Really yummy cumin lamb noodles and friendly service. Walked in on a weekday evening with no wait for a solo dinner
Man I had such high hopes for this place especially the dandan noodles and I was terribly let down. Got takeout on the way back home from a night out and my food was ready almost immediately with the extra spice I had requested. Glad I didn't opt to dine in as seating looked extremely limited and cramped. Stuck with a simple dandan noodle (this is what they're known for) and while the portion size was large, that's pretty much all it had going on. Sauce was decent but not enough to mask the doughy, overcooked noodles and grease puddles all over The worst part is it definitely upset my tummy and I did not feel good at all the day after. Tasted and felt a lot more like cheap lomein at panda express than an upscale Chinese restaurant
Amazing food good service. Cute place. Three cup chicken has amazing sauce. The Dan Dan noodles are amazing. They are rated as a 3/5 spice and don't let it scare you because it's really quite manageable.
I was visiting Philly for a work trip with a few coworkers. We wanted some Asian and were recommended Dan Dan. We ordered many different dishes so we could try everything. Everything was so hot fresh and delicious and brought out to our table and a very timely manner. My absolute favorites were the dumplings in chili oil and the Sichaun Chicken brought out in a sizzling pot. Food was to die for! Service was fast and efficient. Vibe and atmosphere was every low key and modern! Place didn't look as clean as it should be. I was only disappointed that I asked the server what desserts they have as it was a friends birthday and he said they had none. So if celebrating bring your own dessert! I am dreaming of this food and can't wait to go back upon my next visit!
A fellow Eliter took me here. I had the tea cold because it was so hot outside but this tea tastes better hot definitely. I wanted something not water. I also got a noodle dish to take home because I couldn't eat at the time I was visiting the restaurant. This is apparently a Taiwanese restaurant which is my heritage. The ripped beef in this is a familiar meat I have had at home and abroad but didn't think I would experience it at an American Asian restaurant. It is a real nice touch and they marinated this dish well. I feel like they could easily mess up the ripped beef if they didn't cook it properly. "Ripped beef" I don't believe is a proper translation. Maybe "braised beef" but I am not sure. They may also have this at Margaret Kuo's in Media. Thank you for the wonderful experience fellow Yelper and thank you to the patient waiter we randomly had. Excellent service, classy ambiance.
First I would like to say that I really enjoyed the food and non alchoholic drinks here. Second I would like to point out that the soda here is "local soda" so it won't be as carbonated as regular drinks. When I mentioned that my soda was flat to the bartender he told me that it was local so that's why it was flat. My party and I were surprised to hear that as it's something new. Even when brought to the attention of the manager on duty he noticed the soda was flat and didn't even say anything about it. His attitude was crass. I wouldn't return solely off of that experience. But other than that I would say the food has a fun twist if you're open to expanding your palate!
Dan dan is by far my favorite chinese food spot in Philly! Every dish is made so well and the flavors hit. The dan dan noodles themselves are a must get, they beat even the cumin lamb Noodles, which I am also obsessed with
10/10!! This place was absolutely delicious! We walked in at around 8:30pm on a Thu knowing they would close at 10pm. So I wasn't expecting great food or service so late. It was our first time and Elija our server was nice and friendly, gave us great recommendations. We didn't know how the portions were and after a long day (our flight to Philly had been delayed) we were starving. We wanted to order various items but even Elija suggested to go with the first 3 items and see how it goes. And sure enough it was plenty and enough for the two of us. All three items we ordered, the string beans, the dumplings in chili oil, and the dry pot (beef) that comes with rice were amazing in flavor, just perfect. We are going back for sure before I head back home. If you're in Philly, definitely stop by. p.s. it may be crowded as the entry area isn't big, but there's an upstairs area too. Or if you're not in a hurry I'm sure waiting won't hurt. It's worth it imo.
I cannot even begin to express how excited I was to find myself outside of this restaurant. It is a very small storefront along road construction that didn't look inviting from the outside, but once you step inside it is cozy with a cool Vibe. We were seated immediately despite no reservation on a weekend night. We quickly ordered the chili wontons and Jing Jiang Pork. I lived in China for a year and a half so my heart soared to see this dish. It is my favorite!! They more than did the dish justice and I will try to get back for a visit to Philly just to have it again! Maybe next time I will get the beef instead. The chili wontons weren't really all that fantastic. The chili oil had no heat and the wontons weren't well spiced and the meat was overworked and cooked, but they were alright. Just ok. The cocktails were great and the service was fast and fantastic!!
These noodles were SO GOOD! I cannot stress that enough, quite possibly the best I've had in my life. That has to be said up front! Our friends brought us here while we visited as their favorite and it's clear as to why, the entire experience was spot on!! Highly suggest reservations as they filled up very quick! By the time we were finished eating the area that I took a photo of was filled with people. They have a full service bar that was able to meet my needs for drinks! Few different drinks we tried all were tasty The show stopper was certainly their food however, like I said it was so good I did not want to eat it all because that means I wouldn't have any later! 100% recommend checking them out, I know they're in our return list for our next trip to Philly!!
History of Present Indulgence: I was in Philly for a few days and needed a place for lunch near my hotel. After finding Dan Dan's menu on Yelp, I decided to give it a try--and I'm glad I did! Physical Exam: Food - They serve fantastic classic Sichuan dishes, including a fish swimming in chili oil that I devoured all on my own with a side of rice. Everything I tried was delicious, though funny enough, the dan dan noodles themselves were my least favorite--not bad, just not a standout compared to the rest of the menu. When I brought friends the next day, we shared even more dishes, and all of them were hits. Some of my personal recs: - The Pork Belly in Sweet Garlic Chili Oil - Dumplings in Chili Oil - Cumin Lamb Hand-Ripped Noodles - Vegetarian String Beans - Dry Pot Dish - Green Peppercorn Hot Sauce Dish Service - Friendly and attentive, which is all you can ask for in a busy spot like this. Ambiance - It's a cozy space, with most first-floor seating around the bar, high tops, and small tables for 2-4 people. Upstairs, they have larger tables, which worked perfectly for our group of six. Assessment/Plan: If you're in the Rittenhouse area and craving Chinese food, Dan Dan should absolutely be on your list. Great food and solid service. There's also a happy hour that's worth checking out, with discounted bites and drinks, including a dealer's choice cocktail everyday depending on the bartender. Definitely worth a visit! I wish I could go back to try more of the menu. There's a ton of variety.

