I visited DSS a few times last week and I was surprised with the new changes that they've been going through. The management of the whole strip where DSS is located has been giving the exterior a makeover and DSS has kinda moved some stuff around inside and they now have a bar where you can actually sit down at instead of at the tables. It's great if you're drinking alone or if you've got a drinking buddy. They've got some new drinks on the menu that are Makgeolli (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makgeolli) based. I've had makgeolli straight up and it's not the most flavorful beverage, but their Strawberry Makgeolli drink is pretty delicious. They use real strawberries to make the drink since you have to stir up the pitcher every few times when you pour yourself a glass. For an added bit of fun, after you finish your cup of Strawberry Makgeolli you can try to see if the clumped up strawberry seeds at the bottom of the cup represent anything, kinda like reading tea leaves! I've also tried their lemon and yogurt Soju. The lemon I'm pretty used to, but their yogurt soju is pretty damned good. All of their mixed drinks are really froo froo tasty, but the alky will hit you after several drinks, beware. read more

This place is the absolute worst bar/restaurant in Dallas. I went to Dan Sung Sa with a group of friends on 9/4/2009 and ordered a bottle of Crown Royal at premium bottle price (basically they're making 100%-150% profit from that one bottle). The waitress brought the bottle open with the spout attached and we proceeded to take our first shot and realized something was off. The alcohol seemed to taste watered down, but I'm thinking no way that can be possible, this is an established business. So I decided to test this theory by ordering another bottle, but asked the waitress if we could get it unopened and that we would put the spout on ourselves. She asked me why, so I explained the situation and she assured me that they do not water down their bottles and said she could not give us an unopened bottle. I asked her why not? and she told me that they preopen all of their bottles of Crown because they sell out every night. She then becomes extremely sarcastic and tells me to go back to my friends and ask them if they want the bottle or not, and of course I said no and asked for the check. At this point I'm extremely perturbed about the situation. While we're getting the funds to pay for this mishap of a Friday night, she returns to our table and asks if we would like to stay longer because she would be willing to go to the liquor store and purchase a bottle of Crown for us. Mind you it was 12:30am and liquor stores close at 9pm in Dallas. -_- z z z To some this might seem like just a theory with no proof, but after telling this to a friend of mine who happens to know the management there, told me that I was correct. He also told me there was a time a waitress asked him what would be the best way to water down their liquor. I've no way lied about anything said in my review and everything that happened that night is completely true. For whoever reads this I strongly advise you to NOT go to Dan Sung Sa unless you want watered down liquor. read more

Small but cozy bar in K-Town. Went there for a friends birthday and we were really taken care of. We had lots of food dduk bokki (rice cakes in spicy sauce), dalk ddongjip (chicken gizzards), kimmari (jap chae noodles wrapped in seaweed and fried...so yummy!), the fruit plate we ordered was so good, tons of fruit and a variety. The bar is just a bunch of private wooden booths for about 6-8 people and some smaller ones for 2-4 people. The seats aren't very comfortable actually since there is a pad thrown over a wooden bench, but I like the high booths anyway. I didn't pay anything, so not sure about the price..sorry! read more

This place looks sketchy and uninviting from the outside, but brave it -- even if you're a group of white kids like we were. The inside is a cozy, dimly lit maze of private "boxes" that are like little private rooms/booths. I'd say the ideal group size here is a 4-person group due to the size of most of the booths, but they probably have bigger booths that I didn't see. Again, it's kind of a maze, with the bar easily located in the center in case your waiter isn't attentive. Ours was, however, and he even managed not to look surprised when a bunch of white kids ordered yogurt soju. (IMPORTANT: If you want to mix it yourself and not have it watered down by the bartender, tell the waiter you want "a bottle of soju and a pack of yogurt.") I know this sounds disgusting, but you MUST try it. We came here solely for this drink. They'll give you a bottle of soju (Korean sweet potato liquor that tastes sorta like vodka but goes down easier) and a pack of these little liquid yogurt things. Get everyone a shot glass, and fill each shot with 2/3 soju and 1/3 yogurt. It's the tastiest, easiest shot you've ever had. We could have done these all night. Unfortunately, we had a room reservation at Family Karaoke (one block south), so we had to scoot. But this place is totally chill, makes you feel like you're in a different country (Korea, maybe, just a guess), and is a great way to experience an awesome new shot/drink. They also have a regular bar menu (appletinis, anyone?) if you're not feeling so adventurous. Prices are pretty reasonable (I think the appletini was $7). read more

