This has been my second time coming here, and I can easily say that this will def be in my top recommended! I'll be honest, I was a bit skeptical about this place at first cause well, for one, their entire restaurant was named after a specific dish, and dan dan noodles are my absolute favorite so I had high expectation. Well considering I'm giving this place 5 stars, it's safe to say that DanDan has exceeded my expectations. So first off, the atmosphere of the place is pretty modern, I love the vibes, the decor, and the staff is always super friendly and amazing. The place itself is quite small, but they do offer outdoor seating as well which I think is great. The food: all hits no misses. I swear these are the best Dan Dan noodles in Philly, the noodles taste so fresh, have a great texture, and the sauce is the perfect blend of spice and sesame/peanut, packed with flavor. Their other dishes are great too! I recommend the dumplings in chili oil and spicy cucumbers. They also have great entrees and veggie dishes like the scallion beef and eggplant in garlic sauce. I haven't been but DanDan also has a happy hour which seems like a great place to go for food and drinks. Overall, I definitely recommend to check this place out if you haven't! read more

Wow! This meal was still steaming when we got it delivered. The flavors of each dish are incredible and you'll want to get yourself a side of chili oil to put on...like everything. Ordered take out from Dan Dan after seeing high ratings on Uber Eats and we were not disappointed! We ordered around 6PM on a Friday night, and our order was set to be ready by 6:45PM so really quick turnaround. We did deliver, and our delivery guy followed directions and left our order outside our door, which worked out very well. For eats, we both ordered the dan dan noodles as our main (felt like we couldn't not get them!) and split the scallion pancakes as an app. The scallion pancakes were OK - they were very greasy so must have been fried in lots of oil. That being said, they were tasty but that might have been a byproduct of the heavy deep fry. They were served with soy sauce, which was a nice touch, but we couldn't get past the grease. On the other hand, the dan dan noodles were very nicely done. They were coded as a 3/5 spice, but boy, were they spicy! Our noses were both running the entire time. The flavors of the dish were very good though - the sauce was strong and rich, but not over powering the noodles themselves, which were nicely done and clearly homemade. The minced pork meshed well with the overall dish, but the minced nature made the meat get a little lost in the noodles, which was disappointing. Outside of that, there appeared to be a few green onions and bean sprouts mixed in as well, but some extra veggies would have added to the dish too. But overall, we did really enjoy the dan dan and could tell it was a much elevated dish from traditional lo mein. The price of the dish was extremely reasonable (~$10 on UberEats), but the portions were HUGE! We split one dish between the two of us and were incredibly full after. So definitely worth the price! We enjoyed our takeout meal from Dan Dan, and we were overall pleased with our selections. We will probably opt for a less greasy app next time, and we will explore other (less spicy) noodle and entree options too to give the entire menu a chance. But this is a great spot for dan dan noodles, just be prepared for spice when you go in! read more

For those whose OK with a good amount of heat 4 to 5 is where you wanna be at. I love spicy food. Wings are the only thing I'm not a fan of. We started with the scallion pancake, which was crispy and delicious (not super greasy). We had a ton of other dishes, and noodles were the easy favorite. -Pork belly burger (bao) - the pork was ok, but the bao was so dry and tough to chew. Would skip this one for sure, worst executed plate of the night. -Dan Dan, Sichuan oil noodles, and chilled sesame noodles. All delicious. All huge servings for $9 or so, very filling. Chewy noodles and great flavor. In order of preference: chilled sesame, dandan, Sichuan. -pumpkin noodles were good, but pretty plain. Good to share but would be upset if this was my main. The food was excellent overall. The cumin lamb dish was exceptional, especially if you enjoy a good dose of cumin as I do ! The lamb was perfectly cooked. The only recommendation I have for the chef, is to cut the lamb into smaller chunks, to facilitate using the chopsticks. Still an excellent flavor profile. Scallion pancakes were very good and flakey in consistency. The eggplant in garlic sauce was a great dish as well. So overall I would definitely return to sample more dishes. Staff were friendly but the food has deteriorated in quality so much. The green cold chicken dish is an offensive dish that no longer resembles Taiwanese/Chinese food. It was a Saturday night in September when I called to make a reservation for six. They told us they could accommodate us outside which we were thrilled to hear since it was a beautiful night out. They had put no form of decorations or anything to block us from the street traffic which I did not enjoy. That was the first reason why I wasn't in love with this place from the start. We ended up ordering a few appetizers since we were so hungry. We ordered Scallion pancakes, Dan Dan noodles of course, and Dumplings in Chili Oil. The appetizers were fantastic. They were full of flavor in every bite and all tasted very fresh. I was excited for the entrees seeing that the appetizers were so yummy. I ordered the Garlic Sauce dish because it sounded delicious and many people online were raving about it as well. It was chicken sauteed with their sweet, sour, and spicy sauce with ginger, garlic, wood ear mushrooms, and red peppers. My food was good but nothing I'd return back for. Chris had ordered the Kung Pao dish which we expected to be amazing but it ended up tasting like hot dogs. Not sure why but the entrees were nothing near as good as the appetizers we ate earlier. I am always on the lookout for good Chinese restaurants in the area and came across DanDan after a quick search for restaurants open during Christmas. Ambiance/ Service: Definitely way smaller than it seemed in the pictures but cozy and well lit. We went on Christmas and didn't need to make a reservation. I was slightly disappointed by the service initially but our server was nice and attended to our questions patiently. Food: Both my friend and I love spicy food and were torn between the ton of options they had. We decided to go with the Sichuan Style Fried Rice and Dry Pot Style with Chicken. The portion size was good for two people. We had some left over even though we both came here hungry after our 5 mile run. The fried rice was very flavorful and went really well with the dry pot entrée. We expected the dry pot dish to be oily so we weren't surprised. Discovered this amazing place from last trip, they have authentic and delicious Taiwan Food! Was just myself visiting, so quickly seated on the bar. I ordered braised pork, Dan Dan noodle and cucumber, they were all very good! I can't finish all of them so pack next day for snack and lunch, were still quite fresh. Service was excellent. My takeout mostly missed the mark. This is the second time I've given this place a try. I've been to quite a few world class Szechuan style restaurants, and Dan Dan is severely lacking in distinct flavor. They don't even compare to their hometown rival Han Dynasty. Food: Chicken Potstickers, Spring Roll, Dan Dan Noodles, Garlic Sauce Chicken, Kung Pao Chicken, Smoked Pork Belly and Leeks, Shrimp Lo Mein. Unfortunately nothing stood out. The biggest let downs were the Shrimp Lo Mein which had the smallest shrimp that I've ever seen, Chinese restaurants rarely use the highest quality stuff, but this was pitiful. The Pork Belly and Leeks was a plate of bacon and leeks, dry and flavorless smh. Finally, the Garlic Chicken had a strange smell and was lackluster at best. I won't be returning. read more

