Hmm, maybe it was an off day? I had heard such great reviews of this place and my experience did not match. The staff was friendly but when the 2nd person (food server) came in from outside he immediately went to the cutting board to prepare my food. I didn't see him wash his hands and, in these times, that was concerning. Now for the food ... for $100 I wanted more flavor. The prices in store do not reflect the prices on their online menu. Full Slab of Ribs - very smoky flavor, but meat was tough and did not fall off the bone. Pass. 1lb Brisket - soft, fatty, delicious chunks of meat. 1lb Pulled pork - good flavor, lots of fat/skin so texture was off Pint of Greens - no thank you. Maybe because it was early (11:10a) but the greens were hard and had no flavor. Even the ham pieces seemed flavorless Pint of Baked Beans - on point and big pieces of meat. Great flavor. I'd give this place 5 stars but they double charged me. When I called to dispute the charge they blamed my bank. The food however is the best food I've bought out of a gas station. So, I was really unlucky in 2019, I kept trying to eat here and found them closed several times. But I am happy to report that they are open regular hours. The Barbeque meat is delicious, I have eaten Brisket and Pork Ribs. Tender, juicy, fresh and incredibly good. Their sides are not so great, I considered only 4 stars. Today I broke away from the Brisket Sandwich and took on the Shermanator with pulled pork and hot links topped with their cole slaw. Pulled pork infused beans was my side. It was amazing, the pork was tender and the sauce is perfect with sweet tones. I'm not usually a guy that orders really hot stuff, so the hot link was a step outside my comfort zone, and while it was definitely hot, it was manageable and didn't cause pain, just a runny nose. This was our year of the brisket comparing one delicious morsel to another in dozens of places as we traveled the USA. So, when I discovered Daddy Ds on the internet, we wasted no time checking it out and ordering brisket, of course. Some said they were turned off by the location in a Shell station. Not me. I thought that was a great change. I really wanted to like it especially after reading a little about the history and the reviews. However, the brisket is definitely not spot-on for a southern barbecue. The brisket is served like bbq pork is served in the Carolinas not like brisket is served Texas (or even Louisiana) . The brisket was also served smothered in barbecue sauce. That's not how it's done either. This is brisket not pork. We did ask to take the brisket back and serve it sliced. From pictures I'd seen posted, I knew they had done that before. And, they did just that. The smoker is outside and that's where the meat is smoked. However, we noticed that three crockpots sat on the counter. Please tell me that brisket isn't smoked and then put in a crockpot. However, that's actually what we thought. There was very little flavor in our brisket even though others have said theirs did have. Plus there was no bark on our brisket. Good brisket always has bark. It's nearly impossible to smoke a brisket without some bark. The rest of the meal --- The ribs were wonderful. That was the best part of the whole meal. They were smokey and the meat slid right off the bone. The beans were just from a can -- gold old pork and beans. Sounds like others received different beans. Potato salad tasted like deli potato salad from the local grocer. However, with all that said, the people inside were very friendly and nice. It's just that they need to raise the bar and improve the sides. However, they choose to serve the meat is what will draw their crowd. For us, it's not the brisket the south is known for. read more

Excellent Southern Style BBQ. The owner was handed down the families secret BBQ sauce recipe from Louisiana and this is the real deal. Very down home hospitality. It's located inside a shell gas station. Came here because of the 4.5 star reviews on yelp. It did not disappoint. St Louis style ribs are KILLER!! I was only in town for a couple days and had to try it. When I'm back in town, this will be my first stop. The owner talked to my sister and I the whole time just like we were family. We were sitting at the counter eating. Now if they would just get out of the gas station and into their own building they would grow the business like no other. 6 years is kind of a long time not to grab your own location. Man, it looks like I'm in the minority on this one. Sadly this was only like 2.5 stars for me. The chopped brisket was not that flavorful and I had to add a lot of salt and pepper to give it flavor and then had to add sauce on top of that to give it some taste. In general, I like my brisket to be tasty enough, flavorful enough, and tender and juicy enough to eat plain or with sauce. I usually eat half of my brisket plain and half dipping it in sauce. I also prefer sliced brisket in general. We drove out of our way to come here. The portions are large. It is literally in a gas station. The prices are pretty good for the amount of food you get. That being said, I would not go back. I feel like they probably use liquid smoke in their recipe for the brisket or the sauce. From the looks of it, they definitely smoke their brisket, but after eating, I kept burping liquid smoke, at least that is what it seemed like. I've had that reaction before at another bbq place (I forget where) and it is unpleasant. All I got was the brisket, so that is all I'm going to review. A few days later I went to Matt's and had EXCELLENT brisket and I would recommend going there instead of here. I'm not trying to throw shade on this place and it looks like plenty of people like going here, so I don't think it will be an issue. I was on the fence between here and Matt' s after reading lots of reviews, and looking at a few different websites for top 10 bbq places in Portland. I wish I had read a review that steered me towards Matt's over Daddy D's. It would have saved me a trip that took me out of my way and I would have been happier with what I got. read more