It was cold and rainy the night I fatefully walked into Dan Sung Sa. I had only been in Texas for about 2 weeks after my move from Phoenix, AZ...and was seeking an adventure...and had a mad craving for Korean food. So, I referred to my handy-dandy Yelp friend and looked for a restaurant that was open that late at night. It was probably 11pm by the time I left. I walked into the restaurant and felt like I had been transformed to Korea. There were K-pop music videos on the screens everywhere and music was blasting from all different angles of the restaurant. I sat down at the bar and the bartendedr (and I guess one of the owners of the restaurant) quickly came to my service. He then suggested a dish for me. The "tuck-pocky". It was delicious! Although it was a strange dish and something I had never tried before, it was a good experience. It was also the night I met my first new friend in Texas. 1.5 stars. It's not just disappointing, it was borderline disastrous. After another long day of drinking, we find ourselves in search of sustenance. After frantically vetoing Velvet Taco, I suggested Korean. Sadly, most self-respecting Korean restaurants are not open at 2am. :( But wait!!! One was, DanSungSa to the rescue!!!!!! I've been here before but just had some yogurt soju that tasted more sugary than soju. But who knows? Food could be awesome right? :) WRONG! From the moment we got there the whole thing was a catastrophe. First, it was FREEZING. The AC was turned to like 64 degrees. I was cowered in the section, trying to avoid the air vents that seem to be everywhere. We decided on a tripe soup, and my friend ordered some kimchi pancake. Fine. Then she ordered some rice cake with dumplings. I hadn't eaten for over 12 hours and was starving. We waited. Then we waited. No ban chan. We wait. Horrific K-Pop of wannabe Korean clown-like girl gangsters and feminine girls who seen more plastic surgery than Michael Jackson ran a non-stop loop on the television above. You could not look away. Full volume on blast. Did I mention prices here are pretty high? Their fried chicken was listed as $20, and that was one of the cheaper items. I don't know how big they plan to make their fried chicken entree be but I know in Inglewood LA I can get 18 pieces of the bombest fried chicken for $18.99. Likewise, all their entrees were pretty pricey. Quality, however, did not match the price. Then rice cake with dumplings came out even though we had just ordered it. It was all rice cake, drenched in this red sauce, and only a few dumplings, which were the only edible portion of this huge waste of a dish. Where are our other dishes? It's been almost an hour and we're still sitting in the freezing seats watching mind numbing k-pop at 2:30am. I had to ask twice before someone finally bothered to check. She comes back and says that, oops! They forgot to put in the order. We had to ask her to check how long the food will take to come out. She goes back. 8 minutes. Stuck and starving, we opted to wait. Both dishes turned out to be barely edible. The pancake we didn't even finish a single slice. Basically tossed the whole thing. And the tripe noodle soup? The tripe didn't taste like it was cleaned properly. And there was barely anything edible in the whole dish. Just noodles and cabbage. What's worse? I had the worst diarrhea and was physically sick for two days afterwards, even vomiting the next day from just general indigestion. The tripe DEFINITELY was not clean. read more

