Based on the giant "French Bakery" sign outside, I expected more of a traditional patisserie vibe, but inside felt more like an eclectic California cafe. Authentic chai sign, hanging bead entrance, patio setup, mixed decor. At some point I kind of wanted it to pick a lane. The pastries were the strongest part for me. I used to love this bakery and would have easily given it 5 stars. The food, coffee, and service were consistently excellent through last year and until around April or May of this year. There were two baristas in particular who were outstanding -- a petite barista who was always warm and attentive, and a taller barista who made excellent coffee and also provided great service. I haven't seen either of them recently, and I honestly miss them. One of the newer male baristas has also been great. His customer service is always friendly, and I've really noticed how much his coffee-making has improved over time. Unfortunately, the overall experience has become much more inconsistent lately. Some pastries seem noticeably drier than before, and I have also experienced incorrect orders, staff who seem unfamiliar with the menu, customers being asked to wait while a staff member uses a personal phone, and even repeated yawning while serving customers. I understand that prices have increased with inflation, but with higher prices, I also expect the quality and service to remain at the same level. I'm not writing this because I want to stop coming here. I actually really want to keep coming back, and I hope the bakery can return to the quality and professionalism it had before. The sandwich was tasty and fresh the coffee was fresh. The salted focaccia was wonderful I was Larry at first but it gave the sandwich a nice tangy earthy flavor. The heirloom tomatoes were fresh I got them on the side cuz you never really know. The customer service was good. A little pricey for some really small sandwich but it was worth it. Visited Darshan Bakery in Del Mar today, and unfortunately the customer service was very disappointing. The bakery wasn't busy, but we stood at the register for several minutes without being greeted or acknowledged, even though two employees saw us. When someone finally took our order, there was no greeting or apology for the wait. The coffee was good, and the desserts were enjoyable, but the lack of basic customer service made the experience disappointing. I hope they improve the customer experience going forward. read more

Neighborhood reliable staple. I love their selection and variety. My go to is their tuna sandwich on their homemade focaccia bread. I noticed the bread is slightly less oily than usual, which is a plus for me. Their dessert pastries are okay depending on what you like, but I wouldn't say anything in particular is stand out for me. I've tried a good amount of their sweets, but I've never ordered anything twice apart from their savory sandwiches. Staff is helpful and friendly. You get to see the baking in process at times with their big window that opens up to a kitchen area. The bathroom is around the corner, but not a big deal at all. Big plus is that they are dog friendly. For a casual hang with a friend or a quick bite to eat, it's a nice place. Parking can be tricky on busier times, but typically street parking isn't as tricky right around here in comparison to if you keeping driving up closer to the restaurants. read more

I had the Caprese baguet and it was super crispy and full of popping flavors ! The service here was very welcoming and warming. I enjoy the view of the worker making the freshest pastrys. The price for the Baget was very affordable too. I definitely coming back tomorrow!! read more

One year later and I'm back! I came at 3pm. The interior is really pretty and I do love how the light shines through the seating area. They also had a few books in the corner, I believe. It is clean, organized, but they do not have water cups for you. Maybe if you go at 3pm, you have to ask for it. They also have outdoor seating. Also, Yelp says there's an ocean view....No, you're not on the beach and you can't really see the water either because of the building in front. For a French bakery it didn't have many French baked goods-- for some reason lots of scones, cookies, cinnamon bun, etc. Yes, they had pain aux raisins, some pain au chocolat, plain croissants, and jambon croissant. They also had sandwiches-- some served on crispy French baguette and others served on wheat bread. The worker was kind. I ordered their tuna sandwich and she asked me "if there were any in the front?" I said "No, just turkey." And she replied that "it was okay and they would make it fresh for me." That was nice. But then the total for the sandwich was $15. I was shocked because it was more expensive than a turkey club at Board & Brew. What am I paying such a steep price for? I thought that maybe I'll get bang for my buck -- yeah right. The tuna sandwich was the most pathetic sandwich I laid eyes on and tasted. The description said there was tuna, rémoulade, cheese (can't remember exact one), arugula, balsamic on wheat bread. This sandwich was more arugula and balsamic than ANYTHING. I can still taste the bitterness. The size of the tuna was shocking as it was only maybe a teaspoon amount on the bread, check the photo. There was no rémoulade aka mayonnaise based sauce with cornichons, herbs, and sometimes capers. I'm so disappointed and honestly pissed as well that I paid $15 for this. Now that I've cooled off a little I came back to give some feedback. Their food and pastry items need to have the prices written on the menu. So that there's no shock or surprise. If you run out of something, just tell the customer so that they can choose something else if they wish. Yeah, I don't mind paying a little extra if the quality is there. There was no quality here and there was very little quantity as well. If this is how your tuna sandwich recipe is written, re write it because it's straight robbery! They were ok the first time I tried Darshan Bakery, so if you want to-- go and eat some pastries and have your morning coffee/lattes. They are just ok, nothing extraordinary like some French bakeries. But heed my warning and do not order the sandwiches. They are 1000% not worth it!! read more

