Stopped by here on our trip to Kihei and super glad we did. Super small place with about 4-5 tables but the food came out fast, and the staff was very friendly. We ordered the loco Moco and bbq ribs plate. The food was very generous for the price. No wonder the ribs were close to $50 since they gave about 4-5 slabs. That meal alone was able to be saved for another meal.
Is this place small? Yes! Is this place a little harder to find? Maybe. Is this place worth going to every time? ABSOLUTELY! Fresh off the plane, first stop in Maui is almost always Da Kitchen. We were worried it was lost forever a few years ago, but nope, they just moved down the road. It's definitely not a formal place, but so relaxed, which is what I look for in Maui. We shared the Kalbi Ribs, and we were starving, and we couldn't eat them all especially after diving into the veggie spring rolls and deep fried musubi. My wife that doesn't usually even like musubi, enjoyed the deep fried version Da Kitchen offered. So go for it..try it if you have never had musubi, try this deep fried version!
Unassuming place at a strip mall, but fantastic food! We stopped here for dinner on our way to the airport before flying back home, and I'm sorry I couldn't take my leftovers! I had the kalbi plate which was one lb of ribs on a bed of rice and a side of macaroni salad. We also got the kitchen Bento plate which was Spam musubi, tempura, teriyaki chicken and beef, and chicken katsu. PLENTY of food for the two and a half of us! There are only a few tables inside and if you're lucky to be seated, they'll take your order and serve you. Otherwise, order at the counter and hope to find a spot outside: first come, first served. We got there right around 530 on a Friday and got lucky, the place was packed before we knew it! I also didn't realize they were featured by Guy Fieri which might partly explain the crowds...though I suspect the delicious food and the fast and friendly service might have something to do with it too. Can't wait to come back!
Da Kitchen knows how to deliver variety. They offer several combo plates that are tempting. Last time, I had a hard time deciding between the Mixed Plate and the Bento Plate. Both options have a lot of food and I swear I planned to share it with my bestie. They both have teriyaki chicken, teriyaki beef, katsu chicken and rice & mac salad. The Mixed Plate comes with breaded mahi mahi. The Bento comes with Spam Musubi and shrimp tempura. I know that the shrimp comes from Costco, so I prefer the mahi. So I ordered the Mixed Plate and a Spam Musubi to go with it. It was ready as soon as we got there to pick it up. Every bit was delicious! We each got 2 meals out of this feast.
Soooo good! My husband had the Hawaiian plate. My son had the teriyaki beef the Kiki size which was huge and I had the Poké bowl. The dining room is small, but the wait is short. The service was quick. We left stuffed everything was delicious!! Definitely adding it to our Maui must have list.
Stopped by on a weekend night for loco moco and they are busyyyy. The good thing is they have outdoor seating (but it's not full service). We ordered the loco moco, which was a hefty portion and decent tasting (but by no means the best loco moco we've had). We also ordered the fried spam musubi and we loved the concept! The crunchy breading was a great touch and you dip the whole thing in a sweet soy sauce glaze/sauce. Only complaint is the rice to spam ratio...there was way too much rice.
I don't think I've ever eaten as much rice as I have anywhere else. Each plate had rice and they even gave rice with their side dishes. Nonetheless, the food here was amazing. I tried eating as much rice as I could because it did pair well with both the loco moco and kalbi we got. The kalbi had this amazing char and the flavor was sweet and savory. A little pricey, but worth it on vacation. I never had loco moco, but it was definitely a great first experience. It was very saucy and the meat was cooked well. The egg makes it creamy. We also had the deep fried spam masubi and it was decent and not too heavy as an appetizer.