I would rate this place 1/5 if the prices werent fair. I would recommend coming here for happy hour drinks. The food sucks and you barely get any meat when you order dishes like the seafood pancake or bulgogi quesadilla. Ambiance is okay and you get this itaewon bar vibezzz. Pretty sure I have already written a review for this place but oh wells. Dan Sung Sa is one of my favorite korean joints in dallas. They probably serve one of the top 2 tteokbokki's in dallas. I always opt for a doshirak (lunchbox), tteokbokki with gimari, pah dak, and yangyeum chicken. Doshirak - this is what my parents ate for lunch back in school. You get your steamed rice, egg, and kimchi. For 1.99, it's a solid meal by itself. Great value. Asian Jew approved. Tteokbokki with gimari - right level of spice and sweetness. Rice cakes aren't overcooked and mushy. The gimari adds a crunch factor and sops up all the sauce. Pah dak - boneless fried chicken pieces with scallions. The dipping sauce is a mayo based sauce that just complements the chicken well. Yangyeum chicken - fried chicken doused in a gochujang based sauce. Pretty much KFC, korean fried chicken. Dan Sung Sa is a cool place to try korean fare and drinks. The staff is friendly. Be sure to checkout their soju selection. Whenever I want to get some Korean food with a group of people, I come here. When you walk in and a majority of the customers/staff are straight up Korean, you know it's gotta be good. I usually order the Paddak (boneless fried chicken with green onion), some kind of Tuckpocky (rice cake and other goods in a spicy red paste), and the lunch boxes (only $1 each and come with rice, a fried egg, and kimchi). Those 3 three things are usually my go to for ordering and never fail to disappoint. Each dish is a little pricey but the portions are HUGE. I would say the Paddak and Tuckpocky alone could feed a table of four nicely. They have a bar so you can also get alcohol and soju to go with your meal. They're open late, offer great food, and have a unique atmosphere. When you first arrive, it looks like it'd be the shadiest place to walk into, but once you go inside it's a whole different world. read more

People write all over these walls, and it adds character to this establishment. We had the following: - Apple Soju - so light and delicious, I probably can drink the whole thing alone - Doshirak - Old fashion rice - rice, fried egg and kimchee, and SHAKE, SHAKE, SHAKE! So simple, but so good, and its only a buck! - Bossam - Steam pork with veggies - these were also simple, but good! Wrap your pork and veggies in a lettuce wrap, and you got yourself a winner! - Tuckpocky - Stir fried rice cake with veggie and fish cake - so spicy, but so good! Service was alright, nothing great but I guess cause it was somewhat busy. The food was decent. They're not kidding when it says spicy on the menu. The entrees doesn't come with rice, so you gotta order rice on the side for a dollar. Fried dumplings were pretty good. The food is not too overpriced but they're not cheap either. My friends and I spent about $50 including tips for two people. On the bright side, you get what you pay for. The entrees were big and the soup was big enough to share for $10. The yogurt soju is the best. We tried a variety of sharing plates, alittle pricey but the portions are huge. The seafood pancake was really good. The ramen was mediocre could have passed on that, but it was nice to try it out. All of the chicken dishes sounded good, we had the chicken with the mustard sauce. Not bad, really liked it. The Clam soup had a really seafood- taste, but it was good. In all, will be returning. It's a good late night eat place to get your Korean fix. They're renovating their bar, so it should look nicer in the future. The wood benches, I'm not a fan of, but the food is good. The menu has pictures and is in English, helps when ordering. Went here last week with my crew... after leaving go-shen across the street within 2 minutes... The yogurt soju is good... (how can you mess it up?).. good price too.. The food is good... better than average... However..... didn't care for the corn cheese thingy... and here is a warning to all NON-KOREANS.... Korean restaurants do not know the meaning of... money back in case you didn't like your dish/food.... So... be prepared.... perhaps its a cultural thing..... but good luck getting your money back if you order something that you didn't like... Been coming here for years, mostly before pre-gaming to go out since it's near (ish) to downtown. Really good bar atmosphere with good food and drinks. They've remodeled different things and added an expansion within the past few years so it's looking a lot nicer and more open than when I first started coming here. I think one of the things DSS is known for are the tins with rice, kimchi, and egg. It's usually something I always get however, when we got it last time, our egg was green so that was pretty unappetizing. Their kimchi is always spot on though. I also really enjoy their padak (fried chicken) and their jokbal (pork trotters), but really you can't go wrong with most of the stuff on the menu. If you're looking for good late night Korean food, I'd give this place a try! read more

