I'm new to the area and I don't know what's in season here yet so I called ahead to ask if they carried a certain item. They said yes, I asked if it was in stock they said yes. I arrived at the store and found they do indeed carry the item but this is not the season and they do not have it in stock. The clerk that helped me gave me a lecture on why it wasn't in season but then at the end finally apologized for me getting wrong information. The check out clerk asked if I found everything I needed (as I had purchased another item) and when I said no and I had called ahead and asked if it was in stock and it been told yes she said "that's the way it goes". Really? Come on, if you're going to train your staff to ask meaningless questions at least train them to appear like they care about the answer. They are also infestations of aphids on many of the plants in the nursery as well as mealybugs on the succulents. I came back to buy some violas as they seem pretty insect free, but do be sure to check any plants you buy here or you may bring home some unexpected guests. read more

Exceptional service. Reasonable prices. Pretty good on-hand selection. To me, that defined Dale's. However, I had an experience that will make me a customer for life. I had purchased a lot of merchandise, small and large, over the last several years when I had a remodel done on my home. However, what made me a loyal customer -- and why am I taking the time to write now? Ernie, a manager in the Plumbing Department, called a company that he has referred clients to in the past. Ronson Shower Glass & Mirror in Hayward. Ernie called them on August 14 and explained that Dales no longer carried a shower latch part for a 50 year old shower. However, much to my astonishment, Ronson had one on hand. They offered to hold it for me. I asked if they could charge me for the part and ship it to my home. No, they said, they would mail it. Sure enough, I have the brand new shower latch 2 days later -- and at NO cost. What an impressive hardware store. It's not a behemoth like HD or Lowe's. Rather, it reminds me of OSH which I prefer. It has more of a neighborhood feel. Came here one time about two months ago. Had to make a copy of a key. The staff was really nice. The whole store was neat. Checked out the nursery and the worker there was also really nice. He made sure to say hi to us. Felt small compared to Home Depot. It was pretty empty; not a lot of people there. Very relaxing and quiet. After shopping here since 1988 and always having great customer service and having the help that I need to find what I want, today I had the worst experience in the paint section. The woman was just horrible did not care that I had been waiting and waiting and did not try to get anyone else to come to the counter to help me and I had very little time because I'm working while I'm out shopping so I can't wait and wait and wait and that's what they made me do and I'll just go to Home Depot now. Came here to get a key made but ended up standing at the booth for 30min asking for multiple assistance. They kept paging for someone but no one ever showed up. Asked them to page a manager and no one showed up. So we called the customer service line via our cell phone to get transferred to a manager. Then the manager finally arrived within 2min, but he didn't know how to make a key either. Smh. Waited for him to call someone AND THEN someone finally arrived to make a key. Terrible. read more

