Worst pizza ever. Ordered it at 6:30, got there at 6:50 to pay for and pick it up- had to wait until 7:20 when it was ready (nice and hot!). Got home to find little cheese and chewy as well, burnt crust, super greasy too. Got a couple anti-pasta salads - all for over $40 bucks. The pizza was worse than frozen from the store. Had to go since it's my father-in-laws favorite place because of the cheap 18 inch extra large pizza. Like I said, Worst. Pizza. Ever. read more

I wish I could give them 0 stars because this is a JOKE. I placed an order for my boyfriend to pick up around 4:30. Mind you, I worked until 6 and just got home at 6:30 ready to eat my food. I told the man over the phone that I wanted manicotti but NO MEAT. I literally asked him "there's no meat in that right? I can't eat meat." He said let me check-- went and checked, "nope there's no meat." I get home and open the food. It's very clearly in a meat sauce. I call the guy back and nicely ask if it can be remade because I can't eat meat. He says I can BUY another one, but there will be no refund or remake. Are you kidding me? The food is UNEATEN and will not be eaten because I'm a vegetarian. I recently moved down the street and we've been here a few times and never had any issues. NEVER again. Terrible service. They now use some seeded knock off bread. I pray they just ran out, but it was an hour after opening on Sunday. The inside of the sandwich was great, but the bread is just as important. So first off, I recently had fought throat cancer and it's been very difficult to find things I can eat once again as my tastebuds where not only destroyed from both radiation and chemotherapy but I also have no saliva glands which makes stuff a bit harder to eat, I e tried to get back to things that I used to eat prior to battling cancer, I had tried slices of pizza from various places and just could not handle the sauces used, the acidity burned like a tablespoon of habañero salsa, I continued to try various places in the hopes I could one day enjoy a slice of pizza well......today is that day! I ventured out and ordered two slices of pizza to bring home (up in Carmel Valley quite a ways from La Mesa) but man oh man has this hit the spot! for the very first time I am truly enjoying eating pizza once again, not just any pizza mind you...a D'Amatos slice of pizza, know the difference my Cancer Clinic I attend is located at Grossmont Hospital, which simply means I'll be back! My partner and I have been enjoying D'amatos since we moved here at the beginning of 2024. The pizza itself is fantastic. The crust is soft and pillowy inside and crispy outside, they are not stingy with the cheese and it's overall really flavorful and tasty. The customer service leaves much to be desired- I'm a big tipper but this place gets me questioning my 25% tip standards. Maybe I've just been in on bad nights but the phone etiquette and face-to-face manners are just... bad. The kids who work there seem to be having a nice time until I walk in and then the mood goes sour. I've worked a lot of food service, so I get it, but it's not that hard to plaster on a fake smile or at least be courteous to a customer who is friendly and regularly tips well. read more

Been a loyal customer for years however their service has gone down greatly including a huge turnover of staff. A few months ago, I tried calling an early order in to meet the mad rush of the weekend and they said they weren't taking any more orders and to call back later suggesting maybe an hour before I wanted a pizza. I said wait. I am calling early because I want pizza and you won't take my order? I called early to put my order in. He said well you can try later. Who turns away customers for calling in early? Decided to try again recently, even though I was disappointed last time. My husband called in the order for 2 medium pizzas with 3 toppings each and they charged him $52!! We could've gotten 2 large pizzas for that price. When I walked in to talk to them, they said well we "ASSUME" if you order 2 medium pizzas with 3 toppings that you just want the regular priced pizza but if you only order 2 mediums with 1 topping, we "ASSUME" that you want the $25 special. Verbatim they said "ASSUME" twice. So I said to the person at the front, you're basically "ASSUMING" what people want and not asking them or telling them about your specials?!? You are charging & "ASSUMING" at your convenience? You are not offering to tell them about the specials when they call? All they could say was I'm sorry ma'am. No, we are sorry for the inconvenience. No, we apologize for not telling you about the specials. No offer to try and make the customer happy or offer a solution. They could've said, I'm sorry for the inconvenience, can I give you some free breadsticks and handed me one of their flyers to remind me of their specials. I would've been happy that they tried to make the customer happy in the situation by offering some type of resolution but no, nothing. No ownership whatsoever. No customer service. So very disappointing since we have been ordering from them for over 25 years now. We'll be going to Pietro's from now on where we've never had an issue. read more

We normally get the family meal deal here which is fantastic but we have also ordered other pizzas other than the Pepperoni. The food has always been great, the location is easy to get too. Over the years I have driven by this place hundreds of times. The other day at work, one of my colleagues had ordered some for delivery and he offered me a slice. Instantly I was a fan because the pizza was really good. I have been on a calzone kick lately so I decided to order one from here for dinner tonight. When I arrived, I was surprised to learn that they do not have a dine in section. It is all take out. I ordered the #4 calzone, which consisted of ham, sausage, bell pepper, mushrooms, ricotta, which I love in a calzone, and some mozzi. The calzone also came with a large bowl of meat sauce! What a bonus. I can tell this calzone was made with a lot of "love." The fillings were superb with just the right amount. The crust was very good as well. It was moist and chewy towards the center, but it was a little on the tough side towards the ends. All in all, the calzone was fantastic. The price was great at $7.50 plus tax. Great little place. Still our favorite after 20 years!!!! Crispy crust, perfect sauce and a ridiculously delightful amount of cheese!!! Lots of pizzerias have popped up in the neighborhood in the past two decades. Let me sum it up (with a borrowed D'motto): Often imitated, never duplicated!!!! There are at least 5 pizza places that are much closer to us. We've tried them all. They've got nothin' on D'Amatos! Worst pizza I've ever had! Tried it two times over the last couple of years. The first time was regular crust and whatever topping and their default cheese. It was a mass of bread and thick cheese that I found very unappetizing. Then tried again with thin crust. The half that had sausage was soaked in grease and even soaked through the box. The cheese half had some sort of odd mozzarella that cooled to a tough rubbery texture. We drive to Lemon Grove to go to Lido's and they make an awesome pizza. I have no association with Lido's, just drive a bit further for an awesome pizza. read more
