We came down to the MS coast during the week of Cruisin the Coast and heard about Darwell's through DD&D. Before we even walked in, someone greeted us outside the restaurant. Once we walked in, a gentleman was there to explain the menu and even let us try some samples. The food was awesome! Once we sat down, your staff asked us multiple times if we needed anything. We loved the eclectic decor and the live music (my 2 year old daughter loved it the most) so much that we ended up eating there 3 times in one week. Living in Chicago it is VERY hard to find restaurants and people that take the time to greet you genuinely, help with menu options, etc. Your food and customer service is outstanding. Great food! Way overpriced! When you can get a cup of gumbo at Commander's Palace in New Orleans cheaper than Darwell's something is wrong.

I used to support this business until my expensive sunglasses were stolen recently. I had been gone for a few minutes at most when I returned. When I inquired the staff got very defensive and rude. I was not suspicious of the staff up until that point. Then when I asked to look through the trash (because I didn't think they had stolen it) I was given grief until they finally agreed and said, "Fine but don't make a mess!" read more

Love this place! The crawfish étouffée is amazing. I moved to the Gulf Coast from south Florida a year ago and Darwell's is one of the only reasons I agreed to stay in Long Beach!! Service is wonderful and everyone is extremely friendly. My kids love the spaghetti and meatballs and rice with gravy. They always hope that papa D is around to draw on their drink cups!! What a super cute place tucked off the main drag in Long Beach. Very Austin, Texas-ish. (Which is a good thing!!) I've been twice in one week, my gf three times in a week! She swears by the Pasta Yum Yum... with shrimp, TONS of crab and angelhair pasta and a cream sauce and mushrooms. Pretty tasty, but I loooooved my crab and shrimp quesadillas (you can make 'em however you want! Very cool!). Gumbo is tasty... but the first time it seemed brown-based and the gumbo today was tomato and okra based. Nonetheless, packed with seafood. I had the grilled tuna sandwich today... OMG... super duper good. A huge ass hunk of tuna... grilled just right. I put a little of the house Vidalia onion dressing on it... holy shit... so freaking good!! Great sweet tea too. We always sit outside in the funky courtyard/patio... today we were treated to a piano player and the owner's Dad. Pop's even draws on the styrofoam cups for the ladies. Cuteness. The owner (whom i am told used to be the chef at Cappys) is very accessible and vocal... super nice dude. Not like this place needs my review because everyone else loves it so much.. but Darwell's is the bomb-diggity! this is like the best place we have eaten in a long time. We are new to the area and heard about it and then saw Guy Fieri came here, so we were instantly sold. Just by the way it looks outside you know it's gonna be good... tons of cars everywhere and it looks like a shack or something.. but it's way bigger once you get in the door and there was only a 5 minute wait. The smell hits you before you even get near the front door and it is good! We got the lunch sized crawfish etoufee and shrimp creole. YUM!! perfect size. a large could probably feed two people with normal appetite. We have been wanting creole/cajun food since we got here and this was it. No need to go anywhere else. So much crawfish and grilled shrimp in that etoufee. My only disappointment was there were no brownies left. Didn't really need it anyway. I can't wait to come back here many times. Went to Darwells while on a work trip and stopped in for lunch. We were greeted by the owner, Darwell, telling us that nothing is fried and all is freshly made. Great. The menu is all over the walls so its quite daunting to go through to find what you are craving. I decided on the grilled shrimp sandwich. My coworkers got the grilled chicken sandwich and the tuna sandwich. The sweet tea is super sweet so get ready for that if you're not used to it. I am but I kinda wished I asked for half and half. Our food arrived and well, I was not impressed with the shrimp. They had no flavor even after adding the separate sauce. It was just lacking. The bun was way too bready for the tiny shrimp which made it feel like I was eating just the bread for most of the meal. I also got the mash potatoes and gravy and oh my what a salt lick! It was so salty I couldn't eat them. My coworkers raved about their food though and so once again I ordered wrong. That happens to me. But a word of advice; do not sit in the front. Every new guest that comes through the door is greated by the owner with the schpeel about no fried food and everythings fresh. It's like he's on repeat or something. So that was really annoying. I would sit in the back next time. I like the feel of the place though and if I venture back to Gulfport I will try it again for redemption. read more

This is definitely a hidden treasure. I didn't know beforehand that this place was featured on Diners drive in ' s and dives. I can see why. I had their seafood special Mahi Mahi. It was awesome. AMAZING!! Everything was fresh and well prepared. I had the Yum Yum it was filled with shrimp, crawfish and huge pieces of crab meat !! My husband had the burger with crawfish ettouffe is was also amazing. However our greatest and best surprise were the crab cakes. Filled with fresh crab meat and the sauce was awesome!! I need more stars for this place. We had seen it on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives so we knew we wanted to try it out when we moved to Gulfport, MS with the Navy. Our sponsors brought us there on our first night in town. Darwell's was also the last place we ate before leaving Gulfport for our new assignment. There were many, many trips in between. Mediocre at best. I had the blackened shrimp with rice and sauce over the redfish. Overpriced, but would have been OK if it was delicious. Unfortunately, I thought the sauce was virtually tasteless. Yes, yes the reviews are true. This place is everything everyone else said it is. Delicious. Fun. Cheap. The crawfish e'stouffe is incredibly fantastic. So freaking good. I want more. Now. They had some kind of delicious looking apple bottom brownie at the counter. Normally I don't think those things look incredibly amazing but I think I'll go back and try it bc I found myself regretting that I didnt. And more crawfish e'stouffe. The staff was rude, I got the CrawDaddy burger and it was the size of a burger kind whopper jr. It looked nothing like the picture. It was a hamburger only, no drink, no chips, no fries, nothing and it was 14.00 and some change. There were 3 crawfish total on it. Barely any sauce, and It was overcooked and extremely dry. The food looks nothing like the pictures they post. I was so excited to try this place after following them on facebook. It was a great disappointment. We met someone in the parking lot as we were leaving and told them of our experience and recommended some place else to them. Unless they have changed in the past few months. I wont recommend them. I waited to write this review, so that I could write it after I had calmed down. We literally left there and went and picked up a pizza, because the amount of food you got was pitiful. Passing through, looking for a good place to eat. Found Darwell's on Yelp. What a great little place. Very casual and fun. You order your food at the counter and seat yourself. When we walked in, we were greeted by a very pleasant woman who explained the menu. She offered me a sample of crawfish etoufee. I had never tasted that before and it was fabulous! I ended up ordering the Taste of Darwell's which included gumbo, creole and the crawfish etoufee. All good with my favorite being the etoufee. Very attentive and friendly staff. My husband ordered the pulled pork which was also good. So glad we stopped here! read more
