They have quite a large menu and I've tried both the Pastrami Deli and the Turkey Breast Dagwood. The biscuit is a mediocre resemblance of what a breakfast sandwich should look like, if you're desperate, spend a little extra and go with the croissant. For those that don't know about Dagwood's, they should certainly check it out if they like hot sandwiches with bulk chips. It's a no-frills, reasonably priced quality lunch (and breakfast) option in the skyway that also serves Italian (pastas) and the service is good and pretty fast for the lunch crowd. I was first introduced to Dagwood's several years ago (not going to date myself) but it's tucked away in the skyway in the Crossings building near Washington Avenue. Not a bad walk during the summer time but at least on a cold day you can still get there without freezing. There are a number of toasted (hot) sandwich options including the Dagwood Special, which has pastrami, ham, and salami topped with cheese, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, mayo and the special (Italian) dressing. The menu also has turkey, veggie, roast beef, tuna and ham and all sandwiches come with (bulk) potato chips or a side salad. For $6.99 (pretax), the price is right and it's worth the walk, plus you get to burn off half of the calories on your walk back to work. I haven't tried the pastas or hot Italian sandwiches - one day soon if I need to carb load. Dagwood's also serves inexpensive breakfast sammies - nothing special but again for about $3, it's hard to beat downtown. read more

Just back in town for a day and had to run over to my favorite Mpls sandwich shop. Best in town and best kept secret in town. I think the location keeps the crowds away, but that is very much in your favor as a savvy sandwich hunter (here's a tip, if you don't want to navigate that crazy skyway system, just go to the food court second floor of the "Crossings" building on 2nd). I was just in Miami and tried as many of the famous cubanos and medianoches as I could find around Little Havana (in my unrestrained hedonism I took no notes and will leave no reviews - it was pure sandwich gestalt therapy), I want to put forward a theory that the Dagwood's Special is like Minneapolis' own Cuban...wait, wait, wait...hear me out...Ok? As with that legendary sandwich, bread and cheese are perfectly toasted and the meats receive just a little oven heat to activate all the yummy flavor components. No mustard or pickles, but the dressing is perfectly consistently slathered in good proportion throughout. Iceberg lettuce (shredded) and tomato are as Minnesota a combination as there exists under the sun, both lend a good crunch but also become a single glorious layer of goodness as they fuse with the tangy dressing and are held in by the bread. Meats are high quality and generous - maybe even a little too generous for your waistline. Ok Ok, not a perfect analogy, perhaps, but Minneapolis should be proud to have this simple but awesome hometown original as its welterweight champion to send into the ring. For best results, get the sandwich for here (eat in), so you can get it fresh and hot and enjoy the posthumous chips covered with drippings of dressing. One last thing to note - I've been eating here since the mid-2000s and this sandwich has also been steadily getting better and better over the last ten years as the owners have started making their bread in-house and expanding their menu - so take older reviews with a grain of salt. read more

This place is in a really oddball part of the skyway. I've eaten here a few times, and I haven't been back much because the sandwiches are really tiny. They definitely don't do justice to their namesake sandwiches, which are like two feet tall. The real problem here is that the food is overpriced. I recently tried them again and the sandwich is tasty: toasted bun, nice amount of fixings, oil and mayo type deal. I'm not sure if there really is any secret sauce. I got the turkey dagwood and a medium soda and my total was $8.90. Really, Dagwood's? The chips they throw in there are of a standard variety and probably only cost them a few pennies per order. The sandwich was good, but it's too small to be very filling. If I'm going to blow $7+ on a sandwich, I want it to fill me up for real. I really want to like this place, but I'm afraid I will go on being offended by their prices. They also have the audacity to place a tip jar on the counter, which is another slap in the face. You could easily make these sandwiches at home if you were so inspired. The sammies here are good, but they nickel and dime you big time. read more

