I know I just posted a review a couple of months ago but wanted to update my review since we ordered something completely different this time around. This is the first time we've been here on a weekend and we're disappointed they don't offer the lunch specials menu on the weekends. Today we ordered three different cut rolls, a spicy poke bowl and an order of mixed tempura. The poke bowl was delicious however it was not spicy at all so I added some wasabi to it and then it was perfect. Their mixed tempura was light and crispy. Our favorite time to come here is during the week so we can take advantage of their great lunch combination specials.

I stopped in here to get a bite of sushi I was starving after sitting in traffic. I ordered the bluefin tuna sushi and the scallop sushi. I sat outside enjoying the sunshine of the parking lot. I also had a cucumber salad with a lot of red ginger.

Our favorite neighborhood date night restaurant. Dana Kai located off Niguel and Camino Del Avion. Parking is a little tricky. Great place to come for some sushi, drinks and my husband's favorite two item combo. Staff is friendly and with great service. Next time you come to Dana Point/ Laguna Niguel stop by and give them a try.

Ok wait! I'm overwhelmed in the Best way ... I walked in on a sunny Sunday to be delighted to experience a Clean, High Vibe Atmosphere and finally a great Ventilation system! Legit! Dana Kai is sooo impressive!!! AND even a I just found my Dream roll. I am constantly trying to communicate with sushi chefs as to my palette(my fish taste tolerance and I do not like rice). I'm clearly high maintenance!!! So YES It happened. It's like finding your 'drink order' at Starbucks! I consulted with a very kind and funny handsome young sushi chef ' Kevin' aka Joomin shhhh its a Pic.'s to follow of my new roll... I feel like I traveled in time and went to Japan and got my own private chef. It's the Hamachi Taki roll and I was confused about what it meant from seared just my normal Hamachi yellowtail. He explained it in detail and he was so kind as to give me three of one and three of the other it's a six year-old y'all and I feel like it was a feast! Delicious. Perfect. Fresh . Generous. Open Monday thru Sunday 12-9pm. Korean owned. There were multiple tables available and we were immediately seated. No plate settings on our table, had to ask for them once food arrived. How can you bring food to the table and not notice there's nothing to eat with for all the guests. $25 sashimi sampler, $38 sushi sampler. Happy hour 3-6p M-F. Miso soup had a strong plastic smell that came from the soup itself. Felt unsafe to eat. Highly recommend you avoid it. The rainbow roll and salmon roll were ok. Ordered an additional roll and it never came. Inquired with the server and she asked if we ordered. Yes we ordered with you earlier. So she went and added it to the computer so we had to wait a while longer. Sushi comes out pretty quick though. We were still ordering, she took my plate away and never brought a new one. She obviously knew we were still eating since she just placed the order for another roll herself. I had to ask for another plate. Service is very poor here. Inattentive, terrible, don't know how to resolve issues. Beef combo plate was ok. Tempura was good. Very disappointing meal. Lack service etiquette. Food is mediocre, many other better sushi spots around to visit instead. They do cater to frequent fliers / residents of the area, as they greet them with hugs and kind words. Building is currently under construction, but does not affect dining area.

Restaurants at the Ritz Laguna Niguel were all booked up so we ventured close by to Dana Kai. Quick highlights: Staff were polite and didn't rush us, even though it was 40 mins to closing Service was quick Sushi tasted fresh Lots of parking Price was standard and what you would expect for sushi (we got 3 different rolls) Restaurant was clean Overall, it was a good choice for the night!

The food is really good and the 4 item lunch combo is definitely a good deal at $22. I give 4 stars and not 5 because every single staff person was MANIC and rushing us (there really weren't very many customers so it was by no means a mad house). For example, when we were filling out our order on the sheet of paper, the waitress kept coming back saying "are you done are you done" as we were clearly still filling it out. That is just one example. But they need to slow down and take a deep breath. They also seemed irritated that we didn't order any alcohol? Lol it was just a weird energy and stressed us out as if they were timing us the whole time we were there (a whopping 45ish minutes for lunch) Foods bomb but staff needs to MELLOW out.

Dana Kai is a nice Sushi Spot in Dana Point. I had some cucumber salad and wine to start off before getting some cucumber and avocado rolls with spicy Mayo. Everything was very tasty! My overall meal didn't cost so much due to the type of sushi I ordered. The parking is somewhat big so parking shouldn't be an issue. The service was decent, but could be slightly better in regards to being attentive but overall good.