We were visiting Maui and always like to try the "Da Kitchen" chain places on the islands. This one is amazing. It seems consistently busy. The three of us ordered different dishes. My daughters eat gluten and dairy free.This place accommodates their dietary requirements. Staff is very friendly, Service is fast. It is a small place, but there are a handful of tables outside. Can't wait to try more dishes.
I stopped by here 2 days ago with my father for lunch. He had mentioned wanting some traditional Hawaiian food, so I fired up Yelp and found Da Kitchen. We headed over to the strip mall with Longs Drugs and had to circle a couple of times before spotting it tucked away in the corner. Da Kitchen has both indoor and outdoor seating, with indoor seating for dine in and outdoor seating more geared toward takeout. Inside they have surfboards on one wall and a giant chalkboard menu on the other. For lunch on this day both my dad and I went with a mixed plate. I had thought about ordering the deep fried musubi as well, but it would have been a lot of food and I was already getting plenty. The menu described the mixed plate as teriyaki chicken, teriyaki beef, chicken katsu, and breaded mahi. When it arrived, they were not kidding about the portion size. I started with the mahi since it was on top and really enjoyed it both plain and with the tartar sauce. The fish was hot and glistening and the breading was crispy with a nice flavor. Next I tried the teriyaki beef. The flavor was decent but I found it to be a bit dry. Somewhere along the way I also finished all of the mac salad, which had potato in it and a good overall flavor. After that I moved on to the chicken katsu, which was thin and crispy on the outside. The katsu sauce paired nicely with it. I did not finish everything and ended up saving the katsu, chicken teriyaki, and rice for later. The chicken teriyaki reheated well and broke apart easily with a nice sweet flavor, although the skin did get a bit rubbery which I will chalk up to it sitting in the fridge. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. My dad said the mahi was his favorite fish he had on Maui, and I was impressed by the portion sizes. I would still like to go back and try that deep fried musubi.
I came all the way to Hawaii, and I wanted to try it all. That included Hawaiian food. Da Kitchen delivered. The staff were so nice and friendly. They helped me decide what to get. I learned that one "plate" is enough food for 3 people. We had leftovers for days. My husband ordered fried spam musubi. It certainly looked cool. I tried lau lau. I learned that I don't care for lau lau, but that's on me. I'm glad I tried it. He got something that had everything--all the meats. I tried his kahlua pork. Staff were so nice and excited to help us try local cuisine. While it might not be my thing, I recommend Da Kitchen if you want to try the local specialities while in town.
3.5 stars Da Kitchen is tucked in the corner of a plaza and serves classic Hawaiian fare. It's a casual spot where you walk up to the counter and order. They don't allow you to sit inside until you're dining in but there are some tables outside. We ordered the deep fried musubi ($6.99), kalbi mix plate ($31), and katsu moco ($26.50). The deep fried musubi was different than what I'm used to but it was decent. I liked the dipping sauce but you could taste more of the deep fried part than the spam musubi part. I would've preferred the spam to be thicker to stand out a little more. The kalbi mix plate included both kalbi and chicken which were both really good. The katsu moco is their most popular and had a large patty but the inside was a little mushy. The chicken katsu was decent but could've used more sauce. Out of everything we ordered the kalbi mix plate was my favorite. I also tried some of the garlic noodles which were good. They had large portions but it was just okay.

