Oh my gosh, this place is incredible! The service was absolutely top-notch. The restaurant has this amazing vibe and ambiance - classy and hip, all rolled into one. And the food? Oh my gosh, it was absolutely superb! *Chef's Kiss* We were the first people to arrive, which could have been a bummer, but it turned out to be a great experience. Our server was super patient with us since it was our first time there. She gave us some helpful tips and explained the menu items. She even answered all our questions! We started with the Famous Green Beans, the Garlicky Cold "Noods," and some chicken crispy dumplings. I'm not usually a green bean guy, but these were surprisingly good. The chicken crispy dumplings were a really cool twist on gyozas. And the cold garlicky "noods"! I could've had those all by myself and been happy. They were such a great way to start the meal. Most of the entrees are shareable family-style, so the portions are easy for two or more people. As we waited for our entree, I decided to try the Dashi Cooler for a cocktail. It was mellow, refreshing, and a bit tart, but it was a well-crafted drink. I also ordered another cocktail, but I'll tell you more about it later. Our entree of the Love Me or Hate Me Spicy Lamb Cumin arrived with a side of steamed rice. This is definitely a shareable dish. The lamb was so tender and flavorful. The veggies that came with it were seasoned and cooked just right to give them a nice crunch. As we were working this table full of food, I decided to try another cocktail from their specialty menu. I chose the Purple Moon, which is their version of a French 75 with Ube to give it a purple color. It was done really well. I'd definitely order it again on my next visit. According to their menu, happy hour is every day from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Overall, we were so impressed with our visit to Dashi that we were talking about having a birthday dinner there that's not for another few months. I did try to note in the order, maybe it did not go through, I do not have evidence to dispute this and it is their word against mine whether the request was successfully sent. I am only saying it was sent on my end, but maybe it did not go through. As for their comments regarding third party application price markup, I can fiercely vouch that I did not pay more than $4 more and that $4 did not affect my review either way (1.5 green beans, 2.5 two lo Mein, egg drop soup 8 oz. Size not available online menu) The business owners can view the picture of the receipt I included and tell me otherwise if those were not correct prices. There were no delivery fees that I accounted for in my review because I was using Uber 1 and they were nominal. In fact, there was an Uber Eats BOGO Lo Mein coupon used that I am pretty confident is not available in person. So ordering directly would have been much more expensive, without the BOGO Offer, and with either in person table service tipping or delivery from them. I stand by my review. Pricing would have actually been even less appealing without the BOGO coupon which came from a third party. I do not wish to be a "hater". I genuinely did like the food. I complimented the quality. We came in between lunch a dinner and this place is very large inside! They have a nice ambiance with curtains and the dark colors. I would love to see it at night. The menu is family style which we love so we can try different things and share. I originally was craving KUNG PAO CHICKEN and wanted to try the famous green beans - both were wonderful. I would eat the green beans everyday if I could. The half order is very large! Husband loveeeed the LOVE ME OR LOVE ME, HATE ME THE SPICY CUMIN BEFF. Honestly to us nothing was that spicy. It's Chinese New Year today and we wanted to have Chinese food. Our go-to and long-time favorite is @sichuandashi on Thousand Oaks and Jones Maltsberger. We made it to happy hour which ended at 6pm. Dad had Lemonade and Hubby and I both had the happy hour Margaritas. You can order a la carte or choose from the dinner selection for $55. Choose 2 from the cold or warm dishes (Sichuan Cold Noodles and Tangy Sesame Pork Ribs), 1 from the main (Salt & Pepper Fish), and one from the sides (Mama Chen's Tofu). We added a half order of the Savory & Sweet Eggplant as well. There was plenty of tasty food for us, enough for another meal. I've always enjoyed the food and service here. We showed up 15 minutes early for our 12 o'clock reservation on Christmas Day and were greeted and sat promptly! We were sat at a small table in the back corner near the stage which was fine with us. Minute or so later our waiter came over and explained the menu to us and took our drink orders. He quickly came back and we placed our appetizer orders. Short few minutes later our orders started to arrive. First we got the bougie egg drop soup. It was warm and pretty hardy but no flavor at all... so I had to ask for salt n pepper and that definitely helped. Next we got the soup dumplings and they were amazing! Next was the Chengdu wontons in the bangin garlic sauce and they were bangin!! We then received the duck and smashed Cucumbers. The duck was tender and juicy and my wife really enjoyed it, the Cucumbers were unique to say the least... very sour like made with vinegar and there was tofu skin that was strange to me but I still ate them all! Once I was able to get my waiters attention again we ordered cold garlic noodles and sal and pepper fish and another tea. He took my cup and never returned, we did get the rest of the food from someone else and the noodles were great and the fish was amazing! I placed an order for take out -- beef lo mein, boujee egg drop soup, and pork soup dumplings. Around $45 for everything and came out super fast (within 15 minutes). The vibes were super cute and I liked their decor. If you're expecting traditional egg drop soup, you will not like their egg drop soup. It's thinner consistency and not as eggy or creamy. I'd describe it more as a broth. It's not bad, but not what I was expecting either. I actually think this was the most flavorful dish out of the three I ordered. The beef lo mein noodles had no flavor and were bland, and very greasy. But the little fried spring roll they add was super delicious. I was most disappointed in the soup dumplings. The dumplings stuck to each other which I ended up pulling apart and lost the "soup". But there wasn't much soup in it to even begin with -- it was more so dough with meat, and like a tiny teaspoon of soup. And I faced the same flavor issue -- it was bland and very thick consistency? I am from Austin and there is one dish I THOUGHT I couldn't find