1200c. They are amazing and you'd never know that this is the most active BMW dealership in the state. The service department has consistently given me precise diagnostic work, clear estimates, and meticulous documentation of all maintenance, from valve adjustments and final drive service to complex electrical troubleshooting and software updates including when I messed my electrical system up bad by installing an LED nightlight system on it. Their technicians treat older oilheads and newer water-cooled models with equal competence, use OEM parts unless I request alternatives, and always torque to spec and log service intervals so my maintenance history is complete and easy to reference. I sold that 1200 with all its maintenance paperwork and bought an R18. Turnaround times are accurate, communication is proactive (calls, texts, and photos when needed), and they're transparent about what is urgent versus what can wait, which makes long-term ownership planning honest and straightforward. The parts guy and his counter is efficient, knows microfiche and part supersessions cold, and can usually get obscure components within a couple of days. Overall, the operation feels like a high-volume shop in terms of capability and inventory, but with the attention to detail and personal familiarity of a small, specialist BMW-only garage. Do NOT ignore the huge selection of used bikes of EVERY MAKE that they've serviced and, many times, have rebuilt. Their inventory is ENORMOUS and their prices are below market (I am constantly amazed at their below market deals). read more

Short version: The folks at Cycle Werks in Barrington IL misdiagnosed a problem with my 2003 BMW F650GS and charged me $680 for labor and parts even though the bike still won't start. The rest of the story... Earlier this fall I was riding when the bike shut off, no coughs or sputters or rough running, just going 55 MPH down the road and then suddenly coasting with a dead engine. It would not restart so I had it towed home. A little research suggested that a faulty fuel pump could have been the issue, so I replaced the fuel pump with a new aftermarket unit (just the pump, not the entire assembly). That did not fix the problem and the bike would still not start, so I chose to make an appointment to drop it off at Cycle Werks for a proper diagnosis. Of course I let them know that I had already replaced the fuel pump. After a couple of days they called and informed me that even though I had replaced the fuel pump, the issue was still fuel-pump related. They said that water had been pooling on top of the pump assembly (under the seat) and had corroded the harness connections to the point that they wouldn't make good electrical contact. That didn't make sense to me because the bike had been parked in my garage, and I had pictures of the bone dry and dusty area on top of the fuel tank from when I had replaced the pump myself, but I trusted their expertise and authorized what they quoted as a $580 repair. A few more days later they called and left me a message that essentially said "We've finished replacing the fuel pump assembly but the bike still won't start, so now we've found that the ignition coil is also bad." When I called back I expressed my skepticism that two major unrelated systems on the bike (the fuel pump assembly AND the ignition coil) would both fail suddenly and simultaneously. I suggested that perhaps their initial diagnosis of a fuel pump problem was mistaken, and that the coil was the issue all along. They insisted that was not the case, and that the fuel pump assembly and the coil had both failed at exactly the same moment as I was riding down the road. At that point I had no confidence in their ability to properly diagnose or fix the bike, so I made arrangements to go pick it up without authorizing any additional work. My experience with the service department when I picked up the bike removed any doubt I might have had about being misled. Initially they continued with the story about water pooling on top of the pump even after I showed them the pictures of the top of the fuel tank and the pump harness connections perfectly dry just two weeks before I took the bike to them. Then when I asked why, if the problem was corrosion in the harness connectors on top of the pump assembly, they had to also replace the pump itself down inside the tank (which was brand new), their story changed to "Well sometimes new pumps are dead when you get them, we've had that happen to us". I was told there was nothing they could do to reduce the bill, even though the work they did in no way fixed the problem with the bike. In fact the bill was even higher than the $580 (plus tax) that I had authorized, because they billed me for the additional time the technician spent diagnosing the problem after the unnecessary fuel pump replacement. I was (I think understandably) angry. They gave me the choice of paying $680 to take my still-broken bike home, or leaving it with them to put the old fuel pump assembly back in. That would have required a third two-hour round trip with a rented trailer and at that point I had no interest in continuing to deal with them, so I paid the ransom. When I unloaded the bike at home and opened the saddlebags I found the fuel pump assembly they had removed, and on inspection found that the harness connectors (which they had claimed to be corroded to the point of not making contact) were perfectly silver, shiny, and free of any corrosion. I still have that assembly and a picture of the contacts as proof. Their story for why the fuel pump assembly needed to be replaced was 100% a fabrication. I certainly understand that people make mistakes, but what matters is how it's handled. I don't know whether they were somehow mistaken about the terrible corrosion that they claimed to be there, or if it was something more intentional, but in either case they failed to accurately diagnose my bike and then charged me a lot of money for work that did not solve the problem. That is unacceptable. read more

