I've been waiting to try this place after seeing great reviews online. The servers were so warm and welcoming. They quickly got our drink order and were very helpful. I sat at the sushi bar. I started with the seaweed salad. It was sweet and crunchy. So comforting. Then I ordered the sashimi sampler. The price is awesome for what you get. Mine came with snapper (my fav), scallop (SO BUTTERY), albacore (mild), bluefin tuna w/ uni (bursting with flavor), yellowtail w/ jalapeno (classic), and salmon (the ikura was a great touch.) Lastly I ordered the seared tuna. The smoky flavor is so much fun. I've always wanted to try seared sushi, I had no idea it was so good. I'm definitely ordering a searing option every time for now on.

I stopped in here to get a bite of sushi I was starving after sitting in traffic. I ordered the bluefin tuna sushi and the scallop sushi. I sat outside enjoying the sunshine of the parking lot. I also had a cucumber salad with a lot of red ginger.

Our favorite neighborhood date night restaurant. Dana Kai located off Niguel and Camino Del Avion. Parking is a little tricky. Great place to come for some sushi, drinks and my husband's favorite two item combo. Staff is friendly and with great service. Next time you come to Dana Point/ Laguna Niguel stop by and give them a try.

Ok wait! I'm overwhelmed in the Best way ... I walked in on a sunny Sunday to be delighted to experience a Clean, High Vibe Atmosphere and finally a great Ventilation system! Legit! Dana Kai is sooo impressive!!! AND even a I just found my Dream roll. I am constantly trying to communicate with sushi chefs as to my palette(my fish taste tolerance and I do not like rice). I'm clearly high maintenance!!! So YES It happened. It's like finding your 'drink order' at Starbucks! I consulted with a very kind and funny handsome young sushi chef ' Kevin' aka Joomin shhhh its a Pic.'s to follow of my new roll... I feel like I traveled in time and went to Japan and got my own private chef. It's the Hamachi Taki roll and I was confused about what it meant from seared just my normal Hamachi yellowtail. He explained it in detail and he was so kind as to give me three of one and three of the other it's a six year-old y'all and I feel like it was a feast! Delicious. Perfect. Fresh . Generous. Open Monday thru Sunday 12-9pm. Korean owned. There were multiple tables available and we were immediately seated. No plate settings on our table, had to ask for them once food arrived. How can you bring food to the table and not notice there's nothing to eat with for all the guests. $25 sashimi sampler, $38 sushi sampler. Happy hour 3-6p M-F. Miso soup had a strong plastic smell that came from the soup itself. Felt unsafe to eat. Highly recommend you avoid it. The rainbow roll and salmon roll were ok. Ordered an additional roll and it never came. Inquired with the server and she asked if we ordered. Yes we ordered with you earlier. So she went and added it to the computer so we had to wait a while longer. Sushi comes out pretty quick though. We were still ordering, she took my plate away and never brought a new one. She obviously knew we were still eating since she just placed the order for another roll herself. I had to ask for another plate. Service is very poor here. Inattentive, terrible, don't know how to resolve issues. Beef combo plate was ok. Tempura was good. Very disappointing meal. Lack service etiquette. Food is mediocre, many other better sushi spots around to visit instead. They do cater to frequent fliers / residents of the area, as they greet them with hugs and kind words. Building is currently under construction, but does not affect dining area.

Restaurants at the Ritz Laguna Niguel were all booked up so we ventured close by to Dana Kai. Quick highlights: Staff were polite and didn't rush us, even though it was 40 mins to closing Service was quick Sushi tasted fresh Lots of parking Price was standard and what you would expect for sushi (we got 3 different rolls) Restaurant was clean Overall, it was a good choice for the night!

Dana Kai is a nice Sushi Spot in Dana Point. I had some cucumber salad and wine to start off before getting some cucumber and avocado rolls with spicy Mayo. Everything was very tasty! My overall meal didn't cost so much due to the type of sushi I ordered. The parking is somewhat big so parking shouldn't be an issue. The service was decent, but could be slightly better in regards to being attentive but overall good.

The food is really good and the 4 item lunch combo is definitely a good deal at $22. I give 4 stars and not 5 because every single staff person was MANIC and rushing us (there really weren't very many customers so it was by no means a mad house). For example, when we were filling out our order on the sheet of paper, the waitress kept coming back saying "are you done are you done" as we were clearly still filling it out. That is just one example. But they need to slow down and take a deep breath. They also seemed irritated that we didn't order any alcohol? Lol it was just a weird energy and stressed us out as if they were timing us the whole time we were there (a whopping 45ish minutes for lunch) Foods bomb but staff needs to MELLOW out.

