We had an early dinner here on the weekend. We ordered a cocktail each, both made nicely. We shared the rice ball appetizer. And for entree the watermelon salad and the chicken fried chicken. All were nice, nothing too amazing, but good. The gravy on the chicken was a bit salty. The service was nice and the staff were nice. Nothing amazing, but nothing horrible either. Ah man. It was a horrible time in my life but I really enjoyed my experiences at this restaurant. My mom was excited that almost everything was gluten free. I was excited that everything tasted good. Food was very good. Calamari was excellent, didn't care for the marinara sauce though. Duck wings were excellent, spicy, which I liked. Hanger steak cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious. Chicken was very tender (I believe its dark meat). Just a suggestion is I wish they had some non dairy options or alternatives for sauces and things. read more

A fantastic dinner. Risotto balls for apps. Could have eaten a dozen. My wife had merlot beef to die for and I had the cast iron steak. Garlic butter was great as well as how they basted it in thyme. A friend and I were dropping off one of our girlfriends to get her fingerprints done for a new job and we decided to grab a quick lunch while we were out in Riverhead. While walking down the main street a restaurant called the Dark Horse caught our eye and we decided to go in. We ordered a few items from the spring menu and one of them was the fries. My friend asked if the chief could make us some CHEESE SAUCE. Well to our surprise the fries and cheese sauce was the BEST we ever tasted. I told the server who was super nice to give our compliments to the chef and to our surprise again, chef David came out to thank us personally and told us how he made the awesome fries. Two couples went to Dark Horse Saturday night and let me say, we will be back! The place is really pretty, the service outstanding and the food was perfect (and reasonably priced). Our server, Sonja and the bartender, Ross were amazing. They couldn't do enough to make our evening more enjoyable. Sonja's recommendations were spot on. These are hard-working, pleasant people. The caesar salad was perfect. I love a pretty, chilled salad with just the right dressing. My short-rib entree was delicious. The blondie (brownie) dessert is super yummy. At our table my husband enjoyed the steak frites and another person enjoyed the pork chop. They also ordered beautiful plates of raw oysters and clams which came on ice and were beautiful looking and fresh. Can't wait to go back to the area and eat there again! Highly recommend. read more

We had family event out here in Riverhead quite a while back yet the memory of this terrific meal is still fresh in my mind. Cozy place for a meal if ever out on the east end of Long Island. Very solid food in a nice atmosphere along with an attentive and helpful staff. Nice looking restaurant but not in a pretentious way. You can arrive here dressed up or casually attired and feel comfortable. The Beef Merlot was pretty delicious. As was the Chicken Fried Chicken and Grilled Salmon. Salad and crab cakes to start, and then ending with creme bruleee and cobbler for dessert to top off a very good meal. Only thing I felt a bit off were the prices. A bit pricey for the area and what you get but not overy horrible. Food came out at a decent pace with just the right amount of time between plates. My first impression was that the Dark Horse Restaurant would be dark. It's not! It's light and bright and golden, and the food can be described the same way. The salads sound really tempting, and the meat add-on prices are insanely reasonable, especially considering that $5 buys you a whole duck leg confit, crisped and delightful on the bone. The grilled shrimp bisque is light and subtle, and incredibly satisfying. The pork loin in the blood orange demi-glace is cut and served like a filet mignon, thick and meaty and whole, with a nice sear to the surface. My blondie turned into a soup, but the flavors were great. Light flavors, local produce (you can taste the freshness -- no joke!), and plenty of veggies serve as accompaniments rather than heavy starches, which means no cheating and no fillers. Plus, they're gluten-friendly for those plagued with sensitive stomachs! The prices are very reasonable, and although the menu is limited to a page, there are so many tasty options to choose from that you'll be hard-pressed to make a decision. Plus, there's an early bird $20 prix fixe. Can't wait to go back and have the bison burger on brioche, or the short ribs with pickled onions, or the fine-ground New England clam chowder and the baby spinach and sauteed mushroom salad with bacon dressing! read more

