So I have to give this place 5 stars!!! Why well mainly cause it was very good. I have only had clam strips from Long John silvers. So we had the clam belly app. Which were absolutely great compared to anything I have ever had. I also got 10 steamed and 10 raw clams. My first impression was, well....huh. they were great very good. The raw were slimy, very good with a lil lemon. The girls got popcorn shrimp hush puppies and fries. I believe the popcorn shrimp are battered in the same batter as the clams. That tells me they were not dumped out of a Sysco bag. My wife got the shrimp salad. She liked it but like she said it would be safe. Our waitress Cyndi was amazing she definitely went the extra mile. She brought us out a bowl of clam chowda to try. This place has very good food at reasonable prices. It is clean and orderly. Nothing fancy, but remember, it is a clam stand. Comfortable simple atmosphere. It would be a great place except - the noise. They do a good business so there is usually a lot of diners. Everything is hard surfaces and the sound reverberates in there. It was hard to hear our waitress. We gave up trying to have a conversation and ate in silence. Unfortunately the conversations around you are easy to hear as they bounce off the walls. This has an "old Florida" feel. It is frequented by mostly retired people with almost no young families when we were there. read more

OMG I can't believe I found a place that has fried whole belly clams. Most places here in Florida only have clam strips. They were delicious. There must be a separate section in the back of this place that serves delicious food, which is why all the reviews are so glowing and fawning. Obviously, I wasn't seated in that special location, because I was terribly disappointed. I went a couple of years ago for lunch after hearing so many rave reviews. It was a birthday lunch for me, compliments of my mother. On the door, a sign was posted that that were finally entering the 21st Century by now accepting credit and debit cards. Congrats! The place was definitely dated and greasy looking, and the cook was so dirty looking and his hair was so greasy that he looked like he bathed in the fryer oil every day. I saw that all the regulars were ordering burgers, which I've always been told were good, but at a seafood restaurant, I wanted seafood. I got one of the large seafood platters, which consisted of one and only one small fried fish portion, two tiny scallops, a smattering of rubbery clam strips, an even smaller smattering of fries, hushpuppies, and some cole slaw. Nothing fresh, all from frozen. All of it was greasy and the oil was old. This mess cost $25. Service was decent, but that meal was a waste of money. Mom was disappointed that I was disappointed, and I was disappointed that she forked out $25 for a really crappy meal. Sure wish I knew what place all these reviewers went to when they stated, "OMG! We went to Dan's Clam Stand a couple months ago for the first time and fell in love with the place. The food, staff, & service is phenomenal! We've eaten here 4 times so far and haven't had a bad meal. The most tender clam strips you could ask for. We've also had shrimp, fish, bay scallops, and oysters all fried perfectly, with no heavy breading! Love their creamy cole slaw! I am stunned to even try to explain what happened to us at this place.Tonight a friend suggested going...what a mistake. We ordered and our waitress was Kristi, (she did her job well). My friend's order was far edible to say the least, the clams he ordered had no clams but just fried batter. The waitress said she'd have someone come to talk to my friend. The owner showed up with the MOST unprofessional attitude I've ever encountered. He immediately removed the plates of food from under our noses and demanded we leave while cursing at us in front of his other customers. I've been to hundreds of establishments all over the USA and never have been treated this way. DH and I were disappointed in the food. He had fried clams (appetizer) and found they had too much breading, too much of an oily residue. No real clam flavor. I had grilled shrimp on a salad (you have a choice of Caesar or regular salad). All iceberg lettuce, some browned. Healthy tomato wedges, cucumber slices and onion slices. The shrimp were on a skewer and not flavorful. The best part was the bleu cheese dressing had huge chunks of the cheese. The service was great, no complaint there. The restaurant itself is a bit divey but the place seemed clean enough, bathroom included. I'm fine with divey, just mentioning it. Sorry, but life's too short, we won't be back. read more

Always the best! He had a large group, birthday cake and all and everyone was working their posteriors off, including Dan the Man to keep things rollin'. Great haddock and fries, grilled shrimps and fried oysters in our group. Everything came out fast, hot and tasted great! By the time we were done, about 6:30 or so, the line was starting to form but with the big group finishing I'm sure that line wasn't going to last long. read more