Covid-19 Outdoor Dining Review The outdoor dining area, although right on the street is made inviting by several planter benches with colorful vinca flowers. Our server wore a mask and gloves, despite the heat, and was very friendly and professional. Dan Dan is a bit overpriced and portions are small compared to other good Chinese food options. We were here for lunch, although they do not offer lunch specials. It was a standard menu. We ordered the Ginger Scallion Chicken and the Scallion Pancakes. Both items were really good. In the past , we have ordered the Dan Dan noodles. They were very tasty, but make sure you can bear the heat, because they are spicy. I've also had the Cumin with Chicken, Dry Pot with Chicken and Garlic Sauce with Pressed Tofu. The Cumin and Garlic sauce were both tasty. The Hot Pot was a bit of a let down, because it was the dish with the highest spiciness level, yet was bland and paled in comparison to the 1-star spice level of the Garlic Sauce dish. read more
My friend and I stumbled across this restaurant after a recommendation for The Happy Rooster. We did go into the Happy Rooster, but there was no place to sit. I was starving and I could eat Asian every single day so, I was thrilled to see Dan Dan. It is quaint on the inside, but they offer outside seating and we opted for that, however, for some odd reason we were sat at the table that did not have covering when there were tables available under the cover and the next patrons were offered covered seating. It wasn't a huge deal because it was about 6:30 so, the sun wasn't an issue and it wasn't raining, but still very odd to sit us there as it was the furthest table away. I was slightly disappointed that happy hour is offered from 4-6 pm which also happen to be the hours you cannot park on the streets closest to the restaurant, parking resumes at 6:30 so it may prove difficult to enjoy happy hour unless you happen to be lucky enough to work or live close by. The drinks we ordered were delicious and well balanced. I had the Phoenix dragon and my friend had the margarita with a melbac float. For dinner we had scallion pancakes and spring rolls as appetizers, rice noodles with shrimp and the farmer's dry rub lamb, we both enjoyed our food. We did have to end up fighting off gnats from our food and it was quite annoying while trying to enjoy our delicious food. If it weren't for the gnats and parking situation this would be a five star review. We did opt for another round of the awesome Phoenix dragon. read more
First time here and completely blown away by the decor and design -- very nice place for lunch or dinner (especially lunch as the sun lights up the entire room). Food came out pretty quickly, service was great in the beginning, but it seemed like we got less attention as it became busier. Dan Dan Noodles - Some great Dan Dan Noodles. Not a lot of heat -- just right to be able to stuff your face without having to take water breaks. These are pretty light and fun to eat. The flavor isn't intense -- makes a good shareable appetizer or side. Scallion Pancake - This is a pretty sizable appetizer; you get a pretty large pancake cut into 8 slices with dipping sauce. It's flaky and not overly oily, which of course makes for a great scallion pancake. Soup Dumplings - Can't go wrong with these. Solid soup dumplings. Ginger Shredded Duck - Pretty good, but seemed like it was missing something. Duck was flavorful and juicy, but maybe a sauce would have worked well with it and the green peppers. Taiwanese gal over here. I do think this place is catered to a specific type of crowd and I think it's a little more upscale than I'm used to with Taiwanese restaurant. Definitely not a super casual family friendly kind of place but cute for a night out Now onto food. First off drinks were good & strong. Food was actually pretty good. I got the Taiwanese style white pepper chicken and it was crispy well seasoned- had no issue. I think they could've used more basil for the flavor but again still great Would be interested in exploring the rest of the menu. The hype around this place heightened my expectations, so much so that I brought my mom (picky & opinionated) for dinner. We didn't leave too disappointed, but also not wow'd the slightest bit. This place is PACKED on the weekends, so make sure to reserve a table a few days in advance (unless you want bar seating). To start, we ordered the wontons in chili oil and scallion pancakes. The scallion pancakes were great, crispy, thin and scallion-forward of course. Great sauce as well. The wontons were okay. The chili oil had a kick to it, but not much flavor. If you can't handle spice, don't let the wontons sit in the chili oil for too long because it'll seep and the wontons will be SO SPICY (which is what happened to us)! The filling didn't have much flavor, imo. For entrees, I ordered my mom the spicy beef hand-ripped noodles and I ordered myself the Taiwanese beef hand-ripped noodle soup. The highlight of the meal was definitely the soft and tender beef! It's just like the beef we love at Din Tai Fung. However, both of our dishes came with 4-5 pieces of beef and a few bok choys, and it wasn't a large piece either. We were left with healings of noodles and no beef. A bit sad. My mom couldn't finish her dish because it was FLOODED with chili oil. I gave her the rest of my soup since that was pretty delicious and a nice break from all of the spice. Overall, this is an okay place to go to if you want to grab Szechuan food around the area. However, I'd rather walk a few more blocks to Chinatown or more North for better food for the price. read more

