Crispy Fried Chicken Wings with Fried Rice
    Alex G.

Really delicious meal, but be careful about the spice level you ask for. I usually have a high spice tolerance, and I have never found anything "too spicy", so coming here, when they asked for the spice level that I wanted, I was too cocky. They gave me the options from 1-10, or an 11 if I really wanted it spicy. I chose to get an 11 for my crispy Fried chicken wings, and it was way way too spicy. The chicken was covered in chili seeds. It was delicious, but after two wings, it was a very painful kind of delicious.

This is such an awesome spot! Tasty, affordable food with outstanding service... what is there not to like? I had trouble deciding what to eat this Saturday when I came across Daleng in my bookmarks. It was a bit out of the way, but I'm glad we made the trek. The food was delicious! The crispy pork spring rolls were indeed very crispy. The filling was pretty standard and reminiscent of egg rolls (not Vietnamese style as in the menu description), but the whoever wrapped these should get an award for creating the most tightly wrapped and perfectly cylindrical spring rolls out there. They are fried so evenly that the the level of crispiness is uniform throughout the entire roll. They were good with the sweet and spicy sauce provided. The entrees were also very good. Michael F and I shared the Daleng Fried Shrimp and the Eggplant & Veggie Curry. Both items came with a generous portion of rice. The fried shrimp (10 pieces) was very crispy, while the curry had a decent amount of veggies immersed in a flavorful coconut curry sauce, which went well with the rice. To complement our meal, we got Thai milk tea and Hong Kong milk tea (with tapioca balls). Both were good. Curious, I also got a can of sugar cane drink; it tastes like sugar syrup and water, but was cool to try. They also have other Asian drinks in their cooler, such as chrysanthemum tea (which I recommend!). All of the entrees are under $10. Definitely adding this to my list of regular restaurants!

Daleng has been on our list for a while, and after our first visit I'm pretty upset at ourselves for taking so long to check it out because it was so delicious! We started off with the crispy fried veggie rolls which were freshly fried and delicious (which is why there are no photos, we inhaled it). I opted for the Tang Tang chicken which was both sweet and spicy, and you can adjust the spice level custom from a level 1 through 10. The wings were fried perfectly crispy, hot tender juicy meat on the inside and served with rice . Although I enjoyed this dish, I probably will personally not order it again only due to personal preference. I usually consider wings more like a snack/appetizer versus a meal - but I do recommend the dish, it's delicious! My partner got the cambodian stir fry, and you can substitute any protein. The dish is so savory, packed with flavor, keeping you back for more - he and I both wiped the plate clean. One thing we both appreciated a lot about the menu, is the versatility of being able to swap out proteins, especially for us vegetarians or flexitarians - this is one of those restaurants where we are so happy, because we can eat almost 80% of the menu, instead of the usual 1 or 2 things off the menu. We can't wait to come back, there were so many dishes we wanted to try - it was hard to choose! That's a good problem to have There are only a few minor constructive criticisms that led to me knocking down 1 star. One is that they were unfortunately out of boba when I ordered, not a huge deal but just something to mention. The second is that they use single use plastic forks, knives, utensils etc at the restaurant which generates so much waste. I understand not all businesses are able to do so, but I would love to see some green initiatives. Outside of that, I can't wait to come back and eat some more! I might honestly bring my own utensils as long as they don't mind...

Pad Thai, Thai Tom Yum Fried Rice, Thai Tom Yum Stir-fry

Open during COVID-19! I was craving Thai food and wanted to try out a new restaurant. Daleng did not disappoint. I order the Pad Thai, Tom Yum fried rice, and Tom Yum stir fry. I got the Pad Thai with level 3 spice and it was so spicy! I am generally able to handle spicy foods, but this was on the edge of too spicy. Just beware when asking for the dishes to be spicy! The Tom Yum fried rice had good flavor, but could use more of that fried oniony taste. And the the Tom Yum chicken stir fry was tasty and went well with the rice. Both of those dishes weren't spicy although it was noted as spicy on the menu. Next time I'm craving Thai, I will be back!