This is a nice little spot, I ordered a cheese plate while I sat at the bar. I also ordered the rib eye special. I mentioned to the bartender that I would first like to work on my cheese plate, being that I was throwing the one man party & an appetizer of that size could fill me up I'd probably take the steak to go. I requested medium rare but more on the rare side so it would travel better. First let me start by saying the food was excellent. Even though I had the steak much later in the evening, it was delicious & cooked exactly how I asked. My only criticism of the restaurant was I felt rushed. As soon as I was finished with my first beer & cheese plate they dropped the to go bag in front of me with the check as if they wanted to free up one bar stool. The establishment wasn't overly crowded & I'm always a gentleman so I found that a little odd. I asked the bartender for another beer & said I'd pay cash separately as to not need another check. She sort of had an "Umm, oh ok" moment & pleasantly served me a fat tire. I gave the restaurant 4 stars because I didn't want to knock them down, but for making me feel rushed & it's not exactly an inexpensive place I believe 3.5 stars is accurate. I visited Dark Horse after an afternoon at Tanger. Very cute and attractive place. Service was fast and attentive. My friend and I both checked in on yelp, and got a free glass of wine with each of our entrees. They let us pick from any wine on the menu that was available by the glass. I ordered the Dark Horse Burger medium, but it came out well-done. The fries were very good -- crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. My friend really liked her steak frites. It came with a side of fries and collard greens. Before our entrees gave out, they brought us each a piece of warm cornbread with a small glass of butter. The cornbread was a really nice and much appreciated surprise. The butter was a bit difficult to use though, as it was pretty cold and almost impossible to scrape out. All in all, a solid place for dinner though likely won't turn any heads. read more

Last night, after receiving horrible treatment at Tweeds next door and walking out, we stopped at the Dark Horse Restaurant. From the minute we entered, we were treated like "special" customers. The food was delicious! Drinks were great. The staff, incredible! Sonya, Paige, the bartender and the chef were friendly, and happy to serve us. I had the filet mignon, they let me substitute their amazing polenta for mashed potatoes. The filet was cooked perfectly. Everyone enjoyed their meal together. I will definitely go to this restaurant again. Tweeds owner and manager can learn a lot about how to treat customers from the staff at Dark Horse! My friends ordered the duck, risotto and filet mignon and they were all very happy with their meal. The waiter saw us at the bar looking at a menu, and let us know that if we would like to wait just a few minutes he could get us a table. It felt like a blessing on a busy Saturday night, especially after every other place in town basically told us "Whoops sorry you need a reservation". Anyway, food was meh. Calamari with marinara tasted like cornmeal and cocktail sauce. My Sesame Tuna was cooked perfectly, but the teriyaki that generously covered it was really salty. Baked clams were actually amazing, but they were so small! Like, 8 clams, each the size of a half-dollar. Drinks are good here; Moscow Mule was delicious, Irish Coffee was nice too. The service is excellent here! The staff is warm and engaging and knowledgeable. Delicious food and used to have nice portions justifying the somewhat higher pricing. Favorite dish is Chicken Fried Chicken. A bit over a year ago they cut the portion of what used to be a healthy two piece dish of CFC in half claiming that most people weren't finishing it and it was going to waste (not that I understood this logic). Except they didn't cut the price in half. I was very very disappointed with this story. If I couldn't finish it I was always happy to bring some home. I very rarely go back now. I felt it was a bit deceitful. And for the smaller portion it's difficult on a regular basis to justify the price remaining high. read more

Had lunch here today while spending the day out east. My sister has celiac disease and we were told they have a great gluten free menu. She had a choice of almost everything one the menu as long as the sandwiches were switched to gluten free bread. She opted for a salad and said it was amazing. I had the braised bbq sandwich which was great, and the French fries were some of the best I've had. Most of the staff was extremely helpful and friendly. Light and flavorful, perfect for summer! Entrees: Red lentil curry over jasmine rice, and seafood mac and cheese. Both amazing! Dark Horse has an eclectic menu and serves fresh, local ingredients when possible. The chef is very creative and offers a good variety on the menu. Friendly, attentive staff! The only thing we had a very minor issue with was a slightly dirty plate and something in the bottom of our water carafe. Just a little more attention to those details and it'll be 5 stars!