I would rate this spot higher if not for one dish that I actually found close to inedible. The food here is pretty decent Szechuan, and I found the spice levels to be acceptable. Wontons in chili oil ($8.45) - 4/5. The chili sauce for this was on point. The filling was ample too. Sichuan cold chili noodles ($9.75) - 4/5. This was a lot of noodles and the sauce was great, but the noodles weren't really cold. Eggplant w/garlic sauce ($14.95) - 4/5. The sauce for this could've been better, and I think the eggplant could've been softer. Spicy scallion shredded chicken ($12.45) - 1/5. The instant I saw this chicken come out covered in a mound of green stuff, I knew it was going to be bad. The sauce was super bitter, but the actual chicken was fine. We had to try to clean off the sauce and dip the chicken in chili sauce so we could eat it. In short, avoid the chicken. Everything else seems okay. read more
Dan Dan is such a solid spot. It's such a great option for delicious food in the city. The garlic sauce with chicken is my go-to, but everything I've had here has been really good. Service is usually quick. There's bar and table seating inside. They also have some outdoor / street side seating as well. I've always gone for lunch but their happy hour looks pretty good too! read more
Well located and decent spot for Sichuan style dishes - I tried the wontons in chili oil and Sichuan cold noodles and both were tasty. The noodles came with a little shredded cucumber on top - would recommend ordering separate veggies or something else with it since the noodles did not contain much else. read more