Love how they use large platters with Sushi orders. Always great deals with happy hour or daily specials, generous portions and good customer Service make this a good Sushi spot in Monarch beach area. Phenomenal! This was my first time dining here and I loved my experience eating here today. We had the mixed tempura, spicy poke bowl (forgot to take a picture), 15 sashimi combo, Daniel special, green mussels, and Godzilla roll among 3 people. Everything was so good and fresh! I don't think I've tried anything like the daniel special elsewhere but it was so so good! The flavors were on point. I forgot to take a pic but the spicy pike bowl had a lot of fish in it and did not skimp out which I highly highly appreciated. In terms of covid safety procedures, everything seemed super safe! All employees were taking safety precautions, and they take your temperature at the door. The ladies bathroom was also very clean. They've started indoor dining at 25% capacity and had the doors open so that the air could flow in and out which is also good. Service was also wonderful. Our server Nicole was stellar!--very nice and accomodating. She also gave us recommendations when we asked what a good roll with eel would be (her recommendation, Godzilla was very good. The shrimp tempura, the eel, avocado, and the sauce were tied together very nicely.) Wish I lived closer so that I could come more often but I'll definitely be back for more!! read more

Came in to eat here for the 3rd time. It used to be great but today it was disappointing. I saw the waitresses cleaning tables, picking up trash with gloved hands that they came and served me my food. Basically contaminating all food given to people. Also, I asked for sauce and they wanted to charge me extra. The sushi was not as good as well. There are plenty nice sushi places will be going elsewhere read more

We go there almost everyday and order something new, because they have such an expansive menu. Great outdoor-dining area that is dog friendly! We decided to take a detour and stop here on our way to San Diego. The white blonde roll was buttery and citrusy. Oh so good. We also had a baked roll with shrimp and scallops. I usually hate baked rolls but wanted to take the plate away from my husband so I could consume every last bite myself. Also ordered the chicken udon for my kids. The broth was extremely flavorful. My kids slurped up the bowl. My only complaint was that our sushi chef took his time preparing each meal. But it was totally worth the wait. The restaurant is in a mini mall so not a good place to romance someone but if your partner enjoys good sushi... Or if you have been married long enough to know that romance does not have to rely on ambience then I say go for it!!! read more

Location is nice, we always find a parking spot. Their sushi rolls are tasty. Friendly staff, from the hostess, waitress and the chefs. You can sit at their bar or enjoy a quiet meal on a table. Good food. Fish served as sushi needs to be at cold temperature for the turn over rate reasons but this place serves sushi test as room temperature because they could ensure the freshness of the fish. This tells you how good the quality is. Ambiance is thought to be very noisy over the phone when I tried to reserve but pleasantly surprised when I arrived at the site. It is quite frankly quiet enough to have decent conversation with my group. Service was spot on for my undying zeal towards the search for quality food. They have meet my expectations above and beyond. I highly recommend this place. A hidden gem that will satisfy your palate as well as your overall experience for fine dining for sushi. Definitely will be coming back for more. read more

We have been eating at Dana Kai for many years. But, my last two experience were really bad. One time we ordered a Ell Rice, they did not serve for long time till we asked then they bring a cold Ell Rice, so we sent it back. Last time (few weeks ago) we ordered a Yellow tail Sashimi - it was not fresh (even fish meat color changed)we sent back and they took off the bill. However, after look closely on the bill, they charged additional $ 25, so we asked them what is the charge. The waitress kind panic and said it was a mistakes. From my last two experience, something went wrong in this restaurant. It is a Korean managed Japanese restaurant, my guess may be changed ownerships. With the frustration and been cheated, we have decided not to go back anymore. read more

Local joint five stars for outstanding dishes very beautiful and artistic with clean light tasting and fresh sashimi, not heavy on rice or sauces very very worth the trip! Try the hot and cold Saki too! We went off yelp and ordered the popular items like tuna lover (spicy tuna roll covered in tuna sashimi with tuna chunk poke with mixed greens and vinegar salad on top soo delish! We tried several others including the recommended soy wrapped rolls, Rainbow spicy tuna, Tristan, spicy jalapeño over yellow tail sashimi over shrimp and tuna tempura inside roll to crunch tofu sushi rolls and soo many more. Two negatives were miso soup arrived kind of cold and not as savory a bit watered down. Zero music the ambience felt awkward with customers all around. Great family or date joint clean and great friendly staff and bussers. Great experience great food five stars all around we'll be back! read more

