Some reviews might be confused on how being a profitable baker works and want some cafe experience but the margin vs reality on exclusively baked goods operations won't allow for a Panera experience. You can loiter somewhere else. You get amazing products to take and enjoy with your friends and family from Dan's. Asking for more is missing the point and would surely result in a need to inflate their fair prices. This isn't dining, but it is delicious and to expect otherwise is to miss the point entirely. And it's not cheap. 8 bucks for a chocolate croissant. And u absolutely have to go anyway. This humble location is tucked away unless you are on the hunt. Like Alicia R said, your GPS will take you behind the building. Once you get inside, there's one long table that seats about 8, a high counter overlooking the street with a few stools and one small table seating 3. That's all. Many people get their order to-go but if you want to eat your toast and sit too (their light blue walls, wooden accents and fresh bread smells adds to the experience), plan accordingly! Two friends and I split three toast flights and three lattes. The pastries looked heavenly and we sampled a cinnamon roll that was cut up and set out upon ordering. Heavenly. It. Was. But we stuck to our toast (country sour, black mountain, sunflower flax seed, 2x sesame and more) and spreads (almond butter, raspberry jam, cultured butter, lemon curd, maple cream). The pictures speak for themselves. The presentation on a wooden board is perfect. The toast is perfect. The spreads are elegantly perfect and I've never called butter elegant before. It isn't easy to find Toast Bar, but I promise that the drive/hunt/GPS failure is worth it. They are open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 8-4, and there is plenty of parking outside the building. The space inside is small, so I wouldn't recommend coming with more than one other person if you plan on eating inside. While we were eating, I noticed that many people were getting pastries and coffee to-go. You cannot go wrong with a toast flight! You choose three breads and three spreads for the flight. The challah bread was my favorite, and I loved the cloverton cheese/lemon curd spread. My cold brew coffee was delicious without any additional sweetener or cream. Of course, I grabbed a few pastries to take home. The cinnamon spun roll was perfectly flaky, sweet, and filled with cinnamon sugar flavor. We were told that "some people were lost" and they hope to restart them soon. Without knowing specifics, we were a little disappointed. The bread options that were available seemed burnt. Weekend toast flights are delicious, and beautiful! I'm a huge fan of the seeded einkorn bread, hearty and Danish-style, with freshly-churned, salted butter. The lemon curd spread with this salty cream cheese was delicious too. Husband loved the "maple cream" on challah, like icing on cake. I ended up walking out with a shopping bag full of bread after our breakfast, so good!! Atmosphere is adorable, bright, and open. Talk about a hard to find spot, but it was so worth checking out! You may have heard about Toast Bar at the end of 2014, but it hasn't seemed to have made any waves on Yelp here with only 4 reviews. However, the place was busy the entire time we were there, so they seem to be doing just fine. This is Dan The Baker's creation, who is providing bread to some of the best establishments in town like The Guild House, Alana's, Ray Ray's, Skillet, and the list goes on and on, so you can bet they're putting out high quality product. It is a bit pricey, but the ingredients are all top notch, and you'll want everything here. I was actually surprised by how many things they were serving in a space that can barely fit about five small tables and one large communal ones. If it's busy, it can definitely get a bit cramped in there. The menu pictured here has definitely been expanded. They're serving Cafe Brioso coffee as well which is always delicious. Since it was our first time, we had to try a toast flight of the sesame, country sour, and one other that I'm still trying to remember. You get a choice of three spreads as well, and we ended up with their house made butter, raspberry, and maple walnut toppings. This costs $5.50 and was pretty good, but I needed a bit more to really appreciate what was going on here. They have tartines, which is basically an open-face sandwich, so my girlfriend and I split a ham and swiss one. The pricing is a bit dteep at $11, but oh my God was that good. The cheese is super rich, and you should feel pretty full after downing one of these. If I've had a tartine in the past five years, I can't remember, but I won't forget this one. At this point I was still teetering between 4 and 5 stars, but what brought me here to begin with was the Columbus Alive dessert article where they had mentioned Toast Bar's lemon square. This could change your life. This may be the best lemon square I've ever had. It was so good and super lemony and everything awesome. You need to order one if you come here. The bottom crust was thick and crunchy, and I wish I had an entire sheet. We both loved this place and will definitely be back. The service is very friendly and the food comes out quick. There's a whole table of pastries as well, so you could come back several times and try something new. The croissants they had there were enormous! Without GPS you'd probably have a hard time finding this place, but if you're anywhere near Grandview then it's totally worth checking it out. read more

