What a horrible experience. After a long day and week of talking to kids about college, we came here to eat. When we got here, there were 3 other people here. As I write this review we are 1 hour and 40 mins in and NO food. Parties have come in after us and got their food while our party of 11 sit waiting. They brought 4 peoples food out of the group. After multiple check ins they said they could have it out to us in 20 mins. Are you serious? Unacceptable! Because our Recruiters were hungry and tired, we agreed and asked for it to go. All we got were excuses and incompetence. I would've been happy with Chick-fil-a instead of this. At least I would've made it back to my hotel in time to pick up my Birthday treats by 7 PM and get some Starbucks so I can get work done in preparation for our college expo the next day. That won't happen because of the extensive delay. Worst service ever. 20 mins didn't happen. 2 hours in a restaurant and no food!!! SMH!!! read more

Norwood here at Uncle Darrows knows Creole food! The gumbo is the best I've had in California. The catfish you can get grilled. The jumbalaya is so good you'll come back everyday. When here on 11-3-17. Let me first start with we had the big easy platter and 2 hurricanes. The best fish and shrimp,oysters I every had I have had a lot of fried fish and this was perfectly season. The bartender was friendly and great customer service from whole staff. I'm from the bay area and let me tell you this will always be a top priority stop for me. Owner, Norwood is extremely nice and inviting. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly as well. The food is delicious especially the fried catfish. Couldn't give 5 stars because it's really irritating to me that they don't have bottles of ketchup. Nothing is more agitating than having to tear open 5 packs of ketchup just to hunt down a waiter and ask for more ketchup. I guess I'll just have to bring my own bottle next time. Found this little gem while looking for a quick lunch. It's hard to find good southern Cajun cooking in Los Angeles, but it always worth search. Darrow's nailed it! Having experienced Nola foods and dining with a friend that had just return from Nola the week previous we were blown away but the simple yet authentic menu. I ordered the Zeek Po'boy which is combo of shrimp and crawfish on a fresh French roll with some of their tater salad mixed in. Add some of their "gater sweat" and you've got a winner. My friend ordered their Cajun bowl and raved about it trough the whole meal. We also ordered a few additional sides to try - the jambalaya and Cajun fries. When we first arrived we were greeted by the wonderful staff and given samples of a few of their menu items. EVERYTHING was amazing. I can't wait to go back for the gumbo. The little bit I tried was incredible but being as it was a little warm out I passed and I'm still regretting it. Couldn't pass up on a hurricane while we were there as well. Strong and tasty , just how we like it. Besides the food, the staff was wonderful. The owner came by and shared a bit of his family story upon us asking. These are true southerners trying to bring a taste of their cooking to us westerners. They made us feel at home and like family. You know a spot is a winner when you leave with a full belly, a smile on your face and you're already planning a trip back very soon. This establishment gets and A for service and ambiance! Located in the strip mall on Avalon south of Carson St., this place will definitely get a second visit. Parking is structured just below an apartment/business dwelling so there is plenty of it. Samples of the side dishes are offered to first timers so that you can have an idea upfront of what you like. I ordered the grilled shrimp Po' Boy which was great even without dressing. The shrimp was seasoned perfectly. My husband ordered the chicken sausage Po' Boy and he too was not disappointed. My side dish option of a chicken jambalaya/red beans mix was ok but would opt next time for the traditional red beans and rice (my husband's were yummy). I'm not a ranch dressing eater so the alligator sauce wasn't a hit for me; but appeared to win over the masses. As for customer service, we were greeted, serviced and regularly checked on by multiple people. We were asked about the food and invited back to the Father's Day weekend celebration. The classic shrimp and oyster po boy was off the charts good! The oysters were perfectly seasoned and fried....and the Tater Salad was great! The chicken wings appetizer was delish...the wings were fried with a light batter, crunchy, not greasy but moist! Perfection! The red beans and rice did not dissapoint! To crown off the great meal...We shared a peach cobbler that was superb! Fresh peaches and cinnamon stole the show! Delicious!! My fiancé ordered the gumbo ya ya & I ordered the Bayou salad w/ grilled catfish. Everything was so flavorful! The catfish was cooked perfectly & the Cajun rub made the fish so tasty with nice crisp greens & their gator sweat just completed the salad! The gumbo, outstanding it immediately transported me back to when I visited New Orleans. The flavors & spices mixed perfectly I couldn't stop picking at my fiancé's plate! The Customer service is exceptional. Greeted right away & everyone was friendly. Felt very comfortable & welcomed. Was excited to try this place with my mom. First timer. Upon entry it is cute as a button. Great Decor great layout. You pay when you enter and we tipped them before getting any service. The cashier was nice and offered us free samples. The samples were Tasty Bites and we decided on the Gumbo Ya Ya. Unfortunately the portion was extremely small for the price and it was overcooked. There was half of a blue crab in the bowl and a large scoop of jambalaya. However, very little gumbo. The man was very soft because it was overcooked. The cornbread was tasty. I asked for a cup of water from the gentleman who brought us our food. As he walked away he said loud enough for us to hear, we don't have servers. This was the first time I've ever had a Po'Boy sandwich and I ordered the Bayou Classic which was shrimp+oyster mixed with various veggies and etc. We were greeted as soon as we walked in by the owners who were friendly and offered us samples to try out some of their food. The food was delicious and tasted even better with their signature "Gator Sweat" sauce. Also tried out their Jambalaya and their Hurricane drink which was great as well. Ordered the shrimp and catfish dinner and choose the collered greens and red beans and rice as my two sides. Ordered it to go, due to it being New Years Eve and they were closing. When given my order i asked