We've lived in Sugarmill Woods over a year and finally found seafood we really enjoy. Our Server was Cindy and she was as much part of the meal experience as the food. The Sea Scallops had just been delivered and they were cooked perfectly. Not since Sea Captains in Myrtle Beach did we have such a meal. In MB it was over 100.00. Shrimp, Clam Chowder, Scallops, Onion Rings and Cole slaw were above and beyond we were expecting. Being from the East Coast we feel this is the best East Coast Seafood on the GULF for us. My favorite place to go to get seafood. Having come from New England, its very hard to find good seafood down here in florida. Dans has it, and they have live lobster fresh from Maine. You can buy lobster here, but i have and it tastes old, like its been in their tanks for awhile, Dans is fresh and delicious. If you are a New Englander, you like your clams, lobster and scallops. He has the best clam strips of anywhere i have ever been. I nev'er order clamstrips, they are hard and crunchy and just tasteless, his are just awesome. I am happy to order them instead of clams sometimes just to save a few bucks. My husband who likes Shrimp says Dans are the closest to the ones he got back in Texas where he is from. I would recommend Dans to anyone. Its not fancy, you can eat inside or outside, they will deliver to your car, come out and get your order, but they wear a mask and try to stay as safe as can be. Small place, far out. The food was average and there were mostly only fried options which didn't appeal much to me. Seafood didn't taste too fresh. The service was great though, staff was super friendly and nice and the prices were inexpensive. Would not go again but OK to try out once if you're into fried food. read more

My wife and I went yesterday for Snow Crab Legs. I think they were the best I ever had, and will be going back soon. The service was fantastic, to the point that everyone in the restaurant was talking and joking with the staff. I visit Dan's maybe once or twice a year and the food is always great. SUPER food at phenomenal prices! If you are in Crystal River and want a good meal without breaking the bank, go to Dan's Clam Stand. The fried shrimp are the best I've ever had, the onion strings are great and the lobster just can't be beat. The only reason it does not get 5 stars is that it is a dive. I am a Crystal River local and eat at Dans on a regular basis. My favorite is his $5.95 burger basket. I substitue the fries for hushpuppies so the girl friend and I get both. We usually add cheese for a couple of cents more. Always cooked to order, fresh and delicious. The staff are always terrific, responsive and really polite. FYI: His is probably the best Clam Chowder in town. Dan is great and very concerned about how things go with his customers. Dan is always happy to say hello if he is not out on his boat guiding or rescuing someone. Yes he is a local captain! read more

Stopped in on May 9 to get some clams, they are not as good as they used to be. Lucky for some people they now take credit cards but not American Express. I was totally unhappy because we sat outside and little did I know you can sit outside with other people who brings their pets. If I want to go to a restaurant and eat with dogs I would go to a dog park I do not want to sit with animals and eat lunch or dinner. I will not be going back. read more

Clams were as good as advertised, both the fried strips and the dozen fresh we enjoyed. The grouper sandwich was large, very light in breading, fresh and a bit expensive but worth it. Desserts were good, both the Key Lime pie and the chocolate. We arrived not far from closing time and were served with speed and smiles. Love this place! The staff is always friendly, the prices and menu options are great. We love the site and all of its uniqueness. We came for fish dishes but started with the burgers and haven't gotten to the fish yet. they have the best burgers in town. Our waitress Rose was so sweet and tended to our every need like we were her only customers. (We werent! The place was very busy) She offered wonderful suggestions but truly we felt no matter what she suggested, it would have been a home run. The food was fresh and everything home made. I'm from Maine and know my chowder....oh my WOW!!!! New England clam chowder to die for!!!!! Between the two of us had 3 bowls!!!! (I wonder if they ship this stuff?...pure heaven in a bowl) Would have had even more but tried the clam strips...melted in our mouths. Every bite was delightful. Coleslaw was perfection!!! Couldn't stop eating, and eating and eating!!!! Soooo full but oh look PEANUT BUTTER PIE!!!!! Took that to go but truly (just between us), it kept calling on the way back to the hotel...it never made it to the room!!!! There's ALWAYS room for pie...especially this one. So enticing, thought about turning the car around so a second helping but my over-full tummy was disappointed but thankful they closed for the night or We'd have burst! The atmosphere was friendly, inviting and cozy. Every nook and cranny had something fun to see. If you get a chance and look at my revue on trip advisory ou will see The absent owner of the establishment did not approve of my review. The owner instead of addressing the problem decided to just tell us not to come back. Is it possible that the food was as bad as I said yes! Was it possible that the waitress was involved in a long conversation with some of her friends while our fried food sat there prompting another employee to bring it to us. Also the order was wrong and told the rest would follow. By the way it never did! The food was cold the first time and undercooked the second time. Funny over an hour for first order and less then 10! The second time. When the breading on fried food falls off and is sitting on the bottom of the plate it's possible that it wasn't cooked. Is it possible that human error may have had something to do with this?? My revues (3) before we're all 5 stars great food . Is it possible that the establishment made a mistake and isn't man enough to admit it?the owner said he will leave it to a higher power , I will leave it to Yelp and trip adviser and word of mouth. You screwed up $75 worth of food and your not man enough to admit it. Very dissatisfied. New England clam chowder was very thick and could not find a single clam. Fried whole belly clams had no bellies and were just crumbs. My wife had clam strips and they were just crumbs also. The hush puppies were dry and nothing in them but dough. The French fries were frozen but the onion rings were excellent. My husband and I wanted to try a local restaurant since we are new to the area and wanted a spot to call home. Well this is not it! The owner (Dan) was at a table reprimanding a waitress where everyone could hear, we should have not been entitled to this conversation 4 tables away. He should of been worried about the girls discussing sex parties, yelling about silverware, pens and ash trays!! The soup was luke warm, hushpuppies were salty and burned. The green beans were over cooked and like rubber. The crab was over salted and not what we expected. I feel sorry for those who think this is good food. read more

