FINALLY!!! Maui's been lacking a good seafood restaurant like this! Yes, the prices are a little high, but what do you expect, it's seafood, on Maui! We went here around 5:30 pm for dinner, restaurant wasn't too crowded. Staff were very welcoming, seat yourself and they bring a menu. Menu doesn't have much in terms of prices because everything except for shrimp is market price. Market priced items are on the chalkboard. We shared the combo ($40). It comes with three choices of seafood (shrimp, clams, mussels, crawfish, or snow crab). We got shrimp, clams and crab. Combo comes with potatoes, corn, rice, sausage, and french fries. You choose the sauce (cajun, garlic butter, lemon pepper or all of the above) and the spiciness, we got medium, but to me it wasn't spicy at all. It's SUPER messy, they give you bibs and gloves and water in foam cups. We both left content, I'd definately go back :-) Service was very prompt too, every waitress came around to check on each table very frequently and they brought the check when they noticed us wrapping up our meal (this is a huge step on Maui, most places don't get the concept :-P) It's BYOB (beer and wine only) and they have some specials (tonight was prime rib, but they were all out). We are HUGE Boiling Crab fans (almost identical restaurant on the mainland we would frequent at least once a month), so we were super excited and had some high expectations to try Da Shrimp Hale, one of a kind here on Maui. We were getting to the point of hangry on a Saturday night around 6, which is probably the worst time and day anyone could not have a reservation to a new restaurant, but we decided to take our chances. Luckily there were a couple tables available, and after waiting a few short moments we were seated and ready to eat. The menu is pretty straight forward, spicy or no spicy, garlic butter only or everything (all da kine) and as long as you're down to grub with a bib and gloves (or no gloves for the hardcore shrimp peelers), you'll be well on your way to a satisfied stomach. We started with Calamari and Cajun fries - soo good! Crispy with lots of Cajun kick. I loved the chili aioli that came with, and my fiancé raved over the cocktail sauce. For the main course we were bummed they don't serve half pounds, but sucked it up and ordered 1lb shrimp 1 lb crawfish all da kine good luck (medium spicy with garlic butter, lemon pepper, and Cajun spice). Each seafood is served steaming hot in plastic bag smothered with the toppings you choose - pure mouth watering comfort food. Glad we eat got a pound each, we were so hungry and ate through both bags! This place is also BYOB, beer and wine only, a nice plus. At boiling crab, we would always get a beer with our meal and it made it us super full with the amount of food you end up consuming, so while a cold refreshing beer might have been good to have on hand, we were actually happy that we didn't have the option to order a drink this time around because we could just focus on enjoying our food. Our server, Mackenzie, was a sweetheart from the start. She was friendly, attentive, and even brought us some dessert on the house at the end of our meal - Cheesecake and a chocolate filled macaron shaped like a sea shell! I absolutely loved the little seashell macaron, I didn't see it on the menu but I hope they include them soon, it were delicious! Coming from San Jose, CA and eating at places like Boiling Crab & Kickin Crab, I had high expectations. This definitely did not disappoint. They have great options for kids and offer ELOTE as well! The sauce is good and the customer service is superb. They were busy, but the food still came out in a timely manner. This is a great concept for an island restaurant in a location like this and sets the bar for any future competition. I came here with my children so it is family friendly as well. I would most definitely recommend this for any seafood lover. read more

I really really didn't want to give 1 star! We've had several meals at this restaurant. Tonight we went for dinner before going to a movie. The A/C doesn't efficiently cool the restaurant. It was hot and uncomfortable, just like the last time we were in there which was a few months ago. We placed our order and waited, and waited. There were 7 occupied tables who had already been served their meals and two servers on. A server delivered my boyfriend's 10$ fried shrimp basket with fries and a bottle of ketchup to the table and walked away. I could see where the food pickup area is and thought the server would come right back with my meal. I ordered the grilled opakapaka for $23. I patiently waited and realized my meal isn't coming! I walked over to the counter and asked them to cancel my order. The woman behind the counter told me she could reorder my meal and I told her no need, we are going to see a movie and can't wait any longer. Not once did someone come to the table to explain what happened or why. A server did come over and ask if we wanted anything else, completely unaware that I never received my entree. It was the weirdest thing. The server brought the bill for the shrimp basket, we paid and left. read more

Ok I love to eat seafood. This place is not what I expected and those who gave this experience 4 or 5 stars must eat like birds or haven't had good seafood. Go to Paia Fish Market Southside ok in Kihei. This is not a big eaters place at all. They have an award that says locals favorite. Must be made up 'cause locals don't eat here matter of fact it was quite empty for lunch. Huge sign that I should have turned around and left but we were already here. So we tried it out. Tastes ok a bit salty though and a little bit too fried for the thin slice of catfish they gave me and three small round cut fries and 2 tiny chicken wings. The server asked was everything good? For starters, the concept is like the boiling crab restaurant on the mainland. Maui doesn't have a place like this and to bring something similar is actually a great idea! You get your food served in a plastic bag, you wear gloves, & you put on bibs to keep yourself clean while eating! Messy but fun! Not exactly a first date kind of place. Outstanding shrimp scampi. There is usually a 20 minute wait so be prepared. Very flavorful and filling.