What a great experience! We have a large family (6 kids) and as such, eating out is sometimes unpleasant. Some places make you feel like you're a nuisance. Not here. Everyone was super friendly and Dan himself brought a couple Lobsters outside and gave the kids a show. He even upped our order on him! The food was reasonably priced and delicious. I had the haddock sandwich and my wife and kids the snow crab. The portions were spot on. We recently moved to the area and this was our first time here. I can tell you we will be back. Many times. Great hole in the wall restaurant. We had reservations and they put us at a nice table in the back. Steamed clams are great. Their colossal fried shrimp are awesome and plenty. Hush puppies are to die for. The calamari and fish strips are great appetizers. The menu is so good but be careful..you will over order and over eat We visited again today 12/8/2017 Great clam strips for appetizer perfect for two. I had the steams New England clams with necks and a side salad, it was one pound but great for me and the right size. My husband had the fried oysters with hush puppies...loved it. Took a little escape to the other coast and needed a seafood fix. Where did we go? This amazing little place. You seat yourself, they bring the menus, your server gives you recommendations if you need 'em and before you know it, the food is on the table. We had the clam appetizer and dang were they tender and sweet. The crunch on the breading was just right. I was thinking about the fish and chips (which is haddock) but decided to do just the fried haddock and some other sides of my choosing. I'm glad I did. The coleslaw has a good sweetish mayo based dressing that is similar to KFC but the cabbage was very very finely chopped so if you have a thing about texture it may not be for you. The green beans were buttery and tender/firm. The haddock breading is one of their specialties and it was well seasoned and crisp. No limp fish here! My dining partner had the blackened mahi with the rice which she raced about (the fish, not the rice though she said it was great too). Only thing I would say pass on is the fries. Nothing special here. Crinkle cut and honestly, not even all the way done through. I gave extra points for quick friendly service and the fact that Dan was actually there walking around checking on everyone. He was super sweet to my son and showed him a live lobster up close. read more

I'm giving this restaurant a 3 because the Clam Chowder and service was great. The "whole Belly" fried clams on the other hand...not so much. The bellies were non- existent. They were so small i thought I was eating clam strips. The owner came over and explained that this is what was delivered And he has no control over product. I'm from New England, if a customer is not happy, you either offer something else or take the meal off the bill. Neither was done. I left 3/4 of my meal and spent over $80.00 with tip. Really disappointing. Over cooked haddock. Cooked in old grease. You could taste the overused fryolator oil. French fries were like what you buy in a grocery store and bake in an oven. I ordered a lobster roll, the roll is good, but the lobster was under cooked and very blend, no tasty or good flavor at all. The most terrible thing was it was way much over priced. They charged $35 for a small lunch lobster roll, even it looked good in plate, it was absolutely NOT worth the money. I had much much much better lobster roll in Miami last spring, that was $17, I had lobster rolls in Ptown, Cape Cod and New port, RI last October, they were about $12-15. Here in Crystal River, another top rated restautant Crab Plant offers great tasty lobster roll too, and the price is $10.95. I didn't checked the price here before I ordered it as I thought their price should be about the same. And now I leared that Dan's Clam Stand in Crystal River is terrible. Most food are over priced, and most sea food are fried very greasy, unhealty. During my stay in Crystal River, my husband and I tried Cajun Jimmy's Seafood Seller&Cafe, The Crab Plant, Charlie's Seafood House Restaurant and West 82 Bar & Grill, we like them all. We never had such bad experience at any other places. You want to try tasty, healthy and reasonable priced food? Just DON'T come over here. read more

The only reason this is not a five star rating is because it is such a great dive and did not have a very good house wine! Outside of an RV/trailer park, this place has great seafood! The clam chowder was thick, had plenty of clams and very good. On my first trip, I had dries grouper and hubby had the fried shrimp. The grouper had a wonderful batter, was light and flakey. Hubbie said his shrimp was wonderful. The next time, I had the combo platter with grouper and shrimp- fried. Oh my gosh, it was so good that I wish I has leftovers because I woke up the next morning thinking about this place and the grouper. The hush puppies were wonderful and memorable in this trip. The cloeslaw was creamy but went uneaten due to the fact there was so much other food! Once again, bubbie ordered fried shrimp and cold beer. He loved both! I can't wait to return to Dan's. While I have eaten here once and it was good, I am writing this review for a specific reason. My daughter was in with her family and they took their 1 and 4 year old to Dan's for a bite of lunch. The staff was SUPER nice to them and even pulled a Lobster out of the tank to "play" with my 4yo grandson. A lot of class and friendliness on display for my family. That matters! My meal (except the coleslaw) was great. I had fried clam strips, an oyster burger, hush puppies, and coleslaw. Clam Strips: These were great. I got the fresh strips, not the frozen one. I don't know if the up-charge was worth it, but either way the clam strips were great. (Psst, add some hot sauce to your cocktail sauce.) Oyster Burger: Why don't they just put this thing on a baguette and call it a po' boy? (That would keep the oysters from falling out of the sandwich.) Regardless, this burger was delicious. The oysters are fried to perfections. The lettuce and tomato aren't special, but I didn't care. Only thing I would change is the price; at $14ish, it's a little expensive. Hush Puppies: These were delicious, too. They're the spherical kind, not the egg-shaped kind, if you care. Everyone can make a good hush puppy, and DCS is no exception. Coleslaw: I didn't even try a bite. My tablemate mistook my coleslaw for tarter sauce -- it was that watery. They need to tone down on the mayonnaise.
