Everything u have heard about their crawfish etouffee is true. FANTASTIC. It's a "curious " place, papa D is always around and welcomes you!..the cashier is such a character,loved him . A lot of things to choose from...a LOT...and the ambiance has two sides : dark with xmas light and cool art and outside with a live band and the long beach weather. In my group someone ordered the shrimps and grits and she says they were good. We ordered the crawfish etouffee and the shrimp creole. The version of the etouffee is lovely if you like creamy things. Great flavour! It comes with rice and bread to go wit that creamy heavenly sauce. The big portion I think is more than fine for a person because it's a lot of cream..and you can get tired of the flavour. Okay, tried Darwell's a couple of years ago and was not impressed. Recently, my wife lunched there with cohorts and her experience enticed me to tryit again. We stopped in for a quick dinner and found it was a slow night. I had hamburger steak with mashed potatoes and gravy, and my wife had a prime rib plate with a side of grilled asparagus. The food was okay, a bit salty, and the portions were satisfactory. However, for all the notoriety and accolades, I don't get it. Not much on ambiance, no real service to speak of, and the prices are pretty stiff. All in all, my recommendation is to try it if you must, but there are much better restaurants in the area. read more

Had an issue with a pickup order. I ordered one item they apparently don't serve anymore. It was on the menu from their website listed on Apple Maps! The person on the phone repeated my order and she included the discontinued item. That's fine. An honest mistake. But clearly their workers don't know their menu very well. I got home and realized we were missing the one item (brisket sandwich). I wasn't mad about it. I returned to simply ask about why I didn't get what I had ordered, and the owner, cashier, and waiter all were upset with me like I made the mistake and were clearly upset with me. They told me on the phone that item was something they were going to make. They did not offer an apology. Didn't want to take ownership of one of their employees' mistakes. Which again I don't care if someone makes a mistake. But you would think a business would take ownership and care that they messed up. read more

Darwell's Café was our first meal while in the Gulfport/Biloxi/Long Beach area for a few days. We chose, it based on seeing it on DDD. It is kind of a quirky place, but fun. Temperatures were a little cool in early November and the place was fairly empty when we were there for dinner. We ordered plenty of food; gumbo, shrimp and grits and a crawdad burger. This was our first exposure to gumbo in this locale. I was expecting brown roux based gumbos and was disappointed by this version. (I will say that I warmed up to it as the visit progressed, mainly because I had some much better ones). Darwell's gumbo is more tomatoey than I expected with just a little okra. The crawfish in it was way overcooked but plentiful. Seafood flavor was really lacking. It was better than I make it sound, just not my favorite style. It was barely warm when served. Nearly cold food was the order of the day. Ms T's shrimp and grits were not as warm as the gumbo. We found the grits to be way too cheddary, overwhelming everything, the shrimp was almost unseasoned and also way overcooked. There was no hint of the advertised tasso and there was really no seafood flavor. No one would return for this if they knew better. My crawdad burger was OK. The etouffee was very thick and creamy almost to the point of being like Cheese-Whiz. Again, the etouffee was not roux based, but was the best thing of the night. I would order etouffee again, by itself. It really does not belong on a burger, neither benefit from the merger. The place has promise. It has a fun vibe, the food is clearly homemade, just maybe not to our (Chef Paul Prudomme influenced) tastes. We both found it overrated for what we had. We might have been happier if the food had been served hot. If I am back in Long Beach, I would give them another chance by ordering etouffee and asking them to make sure it is hot. I am being generous with three stars for our meal. We are forming an opinion that DDD's are no better than chance in assuring a great meal. read more

For me Darwell's didn't live up to all the hype. Walking in we were greeted by the owner. He is a very nice guy, maybe a little full of himself, but a nice guy none the less. The menus are posted on three different walls. Lot's of specials to choose from. The menu on the website doesn't even come close to covering all the choices. One of the things that I didn't care for was that I really felt rushed making my decision, The counter is at the front entrance and with 4 employees asking what you want and people pouring in behind you its a little overwhelming. We ordered and found a seat outside to listen to the live band. Within 3 to 4 minutes our food arrived. I had ordered the crawfish etouffee with blackened shrimp and rice. The etouffee was pretty good but the blackened shrimp were overcooked and rubbery. For the price I paid I would expect everything to be cooked to order. Not ladled out of a pan and topped with shrimp that had been precooked. Wish I had ordered something else. My wife ordered the crabcakes. They came with a side of etouffee and green beans. I tasted the crabcake and it was fantastic. Very little filler with big pieces of crab. The green beans were very good as well. This is what I should have ordered. Don't know if I would go back. Lots of other great places to eat at along the coast. read more

