I was so looking forward to trying this French patisserie, but man was it a FLOP!The service was horrible, I couldn't believe how rude they were and would not heat up some of the food even though we requested it, the pastries when asked to eat there were served on mini paper plates with the food hanging off. This place deteriorated significantly over the years. They used to have a very good stollen and Christmas cake. However, the Christmas cake even 2 years ago was nothing in comparison what they had before. I decided to give it another try and bought a stollen there today. It seems to be old, not tasty, and extremely overpriced. I do not know what happened to this place but I am not going there anymore. read more

Nice little French bakery on Camino Del Mar with viewing windows into the pastry kitchen. Coffee and croissant were good, and the freshly baked bread looked awesome. I took my girl friend here today for what I hoped would be a pleasant mid-afternoon coffee and snack. The food choices were quite limited but we ordered lattes, a chocolate croissant and a cinnamon bun. The baked items looked a bit "tired" so I asked to have them warmed up. The order taker had to ask someone if that was possible (really?), only to find out that no, they couldn't do that (really??). It's bad enough that they couldn't do something so simple as heat the items but there was no apology or anything resembling customer awareness with these two idiots. Compounding this idiocy, we weren't even notified that our lattes were ready as we sat waiting on the patio. With all the good bakery cafes in the Del Mar area, I will never return to Darshan. The almond croissant was buttery and delicious. Chocolate croissant, less so, because the 2 bars of chocolate tend to be in same, overlapping spot, making the rest feel rather plain. Croissants ($5-6), speciality pastries (start at $7.50) but unfortunately very small in proportion to price. Otherwise, friendly staff and a clean cafe. & worth stopping by if you're craving coffee and sweets, as you drive into Del Mar. read more

NAPOLEON WOULD NOT BE HAPPY! I stopped in and ordered two Napoleon's (mille feuille) and a baguette to go. The topping was pretty but the pastry layers were over baked to the point of being burnt and not in any way flaky. The baguette was overly browned. The pudding filling was overly thick and clumped. At $8 each, they should at least be edible! On site I had the mango smoothie was good but what a poor execution of the pastry and bread (notice another reviewer has noted this as well so maybe not just bad luck). Champagne bakery nearby did a good job with substituting. Yuk! read more

Finally stopped by here this weekend after wanting to check it out for quite sometime. Overall was disappointed for the most part and feel that you can get a better value at a lot of other places in the area. The main highlight was the iced vanilla latte as it wasn't overpowering on sweetness. The Napoleon we ordered also had a flavorful tipping though the dough layers underneath left a lot to be desired. We also tried the apple turnover and we felt that the inner filling was like a gelatinated apple sauce that didn't really have much flavor. Perhaps their breads, quiches and sandwiches could be good but I probably won't bother coming back for some time. They also didn't really seem to be doing much on the social distancing front on their patio. read more

I don't normally write reviews, however I felt the need with this one.I walked in just in time to hear the owner chastising an employee. Now I completely understand why she isn't able to hold on to staff. The lack of respect she showed this employee is enough to keep me away, however the croissant was pretty bad too. Completely burnt! I understand they need to be dark however this croissant was so hard it completely flaked apart when I tried to bite into it and the inside was almost dehydrated. I don't know what's going on with this place. Perhaps changed owners. Quality of the croissants and other pastries and tuna sandwich on focaccia is superb. It's also expensive but I'm okay to pay these prices for quality pastries. But what really irks me for the last 6 months is that the service is terrible. The baristas are all super slow (like 10 minutes for one mocha), and the counter staff today took, I'm not kidding, 12 minutes to pack and sell me 6 pastries, after dumping one of them over in the box and ruining a $8.25 pastry. And I had to ask for a new one. They are all young, sweet and stupid. She couldn't remember my order 3 times. They really need to hire better people with experience and who are fast behind the counter. Cute bakery, friendly staff but for 2 sandwiches, 2 drinks & 2 croissants it was very expensive for what you get, over $50. The sandwiches were small and served on a tiny 6inch paper plate. The person I was with ordered a tuna sandwich and it had maybe a tablespoon of tuna on each side. We ended up asking to pay for another serving of tuna but they kindly gave us more. They also didn't have any napkins. They should have had an employee run up the street to Vons to buy napkins. The chocolate croissant barely had any chocolate in it. I really wanted to like this place but for paying over $50 I want a plate large enough for even a small sandwich and definitely napkins. read more

This place has the best almond croissants in town - no, actually in the world! They are so good and popular that they often run out but the almond croissants are SO good when you finally get hold of them that the place is worth a 5 star only for that! Otherwise I would go down a star due to their extreme prices, but I do understand. I am sure they also have to pay an extreme rent in Del Mar so... Their sandwhiches are really good, as is the other baked goods and their baguettes, top class. And it's so awesome that you can watch the bakers bake and prepare the dough! So the bread is delicious but the customer service sucks and the business is run poorly. Most of the people who work there are not so nice and there is one particularly grumpy older woman. Also they run out of bread, ran out on NYE by 11:00am. How silly to have such a delicious product and not make enough? More bread equals more profit and happy customers who come back. Also the egg sandwich is good when served warm but the employees also serve it cold, not so delicious. They need some business advice and they'd be a more profitable operation. read more

Great patio seating area- Very Dog Friendly space. Welcoming front counter bakery area and nice seating area inside. We had the poblano and the mushroom quiche - it was tasty , with a delicious crust, and the quiche is cooked to a very loose jiggly consistency- I prefer quiche cooked a bit more firm. The chocolate croissant is divine. The vanilla latte is bold and the flavorful espresso stands out. The ham sandwich is soooo good. The service can be slow. Normally I grab & go but I walked over with my son so we decided to eat there. The restaurant is filthy inside and out. It appears to not have been cleaned in a long long time, It's just plain grimy and worn out. The "front door" is always open and on a blustery day it is uncomfortable. The wait to heat up the jalapeño ham and cheese croissant and make a cappuccino took around 20 minutes, I ended up having the time to eat my other croissant before the other items even came out. The chocolate almond croissant had okay flavor, nothing special. The jalapeño ham and cheese croissant had good flavor but was burnt. The cappuccino was 4.25 and came in a very small cup. It was extremely bitter and even putting sugar in the drink didn't fix it. I ended up spending 20 dollars for this meal. read more

This place is absolutely fantastic! Best croissants I've ever had in my life. They have delicious espresso with non dairy options which I love. The customer service has been excellent. At my first visit I learned that they take pride in having fresh high quality pastries and based on the conversation, it was clear that the staff really admired the owner and the dedication they put into the business. It was great being able to see the chef making croissants fresh as the kitchen has a wide window for customers to see in. I'm drooling just thinking about the pastries and how buttery and flakey the outside is and how soft and pillowy the inside is. Hahahah I drive about 20-30 minutes just to get these little drops of heaven. Definitely recommend! read more