Ordered for take out and went to pick it up. When I walked in, the most obvious thing was that the portions are way bigger if you eat in. The food on the menu is from multiple areas in Asia, and I loved being able to dip my banh mi into a thai curry with so many veggies and pieces of beef. It was surprisingly spicy which was exactly what I asked for. The banh mi was better than I've had in a while, with the fresh vegetables and the jalapenos making it crisp, and the pork flavors and bread made me crave another. Not too expensive of an option compared to other Thai places. Came again and ate in-- the portions were bigger and the pad thai was on point! Will be my go to place for refreshing sandwiches this summer.

Never disappoints! Though I hope they will re-expand their indoor seating someday. As it is they have a few small tables inside by the pick-up window and a few outside, but the dining area remains closed.

Delicious Thai iced tea!! Their pad thai is also excellent and they give you the ability to select how spicy you would like it on a 1 - 10 scale.

5 stars because I can definitely see myself coming back regularly! The price is low, dishes simple but flavorful, staff friendly, and ambience casual and peaceful. You pay up front and grab water for yourself. We ordered: + summer roll with shrimp (had just a hint of basil) + pepper steak with onions (I liked that the sauce wasn't heavy, tasted great with the rice it came with) + Singapore Mei fun (curry flavor was light, great blend of veggies with rice noods) I also tried the Thai iced tea, which was a bit too sweet for me, but pretty ok! My boyfriend is a big fan of this place after our dinner tonight. The food is the kind of simple, no frills meal that my mom might make. Will definitely be back!

Chicken vegetable curry, more like soup. Not worth it

Food is sub-par, customer service is even worse. Thankfully they only do to go offerse so you won't realize the food isn't worth what you're paying for until you're already home. Go anywhere else.

Daleng has changed their menu again. Prices went up a little as to be expected. The charge to upgrade from steamed rice to fried rice has tripled though which is very disappointing. However, I love the new menu additions, so I guess things balance out. There are now more choices to swap out proteins. A someone who doesn't eat beef or pork, this change has opened up a lot of new menu options for me. For instance, the Cambodian stir fry that used to only come with beef, can now be done with chicken, tofu, or shrimp. It was amazing with tofu and has so much flavor! They also will adjust the heat level on a scale of 1 to 10. I got an 8 which was spicy but not hot in my opinion. As someone raised in the south, I don't find anything in Philly hot heat wise though, so keep that in mind when ordering. My husband thought it was plenty hot for him. They also have have sweet and sour Vietnamese soup. We had it with shrimp and it comes with a side of rice. It was nice and tangy with plenty of shrimp. The vegetable curry is still my favorite dish here due to the perfectly cooked vegetables and balanced flavor, but the Cambodian stir fry is now a close second. The Thai tea is always excellent. If you haven't been to Daleng yet, you should give it a try!

So good. Got take out tonight and it was such a great decision. I got the chicken and vegetable curry, extra spicy and the tang tang chicken. The curry is a spicy item on their menu so when I asked for extra spice they requested a number from 1 to 10. I asked for an eight and an eight it was. It was delicious. Flavorful, peanut-y and the perfect heat. The tang tang chicken was good as well. Such good flavor. Not really crispy, which was off-putting at first, but that concern melted away when my mouth was delighted with flavor. I made a note to keep this in mind more for take out. (Although, the place is really sweet, so dining in is good too.) It's delicious. I also need to mention how friendly the staff is. It's a sweet spot. And I was told when I went to pick up my food that they are currently working on opening a bar in the back. I'm excited for that. This is a great spot. Try it.

Have they reopened the dining room yet?

Is their menu a mix of Cambodian, Thai and Vietnamese? Where are the owners actually from?