What I liked about my Dagwoods special was they it seemed to be really stuffed with 3 different style deli meats and having a lot of lettuce to go with it. HOLY SMOKIES. This place is good. I don't know how I had worked in a building connected to the skyway 2 blocks down from Dagwoods for 7 MONTHS before visiting this place. My manager finally convinced me to try a sub and boy I could just kiss him! Although I probably shouldn't because A.) He doesn't swing that way and B.) The whole HR thing. Womp whaaaa! I tried the Dagwoods Special sub and let me tell you - HEAVEN! If you've ever had a hot assorted hoagie from Davannis (my fav) then you HAVE to get this - - the flavor profile is nearly identical but it's even better with the melted cheese and just an ever so slightly toasted and fluffy hoagie bun. SO good. Don't substitute anything - get it exactly how it comes or don't get it at all! I think the whole sub with the potato chips it comes with set me back about $7.74 out the door but man, I would pay that every day. YUM. You can also substitute the potato chips for a side salad (no add'l charge) but I would stick with the chips unless you know, you're one of those people. The salad is alright but nothing special: iceberg lettuce, diced tomatoes, shredded white cheese, thinly slice white onion, and a vinaigrette. Also, make sure you give yourself time to eat your sandwich immediately. You want this baby when it's warm and still perfectly toasty- - don't let it get cold or you'll be a little sad. And you'll lose that delicate toast. Update: I tried their breakfast sandwiches. I TRIED THEIR BREAKFAST SANDWICHES. So cheap. Much good. $3.00 for an egg/cheese croissant sandwich (bacon, ham, or sausage) $2.50 for an egg/cheese bagel sandwich (bacon, ham, or sausage) The bacon egg and cheese croissant was DELICIOUS and big. Best sandwiches in the Twin Cities. Seriously. Been visiting this place for over 20 years. My visits have been less frequent since I don't make it downtown too often anymore, but I still make sure I visit when downtown. When I worked downtown I ate at Dagwood's at least once week, almost without fail. I love pretty much everything about these sandwiches. Even the chips. First, the sandwiches are made with a tasty combination of bread, meat, cheese, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, mayonaise, and oil. I've had the ham, turkey, roast beef, the special, ... I've probably had them all. I don't think the tuna works as well as the other options, but my daughter likes the tuna so that means something. The cheese is melted on the meat and served on a toasted roll. Everything comes together so nicely that it is hard to single out any one aspect that makes the sandwich superior to other sandwiches I have tasted. To be fully appreciated, one must understand the ritual of eating a Dagwood. The sandwich is served alongside a pile of ridged chips, which are integral to the enjoyment of the sandwich. The veteran sandwich patron spreads the chips out into a bed on the plate (or in the container) and hunches over the chips while eating the sandwich. This allows the oil and mayonaise mixture to drip on the chips from the sandwich while eating. The ridged chips seem to catch the goodness and when a layer of chips has been seasoned sufficiently, they should be eaten so that another layer can be blessed with more sandwich drippings. Dagwood's seems to have figured out the right proportion of chips to sandwich; I always end up with only a couple chips remaining once I am done with the sandwich. The symmetry of sandwich vs. chips is almost spiritual for me. Dagwood's also serves salads. They have salads that correspond with their sandwiches in terms of toppings (ham, turkey, tuna, etc.). I went through a salad phase for a while, but I look back on those days with regret. I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with the salads, but the sandwiches are so good that I can't believe I allowed myself to avoid them when I had a chance. Finally, Dagwood's takes great care to make sure that they deliver a quality hand-mixed cherry coke experience. There was a time years ago when they took cherry coke off the menu becasuse Pepsi had stopped distributing the Wild Cherry syrup that they used. Cherry cokes did not return to the menu until they were able to secure a reliable supply again. It was worth the wait. This place is open for only a short time during the day Monday-Friday to serve the lunchtime crowd. There is often a line, but it is well worth the wait. read more

Went there for pasta. The chicken alfredo was very filling and very good (nice combo of broccoli, slivered carrots, and chunks of white chicken with noodles and alfredo sauce). Also served with the meal are two large slices of bread with butter pads. I ate all of the pasta, and one piece of bread, but next time I'll get it to go so I don't think I have to finish the entire serving! (Yes, I grew up in a household where I had to eat everything on my plate.) The staff is very courteous and friendly. I have eaten here several times as I work nearby and the line is usually shorter than the other restaurants in the food court. Turns out there's a reason for that. The sandwiches are okay, nothing to write home about, but the price for them is far higher than they are worth. You will get a much better sandwich across the hall at the deli for the same price. Don't even bother with the Italian menu. Their garlic cheese bread was barely toasted and dry. If they can't even toast bread, they can't cook pasta properly. Additionally, they claim that they deliver, but they won't. I called up to see if they would deliver a breakfast order for me and a couple team mates. The lady who answered hesitated when I asked for delivery. Wanted to know where and how many orders. I guess 3 people in a building next door wasn't a good enough order for them to deliver. I've been coming here for 20 years and it's still my favorite sandwich place in downtown Minneapolis. It's been owned by the same folks and they continue to make 'em exactly the same way. Everything made to order. Yummy hoagie rolls warmed up and cheese melted under the broiler combined with the shredded lettuce, tomato, onion, a pile o' meat and special sauce. Yummmm. And a big heapin' helping of Old Dutch chips (the ones with the narrow ridges that only come by the bag). I can't go more than a few weeks without getting one. The best! read more

My favorite spot for a salad or a sandwich. The salads aren't anything fancy but the dressing is to die for. This is usually my go to item but occasionally I will get a Turkey Dagwood Sandwich which just melts in my mouth. The cheese, mayo, and house dressing make a fabulous combination! I stopped in for lunch, based on what a co-worker had said. Ordering was easy, and service was friendly. I ordered the Dagwood Special. When I got my tray of sandwhich, chips, and pop - I thought the sandwhich was very small. I have a sandwhich test, if I pick up a sandwhich, and it DRIPS juice or sauce - I know I am probably going to enjoy it....and this was no exception. What can I say? Sometimes in life, what you really want is a soft sandwich. I am talking about pillowy bread that gives way to iceberg lettuce and mayonnaise and some kind of cold cut. If that sounds lame to you, then well... you have never experienced a yummy soft sandwich. Sometimes, all that toasting and the rustic bread and the weird toppings can get to be a little much (not to mention that the roof of my mouth just wants some relief from tiny, sharp bread shards). A lot of people in my office are huge fans of Dagwoods and considering that yesterday was a balmy -40, I thought today is for sure a soft sandwich kind of day. We have a system worked out where we order and then one of us drives and the other hops out to get the sandwich so no one has to park (very Bonnie and Clyde... not really, but you get the point). I got the roast beef sandwich. The sandwich was exactly what I wanted. It was a no frills, yummy soft sandwich. No interesting ingredients here. We are talking about shredded iceberg lettuce, tomato, mayo, roast beef and their special house dressing - that's about it. Which was just fine with me. The sandwich also comes with a generous helping of super salty chips. And if you are in the know, you know the best thing to do is to put a healthy scoop of those chips IN your sandwich for maximum carnage. Overall, I would happily go back! My only small complaint is that after eating Clancys roast beef, I really don't think there is anywhere that could come close to that quality? But, aside from that, the sandwich was really good! I agree with the previous comment. This is not an original Dagwood sandwich, but it used to be long ago when they first opened. Slowly the sandwich started getting smaller and smaller and the prices getting higher and higher. The food is good, but I can get more for my money downtown at lunch time at a number of places. read more
