I've wanted a burger for about 2 weeks now but I didn't want just any burger I wanted a BURGER. Then, it hit me in the middle of the night...DAN'S!!!!So I went today. Like most Austinites, I'm not stranger. Dan's is an OG Austin food spot that feeds your belly and soul. I was actually excited when I pulled into the parking lot. All the cars bumper to bumper in this tiny lot just like I remember! I went in bc I came into the wrong drive to go into the drive thru. Nah biggie considering how backed up it was. I probably would have ended up in the middle of Manchaca anyway. Even before going in I knew what I wanted. Regular cheeseburger all the way add bacon and grilled onions instead of regular onion. Medium half fries half rings and medium chocolate vanilla shake. I could already taste it!!!!! I ordered the burger. No problem. Ordered the frings and STRIKE. I was told they don't do that there. Since when?! Well it has been a while since I been here. OK. Just a small fry then because i obviously gotta feel this place our again. Asked if they do the half and half shake. Was told their shake machine was down. I stared in 'this is McDonald's' confusion. Ok then. That's it. Came out to a reasonable $7.98. Reasonable enough that i could actually pay cash...SCORE! OK so now we wait....and wait....and wait....I get it. They are BUSY. Just be aware. Doesnt matter to me though bc I'm willing to wait for what my aunt lovingly refers to as "crack burgers" lol. And when it came out I rolled the bag tight and sped right home. When I got home I realized I'd messed up. I forgot to say extra pickles but I'm am addict so I've always got extra attention home! Added them and was ready to go! Tried the fries first and was less than enthused. First thing I noticed was that they needed salt. But that's subjective so no biggie. Tried another and it was slightly hard. Nah, these fries aren't it. There were a few curly fries that found their way into my bag. Those were great. My advice would be to get those. But you don't go to Dan's for fries anyway so who cares! I unwrapped the real reason for the visit and it I was pleasantly surprised. I expected to have a plain burger with only grilled onions bc of the way I'd phrased my order but no, it was fine all the way WITH the grilled onions. Thank you burger Jesus! The first bite though didn't illicit the joy I remembered from as Dan's burger! I was slightly disappointed. It was bad, but it was just a burger and not a DAN'S burger. But I kept eating and I found it. There were enough grilled onions and the bun wasn't grilled like I remembered but it was still a good burger. I have to say, as much as I live it here and I'll NEVER abandon Dan's this isn't what I remember. Maybe something was lost in the remodel. Its sad to me. When it looked like a wooden shack magic came from that building. You weren't even upset scratching your car in that tiny lot bc it was a part of the experience. I know I sound like an old head but it really signifies how Austin as a whole has changed and a part of me mourns that. This place holds a special place bc ive been coming here since I was a preteen. My sister worked here. Its more than a burger place to me and I feel like something has been lost. Like I said, I'll never not come here. I'll be back. Just a plan czhurger just the way my grandma use to make it beef, lettuce, tomato, pickle, ketchup and mustard. First time trying it and didn't disappoint. Close to my job and despite being lunch rush it was a quick stop in for lunch within the time constraints I had to work with. Smaller menu means they can focus on quality over quantity and that's always appreciated. Curly fries option was a great addition to my cheeseburger and sweet tea was excellent. Decor is a retro diner feel and 80's popular hits was playing throughout. When I went to leave the drive through line wrapped around the building and the parking lot was full. Heard about this burger place and was in the area, so I had to try it. Glad I did, because the burgers are really great. This might move In-n-Out priced burgers down my list for the go-to burger joint in Austin. This location is difficult to get into and I had to make some cut-thru around the next door parking lot to get back to the drive-thru and the traffic is heavy to get out of the lot, but worth it. I just got the single cheeseburger with Hickory sauce (no mustard). I wolfed it down on my drive up to mountain biking and this burger didn't hurt during my 6-mile trail run. I expected it to have more of a 1950's malt shop feel with juke box music, but it felt no different than sitting in a Texas Burger. I used to go to Dan's quite a bit as it was on my route to and from work. Now that I don't travel that way often, I haven't been to Dan's in years until today. My heavens, I had forgotten how down right tasty their burgers are. There are some essentials of American cooking when done correctly, just knock your socks off. Dan's cheeseburger is one of those items. Some of the faces behind the counter have changed but the friendly service has not. I really like the new but still retro decor.