This place has the best catfish I've ever eaten. The only drawback is the 3 things we ordered came out at least 15 minutes apart. So we ended up just sharing everything so no one had to go without food. read more

I went to Da Shrimp Hale on October 17 for dinner expecting good food. I tried to order "corn" and they could not understand what I was saying. I had to repeat it several times and they finally got it. I then shockingly overheard the waitress and cook making fun of my accent in the back. I am a first generation immigrant from China and I do not expect to be treated like that. I hope that the waitstaff and the cooks undergo some cultural sensitivity training by the management. The food was okay, right when we were done I turned around and there was a cockroach crawling on the booth I told the waitress and she simply killed it as if it were normal. I live on Maui but I was born in New Orleans and let me just tell you, this place is legit! I go back to Nola a few times a year and I would say their crawfish rank right up there with the ones I grew up eating. Apparently they source live crawfish within Hawaii which is awesome because it is illegal to ship live crawfish from the mainland. I believe they use Kauai head on shrimp too which are amazing and rival gulf shrimp which are the best in the world. We do shrimp boils at home quite often and those are the ONLY shrimp this Nola girl will use. Prices are very reasonable for exceptional seafood. I recommend the snow crab, shrimp, and crawfish. My hubby loves their Kumamoto oysters too. I like them too but am more of a gulf oyster gal ( cafe o lei Kihei and Duo in Wailea have great oysters btw) So happy to have a great spot like this close to home. It's byob so you can save a lot by picking up some drinks to bring in at Whole Foods in the same center. I wish I had pictures to show but I was too busy devouring all the goodness to take a picture. Oh yeah for the best flavor- choose the spiciest level and all 4 flavors in one , you won't regret it. It's just enough heat where you need water nearby. Shrimp Hale was one of my fiancé's favorite restaurants until tonight. Super excited to eat there and looking forward to splurging on some yummy seafood. We decided on sharing because $40 is a lot for one person. After eating there multiple times we realized what is worth it and what's not when it comes to picking your seafood. The crab is such a small amount, the mussels are ok, the clam shells pretty much fracture your teeth and get stuck in between your gums. So we decided to get all shrimp. The waitress quickly crushed those dreams and said we couldn't. My fiancé asked "Is that a new rule?" The waitress responded "No it has always been like that." My fiancé then answers with "Really? I just came here 2 weeks ago and got all shrimp." Where the waitress says "Oh." We get it if there are rules but they need to be consistent and the waitress should NOT be sassy. When I found this place I was amazed. Back in New York we have The Boil, it's basically the same. You order the seafood you want according to lbs. My boyfriend and I got the 40$ combination and were both were bloated. They gave us disposable gloves and a bib. We got shrimp, Dungeness crab, and crab legs with ALL the KINE and mild. Eating with the sticky rice was so delightful. Must try! I enjoyed watching my boyfriend peeling and while were peeling we were debating what we should do in Maui. read more

Let's just start by saying as I was reading the menu online, I already knew I was gonna be laughing when I actually place my order.. we arrived for a party of 6 at around 5:00pm on a Saturday and it was pretty busy. We waited for about 15 minutes... Heizel, our waitress was really nice and friendly. She explained the menu to us really well. When it was my time to order, I just couldn't stop laughing because the words on the menu were too kanak for me LOL! Our party ordered 3 combos. $40 for 3 choices of your choice for seafood. Since they were out of crawfish, we doubled up on shrimp and had crab legs. Prices were pricey but everything tasted so freaking darn good! Mind you, I was so tired of using my gloves, I just busted out my bare hands and peeled my shrimp like nothing, aha! Oh and I had to get an extra corn because I couldn't get enough of it. Reminded me of Hot N Juicy Crawfish in Las Vegas so I knew what to expect. My bf got the 3-combo (he loved it) while I got the Shrimps. You'll get your money's worth...huge portions. It was very good! Only downfall for me, the shrimps had its heads and eyes still attached so my bf removed it for me. Next time, I'll get the shrimp pops.