Dana Kai has some of the freshest sushi. The fish is tender and perfectly prepared. Some of the rolls we always order are the Sashimi Roll and the spicy rainbow roll. Both are always delicious. This place is doing a great job with COVID as well. read more

This is our absolute favorite sushi spot! The sushi is high quality and their menu is huge! We love the crispy rice, especially since you can't find that everywhere. Picked up food tonight for 3 people. $80 worth of food, and only one things was edible. The Special Eel Roll was great. The Spicy Tuna Hand roll was over the top spicy. Did the bottle of pepper spill into the mixture? WOW! Not edible. The Spicy Poke roll was also WAY WAY too spicy..inedible. Baked scallop roll was just OK.. Kind of cheesy mac and cheese kind of thing with over-cooked baby scallops over a Cal. roll. Eh. Would not order from here again, sorry. read more

I was craving Sushi and knew there was no other place to go then Dana Kai! Our server, Nicole, was hilarious and made our night more than memorable. She was funny, attentive and I think I have a slight crush on her! LOL The food is Super Fresh and literally melts in your mouth. After we discovered Dana Kai we went on a mission to find our go to dishes when we just don't want to make a decision. They are the Shrimp Tempura and Gyu Don ( a rice bowl with a meat on top ) so yummy as is the Miso Soup Crispy Rice and the Sushi and Rolls. We go there often and always find a table when we show up. They have inside and outside seating and appear to be a popular restaurant in the area, we can see why. read more

Great choice for sushi! The service was excellent, the food was great, the drinks were flowing and everything was well priced. Not the cheapest sushi joint out there, but I generally avoid those places anyways. You get what you pay for. My girlfriend and I went last night and got 2 specialty rolls, one cut roll, 2 miso soups, spicy edamame (which was excellent btw), sake, large beer, and 2 oyster shooters. Total came out to $84 after tax. Yes, I would recommend DanaKai Sushi. Get the spicy edamame and some sake to start. read more

Went for lunch today with a friend. We were greeted and seated quickly and there was only one other group there when we arrived. Rad ambiance inside and felt classy. We quickly ordered and got our food but then the server apparently forgot about us. We wanted to order another drink and more sushi but she was too busy speaking with the other server and chefs to look our way. This lasted for 40 minutes. Food was amazing. The lunch specials were affordable ($13.95 for salad, miso soup, and your choice of three mini rolls). I really want to give this place 4-5 stars but honestly the service sucked and it left a sour taste in my mouth- even after such good food. read more

Visiting Dana Point and so thankful we found Dana Kai. Some of the freshest and most creative rolls we've had anywhere. Highly recommend the Hamaki Takaki roll as well as the Salmon Killer (both on the no-rice menu). Service also outstanding. Dana Kai is no joke my FAVORITE (!!) sushi restaurant to date. I was truly blown away by their quality of sushi (and I live near Sugarfish so that's saying a lot) and could probably eat the Jeff's Special for days. My family and I came to eat on Sunday for lunch. Was not busy at all, our food took quite awhile. And on top of that a few things were incorrect . To say the least of that, our server had charged us different amounts for two cards we provided... we communicated with the server that we have a receipt for the charge we thought we were billed but shows we were billed another amount on top of that immediately on our statement one for the correct amount and another charge on top of that. The Server Jenny was not communicating that she made a mistake until we noticed ourselves but instead insisted that what were talking about was just gibberish. Yet saying "not a problem" Didn't even apologize for the mistake even if it was an accident charge. And kept saying "no problem just call back in an hour if it's still there". I've been in this industry where if there was a minor mistake with a bill charge just be honest ... We waited politely and even let time pass. I called as she told us and again I was ignored as they talk in another language trying to figure out what to say as I was on the phone just trying to contact some sort of supervisor to help with a proper resolution. They told me no manager was in that night and that Tuesday there will be one.. and today I call again and they say he is not there ? I have been trying to contact a manager as this was not the way to handle the situation at all.. very disappointed will be the first and last time here. So not professional, terrible communication and not at all how you should treat a paying customer. read more

The food at Dana Kai must be good - all the servers and most of the sushi chefs were guzzling beer, and eating like it was their last meal, while serving customers. One of the servers saw me staring in disbelief and immediately hid her beer under the counter. Too bad she couldn't stop chewing. Why would good restaurants be nearly empty at 8 pm on a Saturday night? Easy answer - because they are not well managed. As for the quality of the sushi - well, if it's good enough for the employees it's good enough for me! read more

We love Dana Kai! The food is delicious and well presented, always fresh and the best quality sushi. One of our favorites are the oysters, prepared in the shell with sake and masago. The tempura is crisp and tasty. We have tried several different kinds of carpaccio, it always comes looks lovely and is always very tasty. The servers take great care of us, especially Ivon and Maricruz! Always checking to make sure our tea is hot and that our food is coming out on time. The restaurant is small enough that you hear every exchange and when our server went back to give our order the two chefs spoke to each other in Spanish and then to the server in english. My family and I are filipino but unfortunately for the chefs in the back I do understand Spanish and all I will say is that they were definitely giving our server a hard time. I try my best to be very gracious because you never know what someone is going through but I will stay true to my experience and what I witnessed. I personally do not condone any bullying and so I really did not appreciate the way they were treating our server or the effect it had on our dining experience. Won't be returning to this location.

