One time we ordered the biscuits and gravy, and Dagwood sandwich, the other time we ordered the country fried steak with a breakfast burrito. All the food was delicious! Biscuits and gravy were flavorful and plentiful. The Dagwood sandwich was loaded and probably was the favorite. The country fired steak was good and plenty of food. My husband grew up on the "hill" down aways from this restaurant and we finally made it here. I came for the open faced hot beef sandwich and husband had the chicken fried steak. Lots of workers from local businesses use this as their lunch spot. Service was quick and efficient. Staff were friendly. It was a throw back to the kind of restaurants we used to go to when I was growing up. Food was solid. Husband liked the green beans because they had bacon in them like his mother made. read more

Brunchin n' Lunchin - Dagwood's Cafe It took me long enough! Those 5 words have never been more true regarding this adorable, quaint diner almost hidden on one end of southwest boulevard. I had passed Dagwood's Cafe time and time again but had never, until a recent Sunday, ventured inside the restaurant. Inside the tiny space...and I do mean TINY, one step down and you come face to face with a classic diner style counter and on the opposite wall there are a few booths. My breakfast partner and I slid into an empty booth early Sunday morning and man were we HUNGRY, it could or could not be because of extracurricular activities from the evening before, but after reading the menu we knew we had come to the right place. My eyes flickered over corned beef hash, a bevy of breakfast sandwiches, homemade biscuits and gravy and all the classic diner options including 2 eggs anyway you like. Instantly I had decided upon a decadent sounding, and definitely high in the carb department, Irish Dagwood sandwich, which who would have thought, my breakfast date also set his sights on. We also just had to split a half order of the biscuits and gravy, which did not disappoint us at all, and added to our carb dense meal (just what the doctor ordered for nursing a hangover). When the sandwiches arrived the marble rye bread was glistening with butter from the flat top and the fatty melt in your mouth corned beef hash was piled high and a blanket of succulent swiss cheese was peeking out the side needless to say this was the prescription the doctor order. The hash browns were also crisped nicely, no small feat. By the time I have dove into my sandwich I almost forgot the mound of biscuits and gravy placed in between us but, no man was left behind and the slightly doughy biscuits and savory salty white sausage gravy was the perfect ending to a delicious meal. Since I had a 12 hour train ride from Kansas City to Chicago ahead of me, my friends who were hosting me took me to get breakfast at this quaint little diner off the main drag. When I first came into the place, the girl behind the counter looked the spitting image of one of the receptionists at my work. It was a bit unsettling, especially since she's also from the Midwest. Anyway, I ordered a two egg breakfast with a waffle and hash browns. Most everything was very good. The waffle was light and fluffy, though I didn't particularly care for the butter on top. My friend's wife ordered a half ham steak, and they weren't kidding about the notable size of that piece of meat. Who could even finish a full size ham steak like that in one sitting?