When you arrive, you'll have to write your name down on a waitlist and wait outside. They will call you inside once a table is available. I ordered the teriyaki chicken and Kalua combo. Huge portions. The teriyaki chicken was flavorful and pull apart. The kalua was good too. The fried spam musubi is a must try. The interior was crispy and came with a dipping sauce. My boyfriend got DK burger and it was SERIOUS HUGE. He said it was a solid burger. They say the serving sizes are huge and it really lives up to it! Definitely would recommend!! read more

This place is tucked away in a shopping center and is definitely a hidden gem. There is a bit of a wait to dine in so if you're in a hurry, order to go. If you want to dine in, add your name to the list and wait outside for your name to be called. The staff were friendly and attentive. I ordered the chicken katsu and Spam musubi. Both were absolutely delicious! The portions are pretty big so honestly, I could've shared my dish. The katsu was cooked well and the pork was very flavorful. I enjoyed my meal. It was a MUST grab authentic spam musubi and this place was the top selection in research on the island, and they didn't disappoint! I never had fried musubi before and it has forever changed my life and it's all I crave now! My 8yr old never had musubi and he loved the fried one, he's also a huge fan of spam now (haha) Will definitely visit Da Kitchen when we visit Maui in near future! Place is very small, being popular they request those that are there to dine inside (there's some tables outside as well) to dine and if making order to go, to sit outside in seating area and they'll bring your order to you. read more

We got take-out and were very happy with how quickly we got our food. Service: Awkward. In the middle of putting in our order with the cashier, a waitress cut us off and started talking to the cashier. The cashier then continued on the conversation with her instead of asking us to please wait or hold. Food: Fried spam musubi: Lukewarm instead of hot. Spam slices were actually pretty thin too so it felt like mostly rice. Other than that, the taste was good and not too greasy. Spam, ham, and egg sando: I actually don't remember if there was ham in this LOL. But this was delicious as well. We originally came here because my boyfriend wanted to try their deep fried spam musubi's so we can take it to the beach. We came here a second time the second day to eat the loco moco. The deep fried spam masubi's were so good and perfect on the beach. We were hungry and it was a great snack. The loco moco was a big portion so we shared and it was very filling for both of us. The restaurant seems to be popular because there were a lot of people. We went exactly at the opening time on the 2nd day so it worked out and we did take out on the first day. This has been my favorite place to eat of our Maui trip. It is a little corner restaurant in a shopping center. They offer many choices of Hawaiian cuisine. It has a homey vibe with amazing service. The young ladies who served us were extremely nice, and my family all voted that they were the best service of our trip thus far. In addition to this, the food was amazing! So delicious, we all left extremely full, or as we like to say, "Fat and happy." If you are in Maui, you definitely need to go check out Da Kitchen. read more

Favorite first stop after getting off a plane to come and eat lunch. We always get the mixed plate. Spring rolls are little crunchy bites of goodness. Service was fantastic. We were greeted with a smile and our server was very friendly. The indoor seating area is small but comfortable. Get there early as after 6pm it fills up with local families which is always a good sign. This restaurant was featured on Diners, Dirve ins and Dives, which was a nice surprise. I ordered the Mahi fish sandwich with a side of potato Mac salad. Portion size was generous. I ate the first half like a sandwich and the second half just the fish. My family and I have been coming here since I was a little kid as soon as we got off the plane, and the quality and taste haven't changed since!!! Amazing flavor and huge portions!! We ordered the chicken Katsu and then katsu cutlet (same as chicken just with gravy and onions instead of bbq sauce like katsu) I ordered to go and food was ready in less than 20 minutes! The portions are insane - two people could def eat out of one order - we ended up order saving one for the next day! Cute spot in a shopping center - plenty of parking and seating indoors mainly. read more
Came for lunch on a Monday at 12:30 in mid October. Most tables were taken but they did have a few outside that were for take out customers only. We managed to snag one of those and ordered at the counter. Had to try the regular spam misubi and fried spam misubi. Couldn't decide between all the proteins so got the bento plate which had teriyaki beef and chicken, spam misubi, chicken katsu, and tempura shrimp. My favorite was the fried spam misubi-super crunchy outer coating, and a different take on a yummy staple. The bento plate was just ok--chicken didn't taste super fresh and the beef was sort of dry like jerky. The fried coating on the tempura shrimp was not true tempura. Also had one of the freezes which is basically a few pumps of syrup blended with ice. Kid liked it though. read more

We were loyal patrons of the Da Kitchen in Kahului and so happy when they reopened (although we wish it was in Kaanapali!) we still made the drive down to Kihei twice, they are that good. The food was some of the best we had in our 10 day stay, and huge portions too. It's a smaller place and not as nice of ambiance, but the service is super friendly and top notch. I honestly can't recommend them more. Our favorite dishes are the tempura mahi mahi and Korean kalbi. The mahi has converted multiple people that said they don't like fish. And the teriyaki beef is also delicious. Make sure to check them out! read more

