The kraut is grilled and really tasty... so much better than what comes in a jar or, egads, a can. The salad bar included spaetzel and well done German potato salad. The breaded Jaeger Schnitzel was covered with a homemade, thick brown mushroom gravy and reminded us of wonderful dining experiences in Germany many years ago. Authentic home style German cuisine is very difficult to find in Montana, so this place really rang our bell. We had dinner here the other night and it was fabulous, except for two things. Hubby got the Fricadellen, which his Oma used to make for him, and he loved it. Sadly, the spaetzle was lukewarm and boring but it was the red cabbage that was the problem- it didn't taste vinegary and actually seemed like it might have been scrapings from the bottom of the pot. However, his entree was excellent and that's the most important part. I had the schnitzel on a pretzel bun with fries and I never got to the fries, the schnitzel was stupendous. Our friend got the pork shank and thought she was in heaven. All said, we're going to try again on our next visit to Spokane... because the entrees were fabulous! read more

My wife and I ate here last night for the first time, we were there at four in the afternoon and the staffing was short so it took a while for our order to be taken; the waitress was very pleasant though. Mary had the Jager schnitzel and I had the combination platter which included schnitzel and three different house made brats along with spätzle and sauerkraut. Each meal included a green salad and bread; the salads were standard as was the bread. The brats were good, but nothing special as were the Schnitzel. Our review may be a bit tainted because Mary's sister in law Renate is full German and makes the best schnitzel we have ever had. We would come back. read more

Have been to Germany more than a few times. The food there is incredible. Fast forward to this place in North Spokane. If you want the real German food, this is your kind of place. The food, sevice, and prices are perfect. Not only do they have " Farmers" (gypsy) snitzel, but the signature, pork shanks are just like The Fatherland. Even the water is good! Two of us went in here and we ordered three meals and two appetizers. Our table looked like a delicious buffet. The Jagger schnitzel was just perfect! We also had the Gypsy schnitzel It was just as delicious. The brat sampler is a definite must try. Of course you should not pass on the pretzel. Gave away our table we had reserved for over a month. Extremely condescending and rude remarks and interaction with the waitress when we sat at the only other table that would accommodate our party of eleven. We were told we had to move as there was another party coming in an hour. We were then directed to a table for only 6 and the bizarre, rude behavior on the part of the waitress escalated. It would have been nice if they would have not given away our table and if we had experienced decent customer service and at least an apology for the mistake instead of the rude, combative attitude we received. Add to that the food was sub-par and you have a mix of a genuinely terrible Easter brunch experience. Needless to say, we will not be returning again. read more

My wife and I have enjoyed all the different meals we've eaten here. All the meals has been exceptionally fresh and tasty. Order the salad bar and grab the potato salad, a hammy, lightly tangy salad that's easy to overeat before the entree arrives. All the entrees we've enjoyed have been delicious. 1st time here. Came in with family, about 7 of us and decided to sit in the bar. There was only one waitress waiting the entire bar! She did a fantastic job, even though it took a little longer than sitting in the dining room. I had the standard schnitzel and substituted German potato salad... that was ok, but it wasn't warm (waitress told me that). Took one bite of the schnitzel.... OH BOY.. it was fantastic. The pork sauce was fantastic.. It was just all mouthwatering. Das Stein Haus has an excellent selection of German beers.. most of us had the Paulander Oktoberfest lager. Excellent body and flavor. One step into this restaurant was al I needed to call this the most accurately named restaurant I've ever been in. Steins line the walls of this German themed establishment. Earlier during my visit, I won a set of gift certificates to numerous Spokane establishments, to include DSH, so my wife and I decided to treat her parents to lunch. Nobody had ever been there, so it was nice for everyone to experience it for the first time together. The first thing you see when you step inside is a hallway leading to two separate halves of the restaurant. One half leads to the bar, where I can only assume had a boisterous crowd partaking of German biers while a Bundesliga match played. We went through the other door. Inside, we were greeted with a clean, quiet establishment that we had all to ourselves. Our server led us to a booth and took our order. She was polite and nice the entire visit. My family ordered schnitzel, because they were at a German restaurant. I ordered the fish and chips, because I'm a contrarian. At the corner of the dining area is a nice salad bar. Everything either tasted good, or was described as tasting good. I also had a weisse bier, which was heavier than I was expecting, but tasted good nonetheless. Every time we are visiting the folks in Northern Idaho we have to make a pilgrimage over to Spokane to get German food. We have gone to the same place the last 15 years Das Stein House, this is a new name but it has the same great German food. Schnitzel, Spaetzle and Brats, that is what keeps us coming back. This time around I got the combo plate which included all the above. The Schnitzel was big, fresh, tender and tasty, I got three types of Brats, all very good and a heaping helping of that German pasta called Spaetzle smothered in gravy, yum. Along with the name change and refreshed decor another change is the addition of Hawaiian dishes to the menu. Not sure why the Hawaiian was added or if it should stay but there it was all the same. The wife tried the special, Hawaiian Schnitzel I believe she said it was OK but would not order it again, she was glad she had her German Spaetzle and sauerkraut. read more

Guten Tag! I was struggling on a Friday evening for a spot of supper. You see old cheap, when it comes to dining; there are simply very few agreeable options in the city of Spokane, Washington. At long last, I have decided to try the only German restaurant in town which is Das Stein Haus. The location is not what I would call "Germanic"; it is at a typical American strip mall with nearby charming business establishments such as a nail shop, a hair salon, Subway and Burger King. The interior of the restaurant is better and with a more German feel. They also play traditional German folk music and songs in the background. We were quickly seated and promptly served by a friendly waitress. I was delighted to find out the owner is indeed a German and they make their own sausages and pretzel. The menu seems half authentically German and the other half American. This is to be expected in a city such as Spokane. I want only authentic German food so I tried to order only classical German dishes. Sadly, one of my favorite German food, Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle) is not on the menu. Oh well, it is a rather difficult dish to execute well and it also may not fit the taste of the average Americans. So instead I ordered a sausage simpler, a pretzel, and a classic schnitzel with spaetzle noodles. The sausage simpler was quite tasty with the correct German mustard sauce. The only disappointment is that all of them are basically different variations of a bratwurst. I was rather hoping they will include other kinds of sausages such as bockwurst, weisswurst, knackwurst and so on. The pretzel was fantastic and easily one of the best one I have ever tasted. Neither stood out, but if we came back I would order the bratwurst sampler. Or the pretzel. So we'll give it another try. I would ask for the spaetzle without gravy. It was drenched in gravy. Jenny is a fabulous server. Our son has Autism and he had an impulsive behavior moment, she (Jenny, the server) went above and beyond. Her service was excellent and we explained our son has Autism and she said, " Don't worry about it." I just hope she was happy with the tip and our gratitude. We just had a really bad experience with an agency who used to provide care for our son and she treated us with the utmost dignity and respect and didn't bat an eye lash. She was so compassionate and kind. Not that I'm saying it's okay that our son had a moment but as parents of a 29 year old with autism we are ready for anything. Getting to the food; The food is outstanding it's so delicious!! We love it there and have a great experience every time!! We had the combo plate, pork medallions, and the classic schnitzel!! The ladies in here are so sweet! I have been coming here for years and the food takes awhile but it is 100% worth the wait. The food is delicious and hearty. The beers are great to. The place is clean and they recently remodeled a bit. I highly respect the chef. The Spatzle with Mushroom Gravy is divine. The Schnitzel is the BEST. The Brats are WONDERFUL.