This place is a true hidden gem. Granted, it was featured on the Food Network's Diners, Drive-ins & Dives so it is in a sense famous, but it is located in downtown Long Beach, MS where there's not a whole lot else going on. And for that matter, a lot of the places featured on DD&D are overrated, but this place truly is worth checking out. Pretty much everything on the menu is quite delicous. A friend and I came here after she found out about this place online. Being indecisive, we ordered a small plate of practically everything on the menu so we could sample and share. It was among one of the best meals I've had on the Mississippi coast. I give high praise to this place because even something as simple and bland as spaghetti is so good that I actually crave it. In fact, the second time I came back here, I drove the 15 to 20 miles just to have some of the spaghetti, even though their BBQ is what they're known for. One of my top 10 places that we've visited ever! I had red beans and rice with cornbread. The beans were fantastic... perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of heat. Hubby chose the grits with brisket and loved it. In his words. What grits are supposed to taste like!. It was a beautiful night so we sat outside with beautiful twinkling lights. Hard place to find but totally worth getting lost. We go about once a week now! yaeger burgers. WOW..... So we love these dives that we find from time to time and this was sure to impress. Some of the places we've been that Guy has visited on DDD have been "pretty good", but this was just fantastic. A young guy with an accent, Adrian, greeted us at the door and explained the menus; good, better, best. He was so enthusiastic and explained the "best" menu in great detail, telling us that the Blackened Mahi Mahi, served on a bed of Basmati Rice, topped with Crawfish Étouffée & Shrimp, with grilled French bread and a side of green beans, is what Guy Fieri tried. We couldn't resist. Yes, the "best" menu is pretty pricey; prices that I usually pay at upscale restaurants, but it was completely worth it. The portion was very generous; enough for my husband and I to share and both be full. This dish is spicy, but not too bad. The sauce was creamy and perfectly seasoned. The seafood was very fresh. The French bread was very flavorful and great dipped in the sauce from the étouffée. The green beans were very hot (temp wise, be careful!), but simple: buttery & bacon-y (yum). The sweet tea was the best I've had; almost as good as my great grandmother's (we were fighting over the togo cup in the car driving away). I ordered water to drink and the choices were (I think?): tap - free, bottled - $1 (no refills), bottled - $2 (refills, they will give you another bottle). We have actually searched for restaurants back home (JAX, FL) that are BYOB and the choices are slim to none, so seeing a place like this that is BYOB is awesome and I am mad we had to leave it behind. It was cool seeing everyone hanging out under umbrellas, listening to live music and drinking beer or wine that they brought. Really saves $ too, not having to pay marked up prices of alcohol from restaurants. All in all, this place made an impression on us with the flavorful food and fun, laid back atmosphere. It's 4-star cuisine in a shack! a really cool shack! Oh and FYI, we got there around 7ish and after we got our food, one of the waiters told us that they sold out of what we ordered shortly after. While I want to give any place a fair chance, I'm super disappointed in Darwell's. The food isn't good. The wait staff seem untrained. I have visited here three times to try to catch it on a different day, it seems to have such a following! Today when I got ready to type this review, I went through to read if anyone else had unpleasant experiences. The owner, Darwell, goes on almost every negative review and marks it as funny. That is such a disrespectful thing to do! Literally. Also he wrote a 5 Star review for his own restaurant. Come on, man. Aaaaand Guy Fieri's restaurant is in the toilet, so I don't feel like that has much staying power. I just wish the owner wasn't disrespectful, that just seems to really catch my feelings. This past weekend (this occured saturday 5/6/24) for our anniversary, we took a day trip to Ms Gulf Coast. We decided to go to Long Beach, Ms and tried Darwell's Happiness Cafe for the first time. The food was descent but our visit there quickly went down hill when some people came into the restaurant and used the restroom and did not order any food. The owners quickly became irate. Yelling and cursing loudly. Telling them to get the F@!K out!!! It was a big unnecessary production!!! I understand the reasoning he was upset BUT but the means of delivery was unacceptable. If they would talk like that to them, then they would talk like that to me!!!! The other