I had a hell of time finding this place (GPS took me BEHIND the building), but it's worth the effort. If you're familiar with Dan the Baker, you know his artisan bread is some of the best this side of the Atlantic, and I'd go through hell and high water for a crust of it. Once I found the front door, it was easy to park on the street and barge right on in. It's a small setup, but there was plenty of seating when we made our visit. Call it cozy. I was overwhelmed by the menu, so I took the easy way out with a toast flight. You get to choose three breads and spreads for $5.50, and I went with the pecan raisin bread, asiago parmesan, and I believe mie de pain. They complemented the cultured butter, chocolate hazelnut, and raspberry jam spreads very well. Everything is house made and tastes ridiculously fresh. My friend and I couldn't stop raving over the raspberry jam...it's really a thing of wonder. Store-bought jam is now ruined for me. That and the cultured butter (made with Snowville Creamery milk) made the toast sing. To drink I had the matcha latte which is also cause for exclamation. The matcha was perfectly balanced with honey and milk. It was almost too pretty to drink, but I didn't let that stop me. Between the flight and latte, I was perfectly happy, and I can't wait to come back to try the pizza bread and hot chocolate (plus homemade marshmallow). I needed something for a party and saw everything at the farmer's market but nothing really stood out until I tried the bread Dan the Baker had there that day. Has anyone else noticed that Columbus is quietly becoming a foodie capital? Perhaps the title "Indie Foodie Capital of the World" fits, especially considering the there seems to be real money being made this arena, as opposed to the local indie art scene. At least while Columbus promises to continue being credited as one of the fattest metro areas in the country, we can proudly say it's because we are stuffing ourselves with flights of artisanal toast and pumpkin pie croissants, thanks to Dan the Baker! Enter The Toast Bar: Charlie and I decided to try this new breakfast party at Dan the Baker in Grandview and it was a real treat! It is a little off the beaten path, on a totally weird street that is neither charming, cool, or sensible. But weird is ok with me, and besides, the building is really beautiful despite its location. Inside is a smallish yet warm hybrid retail/sit down space. It feels similar to Tasi, but much smaller. The decor is beautiful, and gave me the feeling that I was on a photo set of some hipster folksy Portland insert of an Anthropologie catalogue. Everything Mise En Place. We sat at a table and ordered 2 flights of toast (wasn't kidding) with the trimmings, an Ethiopian Yirgacheffe (Briosso) + Mexico (One Line), and a Pumpkin Pie Croissant. Everything was amazing! My favorite bread was the Dutch (Spelted) Rye, but even the milk bread was delicious. And there was a crazy delicious Mushroom Duxelle. A few jams, fresh made, a nice chocolate hazelnut spread. It was a perfect breakfast treat in a delightful setting. The people who took care of us were very knowledgable and sweet, and I felt like I was a guest in someone's house. Dan spent time talking to us and we were really inspired by his passion! We were also shocked at how thin and young he was, and I personally marveled at that feat. Dan should consider coming out of the back room wearing a fat suit, because it kind of pisses you off when, after stuffing your face with toast, the chef emerges looking like a Hot Topic model. As Charlie and I drove home, we began adding up in our heads how much everything was. We somehow spent $24. My only criticism of this experience was that it was either a tad too expensive, or for that price we would have liked more food. A $5.50 flight of bread gets you 3 modest pieces of toast and 3 ramekins of toppings, but they are not filled to the top but half way at best. This is a complicated discussion because one has to consider the true value of high quality ingredients. We are moving into an era where we want good quality ingredients, and it comes at a price. That being the case, we still felt like it was a little uneven, and couldn't figure out what came to $24. We concluded that we must have been charged for 2 croissants? When we got home, we saw an email of the receipt... a SEVEN DOLLAR CROISSANT! Jesus fucking Christ, you can't find a $7 croissant in New York City, because, just like its friends cyclops, Sasquatch, Yetti, and Santa Claus... It DOESNT EXIST! There is no such thing as a $7 croissant. If that croissant lowers to $5, or grows 16oz, I will give 5 stars. Other than this, we had a terrific time and will definitely go back. This is some of the best bread in town, and Dan is the real article. If you haven't tried his bread, you are not exercising your civic responsibilities. First thing: listen to the the NPR/Radiolab/podcast that talks about artisan toast in San Francisco. Second: grab a couple of neat friends who won't scoff at the idea of artisan toast. Third: Enjoy Great quality bread and spreads in this hidden location off some side street. Get