I put a $500 deposit down on a bike in July...because Adam said "there's been a lot of interest in that particular bike, and besides, the deposit is refundable" (note that Cycle Werks failed to provide me with any paperwork behind the deposit)...and I wanted to test ride it before buying it (my offer was subject to an acceptable test ride), which I did and found the feel of the clutch to be less than ideal. I have decided not to purchase the bike because of a change in life circumstances - and even if I was still in the market for a motorcycle, I wouldn't buy one with a wonky clutch. Now Cycle Werks is refusing to refund my deposit. This is straight up a dishonest business practice. If you are considering buying from Cycle Werks...I would think twice! BMW = Bad Manners to Women I do not understand why motorcycle and car dealers do NOT remember that women are consumers too. While my husband was returning parts upstairs I stayed in the showroom - the ONLY person in the showroom by the way. I have three bikes and I'm looking to trade one in - have had my eye on the S1000R. I walked around the showroom for a good 10 minutes and, not only did none of the 3 employees even greet me, not one asked if I needed help or had any questions. Husband came down and knew I'd be at the S1000R bikes and the moment he entered 2 of them engaged HIM, still not a word of acknowledgement to me. This really bugs me...especially when it's SUCH a simple thing to treat the woman as if she is also a viable consumer. Just bought a used bike here. I highly recommend this shop, both for the buying experience and the service. I dealt with John Powers for the sale, and he is quite knowledgeable as well as patient. The initial purchase transaction went smoothly. They inspect the used bikes they get in for any defects. In the case of the bike I bought, I found 4 issues after I took delivery that they willingly fixed, for a minimal cost. While that sounds bad in one sense, they could have told me that once it is off the show room floor, it's my problem. They didn't do that, which tells me they really care about their product and customer service. If I buy another bike, I will buy it here, and will definitely get my service here. I love this dealer. I bought my bike in Chicago BMW a few years ago and was really disappointed with their customer service when it came to maintenance. The service manager at the Chicago shop has a really bad attitude that is bad for business. You can tell he know his stuff, but he is very condescending to customers. Well, this led me to try Cycle Werks @ Barrington. Cycle Werks has a great service department with knowledgeable and friendly people. These guys are experts and do not walk around with an attitude, which is refreshing after my bad experience at Chicago BMW. I will definitely buy my next bike from Cycle Werks. I also, want to express my appreciation to Scott and Guy as they have always been great at servicing my bike. I once took my bike in for service late in November and there was constant snow after that, so I could only pick up the bike safely without a tow. I asked Guy if I could pick it up once the road conditions were safe and he was cool with that (no storage fees). These are the things that win over customers. This location is also convenient for anyone that lives close to the Metra Northwest line. I typically drop the bike off and then take the train back home, since the dealership is close to the Metra Barrington stop. read more

