This is the best service I've had in years. The people are very friendly and attentive. I walked in without reservations and they accommodated. The cauliflower soup was fantastic! It had depth and wonderfully textured. If all soups were like this it would be hard to say no to them. My main course was too salty to even eat however. I love well seasoned food, but I think the chef double seasoned mine. I tried to eat the rice, but just couldn't get to far. It's unfortunate. Come for the soup though. You won't be disappointed in that or the service. read more

Has success gone to their heads? We had a very good dinner at Dans/Green Hills and we enjoyed ourselves. And it's fortunate that we did, because we were clearly nothing but an obstacle to the servers. Even arriving a few minutes early for our 6 o'clock reservation, the rush from our main server was constant. Wanted our drinks order the minute we sat down, though she was still handing us the wine and cocktails menus! It never let up, even when we told her we needed more time. The restaurant's goal was clearly to get us in and out ASAP. There was a party scheduled for the main dining room, so even in the Garden Room, we must have represented a possible problem to the kitchen? Just a guess. The frontline staffers are all pretty young women but the treatment we got was bad news. The food was still excellent, although I wouldn't recommend the very average Caesar salad. My French-cut chicken was everything I had hoped, and the risotto with it was delicious; the "haricot verts" were not haricot verts, but ordinary fat string beans, and they were acceptable but not what the menu had tantalizingly promised. My wife enjoyed her scallops. Atmosphere was pleasant, the outdoor patio looked pretty overlooking some lawn and green tree-and-shrub border. What could have been a very good dinner was pruned back by the unfriendly service to just a 3-star experience. We were customers who clearly didn't matter to them. My absolute favorite restaurant in the Reading area. No complaints about serving sizes, service or execution by the kitchen. Every steak, duck or lamb I've had here has been cooked well and to requested temp. My wife loves the scallops - so much so it's hard to get to consider anything else on the menu. Sometimes I wish they'd change up the menu a bit, but specials are always available, so it's not hard to find something you'll like. Dining outside is particularly nice and I love to grab a drink at the bar before dinner. The wine list is very nice, especially for an area that doesn't tend to care about that sort of thing. Love the owners. They really care and work hard to keep a well trained staff. Will definitely keep coming back. read more

Simply outstanding food and service! Wife and I ate there Wednesday for a special occasion with friends visiting from Houston, had enjoyed this restaurant together a few years earlier so decided to come back. The food was tremendous, service attentive but not obtrusive, and every item was visually pleasing AND very tasty (which often don't go together)! I had the duck, and was skeptical when the waitress asked how I would like it and suggested it be served pink as the chef preferred. Great call! The meat was very flavorful, perfectly prepared, and I would order it every week if I lived closer. Everyone thoroughly really enjoyed their meals including sweet potato soup and dessert, and all commented that we wished we lived closer so we could dine here more often! read more

We went for my mother in laws birthday. The restaurant is obviously an old home. Charming, but a little awkwardly spaced. They had a newly redone bar room... The interior was nice, but the food was really standout! For appetizers, we got mushroom ravioli in Sherry cream sauce, escargot, and a ceasar salad, butternut squash soup, and the truffled mushroom soup. They provided an amuse bush and a dinner roll. The Cesar salad was probably the best I've ever had. The butternut squash soup was sweet and rich; delightful. The rest of the appetizers were also wonderful. Would recommend any of them! For dinner I had the crab cakes. I don't love asparagus, but even the asparagus was good. Can't wait to go back!! read more

My wife and I first ate at Dans on our anniversary last year. We generally avoid major holidays when restaurants are full, kitchen is busy and the waitstaff is stressed. That worked well until my trusted florist closed, After 50 years of marriage, a thoughtful card, a nice dinner and cut flowers that we don't need to find a place for are perfect. (I did give my Sweetheart a chocolate diamond surrounded by 12 round engagement quality diamonds on that special 50th anniversary. Mother's day we skip eating out; usually I grill something. Without flowers we decided to eat out on perhaps the busiest Sunday a restaurant ever has. When calling Dans to make reservations for our anniversary I complimented them on the food, service and overall pleasant evening we had on Mother's Day. When someone from Dans called back we were thanked for the compliment. We've eaten at many restaurants where we've gotten a complimentary cup of specialty soup, an hors d'oeuvre, delightful just baked bread. Some don't execute the European or French styles with the same panache that the waiters at Dans manage. So we return again and again. The first thing that struck me at Dans was that any seafood dish has no smell whatsoever, as really fresh seafood should. We recommend Dans without reservation... but call to make reservations for that special occasion. (Oops, didn't mean to make this sound like an advertisement.) read more