Party of four was seated right away at 1pm on a Saturday. Pretty solid place if you're into special rolls, there's good variety. I personally liked the salmon killer and Baja yellowtail the most. Some rolls are a little too saucy for me (tiger roll) but fish quality is decent for the price. read more

I've eaten her a few times for dining on the patio and take out. It's a great Japanese restaurant. The last time I ate here my mother ordered the sashimi lunch and my wife and I both ordered the sushi lunch. They were excellent meals. The lunch meals come with miso soup and salad, and the sashimi meal with rice on top of the miso soup and salad. The sushi and sashimi were very fresh and perfectly prepared. The salad was a good size and the miso soup great tasting and a generous portion. The service is friendly and efficient. The outdoor patio is a pleasant place for a meal. It's one of my family's go to Japanese restaurants! We'll be back soon! read more

Great local spot and literally the best sushi you'll find for miles. have a very large sushi bar with lots of personal chefs that are always fun and engaging. There's also a regular fairly good-sized dining room for those not wanting to sit at the sushi bar. There is also a little known specials menu that features a bunch of great stuff... and all you have to do is ask for it. read more

Food was good. Service wasnt great, my party was waiting for around half an hour for our food, 15 minutes for our check. Little expensive for quality of the food (which was great, but nonetheless). Advertise on their menu that 20% gratuity minimum for a party of 6, mine had 5 members and were asked to pay. Server said it was an outdated menu, but still had us pay the 20%. read more

I've come here multiple times, twice with my mom and once with my friend. Food is delicious but not worth it when it comes to their customer service. They served food to people who arrived after us and were not welcoming at all which made us feel that they preferred certain people over others. We had to question when our food was coming out multiple times and they gave little to no response. Once we left that night, we were the only ones to not recieve a goodbye when every other customer got a nice shoutted "goodbye!" I just want to give them that credit. The oyster shooter was strong, in a good way. Tasty! The duck fat fries were nice and crispy. It came with a rich truffle aioli. The steamed clams were good, but the slice of bread they gave us with it was burnt to an inedible level. I also would have liked a spoon to sip that garlic white wine and butter liquid. Clams were fresh. The seafood poke came with crispy wonton chips. It was decent. After our original order we decided we wanted to finish off with somethings small, so we got the Clam Chowder ($14). I would have liked it a smidge thicker in texture but the taste and the quality of ingredients are on point. I get the bacon essence and a good amount of clams in the soup too. Kahani, the club lounge, and the Marketplace all delivered exactly what you expect from a hotel at this level: attentive, well-trained staff, seamless service, and a clear understanding of hospitality standards. That's why I've never focused on smaller issues before -- they didn't outweigh the overall quality of the stay. Unfortunately, Raya has now been the exception twice. The first time, back in January, the food quality wasn't on point-I ordered the blackened tuna tacos and they were completely inedible. I didn't complain or send them back -- I simply left it at that. Today was service from one particular server Taylor. I had just come down from the club lounge and remembered that I had a complimentary voucher given at check-in, which didn't specify what it covered on it. I first asked at the lobby bar and no one was able to provide a clear answer, so I went next door to Raya and asked again before ordering. The hostess told me I could choose anything and even recommended the skirt steak. She was kind and friendly. Taylor took my order, and I reasonably assumed there had been communication between staff. So I spent some time ordering and waiting and when my food arrived since I asked for a to go order, I grabbed the bag, tipped, and left. Then Taylor ran after me at the hotel entrance asking how I planned to pay -- in front of other guests. It was an extremely uncomfortable and bizarre situation. I didn't realize what has happened I was just handed the bill and I put my room number and name down. I was then told the voucher only covered guacamole, which directly contradicted what I had been told prior to ordering. As a result, I wasted approximately 40 minutes of my time, I was simply trying to head to the beach before departing, and instead found myself dealing with a situation that should have been handled internally and discreetly. When I handed the food back and said I did not want it, the response was "ok, I'll toss it," followed by no acknowledgment, no apology, and no effort to resolve the situation. At this point, this is no longer an isolated incident. For a restaurant positioned as fine dining, the lack of internal communication, consistency, and basic guest handling is surprising -- especially when every other outlet on the property demonstrates a significantly higher standard. Raya was the only part of the experience that felt misaligned with the rest of the hotel -- and unfortunately, it's the last impression I'm leaving with.