This shop specializes in BMW and Motto Guzzi motorcycles. They sell new, as well as vintage. The new bikes are on the ground floor, but make sure you get upstairs- they've a nice selection of used bikes for sale (mostly BMW), as well as some beautifully restored motto Guzzis on display. I haven't purchased a bike from them, but have had mixed experiences in terms of treatment by the guys who run the place while browsing- sometimes very nice, sometimes attitude. They have a full service department fixing motorcycles, but I've never used them for that. THEIR PARTS GUY IS AWESOME- a genuinely nice, laid back guy and the #1 reason I ever come here. Phone him up, tell him what you need, he'll tell you if they've got it and put it aside waiting for you when you stop in to pick it up. Prices aren't cheap (we're talking BMW parts!) but there are few local options either so when you need a part soon, these guys are your best bet. They sell jackets and helmets and stuff here too- climb the metal spiral stair case up to the third floor for that, but don't expect an enormous selection. They do carry good quality brands here though (Hein Gericke, Arai, etc) and can order whatever size you might need if there's something you want. read more

I tried to buy a bike from them 2 summers ago, and I don't know it was because I am a woman, or if because, I knew what I wanted, R1200RS, and my friend told the salesman that I was coming, so I was an easy sale, but the salesman ignored me. When I was finally able to sit with him after my test ride, he answered several phone calls and allowed others to interrupt our conversation. I actually gave another woman advice on a bike for him. Because he was too busy. I did not purchase the bike from them This summer, 2019, we tried to use them on service, two different bikes. Their service department is disorganized. They had my bike too long, and switch people so often, that I had to start over with a new service writer. I would not recommend them. read more

For service and parts, this place is number one! Their service technicians are all first rate. When you talk to them, you get the sense that working on motorcycles is their chosen career, not just a passing job. They know their stuff and they take the time to do the job right, something I can't say for all the shops I've visited. They take pride in their work and it shows. They also have a large inventory of BMW parts. Their parts guy is excellent, knowledgeable and easy to talk to. He clearly knows BMW motorcycles and seems well qualified to recommend the correct parts for any repair. I have two BMW motorcycles and I really wouldn't think of taking them anywhere else for service. My only complaint, and it's really not a complaint, is that the service department is usually booked up for a least a week or two during the riding season, so if you absolutely have to have your oil changed tomorrow, you might be in trouble. On the other hand, I'm sure if it were a true emergency, they'd find a way to fit you in. read more

This is an interesting shop. New beemers on the lower level and the older (and much more interesting) used and vintage beemers up high. The one thing that I don't like is that when you walk in through the main floor level to look at the new bikes, there's always an employee (owner?) whom seems to "swoop in" and hover asking if I have questions... I just don't enjoy that. I want to be left alone to sit on a bike and when I'm serious about buying yet another motorcycle, I'll initiate...To me, it shouldn't be like going to a car dealership. Those of us whom enter a motorcycle shop like this know bikes...and it should be assumed that we've done our research before we go in to kick tires. Sorry for what sounds like a rant. I apologize. Heck, maybe that go down just to avoid any theft issues... Moving on - I do like the fact that you can sit on everything for the most part. The used/vintage section is always fantastic to check out. Here's why: - $529.06 means that the work schedule, despite any post-purchase aftermarket installs (crash bars), isn't over cramped with other customers, thereby forcing certified technicians to hurry. - $529.06 also means that even the most meticulous details, such as computer resets and the return of OEM parts aren't overlooked. - $529.06 means that when you call in to inform them of a mistake, they don't ask you to work around their schedule. ... and all of that may very well read as excessively harsh but again: $529.06 isn't chump change. My final opinion is that these ARE friendly people. They're good people trying to run a business. They respond to their own errors because we as customers, no matter what the digital plain can offer, are the base of their promotions. Yes, they might smirk when they have to fix their own mistakes as if we shouldn't have called them out on it BUT ... After a disappointing experience and cancelling my contract at BMW Countryside (read my review there) I called these folks @ CW. Spoke with Jason and was treated exceptionally well and very easy to work with. Jason explained it all and within 1 hour we were all done. The service here is professional and top shelf. They (Lee & Jason) delivered my 2018 1200 RT to my home no charge (unlike countryside charges). Everything Jason promised over the phone was what I found after arriving. I purchased a 1200 RT with over $450 in more factory options and still a much lower price than the local competition. I am really pleased how smooth this transaction went.
