Dad's Original Scotch Oatmeal Cookies, originating from Scotland in 1900, came to California. Dad's Cookie Company soon embraced franchising, becoming a pioneer in the industry by 1927. During a visit to St. Louis in the same year, a salesman introduced Carpenter's Ice Cream in St. Louis to the flavor of the Scotch Oatmeal Cookie, leading to Mr. Carpenter obtaining the St. Louis franchise. Just received the seasonal Peanut Butter Chocolate Dipped. I thought the oatmeal had the best texture. These are even better, and thicker, and crunchier, and yet light and crispy. Nutshell: perfectly crunchy, classic flavors, would highly recommend regular stops for cookies. Popped in on a Saturday with my grandpa. I had no idea this little gem of a cookie shop existed in south city! The shop really feels like a step back in time with the old wood, counter s, and display cases. I believe one of their cookies would suit everyone. Everything is sold by the pound. We got a half pound each of the original oatmeal, coconut melties, and double chocolate. Dad's Cookie Company been run by the same family in the same Dutchtown building since the 1920's (though it did not actually originate there), and the building was actually built by the family as a bakery in 1912. Dad's is a classic. If you've lived in STL and haven't tried them, they're a staple for sure. Their storefront is a cute, old school and pretty unassuming. Inside, you get the same vibe, but it's a part of the experience. Their cookies get made fresh daily and once cooked, put in large bins. They always have an assortment, but the past couple times I've visited, they've been out of their more popular ones. No visit to St Louis is complete without a visit to Dad's Cookie Company. There is nothing like being there and watching the "action". The cookies are in aluminum trash cans. When you place your order, the ladies expertly stack your cookies in a paper bag and tie it with cotton twine as they weigh it. They even sell the broken pieces at a reduced rate. No evening hours or Sunday so plan accordingly. We have family in St Louis so we used to visit quite often. It's been three years. Three years too long. My husband is in town right now. We bought a bag of them, ate one in the car, and my husband went back in to buy more We also bought the chocolate chip and the peanut butter chocolate chip--peanut butter is better than the plain chocolate chip. These cookies are old fashioned crispy cookies not soft bakery style. A softer texture would ruin the cookies, but if you don't know they're crunchy and you're expecting soft, you'll be sad. I just wanted to post this to show you the joy you bring to those that get to try your cookies. My dad talked about sneaking down to your store as a child. He will be 80 this year. He's also dying from issues with his lungs. I don't live in St. Louis anymore but I try to visit often. I thought I would give him a pick me up and stopped by your store. I asked him not to tell my dad I was on the way. Sadly, I couldn't see my dad like I wanted to because he and his wife were being quarantined due to Covid. So, I stood outside the door and dropped the cookies between the doors and waited. When he saw the cookies, he lit up like a child at the best birthday party ever! We exchanged laughs and I left to pack up and go back home. 5 minutes later after his wife text, joking about him being selfish and only giving her one out of the 25 and how the marriage vows where being broken, he told me for the first time as an adult, "I Love You" as he was feeling really really down and that made his day! I went against the name and was distracted by a cart of popcorn when I first walked in. This was my first trip to Dad's and I hope to return soon, but I ate the popcorn I got so fast I'm afraid to go back!!! Whoever was smart enough to mix cheddar popcorn and caramel in the same mouthful was a genius. I appreciated the lack of kernels you get at the bottom of a bag of popcorn... I am new to Dad's Cookie Company, and my first visit was just before Father's Day. I got my Dad some cookies and a mug, as they make their mugs a little bigger in order to accommodate the dunking of cookies into them. There are eight varieties of cookies here, and due to my sweet tooth I had to try one of each. I must say, these are some excellent cookies, and I am not ashamed at all that it took less than an hour to eat eight of them. There, I said it. I can't really recommend one over the other, as they are all very good and it more depends on what flavor you like best. You won't go wrong no matter what you order. I will say that these are not soft cookies, as they seem to be made more for dunking, and therefore have a more dense consistency. Still, they aren't hard or anything. The store is a bit magical, as there are huge vats of cookies, old time scales and sweet little old ladies. I think walking in is really what did it for me simply because there are few places that will transport you back in time like Dad's Cookie Company does. You have to make your purchases by the full pound or gift box, so don't expect to go there and buy one or two cookies. But no worries, they're dirt cheap and it won't hurt your pocket book any. read more

One of the best finds in St.Louis. Dad's is an institution. I know you can find many of the tasty varieties of Dad's cookies at local stores, but you really need to visit the location on Louisiana. You need to take a few steps back in time and get a few measures of the cookies in brown paper to enjoy. In addition, if you call ahead you can get a full Dad's glass jar filled with cookies when you arrive. All of Dad's varieties are amazing, but please get the original Scotch oatmeal. This place reminds me of what the shops must have looked like in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. The building is old and a bit musty, sweet little old ladies that have probably worked there for decades dote on you while you shop for cookies, there are BINS upon BINS of cookies everywhere...I swear...it's a child's heaven...apart from the old musty building smell that is. I will admit, I have never really been one for the gooey softness of most cookies. I like my cookies to have a little crunch and leave trails of crumbs down my shirt. That is exactly what a Dad's Cookie does. They are huge and chunky and crunchy as can be. I know most people dunk them, and that's probably the purpose of the crunch...but I just gnaw on them as is. No milk necessary. I think they have eight or so different types of cookies at Dad's...my favorite is the peanut butter, but I have yet to turn down a Scotch Oatmeal if it's handed to me. I have tried them all but they have a coconut one that I have steered clear of for years (allergies, hives...no cookie is worth THAT!) Dad's Cookies are definitely a South City gem. read more

While I do not visit here frequently this is a great place for a trip down memory lane. All the cookies are made in house and stored in old wood barrels. You order by the pound and the scale is a balance that still uses old iron weights to do it. Oh man, I love Dad's cookies. Whose dad? I do not know but that is the name of the place, Dad's Cookie Company. There they make some of the best oatmeal cookies. The place prides itself on them in fact and I do not blame them for it at all. The cookies are nice and scrumptious, not too crunchy and not too soft to the point where they will just fall apart in your hand. Of course the best time to eat them is fresh, but that really does not matter when it comes to Dad's Cookies, oh no, they can be eaten at anytime, best with milk for dunking.
