I've had Dan Cobley shape two boards for me now. One is a high-performance rounded-pin 6'6" hybrid and the other is a similar step-up version of the same. The 6'6" is my go to board at this point. It's both loose and fast. Easy to paddle for this oldish guy. Holds well on big bottom turns. A great board and great looking, with smooth, even sexy lines. The 7'0" step-up hasn't hit the water yet but it looks great. I'll report back after my first big wave session. The coolest thing about Dan as a shaper is that he really listens to you and will spend some time talking with you about your surfing and goals. Dan is my go-to shaper for anything that I need. He shaped my first board from Becker, but the second one I had a chance to sit down and chat with him at his shop. We discussed some designs based on where I plan on surfing, my current ability (infrequency leads to less paddle strength), and how I surf (cruise rather than rip). Dan worked pretty quickly, too. Had DanC shape me a board a lot like the channel islands dumpster diver. Its fast and great for the small waves of the south bay, and can get pretty good hold in bigger hollow waves as well. The board was finished when he promised and I even got a little tour of the shop when I picked it up. Will definitely get another board shaped by DanC when the time comes. read more

I've had friends refer me to Dan and now I've gotten two boards shaped from him and will continue to get more. He's made me a 6'1 and just put an order in for a 6'0. His boards rip. He knows the South Bay and San Diego's waves well and can make you the best stick for this area and he will spend a good amount of time talking to you and making sure you get what you wants. He doesn't just use some machine to pop out whatever. He shapes boards by hand and will start right in front of you so you have an idea of what your getting. his longboards are ok but his shortboards suck.no creativity just copies other well known shapers boards.if your lucky he will try to impress you with a shaping appointment where he will put on some classical music and blow thru your board like he has been doing this for 25 years.meanwhile not taking any measurements just shaping by eye.give me a break al merrick.if it was not for becker he would be doing this for a hobby.give it up and let the mexican shape he does a much better job and measures his boards. read more
