I've been buying food from D'Amato's for 23 years- as long as I've lived in La Mesa and their "family meal" is one of our faves! Today, I ordered the personal pizza to be delivered with extra cheese and mushrooms. I called the restaurant and asked specifically for packets of Parmesan and red pepper flakes to come with the pizza. Well- it was delivered with no Parmesan or red pepper flakes. The pizza was okay. The crust was extra, extra thick! I guess maybe that's the way it comes on a personal size pizza but I wasn't expecting that. Next time I'll order slices instead of the personal pizza. A little too much sauce and definitely didn't have extra cheese which I did request in my initial online order. I was disappointed. It's frustrating to pay a $3 delivery charge and pay a $5 tip to the driver and then be disappointed that I didn't get what I wanted :( read more

So it took about 90 minutes for the pizza I ordered for pick up. But Covid, you know, things are busy. But when I got home and lifted the lid, it was a mass of greasy cheese and toppings that were not even connected to the dough. It literally slid off like the toppings were avoiding the dough. Frankly, I don't blame them (the toppings). It was the greasiest, most unappetizing ball of dough (with SH*t on top) that I have encountered. Many La Mesans have recommended Damatos on Nextdoor, and I thought it was well-deserved for their pizza; at first. But something has happened to their pizza making. I've gotten pies that were drowned in cheese, underbaked, and recently asked for a well-done pie and it was definitely burned (blackened overall including crust.) That's not what "well-done" means. Maybe the pandemic has forced them to hire a new chef or I've had a run of bad luck, but I cant, after three bad experiences, recommend them. The first few times, we enjoyed their pizza. The last two times (including tonight), there was waaaay too much cheese. It weighed down the crust to soggy, paper-thinness. The owner must be losing so much money on cheese the way the pizza cook overloads it! The sauce and other toppings are great. Overcharged with no explanation or offer for a refund or credit. We ordered a large cheese and medium pepperoni pizza. Charged FIFTY THREE DOLLARS. Didn't seem right so when we called the man said there was a new person being trained and made several errors and overcharged us for extra toppings we didn't get. His response. I've tried the food here a few times because my family often orders delivery from here for whatever reason. It's just an average place, there's nothing special about the food here, the service is good but it's not really great enough that I would choose to order from here personally. I have attempted to eat the pizza, but to be perfectly honest it's just not my thing. It's really greasy, and I'm not attacking the restaurant, it's just dripping with grease to the point that it goes through the crust. And speaking of said crust, the 'thin' crust is not actually thin, it's more like average crust somewhere else. The salads are okay though and I've tried the sandwiches as well. I was fed lies about the driver not knowing it was an apartment, then that the driver went to the wrong apartment, and that the driver had called me and got no answer (although my call log CLEARLY shows no calls were made or received!!! I do so love D'Amatos Pizza! I have ordered it over and over and it reminds me of Filippi's--and that's excellent because D'Amato's is convenient and delivers to my home. I tried their pasta--it was good, but I wasn't a fan of their tomato sauce--that's why only 4 stars. They have wonderful Italian torpedo sandwiches, too. My coworker was having a bad night so I decided....why not get her her favorite pizza? Bad mistake. First of I had a delivery time that was 30-50 mins from my order. No prob. After an hour wait, I found out that my order was listed as "delivered". As I am disputing that it wasn't, I received a call from the driver stating he had been trying to get a hold of me. Funny because this was the first call I received but whatever, it was fine because my friend was waiting for her food and we were all hungry. Man, close to 60 bucks of food down the drain. First of all, the D'Amatos special pizza was inedible. The majority of the pizza was burnt and on top of that it was cold. It was as if they rebaked a cold pizza and had it sit for 30 mins before delivering it. On top of that with all the sodium enhanced meats it was entirely too salty. I had one bite and I was done. The pizza made my friend nauseous and she apologized because she couldn't eat it and she was about to vomit. The manicotti was also burned and I just ate the added meat balls because I was pissed that I spent so much money and I'm going to have to throw most of it away. The garlic bread was the only decent edible food but it was cold. And I ordered 2 tiramisu that was missing from the order. The salad look wilted and warm. I couldn't call to complain or request a refund or at least my missing tiramisu because they were already closed. I'm just going to stick to Pizza Hut or Dominos because at least they're consistent and I know what to expect. Plus I won't be spending as much or wasting for that matter. I wish I had taken pixes to show you how awful the food looked but we were busy that night as our hospital was inundated with a rise in COVID patients and we didn't have time to get another lunch in. What a disappointment. Luckily it was so bad that we lost our appetites so we didn't go hungry the rest of the shift. WARNING THIS PIZZA WILL MAKE YOU SICK. My girlfriend and I are staying nearby and saw this come up for suggested pizza joints and were excited to give this place a try. After waiting around for our pizza we