Da Kitchen is definitely popular, so we came in with high expectations based on the reviews. But honestly, it ended up feeling overrated for me and my family. The portions are massive, and to be fair the price matches the amount of food you get. The problem is that it's just way too much for us. I'd personally rather see them cut the portion in half and lower the price by 20-30%. That would be a much better fit for how we like to eat. We ordered Combo #3 (kalua pork, Spam, chicken teriyaki, and rice). Everything was just too salty for our taste, and I couldn't even finish half the plate. My son also ordered one of the popular combos with chicken katsu, and it was the same story for us: huge portion, but not something we enjoyed enough to keep eating. It might be perfect for people who want big portions and bold seasoning, but it wasn't for us. That said, our waiter was genuinely great. Super friendly and helpful. 5 stars for him. read more

Beware the LauLau comes wrapped in an impenetrable leafy labyrinth. Once you figure out how to open it...pretty good! You will not leave hungry. The fried musubi is a must have and was the best part of the meal - we are thinking of getting more. Honestly, if you got five of those you might be set. But the menu has many many choices, so we don't think we've uncovered what is truly best here. They need a picture of their guava cheesecake because it was beautiful and didn't get enough praise. We ordered food over the phone, so it'd be a quick pick up and I'm so glad we did. I thought it'd be empty, because we arrived near closing time, but it was pretty busy still! We were in Wailea, so we decided to drop by Da Kitchen in Kihei on the way back to Ka'anapali. I had the Hawaiian plate (kalua pig, lau lau, lomi lomi salmon, poi, rice and mac salad, while she had the saimin. We shared guava cheesecake for dessert. The Hawaiian plate brok da mout! The portions were massive. It was pricey, but could easily feed two normal people. The kalua pig and lau lau rivaled James Beard winner Helena's in Kalihi on O'ahu. The pork was so moist and flavorful in both items. Likewise, the saimin was the most protein packed saimin I have ever seen. It had char siu, spam, beef and kamaboko. In addition, the noodles were yellow and nice & chewy. Lastly, the cheesecake was silky smooth, and bursting with guava flavor. It was one of the best versions of this dessert I have had in the islands. The ladies working were super nice and showed a lot of Aloha. Our food came out quickly, and our waitress was real attentive. Da Kitchen is a must for me when I am in the Kihei area. The food is excellent, the portions are big, and its all served with a lot of Aloha. read more

My husband and I really enjoyed our dinner here. The Da Kitchen bento plate and an order of veggie spring rolls was a perfect amount of food for the two of us - and the portions are very generous. Everything was flavorful and delicious. The employees were all super friendly and fun, and we enjoyed getting our food to go and eating it on the patio outside the restaurant. The guava cheesecake was really good - a nice little Costco special haha. We'd definitely come back for some yummy Hawaiian food. read more