Takeout/delivery review Ordered the Mapo Tofu and Dan Dan noodles. I'm a big fan of Szechuan food and hadn't given this place a try yet. The best part was definitely the portion sizes. Both of these dishes lasted me around 3-4 meals, which was a great bang for buck. I thought the Mapo Tofu and Dan Dan noodles were both lacking in flavor. The texture of both was great, and the dishes did the job, but I wasn't very impressed. The spice levels could also be higher given that this is Szechuan food. Since moving to south Philly we've been looking for a new go-to every week Chinese place to replace China Garden. For several of our 10 months here, Dan Dan was it. Hurrah! TLDR: Good quality, authentic Chinese/ Taiwanese food for decent portions and reasonable prices in Center City! *********************** As my friends and I put it as we were leaving, this is a restaurant that we would feel comfortable bringing our Chinese parents to/ the best Chinese/ Taiwanese food we have had without needing to order in Chinese. I usually have different expectations of food authenticity and price efficiency for Chinese/ Taiwanese restaurants outside of a Chinatown or not a family-run business. However, I will say I was pleasantly surprised, so I applaud the owners for sticking true to their roots in DanDan's menu, cooking, and portion sizes. The menu has dish names in both English and Chinese. For starters, we got the crispy spicy cucumbers, scallion pancakes, and wonton in chili oil. For entrees, we got the dan dan noodles, three cup chicken, dry spicy fish (unsure if that is the exact wording of the name on the menu), twice cooked pork (I think that is the English name for hui guo ruo 回鍋肉?) and garlic eggplant. Out food came with 2 medium-sized bowls of rice. The scallion pancakes were kind of small (only ten small pieces), but the eggplant portion size was pretty large. Again, I was pleasantly surprised by all the flavoring! Not that I'm by any means an expert on Chinese/ Taiwanese food and its authenticity, but this was definitely the most authentic food I've had in Philly outside of Chinatown, and for reasonable prices too. The inside vibe is dark and ambient, great vibe for a date night or fun casual dinner with friends! It's a little small, so if you're coming with a bigger group, definitely call ahead. We were seated right away, but also I think we got lucky and there wasnt much foot traffic, from it being a rainy, cold night. Overall, good Chinese food for good price, especially if you share everything with your group! My group of 7 went family style, and everything we ordered was enough for us to all feel full. Tasty Szechuan dishes and excellent service at very reasonable prices in Center City. The space is small and the upper level has more seating. The decor is modern which I appreciate as it doesn't give off a typical Taiwanese/Chinese restaurant "feels". My two friends and I ordered several different small plates and entrees to share. My favorites were the pork belly with garlic chili oil, the pickled Szechuan shrimp and the snow pea leaves. I like how they didn't overcook the snow pea where it becomes soggy and drench in oil. The shrimp was cooked perfectly with the right amount of flavors. The pork belly was melt in your mouth spicy good. That dish might have been my star on the table. Unfortunately, I wasn't a fan of their version of dan dan noodles. It had an unusual peanut taste, which I'm not used to when it comes to dan dan noodles. Also, it was lacking in flavor. The spicy cucumbers were refreshing. The spicy wontons had spiciness and flavor. I'm just used to the wonton skins being thinner in texture with this dish. Overall, very delicious meal. We ate to our bellies and hearts content with a good amount of leftovers, and the total bill was just $82.56. Now that's value! I can't wait to come back when I'm in Philly! read more

I went to DanDan twice. Once for lunch and another time for dinner. Each time I sat at the bar which serves a full menu. For lunch, I had the Ma Po Tofu which was very good. The perfect amount of heat. The lunch portion is smaller than the dinner portion. I would definitely order this again. When I went for dinner, I wanted to try something different. It did not seem like a popular weekend spot, so I imagine it's popular for dinners or for take-out. Food: I am a big fan of wonton soup, and thought they were prepared very well - the wonton skin was soft, and the broth was mild. The vegetable lo mein came in a large portion size - good price for the amount of food you get! This restaurant definitely tailors well to people who like American Chinese food (e.g., fried rice, lo mein), but also has good Chinese food options.