Pretty gross . The chicken in the 3 cup tasted like it had been microwaved it was so rubbery and the Dan Dan noodles were greasy over cooked mess . A total waste of $30 read more

First time having food in Philadelphia and my friend for a res here. Great selection of Chinese food and the spice was the perfect amount for someone who prefers food to be mild spice. The sauces on the dishes were also really great. Def recommend the dry hot pot dish read more
This is one of the diamond in the rough finds in Philly. The food can't get anymore authentic than this. I was browsing on Yelp for restaurants close by and found this gem and made a reservation using the Yelp app. Upon entering, we were promptly seated on the 2nd floor. The ambience is really modern and sleek with their wooden decor and furniture, along with a slight oriental feeling as they had lanterns hanging from the ceiling. Makes for a great place for a dinner date. My gf and I split two things on the menu: an appetizer and an entree. Beef and Tripe in Chili Oil is served cold and contains peanuts. It is a great way to prepare your taste buds for the spicy food you're about to conquer, hopefully. For the entree, we got the Spicy Aromatic Pot w Fish. This contained bunapi and wood ear mushrooms, onion, bamboo shoots, dry pepper, cauliflower, bell peppers, sesame, potato, and five spices all stir fried with your choice of protein. We were able to get these dishes less spicy, although it was still pretty spicy to make you sweat. The only down side is that the service is a little on the slow side. It took us a while for us to place our order in with them and have our drinks served to us upon ordering. The items can be on the pricey side, but for what they serve, I think it's worth it. read more
This place is a never miss! Came here for the second time with a group and we each ordered different things. I don't remember the exact names, but I got the dry pot chicken and other people got a duck dish, a pork dish, and a different chicken dish that had peanuts. Everything was amazing. I've never been so impressed by multiple things on the menu at a restaurant. I personally loved the duck the most, but wished it was spicy. You get your ordered dish, plus unlimited white rice for the table. Everything from the presentation, the service, the tenderness of the meats were a hit! I'll definitely be returning soon. read more

One of the most reliable places; been here more times than I can count and the quality is always superb whether you dine in or do takeout. Mapo tofu is one of my favorite foods in the world and Dan Dan's is great - perfectly spicy, savory, and has a nice Sichuan taste. The hand-ripped noodles are chewy and delicious and they're great with either beef or lamb. Spice level is good, coming from someone who has a very low spice tolerance. Lastly, can't go wrong with scallion pancakes. Good app for the table and to get the meal started - crispy, flaky, and delicious. Drink selection is pretty good too, wide range of beers, cocktails, and spirits. Wait staff is always courteous and attentive - my heart belongs to Dan Dan. read more
Went here with a friend after some shopping and we wanted a quick bite to eat. Got seated right away (it was about 4:30 pm so not busy) They had a bar and high booths to sit in. We got seated right next to a couple. If you're following COVID precautions, be careful. It seemed like these tables were VERY close together which no shield. Anyways, my friend orders the house made ginger ale which was very interesting and good! I start off with the wonton in chicken broth. The waiter accidentally brought me the wonton in chili oil. I explained it to our waitress (who said he was new lol) and she fixed it right away! I was expecting this to be more like wonton soup, so the broth was very bland. However, I ordered the Dan Dan Noodles which were amazing!! Loved the flavor. I got the brilliant idea of putting the wontons and broth into the noodles to make like a ramen. It was DELISH! Loved it so much! My friend got the scallion pancakes (not pictured but delicious) and the spicy beef and noodles (not sure if I tagged the right one). The beef was really good but it was SPICY! We did not expect that much of a kick! She couldn't finish eating it and ending up bringing it home. This place is the GO TO SPOT for Dan Dan noodles in the Philly area. Possibly the best dish here. I also suggest trying their veggie dishes, specifically the string beans. I've been here multiple times and I'm never disappointed by the food or staff. Everything here is packed with flavor and a good amount of spice. However, if you can't handle spice, I'm not sure if this would be the place for you. Whenever I get asked about good Asian food in Philly, I always refer people to this spot. People that personally know me know how much I rave about this place. However, I will say that the space is relatively small and would not suggest it for a large group. But the food makes up for it in my opinion haha read more

