Had a family dinner one weekday at this place. We loved the food and the drinks. Nothing much to complain, but the food didn't knock our socks off for the price tag. Hence the 4 stars instead of 5. We had walked in knowing its towards the expensive end, but expected a tad bit amp-ed up version of the food. Having said that, the kitchen staff here does a fabulous job plating the dishes. Its almost like art on the plate. Have a look at the salmon dish. My son said it tasted as good as it looked. However, my veg pasta was a little too al dente for my taste. Had dinner on an early Friday evening at Da Claudio when it was quiet (much more livelier by the time we were leaving). Very friendly service in a casual setting. Based on some of the other Yelp reviews, figured that we had to try the Lasagna and we weren't disappointed. It was a very nice version. My sister got the rosemary gimlet and enjoyed it but said the rosemary flavor was very light. She also liked the whiskey sour. The bartender was courteous and attentive. i've visited twice whilst on work trips to nyc. each time i sat at the bar. the bartenders were friendly and helpful. the servers were prompt, and the ambiance was communal. there are some obvious regulars which is a good sign. the bucatini arrabbiata is very spicy, but flavourful. just be forewarned if you were expecting mild flavouring. the braised lamb shank was cooked perfectly and the puttanesca complemented it well. don't overlook their house-aged negroni. they spend 3 months in a cask before being bottled so the next batch can start. read more

Da Claudio is a very nice spot near Fulton Street Station. It's great for lunch and nice for a work lunch or a quick lunch with a friend. I always get the Black Linguine (squid ink pasta) with Prawns (head on) I think it is the tastiest dish and I have been getting it for years now. We flew in from California and were dedicated to the food culture NY had to offer. As we stumbled upon Da Claudio we were greeted by our waitress Flora who sat us immediately with menus and waters. We started with the Tirimasu martini then Flora recommended a delicious wine to pair with our entrees. We had the wagu bolognese, calamarata, and the lamb ragu which melted in our mouths. The food is what kept us but what really won us over was the attentiveness from Francisco, a gentlemen from Oaxaca who made sure our needs were met while engaging in conversation with us about the many wonders of the city. We started with the Piatto del Salumiere and Fritto Misto; I had the Eggplant Parm as my main course which was delicious, and we finished with some Italian cookies and dessert wine. the wine lie is, as one would expect, all Italian wines - and the sommelier knew their winelist very well, and easily made recommendations for us based on our preferences. I am only dropping 1/2 a star because of the dining room acoustics; it was was quite loud in there, making it difficult to hear which was surprising for lunchtime. Got great value from the Happy Hour menu! They have limited options but the price point and availability of Happy Hour on the weekend makes it worth it for a casual catch up with friends on the weekend. The appetizers were alright! The vibe could have been better with dim lights to create a more enjoyable experience! The Calamari was not the best I've had since it was just oily and overly battered and the flavor could've been more pronounced! The Ricotta Gnocchi in the Pesto sauce on the other hand was very enjoyable! The complimentary bread served was not toasted or warm so it did not necessarily enhance the experience! The service however spoilt my overall experience as our server kept hovering around us, rushing us to keep ordering while we were enjoying our current order and having a good time catching up with each other; wiping our table while we were still dining which also pressured us to rush our meal and watch out for bits falling on our clothes; and was evidently intemidating with her responses and comments to us and her collegues about us. The guanciale in the rigatoni was a bit chewy (but haven't had guanciale enough to know what the "gold standard" is), and for $27 I do wish they were more generous with the quantity of protein. The tiramisu was good - the ladyfingers were not soaked in enough espresso (if any?) but the mascarpone was fluffy and light. Service was friendly and efficient (I called and the gentleman said the food would be ready in 15 mins). Ambiance inside was a bit dark but don't have much to say given that I ordered to go. Overall a solid spot but in a city with such a competitive Italian food scene it is tough to call Da Claudio a standout. I saw this place on Yelp while staying nearby on business. I swore off ordering from restaurants I haven't set foot in, because I've had bad experiences doing that, so I walked about 10 mins and went in. It's really pretty. I wanted take out so the host walked me over to the bar to order and wait. Bartender was friendly and ordering was easy. I got the risotto with mozzarella, cherry tomatoes & pistachio basil pesto - it was delicious, even after the walk back to my hotel.
