This was my fourth stop on the Solvang bakery trail in search of the perfect Owl Eye. An owl eye is a shortbread cookie with a piped marzipan topping and a bit of fruit preserve in the center, in the case of Danish Mill, it's strawberry. Ate it in the car yesterday, so no photo. It was good. The shortbread was crisp and the marzipan very light. Strawberry flavor was reasonably pronounced. The GREAT thing about his place is that the bakery case is huge and they had an enormous variety. My wife got a chocolate covered pastry with an almond cake base, and a mocha cream pastry. She was very happy! Ambiance/Cleanliness-good enough! 3 stars Service-the ladies were wonderful! I married in to a family of first generation Danish immigrants, so Solvang is a home away from home. The staff at this bakery is really great and helpful. They take good care of seated guests along with those who are just grabbing some danishes. I highly recommend the poppy seed and sesame seed hard rolls with Havarti cheese and a hot chocolate! The Almond Kringle was definitely my fav out of the two items! Crispy and flakey on the outside and moist and soft on the inside. The bakery was pretty busy when we stopped by, but the line moved in a timely manner. The animatronic dolls at the store front are what really caught my eye. There are a variety of other pastries that I would love to try soon! read more

You can't visit Solvang and miss out on all the incredible dessert opportunities. You just can't. The delightful aromas suffocate your senses and threaten to take you hostage. Unless, you're on a crazy diet or simply blind to the delicious sinful delights around you. It's hard to resist and trust me, we had no intentions of doing so. We fully expected to gain an extra 10 pounds and were happy doing so. Dieting is for the new year. We partook in the sprinkled butter cookie, the macaroon, a cinnamon crisp, a lemon filled danish, and a glazed apple danish. Yum! They were wonderfully delicious but the butter cookie didn't hold any memorable and remarkable qualities so it likely won't be revisited again. It's a huge plus that you can take some cookie dough home with you but unfortunately it wouldn't have made the 3 hour trek back to Orange County. The mail order is another nice touch. read more

RUDE, DISCRIMINATORY, and LIARS. I'm steaming hot right now! Unfortunately, I have to echo some of the other comments here about the rude customer service and the prefectural treatment they show some other customers, but not others. I spent $60 on pastries at 4:20pm on a Tuesday. When I asked for some forks so that my family of three could enjoy the pastries we had just purchased. The employee said that they were not allowing people to eat at the tables anymore because they are closing now. So, my family ate our pastries outside on a bench. We strolled around for 20 minutes (now 4:40pm) and noticed that the bakery now had two other parties eating inside on the tables. I went inside and spoke to the same employee and she said they allow people to just sit as long as they aren't eating. Of course I'm not an idiot and know what eating looks like. Her supervisor interjected and backed the employee. Don't be fooled by the cool mannequins in the front window. This bakery is rude, disrespectful, and lie to paying customers. I've noticed this place only gives attention to certain specific customers, those who do not share their light complexion gets ignored and given dirty looks by a man behind the counter. My husband, who entered into this interracial marriage and matched the fair skinned similarities as the staff, was greeted coldly and ignored as well. Our mixed child was excited and wanted to try all the colorful pastries, those we were willing to purchase, but we were skipped over again and again, having only customers who were of the more favorable complexion that came in after us, to be given immediate attention over us- Their voice tones went higher, smiles baring "pearly whites," and met with direct eye contact. We also saw them doing this with a number of other families who didn't meet the skin tone criteria. It's a shame but we ended up going with the bakery down the street with the line that went way past the door anyways. We were ready for pricey but my one sweet for the day wasted on a bear claw. Dry with a couple of almonds bites... very little flavor. Found the same in the bucket of cookies. The bread they had were amazing, very fresh, very tasty and perfect taste. We got the whole loaf of jalapeño cheese bread and just couldn't stop eating. They had more variety of pastries and bread, we tried some but don't remember the name. The coffee was okay. The place had really good decorations. I am reducing the star only due to the waitress serving there, really rude to speak with and not at all welcoming, as if they were doing me a favor by serving. Their bakery section has a mouth watering array of cute sweets, like chocolate meringue swirls named "the Matterhorn." Grab a couple of baked goods on the go - it gets pretty crowded though, so you might have to wait. 3 stars because we made the mistake of eating lunch here too. The food was pretty OK - I would definitely head somewhere else for food. The beef stew in a bread bowl was flavourless, but at least the beef was tender. The roast beef sandwich was actually really good, but the split pea soup tasted a bit like baby food. The salad was a very run of the mill iceberg mix. Worse was that the food was all very lukewarm, and came out almost immediately after we ordered it - it can't have been made to order. We stopped here late in the evening (they were open much later than most bakeries in Solvang) for coffee, hot cocoa, and some little treats. Service was very quick, the staff was friendly, and it was cute and clean. More importantly they offer a mini mountain of deliciousness called a "Matterhorn". If you like chocolate and almonds don't even look in the case, just order a Matterhorn. Basing this rating solely on the chocolate dipped marzipan cookies and princess cake... they are the BEST desserts I've ever had!!! I'm a huge fan of princess cake and have had them all over the world. Yours comes really close to one I had in Stockholm. Layers of whipped cream, custard and the delicious cake filled with raspberry filling. Wow. The marzipan cookie was also memorable - cookie exterior and delicious almond paste. What a dream. DO NOT BUY THE DOG TREATS!!!!!!! Went early on a Sunday morning and purchased some pastries: Chocolate croissants, apple fritter, coffee cake and ALL of them did not taste fresh. They tasted very stale. Days stale. In addition, we purchased their dog treats for our dogs. Our dogs only ate their regular schedule food in the previous days. The day we gave them the treats BOTH dogs got VERY sick and they never get sick, let alone both of them sick. For them both to be sick we knew it was the cookies we purchased from this bakery. I was very disappointed with this bakery. I was told prior to visiting that real butter was not used in their baking. I believe that person was 100% correct, not sure what the taste was, but it wasn't butter. We got a drink which was okay plus 4 other sweets. I went on Sunday Oct 2 2022 around 11:40am 2 older ladies at the counter made it feel as we were a bother, when looking at the cookies in the bucket she assumed I was opening it And announced if you open it you buy it in front of all the customers which is very awkward. We stopped in as they were open late and the case was still pretty full of pastries that looked amazing. Boy we're we wrong! There were three women behind the counter and one appeared a bit older then the other two, and lucky for us she was the nicest one! We ordered 2 mochas and a chocolate eclair and a raspberry pastry. Unfortunately both the drinks and the pastries were underwhelming ! We had a nasty taste in our mouths after eating there. Completely lacked flavor and were just blah! Soooo Yummy!!! Loved the guava danish, raspberry cheese danish, napoleon hat, and almond kringle.

Went up to Solvang with the family this past weekend with no plans on where to eat. Was looking forward to exploring danish food and culture but was a bit underwhelmed after having some dessert here. I tried the raspberry danish and a cream cheese danish. Raspberry one was alright but the cream cheese tasted like I was biting into raw whipped egg. Definitely don't get that. read more
