While we were waiting, a group of Taiwanese customers entered the cafe and their conversation instantly warmed my heart. To hear Taiwanese mandarin like this was not something I had expected when I moved from SoCal to Phoenix 18 years ago. Onto the food: perfect popcorn chicken with DARK meat! Well seasoned, and not overly battered. The Gua Baos were the STARS of this visit. Soft and warm steamed bread encased perfectly braised thick pork belly slices. The addition of pickled veggies and sugared peanut powder told me the owners are DEFINITELY Taiwanese. Every bite was perfectly balanced with salty, sweety, umami flavors. The spicy wontons were good as well, although the skins seemed a little thicker than I am used to. The sauce was garlicky deliciousness. Their green milk tea was flavorful and perfect at 50% sweet, with light ice. The boba was on the larger side and probably had been sitting for a while, as they weren't as chewy they should be. Next time, will try their custard pudding add-on! I'm so happy to have stumbled upon a gathering place for Taiwanese nationals in Phoenix!