My not-so-secret nursery crush. It's out of the way but if I'm in the area I like to swing by because they always have unique types of veggies and herbs I can never find anywhere else! Picked up a Brazilian Bode pepper, holy basil, culantro, and a sesame plant today! They also had some cool looking tomato varieties but I don't have any room for more tomatoes in the garden right now. I've been a customer of Dale's Hardware for two years. They are, simply put, the best. Case in point: I bought a grill at Ace online and picked it up today from Dale's with a bunch of gear. The guy who helped me got everything finalized, filled up the propane tanks, and then we managed to fit the giant grill into my Yaris by breaking down the box and loading everything in pieces. Then he recycled the box. All of this on Black Friday, by the way. I haven't encountered so much unfriendly, un accommodating, zero customer relation/ interaction before in this place considered as one of my favorites to shop for quality plants. Your staff Keith was very hostile with threatening remarks about Vivianne who with Ryan are the only ones who were very respectful, professional, and very accommodating to customers regardless of race. This place puts Home Depot to shame! Like seriously. Home Depot has been a constant disappointment with their slow & lousy customer service. If you ask them where something is, they just tell you that it's at whichever aisle or over yonder somewhere. Also, a piece of our blind railing support broke recently so we went to Home Depot to get a replacement. They told us to buy it online without telling us what this specific thing is called. We're not professionals so of course we ordered the wrong effin thing. So dumb. My dad complained & then one of the employees suggested that we can find the item at Dale's. We went to Dale, and right off the bat--I can tell it's a nicer looking store. The decor of the place outside & in seems more in order & decorated especially for the holidays! We asked an employee about some items that we were looking for & he walked us to each individual items in the different aisles. Plus, he was pretty informative with which one we should get. Very bad experience on returning an item one of my employee purchase. Since I was there purchasing. I tried to return item we did not use. since I did not have the a receipt and it's not on my credit card they cannot return it. The lady that normally see's me there and the pro account service was willing to make an exception, but not the lady in the front desk. not even a store credit I keep trying to explain to them that I own the company and we have different credit card that we use. They did not want to return the item they would rather lose my business. Her response was " that's too bad!" which I've been coming to them for the last 16 years since opening my business. Too bad!!! Benchmark for customer service. Are their prices a little bit more than some of their competitors ??? Yeah a little bit but they run promos and such. It starts when you walk into this store and if you're perusing any of the aisles the customer service here is just un-matched. I try to be stingy with my 5 stars but this place is hard to beat when it comes to customer service. If you like my reviews, consider "following" my profile for reviews all across the SF Bay Area . Why "follow" someone? It causes the person you follow's reviews to tier to top when you pull up a business. I find this very handy when researching venues. Rod's Review grading scale explained. Feeling frustrated with the rewards program! Im a frequent Customer and I appreciate the occasional rewards that they send me in the mail. What's frustrating is you can't use the rewards towards sell items, the rewards can only be used during a certain timeframe, and there's a minimum purchase amount required to redeem the rewards. Well I finally met all those criteria today only to hear "sorry you can't use your rewards, it was redeemed last week. BS, I never used it and the cashier just said sorry! I've been to Dale Hardware in Fremont a few times. It's recently got a makeover, making it look alot nicer and they even extended the Garden Center, so they now have an outside Garden Center. Every time I go to Dale, I get great service from all the workers, which you don't always get at Home Depot or Lowe's. Found something at the Garden Center, which actually happened to be on Clearance and was wondering if they had anymore around the store and Nicholas was very helpful assisting me and finding more of that item I was looking for. He was extremely helpful, and gave great attentive customer service. Which is something I always look for while out shopping at various different stores, gotta have good service. The inside is very nice and clean, neatly organized making shopping and finding everything here at Dale easy to find. Be sure to check your mailbox from time to time, because they do send Coupons out for you to save some money while shopping here at Dale. Nice new clean shopping carts as well, unlike many other stores haha. Parking is fine too, plenty of parking spots. No problem there. I'll go out of my way to shop here, as I got misled at another hardware store. This paint by ace company is the worst. I have used three cans of paint on three sanded and primed cabinet doors . This paint looks like it has a 1/3 of can filled with clear coating and no pigment. All three cans and I still can't cover. Your store is awesome otherwise . Just really disappointed in brand. 20.00 dollars wasted and I still need more paint read more

I just moved to Fremont from the East Coast, and this is the best thing I found in California so far. We moved into a new house, and we need a local hardware store I can pop too quickly, so I have been to Dales at least five times so far. With each experience I've had at Dales it is hard to imagine I will ever go back to a big box store again. Each visit to the store I have been greated promptly and courteously by a man or woman that knows the store and the products. Most recently, I gave a young man my list of things I needed he actually took me around the store to help me pick each one out. Considering I have been to big box stores where the staff will run away from you if you look like you have a question, this has been a refreshing change. Keep it up. It is a level of service that will keep me local rather than go to Amazon or elsewhere. read more

Do I mind paying a lil more here than at the big home stores? NO! And I'm crazy cheap!!! Even though the store is smaller than most home improvement stores, Dale seems to have a better selection of stuff, and they definitely have the stuff that I can't find elsewhere. Having been to many hardware stores, I was confused when all the employees wanted to help me and were actually helpful and knowledgeable about their department. I came in looking for some screws. I knew the length, but didn't know the thread size. A gentleman helped get every option possible for me. I came back a couple days later to return the ones that didn't fit, and it was a quick and easy process. I wish it was closer to where I lived. I was today years old when I found out about Dale Hardware and I have lived in the Bay Area my whole life! I was looking for a very old style Price Pfister shower handle. I tried Home Depot and Lowe's and could not find anything that would work. When I walked into the store, all the employees acknowledge you and when I went to the aisle of shower handles I was helped promptly. I told the person what I was looking for and who makes it and he pulled the product off the shelf and said "this is it". It was like he knew what I was looking for before I even knew it myself. The store layout is nicely well done, and very clean (including the parking lot). Finding these type of businesses are very few and far between. Keep up the good work. read more

Still a 5 star store. Just called to get info on some chandelier light bulbs for a Turkish lamp I bought. Unfortunately, I bought the wrong tone/shade/brightness of bulbs yesterday.. they were a cold white and waaaaay too bright. So, I asked for the electrical/lighting department and Blaine helped me determine the ones that I had were waaay too cold and he put the warm ones on hold for me so I can go in and pick then up tonight. Talk about someone who knows his product..and was willing to explain to me the differences! I appreciate this so much because I have zero knowledge when it comes to this stuff!!!