Cafe itself is super cute, easy parking, free WiFi, lots of tables, open kitchen. I was wondering why it was so empty compared to the other places in the area on a holiday weekend (Mother's Day) until I went to the register to order. They were out of bread at 1 pm (so I'm guessing the food is good), so I couldn't order a sandwich unless I wanted a premade tuna sandwich in the fridge. I asked if she could heat it & she said they don't heat their sandwiches (even though they have an oven & could easily do so). Met my group of gal pals this am at 11:30. Not very busy but no one at counter. Could see someone in the bakery portion in the back & someone at the espresso machine. No one greeted me for about 8 minutes until finally she poked her head out & said she'd be with me soon. No smile. When she did take my order also no smile Tasted sample of scone sitting on counter-very dry. My drink was good-Bombay Latte a specialty of theirs. No one in my group liked their food choices-the quiche was runny in the middle like uncooked eggs. The pastry my other friend got was also on the dry side. We were drawn in by the sign that said "French Bakery," expecting a variety of French pastries, but were extremely disappointed when we walked in saying "Dashan Bakery." The selection was very limited. We asked for a chocolate cookie, and the barista told us only chocolate croissants were left. When we received it, it was cold, so we asked for it to be warmed up. After cutting it in half, we realized it was just a plain croissant--completely different from what we ordered! When my husband took it back, the barista casually said that only plain croissants were available. Seriously? If that's the case, why say there are chocolate croissants at all? On top of that, I ordered a large vanilla latte for $7, only to find that it was the same size as a Starbucks grande. The taste? Nothing special--certainly not worth the price. Overall, a frustrating and disappointing experience. We won't be coming back! read more

WOW! We absolutely love this place. I was shocked at all the bad reviews and honestly I think people are judging too hard. I have a review page on Instagram (blondiezbitez) and I try many cafes... this one is the ultimate BEST in San Diego. Their pastries are amazing (cheese croissant and the focaccia are our go-to's). I've tried local croissants in Italy and these were up to par with the authentic Italian ones. Honestly every bite of the croissant I was mind blown. Early this morning, I had the unfortunate experience of being assisted by one of the rudest staff members I've encountered, 'Aneli'. There was not even a smile or a simple "good morning." Even when I tried to smile at her, nothing back. I asked whether they had any juice or smoothies available--specifically the mango one, which I know is one of their signature and delicious options. The response I received was, "If you don't see it, we don't have it." It was 8 a.m., and I understand that not everything may be prepared yet. However, a courteous explanation would have gone a long way. There were barely any customers at that time, so it was disappointing to be met with such dismissive service first thing in the morning. The products here are great, but the customer service this morning did not reflect that quality. I hope management addresses this, as attitude and hospitality truly matter. read more

Visited this place a few times. Besides from the food and coffee being way too expensive for the quality you are getting, they do not have a good selection and the bare minimum service was subpar. I am not against paying more for quality but the pastries are not even close to a premium bakery, the coffee is nothing special, the bagguettes aren't bad but not worth the money. On top of that we were sitting outside and the person at the counter called our name once and didn't even bother to come let us know our food was ready. It was sitting there for 5 mins. I've been going to this bakery for the last 3 months and always loved their scones and cinnamon pull apart muffins. For some reason about 30 days ago the baker has been burning the pastries. At first I thought maybe they had a temporary staffing shortage. Unfortunately, the problem has continued and the burnt pastries are still being displayed and sold. After looking at older reviews, overcooked or burnt pastries has been an issue for some time :( The purpose of posting this review is to inform the owner of this problem. Owner, contact me and tell me your addressing the problem of the baker who burns your pastries. I'll be very happy to go back to your bakery and give it another try. Darshan was a cute place to spend a weekend morning! The Indian Chai was really nice, and you can watch them make their croissants so you know it's fresh. I enjoyed my almond croissant, my bread pudding was more mid. Great service, they heated up our pastries and cut them for us too. read more