The arugula, radicchio, Marcona almonds, and prosciutto all came together really well. I know it sounds simple, but it was one of the highlights for me. We also tried two pies: the Umami Mushroom ($24), which was good and clearly had a lot of thought behind it, and the Classic Pepperoni ($23), which was awesome. The pasta was just a little more al dente than I prefer, but other than that, no complaints. The tuna poke stack with the wonton chips was so refreshing and full of flavor. The fish and chips tasted incredibly fresh with the perfect amount of seasoning, and the tartar sauce tied everything together. Safe to say there weren't any leftovers!

this restaurant is alright good service but, definitely some concerns when it comes to the staff & chefs at this restaurant. I saw a bunch of them just laying around sitting doing nothing while talking about how much they don't want to be there but, they need money. The food was not so good not really worth the money you pay. I also saw one of the male employee's doing something XXX rated behind the kitchen counter while talking with guests at the sushi bar. They also seem to have a roach problem but, don't really care but, instead they offer to cook it in anyway any style you want! I added in a photo of how they catch the roaches. the smoking lounge is alright beautiful oriental atmosphere with a nice waiter style service (they bring you traditional oriental snacks, a nice selection of ganja, speciality rolls, cream pies). When I arrived on a Saturday afternoon for my regular Sashimi Saturday, it was not packed at all, and I was pleased to see that there was both indoor and outdoor seating available. The indoor seating had tall ceilings, and there were plenty of tables. Upon looking at the menu, I noticed that the rolls were a bit on the expensive side and seemed to be doused in sauce. Despite this, I decided to try 6 rolls to split between four people, and I was happy to find that they were huge. Even the plain standard rolls had a generous amount of fish inside, which definitely explained the price. While the price was a bit steep, the amount of fish inside each roll left me feeling satisfied. If you're looking for a casual sushi spot with generous portions, Dana Kai Sushi is definitely worth checking out. read more

Here we go again! Tried a new spot over the weekend and this place is not worth the hype it used to be. Service was alright but, the waitress that was helping me out was extremely pushy when it came towards the tip she said she really wanted a 22% and she'll do anything she can to make sure she get's the 22% tip. Food was alright - the edamame was alright, the crispy rice spicy tuna as mediocre at best and chicken teriyaki was extremely dry Even the chef Simon Wicked came out during my meal and said chicken should be dry. I brought home my leftovers and even my dog doisy berry wouldn't even touch it. If you want good service & food I'd recommend Lemon Life in Ladera Ranch or Yuzu Japanese Kitchen & Bar you not only get way better service but, also you get way better food for the price. read more

My sister and I visited this restaurant, conveniently located near Ocean Ranch, where we were to catch a movie. I chose the sushi and tempura box, while my sister selected the 4-choice special. The food, service, vibes, EVERYTHING at Dana Kai was excellent! There was surprising an incredible variety of vegan options, in all sections of the menu. Everyone we interacted with was extremely friendly and attentive--we were served immediately for lunch on a Saturday. The food came out very quickly, and we were well-attended to the whole time. The vegan rolls were the highlight because they were composed with unique combinations of ingredients, not just the basic vegetables typical of veggie rolls served elsewhere. Love how this place is right down the street! Not only from my house but also from the beach and you would assume a sushi restaurant already being pricey and the location would make it pricier but definitely worth it for the food. You have the option to sit at a table or at the sushi bar where you get to watch first hand your meal being prepared. Wow! We went here last night because there is not one good place in San Clemente and loved it. The food is a bit expensive, but the quality of sushi is so much better then anything you can find over there, that it was worth driving there. I recommend the dragon roll and the spicy tuna. Being fairly new to Dana Point and south OC, I have tried a number of sushi places. Dana Kai is my favorite so far. The chefs are great, very friendly and high quality sushi. My husband and I love this place! There is never a big crowd so we always are served pretty fast. The rolls are good and I highly suggest the Japanese burrito! Always a fun spot for a date night. The waitresses are very nice too which is not always common at sushi restaurants. read more
