What a cute and quaint little bakery! I'm honestly sad I visited this town during quarantine because I would have really liked to have the full dine-in experience of cute bakeries like this one, but there is outdoor seating and the weather was nice so it was nice. I ordered a danish (of course) and my mother ordered a croissant. The croissant was alright, nothing too fancy to be honest. My danish was nice and fluffy. I enjoyed it. We also ordered coffee. We came in initially to just check out some things that they had in the bakery case. We ended up finding a number of things that we wanted to try. We asked to have a seat and they quickly managed to put a table together for us. The waitress was so friendly and so accommodating. My little one drew her a picture on her placemat while we were waiting for our drinks and dessert. We had to take advantage of their bucket of cookies deal which was three buckets for $15 each, $45 total. I don't see how we're going to eat 15 dozen cookies but I guess it's manageable somehow. We tried a few dessert samplers. Yum. The one Tartelette that we were hoping that they would have was the chicken and asparagus with a white sauce sprinkled with parsley. We visited and bought items at almost every bakery in Solvang--except this one. We got to the counter where only a couple people were buying items and we stood by the register to pick items right there. Then a crowd of people came in. We were standing right there at the beginning of the line and it would have taken five seconds for one of four staff to listen to us and grab the items we wanted, but they ignored us both and went to other customers, even when we got their attention. On the bright side, they saved us a few hundred unnecessary empty calories and inspired me to write reviews for all the other helpful and courteous bakeries we visited in Solvang (as soon as we finish eating their goods). Someone else might have looked around and thought something prejudicial was going on, but that's not my first assumption. I am writing this under my husband's account. My daughter and I entered the bakery about a half-hour before closing. After waiting in line for a few moments, I asked if the bakery had any gluten-free items. The assistant rolled her eyes at me (as if this was some problematic question) and said NO. I decided to order some items for my family to include both custard-filled eclairs and cream puffs. When I received my receipt, it didn't match what I'd ordered. I simply asked, "What do I have," as the boxes were unmarked. Instead of telling me, the assistant said in a snide manner, "I'll write it out for you." She didn't need to do that. I just needed to know what we had because the receipt did not match my order. Unhappy with my experience, I just assumed let it go. We had our order and I felt like I was supporting local business-even if the workers weren't very friendly. However, as we were leaving, one of the other women stated, "You didn't need to be rude." Excuse me? Asking for the contents of my purchase now amounts to being rude? At that point, my daughter and I felt like the store workers were ganging up on us. I placed the contents of my bag on the counter and returned the purchased items. This was witnessed by my daughter at my side and my husband, who was waiting outside. They alleged that I dropped the bag on the floor. My husband, at the door, heard them. That was an outright lie. This was a very disappointing experience all-around. The only reason we stopped here was because the two other bakeries that DO have gluten-free items were either out of the items we purchased or were closed. Never again. When my family and I walked in we already felt a weird ambiance but we were so excited to try the pastries so we ignored the weird vibes. When we finally reached the place to order the girl who took our or order barely listened and to our first impression was not very friendly but regardless we payed for our pastries and left. I watched this girl try to serve ice cream from a machine that was clearly empty. I've worked at fast food and when an ice cream machine is becoming slow during the serving process you gotta refill it. Did this girl think to do so? No. She proceeded to play around and I watched her make one of the droopiest cones and she was so close to serving that to the family in front of me until her coworker stopped her She then finally got the bright idea to refill the ice cream machine and after like 30 minutes she came back and gave the cone she missed to the family in front of me. Though as she did that she completely ignored me even though I was clearly waiting for her When she was back to the line up area she proceed to once again ignore me and almost started helping some family that came wayyy after me I approached her and asked her if she could get my cone to which she responded "is someone helping you?". At this point my patience had run low so I told her "yeah, you were, remember? You approached me then asked me what I needed then left for 30 minutes while I've been standing here" It finally clicked to her that she forgot about our earlier interaction and she proceeds to go get my cone and then hands it to me and looks so incredibly pissed. I pay and say thank you and leave. She did not care for any thank yous I know the whole time I could've just left but after being there for so long I did not want to leave and feel like I wasted my time. So I stupidly stayed A little note: the girl who served me e needs to refresh on her food handlers permit. She was biting her nails and sticking her fingers all up in her mouth and without washing them she continued working on the cones. You walk in and they have a long display case so you have to walk the whole thing to figure out what you want. They SHOULD take the next person in line, but nope. Danish Mills Bakery is our "Go-To" while in Solvang , considering all the other Bakeries which are pretty much making and baking the same thing. What sets them apart from Solvang Bakery, and Dansk Bangeri Bakery, is the fact that they're baking in small quantities, taking their time , and not mass producing like Olsens and other competitors. They make great danishes with the right amount of filled - fruit, well balanced sweetness ( not overly sweet), and texture with ALL their pastry dough.The cinnamon-rolls which you can get with or w/out raisins are a MUST! ! ! However, if there is a specific item you are looking for, it picks it for you which is how we ended up at the Danish Mill Bakery. When we found ourselves with a free day during our last minute getaway to the Central Coast, we finally made it down to Solvang in search of the Sara Bernhardt macaroon that my sister in law swears by. Wanting to surprise her with this almond treat topped with a chocolate ganache, we found ourselves here on a mild sunny day. This bakery had so much to choose from! There was a line and a bit of a wait so that was enough for me to check it out. They have tons of different types of pastries that it was hard to choose from. I went with single chocolate selections. They were great I recommend the dark chocolate truffle. The prices here were very reasonable, some large loafs were as low as $1.50. A nice little Bakery in the Danish Village that is more modern with their decoration. They have some interesting animated dolls out front that will most likely catch your eye if the window view is clear. We didn't order too much due to stomach constraints, but I had the guava Danish and the guava was on par with the quality of Porto's guava cheese rolls. The pastry portion isn't bad as well and their breads looked quite nice as well. To be noted, their jam filled Danish are more filled than the other bakeries I've visited. DANISH COOKIES When I take a trip to Solvang I like to pick up some famous Danish bakery goods to bring home. I used to like this place then I didn't like how they didn't sound welcoming when they said no dogs allowed inside. Solvang suppose to be a dog friendly town if you don't want dogs inside then put a sign out. I was only getting bakery goods to go that didn't take long to get packaged, paid for and to leave the place. My small dog was in my tote bag too. My friends and I were taking the scenic route up-north and solvang was one of our stops. after stopping by the old danish food farm (aka the fudge farm) my friends and I were seduced my an amazing scent as we followed the path to this AMAZING place... The smell of the fresh baked good seeped through the door as we stood outside, almost drooling in public!! We stood and wait until it was time for the business to open. We looked from afar at the many may many options in front of us! We eventually decided to ask the cashier which ones she would recommended. She was very sweet and helpful, and she pointed us to the cream cheese danishes and we all got one. We sat down, enjoyed it, and enjoyed it so much that we BOUGHT MORE for the road. I have died on gone to baked-good-heaven. This bakery is just so damn cute! There are a few bakeries to choose from in a 2 block radius but this bakery has loads of people walking in and out! Now I know why. Everything here is made fresh. The Danishes are buttery and flaky with just the right amount of jam on the middle. The ladies behind the counter are friendly and quick. They have to be to keep up with the people here. What's great is this is a cafe and a bakery. So if you want a traditional Danish breakfast, they got you!