Every time I've come to Dallas, this has always been the first stop my friends and I have made. I love the chill ambience and the casual food that this place offers. Place is a little pricey but the portions are HUGE. I'd recommend coming with a group of friends so you can share a bunch of different dishes - otherwise you'll just order everything and not be able to stand...I speak from experience. The all-time favorite dish for my group is the tteokbokki with ramen and cheese - try it out! Definitely make the trek down here if you have the chance! The customer service is not good at all. They said on Yelp that they open with limited capacity but when I get there, I see so many people and the way they set up their tables is too close to each others. Food is bad and ways too expensive. I paid $24 for a dish of stirfry pork, but what I have is all vegetables (cabbage, carrot and onione) and just little bit of meat. The kimchi tofu soup with pork has no flavor at all. I think they should name it "onion soup" cuz I see more onion than kimchi. Such a bad experience. read more

Great food. I really liked the little tin boxes (doshirak?) with rice, kimchi and fried egg. The kimchi here is the best kimchi I've ever had and I've been to a lot of Korean restaurants. This seems like the place to go to after a night of clubbing or something. Service wasn't great. After you get your food you pretty much never see your waiter/waitress again... plus I thought I lost a few years of my life from all the secondhand smoke. I enjoy and frequent this place whenever I feel like eating Bunsik, i.e. bar foods and late night snacks. Amazing vibe, because it has ambiance of old 80s-90s themed street eats setting. The walls are covered with writings and drawings that patrons left behind, it tells a story of what had happend, happening and will happen all at the same time during the moment we are sitting there. Ordering is simple with just a press of a bell and service is darn fast. Tip #1 : some of the menu items are pretty huge for one person, usually shared between 2-3 people so if you see the price range 13-16, that's why My favorite one to order is that old time do si rak with grilled kimchi and fried rice. I think they've cut out one item from this, it used to have spicy radish at one point, but all good. They just need to make sure the fried egg is fresh next time. Tip #2 - the place gets packed after 9 pm so plan accordingly if you want to get a table. It also has cocktail bar next to it, pretty hip place in Harryhine. So me and my husband tried this place last night and omg what a great change from traditional korean. Now I love banchan, that is the main reason I eat korean food, but it doesn't come with the food, and I'll be darn if I didn't even miss it. The atmosphere is great, little nooks to give the illusion of privacy, and the staff is polite. The food for the most part is amazing, there were some misses, but overall if your in dallas, definitely give this place a try. read more

This place has slipped a bit since the time I used to go here back in the day. The last time I was here they were out of 2 kinds of beer, which is not a good look for a dive bar. The food here has always been pretty good so no complaints there. I recommend the Tangsoyook, however that's spelled, and the bacon wrapped rice cake. Other than that the service is meh and they could definitely stand to gain some respect as a bar by keeping beers stocked. read more

NOT A KOREAN RESTAURANT!!!! I always take negative reviews with a grain of salt but listen... This place is not Korean! Despite the name and the wide variety of Soju, it is NOT Korean. There were no side dishes, which usually side dishes are built into the price of main dishes, so the price here is totally unreasonable. They didn't even bring out rice or any vegetables (lettuce or something to make wraps) with the spicy pork barbeque that we ordered. There wasn't even kimchi anywhere????? My husband ordered the doshorak which came with kimchi in it, and when I say it was inedible, I cannot stress it enough. I am SURE there was something bad (as in spoiled) about it. They forgot one of our dishes and when we decided we would just not mention it because we wanted to leave, the server came up and said "you ordered another food, right?" And as we were saying "yes but just cancel it, we've already been here so long" she walks away saying shell check on it. When she came back, she said "it will be six minutes". Truly, Korean soups have so many similar ingredients that they should be prepared already and the dish should barely take six minutes from the beginning. I don't want to pick on the server because she was trying, but she couldn't speak English barely at all, so we couldn't really communicate what we wanted/what was wrong. My husband asked her three times if the barbeque dish came with a side of rice and she couldn't understand him. We both speak korean so if she were Korean we could have managed, but she wasn't. The taste of the dishes we did get was off, and the kanpoongi chicken came with peanuts on it. I've never seen a Korean dish with peanuts on it. Also, they've allowed (or not washed off) drawing on the walls. 80% of it was inappropriate stuff, like drawings of penises and cuss words, which really cheapens the feel of the whole place. read more