We learned that the kitchen is nut free (always double check as this could change), which was amazing since our son has a severe nut allergy. He was so excited to learn this as he can be limited at other places due to cross contamination or the wrong oils. Then when the food came out and it was delicious - it sealed the deal. It is now in the top of our list of places to go. The kids cheeseburger is good size and not a smaller version as some places do. The chicken tenders were panko crusted which was so crunchy. My husband and I shared the smoked carrot and chicken tacos and we enjoyed them both. The beer was also very good with my husband and I each trying a different kind - an IPA and a Pale Ale. We are so glad we finally stopped in and so should you!

I saw a bunch of them just laying around sitting doing nothing while talking about how much they don't want to be there but, they need money. When I arrived on a Saturday afternoon for my regular Sashimi Saturday, it was not packed at all, and I was pleased to see that there was both indoor and outdoor seating available. The indoor seating had tall ceilings, and there were plenty of tables. Upon looking at the menu, I noticed that the rolls were a bit on the expensive side and seemed to be doused in sauce. Despite this, I decided to try 6 rolls to split between four people, and I was happy to find that they were huge. Even the plain standard rolls had a generous amount of fish inside, which definitely explained the price. While the price was a bit steep, the amount of fish inside each roll left me feeling satisfied. If you're looking for a casual sushi spot with generous portions, Dana Kai Sushi is definitely worth checking out. read more

Here we go again! Tried a new spot over the weekend and this place is not worth the hype it used to be. Service was alright but, the waitress that was helping me out was extremely pushy when it came towards the tip she said she really wanted a 22% and she'll do anything she can to make sure she get's the 22% tip. Food was alright - the edamame was alright, the crispy rice spicy tuna as mediocre at best and chicken teriyaki was extremely dry Even the chef Simon Wicked came out during my meal and said chicken should be dry. I brought home my leftovers and even my dog doisy berry wouldn't even touch it. If you want good service & food I'd recommend Lemon Life in Ladera Ranch or Yuzu Japanese Kitchen & Bar you not only get way better service but, also you get way better food for the price. read more

The food, service, vibes, EVERYTHING at Dana Kai was excellent! There was surprising an incredible variety of vegan options, in all sections of the menu. Everyone we interacted with was extremely friendly and attentive--we were served immediately for lunch on a Saturday. The food came out very quickly, and we were well-attended to the whole time. The vegan rolls were the highlight because they were composed with unique combinations of ingredients, not just the basic vegetables typical of veggie rolls served elsewhere. I had an amazing experience at this sushi restaurant! From the moment I walked in, the staff made me feel welcome with their warm, attentive service. Love how this place is right down the street! Not only from my house but also from the beach and you would assume a sushi restaurant already being pricey and the location would make it pricier but definitely worth it for the food. You have the option to sit at a table or at the sushi bar where you get to watch first hand your meal being prepared. Wow! We went here last night because there is not one good place in San Clemente and loved it. The food is a bit expensive, but the quality of sushi is so much better then anything you can find over there, that it was worth driving there. I recommend the dragon roll and the spicy tuna. Being fairly new to Dana Point and south OC, I have tried a number of sushi places. Dana Kai is my favorite so far. The chefs are great, very friendly and high quality sushi. Love the burrito, the tuna boat and the chef specials. Nice location and a nice roomy space. My new regular spot. Excellent sushi! read more

My husband and I love this place! There is never a big crowd so we always are served pretty fast. The rolls are good and I highly suggest the Japanese burrito! Always a fun spot for a date night. The waitresses are very nice too which is not always common at sushi restaurants. read more

It wasn't busy this early, but it started to get busier after 5:30pm. We started out with the four piece jalapeno poppers ($10). These were very good. The jalapenos were crisp, stuffed with cream cheese, with two sauces drizzled on top. I think there was also a little spicy tuna on top. Next, we ordered a California roll ($8) and a spicy tuna roll ($9). These were good standard rolls with fresh ingredients, and reasonably priced, especially for the area. They have a menu of chef's special rolls which sounded good, and we decided to try the Pink Lady (Inside: Shrimp, Crab, Spicy Tuna, Avocado, Outside: Salmon, Jalapeno, Lemon, Soy Paper, Mustard Ponzu, $20). It might seem a little expensive, but it a roll with no rice. It was excellent, and well worth the money. If you love citrus like I do, you have to try it. I have never had pink lemon before. It's still tart but sweeter than a yellow lemon and less sweet than a Meyer lemon. Our server was friendly, and our food arrived promptly. We would return again when in the area. The only downside is that the restaurant is small. If the dining room is full, you may have to wait a while to be seated.