customers that arrived right behind this confusion and was ordering during this screaming, yelling encounter were just as put off. The lady just looked at me in shock and disbelief while shaking her head in disgust. And if the cursing and yelling wasn't enough, the woman ( who I now know was the owners wife - Nettie) there followed the people out and mooned them in the parking lot. But I see from other reviews that literally showing themselves is just a common occurance they do. So having all this said, the food was good (not great) but the experience left ALOT to be desired!!!! Rudeness met with rudeness doesn't solve anything. And then top it off after this happened, the owner NEVER made any attempt to apologize to the paying customers for the outburst and situation. Again showing there was no respect for paying customers as well as non paying!! Please hear me when I say....... STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!!!!!!!!! When I left a review on their FB page the wife's (Nettie) response was a smug and still unapologetic "thank you!!" STILL UNWILLING TO APOLOGIZE FOR THEIR RUDE AND UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR!!!! And upon further investigation the incident of the wife exposing herself outside to the people has happened before. I even read in the facebook review that the owner himself has also done this as well. And the rude hostile cursing screaming rants seem to be a normal occurrence!!! We like to make a point to find and support small locally owned businesses but this one right here...... well .... We loved our time at Darwells. Such an eclectic place starting from the parking lot - we took so many pictures outside and inside the resturant. The shrimp and grits were cheesy (looks like a lot in the picture but it was a perfect amount) with really flavorful shrimp. We also ordered prime rib sandwich and grilled reddish with shrimp etofee on top. Everything was flavored just right and the meat was tender. My husband said the redfish was the best he's ever had. Service was amazing and we loved being allowed to taste test a couple things to help make our choice. Don't miss a chance to check this resturant out, you won't be disappointed! Our first time back to Darwell's since he reopened. Omg! Where do I begin? The food was amazing. Even better than before which I didn't think was possible. I had the Redfish Nawlins which was so tasty. It came with a deliciously seasoned redfish, crawfish etouffee with blackened shrimp, topped with crab meat over a bed of rice. Delicious! My husband had the filet mignon poboy. The sandwich was a generous size. He said it was very good! But, you can't leave without trying one of the desserts. The desserts are phenomenal! Great seafood, great southern cooking, live band at night, and despite having a fair amount of real estate, its still got an amazing hole in the wall atmosphere to it (it was featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives). I recommend something with the crawfish étouffée on it. The crab cakes are awesome too. And you can't really go wrong with whatever their special is for that day. I read the reviews and debated whether to risk a stop at Darwell's. To be honest, I was in search of a shirt that said "Long Beach" on it because, well, I live in Long Beach so we threw caution to the wind and went for it. We hit the place in mid afternoon and it was a ghost town. The owner greeted us and gave us a pitch for the specials on the menu. He suggested spaghetti and meatballs - not something I want to eat (1) in 90+ degree heat and humidity and (2) at a restaurant in the South close to the beach. I'm here for the seafood, dammit! I ordered the Crawfish Etofee (sic) and the MU ordered the CrawDaddy burger. I kinda liked my dish. It was thick, creamy sauce with crawdads over rice. The MU liked his burger too. Both were mightly big portions and I couldn't finish it. The chef came out and talked with us for quite a while. I cannot get over how friendly people are in the South. No one in California would give you that much time or information about their personal lives. It's refreshing, actually. I did not buy a shirt, however. They had the owner's face on it and it was HUGE (his face, not the shirt). Good service, nice people, okay food. Not someplace I'd need to see again, but a memorable experience was had. read more

Definitely do not go. they make you tip before you even sit down (big mistake) and the crawdad etouffee burger was awful. the "barbecued beans" were pork and beans out of a can with barbecue sauce on them. burger was dry, and from frozen. you eat on paper plates with plastic silverware and when I said something about this they just came and took the food, did not offer me a refund for the food(which I did not eat) and kept their tip which they took in advance for the horrible service.
