Gluten Free Heaven! My fiancé has celiac and we have struggled to find good restaurants that have safe kitchens! Well no fear because this restaurant is exactly what we have been looking for. We splurged and got the calamari and the beef carpaccio. It has been a very long time since we have been able to eat fried food. For dinner we got the soft shell crab which was life altering (in the good way). We also split the bison French dip which is made with homemade gluten free bread. We had the best time enjoying a wide variety of ciders and will be back soon! read more

Awesome atmosphere. Everything can be made gluten free, and Ross is one of the best waiters I have ever had in any restaurant I have been to. Loved this place. Nice comfortable decor small cozy place. Great menu I had the merlot braised beef it was excellent. The burgers look outstanding my friend really enjoyed. We attended our son's day-after wedding brunch here and I have to say it was above and beyond my expectations. The service was great and the food was excellent. The food is thoughtfully composed, delicious, and GLUTEN FREE!!! The menu is small, but they have revolving dishes and specials, which keeps the selection fresh. The food is locally sourced and of the highest quality. Order the truffle fries; you can thank me later. They have a nice beer and wine selection. Best of all, the service is fantastic. The people are warm and friendly. The manager, Ross, is so funny and super accommodating. I have a dairy allergy and he always talks to the kitchen concerning my order, which I appreciate. This is hands down one of my all time favorite restaurants! They can make nearly anything on the menu gluten free & delicious. There are so many options for those w/celiac. Great service and awesome food' I sat at the bar and had GF pasta with clams and shrimp. When my meal came I thought it was too much for me to eat but it was so good I finished the entire thing. We had our daughters after wedding brunch here yesterday. Enough can't be said about the venue, staff and Ross the manager. The quality of the food was freshly made for our party. The room was a perfectly setup for our buffet lunch with very polite servers and bartenders. Even though we had more people than expected, they were completely adaptable and never ran out of food. They even took care of people with special dietary restrictions with no problems at all. I would highly recommend this restaurant not only for parties but their restaurant is also excellent! read more

This was our first time at this restaurant and was a bit disappointed as it is in our neighborhood. Locality was good as was the atmosphere.. For appetizers we got the calamari which was a little overcooked and because I couldn't decide which soup I wanted I got the 3 soup sampler. The chilled watermelon soup was terrible. Too spicy ,couldn't even taste the watermelon. Then our entrees came. We both got the pasta with baby shrimp and clams. More than a little al dente and the baby shrimps were not cooked well. Clams were good. Overall not a good experience. Won't be back and will not recommend this restaurant read more

I really like the food here. It is delicious and the menu is not overbearing. Because the menu is fairly specific, you better have an idea for what you are in the mood for coming in as it is not the home of 1000 choices. My wife requires a gluten free diet and the fact they can do everything gluten free is a huge bonus. I removed 1 star for the fact that i think the menu is a little overpriced considering this is Riverhead and not the Hamptons. read more

What a disappointment. Went for dinner .Its a fairly new restaurant owned by the same gentleman that owns Tweeds next door which I've never been too. Nice modern decor dimly lit ,quite small, maybe about 15 tables.The hostess was very accomodating and sat us right away.The waitress was okay I Ordered the duck two ways $3100 served with rice and creamed spinach.It took about 30 mins to get it .When it did finally arrive the duck(a breast and a leg of confit) was very mediocre . The breast was slightly sweet and salty the leg taste like a salty overcooked piece of fried duck.The spinach was like soup and the rice was average.Overall not that great, but I might give them another chance. read more

We had the apple squash and clam chowder soup which was delicious. My wife and I had the seared Tuna with see weed salad. It was outstanding. Great presentation and prepared well. Umm...I want to marry this restaurant! This place is so good that I am writing this review at dinner with my husband and we both just knocked back a half dozen oysters - and yum!! We checked in with yelp and the server, Ross, was so kind and said we could order whatever we wanted. I got a local northfork barrel merlot, my husband opted for a Spanish white- they were both great (and free!). For dinner, my husband got a tuna steak and I got steak frites. Both dishes were amazing! If the food wasn't good- I would still come back because the staff were amazingly kind and funny and down to earth awesome! If you are in town, check this place out - you will not regret it! I'm thinking about proposing when (if) I come back for dinner again tomorrow :) read more