Great food, friendly people speedy and professional service. My wife and I stopped by for a quick bite on the way to the airport on memorial day weekend after visiting grandma. They not only accommodated our requests for speedy service, but also brought us a bowl of their delicious clam chowder for free so we can try it and refilled my beer free of charge. We moved to citrus county back in August 2018. This is one of the first restaurants we tried. We have been back numerous times and have never had a bad meal. The grouper is delicious, the Clam chowda is the absolute best! I take family and friends here when they visit and they love it too. The servers are super friendly and most nights Dan himself is in the kitchen. He comes out to say "hi" regularly and makes sure everyone is happy. Coming from South Florida I wasn't sure what to expect in seafood. They are fantastic! The steamers, peel and eat shrimp , the lobster rolls, the captains platter. All delicious. And.....to top it off the best hush puppy's I've had in ages! Husband and I love Dans and pray it never changes. Do avoid it when there are festivals going on in Crystal River. That's the only downside. They are so popular that everyone in a 100 mile radius makes a beeline before or after the festivals to eat here. read more

Ate there a few days a go the food was very good The waiter was a total rude jerk . We waited almost an hour for lunch . Its a shame that such a good restaurant has such rude people who need a lesson in social skills . to top it off they dont take credit cards but they have have their own ATM scheme going and charge you two bucks . The NE Clam Chowder was sooooo good. You could definitely tatse the cream and the clams were clean. The waitresses are adorable and they all seem to take their jobs seriously. I had the blackened mahi mahi. It was not very good. But I just have to say: the ladies who work there and the chowder give me hope. Lol. I WILL go back and try something else. It wasnt terrible. It just wasnt good. But I think that can just happen. When i mentioned I wasnt charged for my glass of wine the waitress was more concerned for my invonvenience than hers. I must say that the food was very good however the waiter was less than accommodating. after sitting for exactly 40 minutes we asked where our clams were, his reply was he has to go and shuck them first., we finally got them after another 15 minutes. After dinner we went to pay the bill with a debit card and were advised that they could only take round figures and refund the difference, that was all fine however they had the nerve to actually show it as an ATM transaction and charged me an additional $2.00 for the service. We didn't realize this until we checked our electronic bank statement two days later or I would have paid cash. This was a first and last time experience. read more

We recently relocated to Florida. The last thing I did was to eat my whole belly fried clams while we were still in New England, fearing I might never enjoy these again. My husband owned a seafood restaurant in Massachusetts for 25 which was after he worked as a deep sea commercial fisherman for 31 years out of New Bedford Mass. We found this place on the net and after reading the reviews we thought we would try it. All I can say is AMAZING!! I had the fried whole belly clams and my husband had the fried grouper. The price for the clams was a surprise. We really expected to be paying much more than what they charged at $18.99 for the dinner. We were paying 22.00-23.99 in New England and Dan gets his shipped in, so I'm sure his profit margin isn't as big as New England. He really treats his customer well. The server, Melinda was awesome, the food impeccable. The place was loaded to the max with people, and I can see why. This man is doing something right. He won us over and we will most definately make this OUR choice of restaurants to go to. read more