finally received our 3 topping pizza with 90% of the toppings slopped on one side. The slices of the pizza were laughably unequal, but the worst was the oil soaked pizza. We regrettably managed to get a few slices down; but within a couple hours of ingesting that mess our stomachs were going through hell. Pizza for those who like pizza! Very very cheesy! The cheese will move do not stress you can place it back on the pizza. Also, depending on where you live, it will come literally fresh out of the oven. They must teleport themselves to your house or something. But it's just a simple thick chewy delicious pizza. If I could give less than one star I would. We have been ordering food from there for over 15 years. Tonight we ordered the family meal. Driver showed up with the order. As we opened the bag inside we noticed the salads were missing. We immediately called the restaurant to say we didn't get the salads. They said they would send the salads right out with another driver. It's been over an hour and we are still waiting. We called the restaurant again to tell them we are still waiting. Because who eats a salad after dinner. The girls who answered the phone were less than helpful and wouldn't even give the managers name. Finally after several minutes the manager got on the phone. The manager did say they would give us a credit for salads the next time we ordered. Hey that's great but what about my meal that is now cold. I was really bummed to find out that almost 1/2 the kitchen staff had their noses hanging out of their masks or their masks around their necks. I realize it gets hot in the kitchen and it sucks, but I'm feeding a husband with compromised health. I paid for my pizza. I tipped the staff and then threw the pizza away. It's unfortunate that the first time I decided to leave a review had to be a subpar one. I have ordered from D'Amatos pizza several times and have never really had any issues. The pizza is decent as well as the price, and it's close to my house so I can make a quick drive and don't have to wait for delivery. I ordered a calzone tonight and was told 20-25 minutes until it would be ready. 40 minutes later I am walking out with my order. I get home and what I received was literally a ball of dough with an uncooked inside, burnt bottom and paper thin (if any) top. I called and they seemed indifferent and asked if I wanted another one. Initially I said no until I cut into it and discovered the aforementioned issues. So I called back and they said they would have a new one ready in 15 minutes. Fast forward almost a half an hour, and I received my second calzone. This one was marginally better but seemed completely thrown together. The ham in their calzone was a whole slice. Not cut up, just a slice of ham inside. The calzone itself was admittedly better put together, but still far from what I have come to expect. I have generally been pleased with the food, which is the only reason I am not giving this particular order a single star. The guy who brought me out the second pizza seemed genuinely apologetic but when I came in with my original order, the young girl at the register pretty much ignored me (assuming she didn't want to or know how to deal with anything like this) until she had to acknowledge me being there. I'll be honest, pizza prep and delivery was my bread and butter when I was in high school and I never made anything that looked or was prepared in such a half asked way. Unacceptable on all fronts is what comes to mind. It's going to be a while before I order from here again since the food and service are decent at best and inconsistent at worst. So we have been ordering from here for the last 3 years. While we loved the food, im afraid that i probably will no longer be a customer. Specifically due to them not listening. Lately i order and its just wrong. Today i called to complain, not only was my hubbys spaghetti cold,but about them putting sausage when i asked them to omit it. Their pizza is amazing! Best pizza around however there is a specific employee named Mike who is absolutely terrible. I see there are also other reviews on him, I have also spoken to management about him however even after speaking with them and going back in he has the same snarky and condescending attitude. He should not be able to work with customers at all, he makes customers feel unwelcome and has driven us away from wanting to eat here. I really do truly want to support this business but it is Mike and his terrible attitude that keep us away. We have been going here for years but will likely steer clear for a long time due to Mike and the way he speaks to customers. We would absolutely return if we did not have to communicate with him in any way but I feel uncomfortable asking on the phone if he is in before we pick up our pizza. No complaints on the pizza or other employees. My first visit to D'Amatos, so I looked at the menu online and noticed they also had coupons - I went with the XL w/ 3 toppings for $17.95. The pizza came with huge chunks of sausage, plenty of onions and pepperoni. Cut in 12 slices - Pizza was piping hot, ready in about 40 min - worth the wait!! We've lived in La Mesa for 20+ years and we don't order pizza often (about once a year) but when we do, this is the place we call. Our house is set back from the road and at night it can be tricky to find so we usually go and pick it up ourselves. The extra large pizza is huge and they certainly don't skimp on the cheese. Pizzas are consistently delicious and we've also had their family meal deal and torpedo sandwiches. It's all tasty although anything that has lettuce may not be the freshest lettuce you'll ever have (it's usually brown) so we tend to stick with the pizzas. Overall, I recommend it! read more