This place is literally amazing. Ive been gluten free for the last 2 years i NEVER thought id have crab cakes or FRIED CALAMRI at a restraunt ever again. Came for lunch. Went in through the back entrance and had no idea what was going on! It's pretty cool though and if you happen to park back there, it's a great area of the restaurant to check out. Service was excellent--the server was very sweet and she made sure we were accommodated and happy with our meals. I ordered the crab cakes (of course) and vegetable burger. Both were really good. The crab cakes came in the form of two small patties with chipotle-mayo and a small salad. Very good (although it could have been cooked a little longer, but I'm not a chef and have no idea what I'm talking about). The vegetable burger was definitely hand-made (there's something seriously wrong about frozen veggie patties that have been shipped and have been sitting in the freezer for months that you can just...taste). If you're used to eating beef burgers, you might get thrown off by the texture though because it's a bit mushy--and if you eat beef burgers, that usually equals raw meat...but in this case it's just how it's made. Overall, if I ever happen to be in Riverhead, NY again, I'd definitely recommend this place. read more

Dark horse is our favorite restaurant on L.I. When we had to move our elopement from Las Vegas to the Hamptons, I knew that we wanted Dee at Dark horse to cater the small event. She accepted last minute, delivered and help set up. Every single thing was absolutely delicious! We had calamari, risotto balls, hummus & veggies as apps and then Chicken fried chicken and braised beef, followed by the most delicious oatmeal raisin cookies, apple compote, whipped cream & chocolate mouse. Earlier in the week we picked up pastrami sandwiches, ceasar salad and the most delicious smooth mushroom bisque. You wouldn't believe this soup. Seriously amazing. There was so much food leftover that we ate it throughout the week. We got so spoiled last week that now all meals are a disappointment. haha read more

Have been here twice, once when they first opened, service was slow and not particularly seasoned or attentive, had clams on the half shell and dish of pork tenderloin that was ok but a terribly small portion. Figured I'd give them another try, went back on a pretty dead night - stood waiting for a table without being acknowledged for over 10 minutes when the place wasn't that busy (which is almost impossible as the dining room is pretty small). Staff was subsequently apologetic and attentive, however I had a very underwhelming scallop in a sautee sauce that was bland and should have been much better for a $32 entree. I didn't even bother finishing half of it and could have gotten a better scallop dish in a number of other local places for half the price. Although the room is nice, given the number of newer dining options in Riverhead, Dark Horse is definitely not the among the top tier dining experiences in town in terms of overall value, great food and service. read more