Oh man the food here is not good at all. The food was heavily seasoned with a bunch of sauces that don't seem to enhance the food at all. But hey, this is what I get for going to a private club for dinner. As for the service, they have buttons for you to push to request a server. We thought that was cool and we felt bad after 5 push. Also if you're drinking, make sure you're okay with them storing your information in their system for a year. We gave them our DL without asking and the guy came back with some paper asking us to sign up to be their membership. (Apparently they filled for the wrong liquor permit and now have to do this). Anywho, it seems weird so our group opted out. The restaurant/private club is what you would expected in Korean town. Kinda laid back yet stretchy. I had to write a review on me and my friends experience. We came go eat dan sung sa on March 8, 2020. Its a sunday and that the restaurant had two or maybe three other tables besides our table. I notice there was only one server and "very young" and unexperienced one too. She claimed that they dont sell orange juice even though its on the menu and she didnt seem to know the menu or what she is doing. We ordered at 7pm. Our apps came out 25 mins in. After wards we waited till 8ish to recieve just two our entrees even though we had ordered it at 7. Im a server so i know that feeling of being on the floor by myself but im more upset at the management not being there at all. The server was no help and every time we asked for update on our food she would have no clue and run to the kitchen. We waited for our kimchi pancake and still didn't recieve it. So we asked her to put all the food in to go bags. We barely even ate. I am beyond upset at this establishment and will not come back. Oh and even worse, we came home to open our "togo" and realize they burnt the kimchi pancake and even had audacity to put it in to go for us. I am warning all, if you eat here you will wait forever for your food and it will be disgusting. Better off somewhere else read more

Came here after a long drive from Colorado to Houston, stopped by Dallas for a quick late dinner. After walking in, the first server asked how many ppl were in our party and after we replied. She walked away in which a different server came by and asked us how many we had and was then seated right away. Once our food came out, the soft tofu soup is horrible. It was so bland that I had to ask for salt just to add some taste other than spicy water. The bulgogi was $18 yet, the meat was burnt and portion was so small... the meal came with no side dishes (kimchi or anything). The restaurant looked nice and the environment seems fun but I will never come back here again, there's another restaurant just like this right next door that was more popping than this one... should've been a sign to go to that one instead... wish I had taken photos to show you all the food but just search up "poop" on google images for an example. read more

Not your typical Korean restaurant, but the service was very good when you need them. First and foremost, they don't offer side dishes (boo!), the best part of Korean restaurants IMO. But that's okay, let's skip to how the food tasted like. We got the fish cake soup ($8.99) , tossed ramen ($7.99) and bulgogi beef ($14.99) and a bowl of rice for ($1.00). The fish cake soup was very very bland, almost like they dumped water and a bunch of fish cake together and called it a dish. I wouldn't recommend it whatsoever. The tossed ramen w black bean sauce was a little bit better, and the portion was huge, which is always a plus! The ramen together with the bulgogi beef was actually very yummy! The best dish was probably the bulgogi dish, maybe that's why the price is so steep for it. $15 dollars for a small amount of beef in teriyaki sauce, but it was very flavorful and edible. Overall, I wouldn't come back here again but it was worth a try. read more