Came here with my friends for dinner and we ordered the dry pot chicken, green beans, chili oil wontons, and dan dan noodles. The green beans were definitely the star of the show. They were perfectly blistered and so flavorful with the fried garlic, definitely do not skip this when you come to Dan Dan! The rest of the meal was also pretty good, I liked the dan dan noodles but nothing else stood out to me. Service was a bit slow but the restaurant is very popular and was super busy when we were there so makes sense. read more
My go-to restaurant for the past 3 years. I come here for a lot of different occasions and really there is no bad time for Dan Dan. I've done take out a few times as well and had no issues. The dishes are pricey so this may be a treat yo self kinda meal once, rather than a weekly event. A few dishes I've enjoyed over the years: 1) Veggie Dan Dan noodles - a classic must try. 2) Cumin Tofu - LOVEEEE. Chewy fried tofu - It grows on you. I usually don't like spicy but 4/5 spice level is very easy to enjoy in this dish. This isn't the fact for some other dishes!! 3) Tofu with long peppers - good! 4) Scallion pancakes - yum, get it. 5) Mapo tofu - the sauce is bomb. read more

The food was decent . My thing was the 17 dollar string beans . Like cmon they weren't made out of gold or prepared special . I would have preferred jasmine white rice but it was regular white rice . The noodles were decent . Everything was pretty decent . I know other options are pretty good so next time I'll try something different read more

Came here to eat before Hamilton. It wasn't very busy inside since it was Tuesday evening but we sat outside. Only did a few appetizers due to time and one entree but I wish I had more time to eat everything! We got the spicy cucumbers, dumplings, scallion pancakes and the three cup chicken with rice. I also ordered a Moscow mule and everything came out with so much time to spare. Can't wait to come back to the city and eat here again. read more

Solid choice! I was skeptical, as a chinese american I am always skeptical of any asian food establishment with double digit price points. This place did not disappoint. Spicy, flavorful and plentiful. My husband and I ordered the beef and tripe in chili oil, (5/5) Great flavor and cooked just right not chewy at all. The chili oil was legit top level spice snow pea leaves, and the (5/5) Not too oily, perfectly salted and plentiful! lamb hand pulled noodles (4/5) One less star because the noodles seemed to have been sitting for a bit so clumps we're stuck together which funny enough my husband likened to a folded up potato chip which he likes so he ate those. Flavor wise on point and again more than enough for two people. PROS: authentic menu and execution Flavorful and plentiful Friendly and attentive staff CONS: Can't think if any other than it gets pretty packed once the clock strikes noon- but obviously a sign of a good place! read more

Came here for dinner with a friend. It was prime dinner time on a Sunday, but there was no wait at all which is really nice! The inside of the restaurant is really nice! A very good environment to catch up with friends. The noise level is also perfect. There is a lot of food on the menu. We ended up ordering the scallion pancake, wonton in chili oil, and Dan Dan noodles. The food were all amazing. The dan dan noodles serving is also huge. Try to share it if you could. The scallion pancake is also really well made, not too salty or oily. read more