the toast flight and try out a couple of their specialities. You get a choice of three different slices of toast complemented by 3 different spreads ranging from butters to preserves to cheeses. Ask the employees for her recommendations! I recommend the Country Sour and the Lemon Curd/Cloverton Cream Cheese (to-die-for). Their cultured butter is also quite unique. Place is small, so you might have to wait around a little bit for a place to sit, but there aren't too many people who actually come and sit. There are 2 small tables and 1 larger table. If toast isnt your cup of tea, and yet you managed to stumble your way in, their pastries (croissants, cookies, etc) look pretty good. It does seem to take them FOREVER to just bring out your platters of toast and spreads, which I don't understand, so make sure your company is good because you'll be waiting for a while... read more

One of my favorite finds in Columbus. Located in a really unassuming complex, you'll find Dan the baker. Small, but mighty. Filled with just a few tables and a lot of heart, this is where you can find the best pastries in town. Their ham and cheese croissant is THE BOMB. Seriously, so good. Same with their lemon bars. Packed with flavor and only the best local ingredients. But the first time you go you gotta get a toast flight. Yes, a flight. Of toast. You pick out 3 types of bread (all made from scratch in house) and 3 spreads. My favorite spread is the black maple walnut. Even the regular butter is the best you've ever had. I am obsessed with Dan the Baker's bread. It is so, so good. I first tried it at the Clintonville Farmer's Market years ago, and when I moved to another city, I missed it the whole time. Now I'm back, and it's just as good as ever! When I visited the shop, they had great COVID precautions. Customers don't enter the store, but the sales table is in the doorway and the employee stands behind it. They no longer have their toast bar open (not due to COVID, just changing priorities), but sell breads, pastries, heirloom grains/flours, and local kombucha at the shop. When we went, they also had some Chicken of the Woods mushrooms that Dan had foraged. Their Sun Flax bread is my favorite, but I love every single bread I've tried. All their breads are are made with sourdough yeast, and are SO moist and fluffy, with perfect crusts... unlike any other bread I've tasted. The flavor is so unique and so good. A lot of their breads are vegan, just ask. My only complaint is that there are no vegan pastries... I understand they're prioritizing local ingredients like dairy, but it would be so great if they had a vegan option! read more

Weirdest experience: never been there so I called for directions where they're located to come buy from them. Called several times; it went to various voice mail boxes, all full. Someone named Mary finally answered. When (trying to be helpful) I told her voice mails all full, she laughed and said "that's how we like it; we don't want to be bothered" and said too hard to tell me where bakery located and look it up on my phone's GPS. Told her I don't have that, could she just give me nearest major street, I wanted to come spend money (!) Kept insisting too difficult to tell me, I should look it up. Then kept saying "hello" repeatedly and hung up on me. I called back, Mary answered, said too busy to help me, then that it was a bad call, that "this is ridiculous" and hung up on me again. Given that their ingredients are organic and locally sourced, a little higher of a price (which isn't much) is understandable. My advice is buy what you want and worry about the bill later! Update to knock this down to 4 stars. I went back to try something besides the famous (and appropriately so-im telling you this concept is genius and the execution is flawless) toast flight. Ended up trying the almond croissant, which was really disappointing. I thought it was a bit dry and basically fell apart into 2 halves when I tried to bite into it. I think they must brush some almond flavoring in the middle, which is why it fell like that, but it made it seem like it was not well made. I also thought flavor of the almonds was overpowering - like eating straight amaretto syrup. Granted, I've been spoiled by the almond croissant at another local spot, so i am hard to please. I was also a bit taken aback by the prices of single loaves of their bread. It's local and tastes good but seems like they might be pushing their luck a bit to far with their attempt to be a pretentious luxury brand. Don't get me wrong. I finally caught up with Dan the Baker @ Worthington's Saturday farmers market. Strolling the sidewalks, I spotted there stand. Sampled a few of their many bread/dough-based offerings, and boy oh boy are their baked items top notch! I'm not a huge bread/pastry lover, solo that is. But pair it with cheese and a topping, you can count me in. Their two-table long spread at the market was quite a salivating sight. The lady never did tell me the exact name, but I got a circular pastry that has a custard-like filling in the center. Have I mentioned my love for CUSTARD? Well, it's a dandy lil addition to any day! And this round gem was incredibly good! The pastry part I was worried would be dried out and flavorless, but proved myself wrong. I now look forward to stopping in to this brick-and-mortar location.
