D/Lai Ice Cream has been on my list since this summer, and I finally got a chance to try it last week while grabbing dinner with a college friend at Western Market. You can immediately tell the guy running the pop-up is incredibly passionate about ice cream. He let us sample a few flavors and was genuinely excited to talk through them. I usually gravitate toward berry-flavored ice cream, and I really enjoyed the creamy textures and richness of all the flavors we tried. I ended up ordering a mixed berry scoop. The dude mentioned he mixed some leftover strawberries and blueberries, then threw in some raspberries mixed with a bit of crumble? and went to town. I really liked how well the three berries worked together, but after a few spoonfuls, the richness really set in. My previously transparent spoon actually turned opaque from all the fat in the ice cream, and I started to notice a slightly filmy mouthfeel. That said, the flavors themselves were top-notch, and it's clear the guy truly cares about what he's making. D/Lai also sells pint-sized ice cream, which feels like the perfect guilty-pleasure treat to enjoy at home. Overall, very creamy, very rich, and thoughtfully made ice cream.

Delicious and very creamy ice cream. It's basically a station type of place inside a food market. There's plenty of tables nearby to enjoy. Very limited in flavors. The staff were super nice and friendly. They just opened this past December and seemed to be in works of finalizing their stand.

Artesian ice cream can be found at the Western Market! There's a small stand where smooth, velvety and luxurious ice cream can be had. The workers will give you a free taste. One scoop is in a 4 oz cup or you can get two scoops for $7, in a bigger cup! There's even a larger one for three scoops! The chocolate had some crunchies in it and the caramel sea salt had just the right amount of salt. If I had a freezer, the pint would have been very cost effective at $13. Flavors sell out fast but they do eventually replenish the pans! Evening hours, you can find more flavors where the pans are not empty! During lunch hours the ice cream pans can be almost empty!

Perfect as a dessert spot after grabbing lunch in Western Market! The ice cream is very creamy and smooth and I love their flavor selection. I sampled the seasonal spice cake which was super good, but I ended up going with the lemon cookie which tastes like Girl Scout Lemonades but better. Also the scoop is actually gigantic - I got the single cup but I feel like the amount of ice cream was more than even a double at other ice cream places. Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to support a local shop!

They have a great list of unique rotating flavors, and it's always fun to come back to try out their new seasonal releases. A few of my favorites over the years have been their hibiscus sorbet -- a delightful dairy-free addition to their Hispanic Heritage Month flavors that is the perfect balance of tangy and sweet -- the cinnamon cardamom -- a super spiced ice cream that, despite being freezing cold, feels like you're about to drink a warm beverage -- and blueberry sour cream crumble. When I'm feeling less adventurous, they also have a really solid strawberry ice cream that uses real berries (none of that artificial nonsense you see in grocery stores) with a delightful fruity, slightly tangy flavor. There's usually a pretty long line, but it moves quite quickly since they don't allow samples. It's also a small space that gets crowded pretty easily, so I'd recommend taking your ice cream to go and enjoying it as you walk around Mt Pleasant or on the benches just below the entrance to Mount Desert.

The mutabbaq is good, but the fruit flavors were not good. Blueberry was alright but I couldn't taste the sour cream at all. Watermelon was artificial and bad too. They also don't let people sample, which is weird for an ice cream place. Overall, I would not recommend this place because paying $8+ to take a random chance on ice cream flavors is not worth it at all. At least let us sample first...

I've tried other DDL lattes from other coffee shops around the city and this one is by far the best. It's good hot and iced. The seasonal strawberry matcha is also very good. This place is great for the seasonal drinks and gelato flavors using local ingredients. My absolute favorite seasonal flavor is the Blackberries and Cream gelato. I ate it so much last summer that I could see the color of the gelato get darker as the season progressed and as the berries reached their peak. I got a few hand packed pints to keep in the freezer but they didn't last long. The mascarpone & berries is my favorite classic flavor. I've been to every Dolcezza location in DC and my favorite is the DuPont location. The baristas are chill and somehow their drinks taste better than the other locations. Not sure how that's possible but I notice a difference. I think it has something to do with how the drink order is entered at the register. At another location, I noticed my DDL latte was entered as a latte with DDL syrup and it was noticeably off. Not sweet at all. When I asked the barista he said there was no DDL button but at DuPont the drink is perfect every time. I'm not usually focused on nitpicking but if I'm paying $10 for a coffee, I expect the taste to be consistent regardless of location. Back to DuPont. This location has decent seating but definitely isn't appropriate for longer study sessions during busy times. There's a large communal table and bar style seating along the front window that is great for people watching (or construction watching). It's conveniently located, about a 10 minute walk away from the DuPont metro. Is Dolcezza expensive? Yes. Will I continue to use my discretionary income on $10 coffee and gelato. Yes, because it makes me happy and it's an act of self care.

The tangy Greek yogurt paired perfectly with the sweet, citrusy orange preserves, creating a unique and refreshing flavor that kept me coming back for more. I loved it so much that I ordered a small two-scoop cup and even took home a pint to enjoy later. The only downside wasn't the shop itself--it was the unpleasant odor outside while we were enjoying our ice cream on the benches.