My husband and I were starving after a long day and were really looking forward to solid Hawaiian BBQ. Unfortunately this place was overhyped and did not meet our expectations. The line was fairly long, probably because of all the hype, but the food came out quickly after we ordered. We shared one mixed plate (teriyaki chicken, teriyaki beef, chicken katsu, breaded mahi) and two spam musubis. None of the meat was particularly flavorful; we had to drench it in the sauces for it to taste good. The mac salad was just okay, nothing special. I was hopeful about the spam musubi (it's hard to mess that up in my opinion), but those lacked flavor as well :( I really hope that we just ordered the wrong thing, but I'm not likely to return as there's much better food in Maui. read more
Stopped by here for lunch today and so happy we did! It was recommended to us by a local when my friend asked for the best place to get Laulau was. We looked it up and saw that it was close by, and had also been featured on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. Of course we had to check it out. It's a super cute local spot located in the far corner of a strip mall (sorry, I forget the name of the strip mall). Look in the corners, it's near a Pho place and Papa John's. They have some indoor seating, but we opted for the outside tables instead. They had such a huge selection it was hard for me to choose. Their standard menu, plus about 20 items on the daily feature menu. I decide to stick with the standard menu since it's their specialties, but I have no doubt that everything is delicious. Obviously my friend already knew what she was there for, and I went with the teriyaki chicken plate, which came with 2 scoops of rice and the mac n potato salad. Everything was amazing! Super home style and exactly what you'd want from Hawaiian food. There were lots of locals eating there, so you know what that means! Absolutely A+!! The people were super friendly as well and happy to bring our food outside for us. I really recommend this spot to anyone that's craving a real local Hawaiian experience ! read more
Stopped in for lunch. Ordered the mixed plate which comes with teriyaki chicken, chicken katsu, breaded mahi mahi, teriyaki beef, & potato salad. Everything was really good. I like their breaded katsu. It wasn't dry. Staff were very friendly. It wasn't busy when I came in on a Friday at 11a. They serve everything in a togo box. Still recommended by the blue guidebook so we went back after 20 years. The GPS took us there but then we had a hard time finding it because it is in a corner next to another restaurant and the sign is not easily visible from the street. If you went to sit outside, you need to order takeout and eat at tables out front. I guess that saves the tip. Service was very friendly and responsive. They brought a carafe of water and glasses. They do not serve alcohol, only soft drinks, but if you want beer or wine you can buy it next door and bring it in. I wanted something very authentic and I ordered the Lau Lau platter, pork steamed in ti leaves and wrapped in taro leaves which comes with 2 balls of rice, a salad, a small container of poi and macaroni potato salad. The pork was okay and the inside ti leaves were a lot like steamed spinach. It was very authentic and I ate it but I wished I had tried some of the other menu items. My wife had the fish tempura and it was wonderful but she could only finish half. We both brought enough home for dinner the next night. In spite of my lau lau disappointment, I would go back. Two people should likely split one dinner. read more

Authentic and tasty plate lunch in the Kihei area but very strange service experience. This is a very small, hole in the wall type place situated in the back corner of a shopping center. When you walk in it feels very much like a quick to-go place but they treat it like a full on dining experience. When we walked in there was 1 party seated and a couple empty tables and we were told there would be a wait to sit down? We waited a couple minutes and then were told we could sit (?). They took our order at the table despite having someone working the counter about 5 feet away (also strange) but food was still served in to-go containers. Workers were very friendly just overall sort of confusing. Regardless, the food was good though not the best plate lunch we had while in Maui. I tried the Teriyaki Beef and thought the meat was flavorful but found the Mac salad a little lacking. A little overpriced IMO too. Wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to return here but not a bad spot for lunch if you're nearby. read more

Do they make fried saimin? I saw they had regular saimin with the soup but what about fried saimin?
I didn't see it on the menu, but they always have specials... Saimin is dine-in only.

There is some indoor seating and a couple of tables outside. Very limited. Still great food at the new Kihei location

Just went because a lot of the reviews claim many gluten free options. However, there are only two GF options - the Kalua Pork and the Laulau plate. There is no separate GF menu.

They will be closed Christmas Day and New Years Day! There's a sign on the front door.
Is there a kids menu?
Not that I'm aware, but plenty of kids go there with their parents so I'd suggest asking the servers. ALSO, the entrees are very large---plenty large to split with a child or between several children.
What are some good vegetarian dishes? Would they sub the loco loco with a veggie patty (we don't mind if the gravy isn't strictly vegetarian)?
I was there yesterday and saw more vegetarian items on the board menu. If I remember it right, I think I saw an item called "tofu poke with quinoa". So be sure to look at it! I did see that they have taro burger on the regular table menu.