Correct, it's a mix of the 3 cuisines. I believe the chef was born in Cambodia, raised in Vietnam but has traveled throughout southeast Asia

Our staff were always looking out for us, and making suggestions and recommendations throughout our entire meal, and even helping us with some tips to better enjoy our meal (they saw me sweating in response to the Thai spice). Definitely made this a top-notch experience. Ambience here is great! Love places with *real* greenery indoors and a lot of natural light, like this place, and seats and tables were spread out sufficiently such that there was a nice background chatter without feel too infringed upon by other conversations. We ordered a good variety to share. The spare ribs and the glass noodles dishes were amazing! Everything came out as ready, but it was on a good cadence such that we were enjoying things as they were ready, hot and fresh. I'm no expert on legitimacy of flavors and dishes, but honestly this feels like the most legit stuff I've had in the Thai wheelhouse in a while. To boot, even though we said no to dessert because we had other plans, they came with a candle on a plate to still share birthday wishes. A nice touch! Definitely a fancy occasion kind of place in my books, but I'd definitely make a return trip on another occasion!

We got 3 entrees + 1 side: - pla nung manao (branzino) - tumis pla (fish curry) - gai yang naa por (half chicken) - yum makhua yao (eggplant) My favorite was the tumis pla and I was sad we didn't have leftovers to take home. The eggplant (I'm not always the biggest fan) was delicious - great texture and complexity of flavor. The food is a bit pricey (portions are quite small) but it all tastes delicious. We shared this among 4 adults and I left satisfied.

So you might stumble across info for the best times to secure a walk-up reservation and they'll tell you to arrive at least by 10:30am Thursday through Saturday as Mawn opens at 11am. Mind you, these people have PEOPLEZ as quite a few were holding spots in line for others in their party who could now casually stroll up to the line since their spot was secured by their people. I'm telling you have a game plan! If I knew then what I know now I probably would have got there at least by 9:30, seriously. My party got waitlisted as soon as we were just one person away from entering the restaurant and we had to wait for another 40 minutes. Fortunately it was a nice day so we just walked around the neighborhood and came back and got in. It's a small quaint place that only seats about 28 people. You'll feel like your visiting your favorite relatives home. You'll glance around at the other guest and feel like WOW i'm one of the few who finally made it into one of the most coveted highly acclaimed restaurants in Philly! Now let me see if it lives up to the hype! haha! I started out with the pear melon salad. It was light and refreshing. I thoroughly enjoyed the citrus notes and the pear slices. I would have never thought to add the pear but that really complimented the salad well. I was told that a MUST try is the head on soft shell shrimp. At first I wasn't thrilled about the thought of eating the head but said what the heck, lets go for the full experience! If you love softshell crabs you'll love this! There was nothing off putting about it. It simply taste like delicious premium shrimp in a fish caramel sauce with a hint of thai basil and chili. It was wonderful. I could have gone for a second round but I wanted to try other items. I enjoyed the seafood fried rice..this is similar to the crab fried rice but included uni roe and caviar with saracha on the side so you can regulate your heat level. I'll say this, while I enjoyed the seafood fried rice and the bonus elements of it, I was not a fan of the texture of the rice itself. Perhaps it's just my preference. The rice was light, fluffy and slightly sticky in texture whereas I prefer more of a thai fried rice which is dry, slightly firm and non-clumpy texture. But that's not taking any cool points away from Mawn. It's just my preference that i'm mentioning in case anyone else goes in expecting a different texture. I love the team service aspect at Mawn. Our waiter emphasized that we're not bugging anybody if we need anything we can stop any staff person walking by. I love that. Beef Noodle soup is delicous here. So is the yellow curry noodle soup. The fish is really good here too. I didn't realize I could have requested for it to be deboned (probably because I was talking to much lol) But my waiter was kind enough to come over and help me debone it when they saw I was struggling lol This was the first time I ever had a green thai tea! It was really a treat. Not overly sweet. Nothing but pure deliciousness here! And a super helpful warm friendly staff.

The papaya salad paired well with this, as it was tangy and refreshing, especially on such a hot day. The scallop crudo was a special for the night, but I think they should add this to their permanent menu because it was definitely a standout! The all star fried rice at $54 was also well worth it. I am often disappointed by dishes like these due to the lack of "stuff", but there was crab throughout and a generous portion of roe.