Really interesting decor, bright, modern with industrial features. The back entrance thru the parking lot is astonishing though and shouldn't be missed.. I won't ruin it for you, but don't forget to check it out. The server was extremely helpful and friendly. Sadly, many of the items on the menu were not available when we went. We shared the brasserie salad and the gluten free calamari. the salad was excellent w/ beets, apples, walnuts and bleu cheese. the calamari was decent although we didn't enjoy the texture of the gluten free breading. My husband devoured the prime angus steak. I had the fresh catch fish- fluke with a white wine sauce and lemon, moist and delicious with a side of jasmine rice and zucchini. My boyfriend and i were originally going to go to another place but found out it was closed for the holiday so this was our second option. We decided for the new year we wanted to try different restaurants and different foods. This was definitely a really great start. It's a small place with a very quiet atmosphere. The menus are on clipboards which i found to be different. We browsed the menu which was small. The waitress came, who was so nice. Both of us had a hard time deciding what we wanted to try. We saw that they had a crab dip and we both were interested in it. The waitress told us that it was new to the menu and they were actually just eating some of it we ordered that and a Caesar Salad. Both of those were soooo good. The crab with the chips had such a great flavor i couldn't put my finger on it. Even the salad was amazing! When we went to order our dinner, my boyfriend had a hard time deciding between the and the duck. The waitress said basically steak is steak, but a good duck is hard to come by and boy was she RIGHT! I ordered the Merlot Beef and both dishes were sooooo good. I have zero complaints about our first time experience. Even the drinks were good. I cannot say enough about the steak dinner "Peter" the chef cooked us the other night! It was a steak that you will think about when you wake up! A definite visit will happen soon! So the steak cooked medium Rare PERFECT! The snow peas and asparagus and mashed potatoes were all perfect and delicious! Each food complimented the other. The herbs and spices on this incredibly juicy steak blended so amazingly with potatoes and vegetable! It will be something you won't forget!! The waiting staff were nice and attentive. Ross the manager was very nice and genuinely cares about the customer! Very professional, in today's times it nice to see there are people who care about customers. Everything on this menu is gluten free which made my wife very happy. The bartender and waitress were friendly and attentive. We had a soup sampler as an appetizer (clam, corn and apple squash). Great idea for an appetizer and all very good. My wife had steak and I had a shrimp, clam spaghetti special. We could not turn down dessert. All were excellent. Prices very reasonable. My only knock is the bathroom and it's frustrating sliding door opens up to the main dining room. Odd but nothing to take a star off the rating. It was my first visit to the restaurant. I like the added menu of gluten free options however my first mean lwith them left me wanting no more. My meal was the Chicken fried chicken. It was not plated with looks in mind and the saturation of potatoes and sausage gravy was not to my liking. The succotash was not cooked and you definitely can tell it was frozen by the freer burned Lima beans. My grandchildren ordered the hamburger and again it was saturated with the union sauce. Very messy. I order the chardonnay which was supposed to have a flowery yet woody taste however it tasted like wine from the grocery store. The staff were not welcoming and we're not really interested in having us as patrons. I travel around the world with my grandchildren and we tend to rate restaurants a lot and this one was definitely not the one that left us wanting to return just on the atmosphere alone. read more

Atmosphere: located in a century-old, restored building, this restaurant melds old-world charm (original bricks and wood) with modern touches (a reclaimed, stainless steel bar). The decor is found pots and pans from the original restaurants. I'm not too keen on live music; however, the duo here kept the acoustic volume just right! Such a relief that I would heard my partner across the table. Staff: the waitress was very friendly; she always kept us informed, even when the food took a while to come out. She was also knowledgeable about allergens. The busser was a little dopey. Food: the emphasis is on local and seasonal, including beers, wine, and produce. The complimentary cornbread (contains nuts) was light, fluffy, and delicious. The personal GF pizza crust was great, though the sauce tasted jarred to me. I loved the veggie burger- clearly made in house (as it barely held together) with grains and mushrooms- very earthy tasting. The apple and squash soup was decent, a little too sweet, but good enough to finish. I wish I had room for dessert (all GF), but I'm sure I'll be back. read more

Upon arrival we stood at the door for over 5 minutes before anyone even came to greet us and they were not that busy. There was more empty tables than those occupied. There appeared to be a few servers but it turns out the bartender came from behind the bar to get us a table. We had to wait for them to set it which was fine. Then we waited for another 10 minutes. We then asked the bartender if we could sit so he came from behind the bar to seat us. We sat down and for 10 more minutes we sat there and no one came to even give us water. Meanwhile one of the servers was at the end of the bar sipping a drink. We quietly got up and left, no one even noticed that we were leaving. Very poor management! GLUTEN FREE! This restaurant offers local comfort food that is primarily gf friendly (bread basket and crab cakes anyone)! The service can be slow, but the food has always been worth the wait. It is a lively addition to reconstructing downtown Riverhead--supporting the local businesses there is another reason to make the trip! read more

What was always a sure thing for my Celiac family to eat at in the past, is not quite the same these days. We have been quite displeased the last two visits we had at the Dark Horse. A very limited menu has even become a more limited menu. Few options, no specials, and still out of choices on menu. Ordered crab cakes; were barely cooked, and pricey. Ordered fried calamari; very small portion for high price. Ordered salmon; extremely distasteful and not cooked at all. Ordered steamed mussels in wine sauce; no seasoning, not a remote taste of wine and extremely salty!!! Before even eating half of the portion, had to stop due to the very salty abe fishy taste. Was always told that all meals are gf except for a regular hamburger bun. Was served mussels with regular toast all over meal. As a result my husband could not share my meal due to his Celiacs. This restaurant used to always serve gf cornbread to the table as starters. This is not the case anymore unfortunately! read more