the guy did he put any Gator sauce in bag in which he replied "yes, i took care of you. Everything you need is in the bag." I get home no gator sauce or coctkail sauce was in the bag. The fish was over-breaded i dont even think i received 4 shrimp plus they looked popcorn sized, not big at all hence the $18 i paid. The red beans and rice were so thick, like paste, no taste to them at all. Havent ate the collard greens, I am so turned off and upset I'll probably just throw them away. Yummy food, but what left the biggest impression on me was the really nice customer service. Start and end, they were very welcoming. It was our first time there, and the young man at the register immediately started preparing samples for us. There's even a helpful sign to direct you on how to order and stuff like that haha. It answered every question I had as a new customer. The food was yummy (I personally really liked their freshly made fried chicken, with their green sauce - it tastes a bit like.. mayo and tartar sauce?). And then at the end, Norwood was just so welcoming to the utmost degree. You could really see the passion he has, not just for good food, but for people. That he cares about bringing people together with food, and he's passionate about spreading positivity with what he's doing. Just super accommodating and positive. There's a parking garage behind the IHOP-Darrow's building that I think you can only get into on Carson. Let me preface this by saying I don't eat much Cajun food because I don't particularly like sausage or shrimp. But what I do eat, I love because it's got so much flavor! That being said, Darrow's... I've been waiting for this spot to open for months, hoping beyond hopes that they'd serve alligator nuggets. They don't. But the employees are nice and patient and offer free samples since they just opened. The place is nice though, ambient, and with a full bar I believe. The only flaw they cannot control is that the location receives no cell or data service because of the apartments above. I ordered a cat fish po'boy lunch combo which is supposed to come with two sides so I opted for this. Choosing for my first side the Cajun fries. I couldn't decide what else I wanted so I asked the cashier what she recommended. She said the fries or the red beans & rice. The way it's shown on the menu you assume the red beans & rice are one side but no they are two. That's fine. Most Mexican restaurants are the same. So I don't get my Cajun fries which makes me sad. I didn't even realize this until after I got my food btw. The catfish is bland and flavorless which also makes me sad. I ordered my food to go and I received one tiny container of hot sauce for my entire sandwich which is huge. I used the entirety on half of a half of my sandwich. That's right barely I quarter. The rice and beans are alright. Nothing special. I've been eating beans my whole life and blah they taste like my boyfriend's grandmother's Gallo Pinto which is the same exact dish in Nicaragua. I wish I would have gotten those Cajun fries. Anyway I gave three stars because of the lack of flavor. I would love to give them another opportunity and change my rating but I will be eating in so I can have unlimited hot sauce. And maybe order some beignets. read more

Spent a sunday evening with the fam here. It's rare nowadays to get a greeting when walking into a restaurant but here Uncle Darrows (the owner) @uncledarrows spoke and welcomed us with free samples and a short background story about the place. Their specialty is seafood Po Boy sandwiches, Gumbo, etc. After taking this pic of us he officially welcomed us into the Darrow family lol . Oh and the food was da bomb!!! Can't go wrong with a fried catfish, fried shrimp, tater salad (potato salad), and soft roll sandwich! It was crunchy, seasoned well, and not soggy at all. This place is delicious. We went for lunch on a weekday and it wasn't very crowded. It's a pretty large and very clean space. The service was great. Me and my BF got sandwiches that come with sides and a drink. DELICIOUS! I got the one fried oysters and fried shrimp. My favorite. Their sauces really add even MORE amazing flavor. I'd been going to Uncle Darrows since 2003 in Marina Del Rey and was so, so sad when they were forced out. And admittedly LA folks don't tend to venture down to Carson often. Thankfully we were in the area and had to say hi to Norwood and the gang, and of course get my gumbo fix since it'd been so long since I'd had it. Oh man, it was just as I remembered - best gumbo in California, hands down. We got to taste a new menu item - brisket - and it was the best brisket I've ever had - slow-cooked for 24 hours, it melts in your mouth. So tender and juicy - WOW. I'm totally getting the brisket poboy next time. But what puts this place over the top is that they have daiquiris!! I got a hurricane and my wife got a strawberry daiquiri, both were excellent and just like New Orleans. As with their Marina del Rey location, if it's your first time there, you can sample the gumbo, red beans and rice, and jambalaya. My family and I just visited this restaurant for the first time. We are always skeptical of southern food for my husband is from New Orleans, but we were not disappointed at all. Not only did they allow us to try their Gumbo roux, red beans, and jambalaya before ordering, they were extremely friendly to answer our questions. Needless to say we were all in the mood for PoBoys so we didn't stray, but the tastings were delicious! We also enjoyed the fresh drinks, Hurricane and Strawberry Daiquiri. The interior is clean and new and there's a parking garage that makes it convenient getting in and out. There are TV's up with a bar and overall it's a good atmosphere inside. It's more of a sit down place. The service is very good and the staff was very pleasant. I ordered a po boy and gumbo to go. I was kinda "eh" about the food. I thought the shrimp po boy was good at the time especially with the gator sauce. Since then I've eaten at some competing restaurants around the area. The Po Boy wasn't bad but it isn't as good as some of the other places around. Considering the portion size relative to the price, their Darrow's Po Boy is pretty pricey. Granted I've never had gumbo before, it just wasn't good any way you cut it. There was sausage, shrimp, and crab in it but somehow it all tasted like a dirt soup. Everyone/every business is entitled to a bad day so I'll just chalk it up to that..for now. The service was good, the owners are nice, and I love supporting minority owned businesses. Unfortunately for them, there are other similar options within a mile radius that offer more value for the price.