For this area, this place is out of the park. In fact, we dine in major metropolitan areas around the US, and Dan's was in upper percentile. Good wine selection. Hostess was friendly. Wait staff was informed and attentive. Food runners were pleasent. Location was quaint and the building was nicely done in period fashion. U Intimate atmosphere. Both owners greeted us and were part of the overall excellent delivery. Oh, and extra good eats sent out by the chef; not only yummy, but greatly appreciated! Excellent! Although I had been to Dan's a couple of times when they were in downtown Reading, this was my first visit to since they had moved to their new location. My wife had made a reservation for last evening as she wanted to celebrate my birthday with a special experience. Dan's did not disappoint. First of all, the service was excellent! Our waitress was pleasant, personable, and professional. Her attention, combined with an occasional visit by the owner, made us feel welcomed. The atmosphere was also charming and inviting The star of the evening was the food. My wife selected this restaurant based on recommendations that is was considered to be one of the best in Berks County I have been to many fine restaurants, and I have to say that Dan's did not disappoint. After the chefs complimentary appetizer, as well as French onion soup ( both excellent) I had selected the salmon ( it was a difficult decision, as the strip steak looked very appetizing as well). I made the perfect choice. The salmon, prepared wonderfully, was served with a combination of risotto, kale, asparagus, and complimented with a mustard buerre blanc sauce. It was exquisite! As I stated earlier, I truly enjoy fine dining, but I feel that when a restaurant goes beyond my expectations, they deserve recognition. The only glitch in this dining experience ( as my wife mentioned to me later in the evening) was that, when she made the reservation, she had requested a recognition of my birthday celebration with our desserts (candle, etc) Unfortunately, that never occurred. It did disappoint her a little, but it's not a big deal. If the biggest concern I have is not being recognized for aging another year, I'm ok with it. :) Again, thank you for an wonderful experience. Had the most amazing dinner with friends recently. All eight of us loved every course--a rarity at other establishments. The crab cake starter featuring diced pineapple was to die for and was so good I just wanted another serving of it as an entree and may have to return again soon to do just that. The chef was great about switching out the starch on my pork entree for one featured in another dish and the staff as a whole was attentive ad top-notch, as usual. But what will have me heading back again soon is the sweet potato soup that is garnished with diced apple and sunflower seeds. It was so good we all wanted to lick our bowls clean. read more

We've lived literally down the road from this place for almost a year now and had no idea it even existed until today. I had a delicious risotto followed by duck ravioli followed by a chocolate souffle. All three courses were absolutely perfect. My wife had foie gras followed by rack of lamb followed by bing cherries poached in raspberry sauce over home made almond ice cream. She couldn't stop raving about anything she ate either. Not only was the food out of this world, but the service was the best we've ever had, anywhere, hands down. If you live anywhere remotely near the area, do yourself a favor, and go eat here. Loved it! This restaurant is lovely - low music, quiet, and we could see the snow outside the windows. Our waitress had perfect timing and the food was delicious! I had the seared tuna appetizer and my boyfriend had the crab cake appetizer; we were pleasantly surprised by how big the appetizers were, and both were delicious! For the main course I had the filet mignon/beef and he had the NY strip (both recommended by the waitress) and they were cooked perfectly and could have used a butter knife it was so tender. This was our first time here and it will NOT be our last. Everything was exceptional including our waitress Kathy. The owner is very pleasant and the food was extraordinary! We had the lump crab cake starter and the sweet potato soup. Wow!!!! Amazing! I never ate lamb in my life so I tried the rack of lamb and was very glad about my choice. It was so tasty!!! My love had the tuna and that was amazing too if you like a kick of spice. For dessert we had the bread pudding with dark chocolate and caramel ice cream. My love had French vanilla creme brûlée. Let me start by saying that Dans is good restaurant, and I always review a place based on what it's trying to be. Dan's bills itself as fine dining and has the prices and service to match. Unfortunately, the food just doesn't impress. They have since changed their menu a bit, but I had the lamb, and my companions each had the pork loin. Nothing really comes to mind as memorable. My expectation at fine dining vs just a diner or family restaurant would be flavor and preparation, both of which were just mediocre. I wouldn't say the lamb was tough, but it wasn't exactly tender either - definitely a bit over-done, On the other hand, the pork was appropriately cooked, but lacked flavor. The ambiance was a nice, if perhaps a little stuffy and dated - catering to a more old-school fine dining crowd. But that part is probably a matter of taste. Wait staff was excellent, I don't believe we saw the bottom of our water glasses at all, but were not hurried or interrupted in conversation either. Final verdict is exactly as yelp suggests. After many meals at Dan's, at their current location and before they moved, in Reading. I believe Dan's at Green Hills is the best restaurant in Berks County. Dan's offers high-end New York or Philadelphia quality in the relaxed atmosphere of a quaint old roadside inn. The prices reflect that, but they consistently deliver superior value. If you are looking for a special restaurant experience you cannot do better, whether for a business lunch, dinner with family or friends, or a romantic getaway. The service is excellent: friendly, knowledgeable and striking just the right balance between attentive and intrusive. The food is rich and flavorful with terrific balance. Beyond their many wonderful specials, highlights on the menu include the salads, soups, foie gras, duck ravioli, duck breasts (who else in Berks does duck nearly as well?), scallops, rack of lamb and filet mignon, Vegetarians and vegans will find great options too, the kitchen staff being highly accommodating. The desserts are amazing and will tempt anyone, at least to share. The wine list is diverse and well chosen, suiting most palettes and price ranges. Perhaps I should offer criticisms, but truthfully I can't; Dan's has been that good to me, my friends and family, every time. For the sumptuous food, attentive service, Berks location and excellent value, Dan's at Green Hills is the best restaurant around. read more