anywhere else but Austin. I was so wrong! I described what I loved about China Family and the waiter combed the menu and found the closest thing. THAT WAS IT!! I don't have to drive all the way to Austin when I'm in the mood for the VERY spicy fish dish I LOVE!! Now Dashi is my goto!! (Although the dish is a smidge spicer in Austin. But that ok. I came here with my boyfriend for lunchtime and really enjoyed the menu set up. All of the food was delicious, although I will say that the hot and sour soup was nothing like any other hot and sour soup I've ever had (it was missing the sour I think-bland). The green beans and bok choy were excellent as was our main course. Flavoring was right on point with everything! Our waitress was super helpful and welcoming. One strange thing I'd like to note was that I appreciated was the crushed ice and water quality. I am removing one star because I found the interior design and table layout a bit "off". I don't know why but I did not like the vibe inside. I will of course come back for the delicious food (esp for the lunch combo) anyway! Lots of parking available. She made the process so easy and planning events isn't my strong place. She was so helpful and never made me feel like I was bother. Our sever (and I hate I forgot his name) was so nice, patient, and helpful! The food was great. I had the burningman noods so good! Those green beans though - next level! This review is by proxy, as I caught Chef Zhao on her tour of Austin as exclusive chef for Midnight in the Garden. The experience was one-of-a-kind, feeling her warm presence feeding the soul of each dish, an atmosphere more like family than of strangers gathering. I realized I'd never had true Chinese Sichuan cuisine before, and for starters the cured pork was a tour de palate, covering savory, sweet, prickly peppercorn perfection. Chef Zhao was gracious with my questions - where 4 rivers meet, this is the union of flavors and culture. A scallop to follow had Sichuan chimichurri with ginger and garlic atop that perfectly seared delicacy. My favorite was a whole Branzino, perfumed with a slow numbing spice and cooling green onions. New food highs and many other courses to round out a beautifully delightful (and dairy-free) dinner. This meal could not be complete without the most expert pairings from wine curator, purveyor, director of culture and connection, Alex Wheatley Bell. I've been meaning to check out this spot ever since I heard that Sichuan House is its sister restaurant. We got a bunch of dishes and all were yummy. I can't say I was overly impressed by any of the items I tried, but everything was solid for SA. My least favorite dish I tried was the Spicy Garlic Eggplant. I was expecting it to be more savory, but the flavor profile leaned closer to sweet and sour. The eggplant itself was cooked well, but I just wasn't too fond of the seasoning of it. The soup dumplings were also decent, but they weren't individually placed on separate pieces of parchment/liners, so some of the dumplings were stuck to the metal steamer and ultimately broke prior to eating (and the soup leaked out). For the pricing, combined with quality of food and service, I probably wouldn't go out of my way to venture to this spot. I'm still more of a fan of Sichuan House for sure. read more

Had a lovely dinner with friends last night for Dashi Sichuan Kitchen + Bar 2nd Year Birthday Party. We had 11 dishes last night ( 9 pictured ) and for the most part everything was on point. I'm a huge fan of their Cold Garlicky Noodles, Pork Wontons, and Crispy Spicy Savory Fish. The soup dumplings were good but I'd still travel to ATX to get mine when I'm in the mood next time. I also tried their Burning Man Noods which were excellent and had so much flavor and the Jalapeño Pork was tasty as well. They also make some great cocktails! The only issue my friends and I had was it was quite warm inside the restaurant. It's my third time here and every time, the temp has been a discussion. ( mind you, very aware that we're eating pretty authentic Asian with notoriously hot spices and oils used in the food ) and it also feels like your face is melting at 4:00 pm. due to our glorious sun. I came in during lunch (it was rather empty) and there was no one around for a number of minutes to seat me. Eventually, a server appeared and showed me to my table. I informed them that it was my first time there and they kindly explained the menu to me. I asked for an old fashioned and the server recommended a specific rye and left but quickly returned to tell me that it would be several dollars more, I went with the house. The cocktail was fine. The portions are all a la carte and generally meant to be shared (minus the soup). I went with the lunch special so I could try multiple items. I got the egg drop soup, Mongolian beef, dumplings, and green beans. The food was all quite fresh and had a good, if not usual taste. The egg drop soup was a bit over the top with its spice selection and felt overly exotic, as did the green beans. The garlic sauce on the dumplings had a unique taste and actually was better when I ate them at home the following day. The gem was by far the Mongolian beef. The beef was tender and the sauce was excellent. I really liked it. I would go here again, but maybe with a friend. The odd plate portions for one person seemed off, but I did have plenty to take home and enjoy later. read more

Sichuan food is one of my favorite cuisines, and it has been hard to find great places since moving to Texas, but this restaurant definitely exceeded my expectations! We came here for dinner on a weeknight, so it was not particularly crowded. It had a welcoming interior, and servers were friendly and very helpful given it was our first time. We got the green beans, which were served in a savory, spicy aromatic sauce with a perfectly cooked texture to the green beans. Exactly the way I enjoy them! We also got a crispy fried dry tofu dish, served with white rice, which was also quite good. It had a strong sichuan pepper corn component, and served with some onions. The tofu was definitely on the crispy side. Dish was great as is, though I wouldn't mind an alternative that is a bit less flash fried. I also have celiac (strict gluten-free), and I'm vegetarian, and had a great time dining here. For celiac, they were aware of cross contamination protocols, and they also had a separate menu available for gluten free folk, which was really appreciated! I just really really wish they had a gluten-free mapo tofu as it is one of my favorite dishes, as the online menu was incorrect in listing the "mama chen's tofu" as GF. I understand this though as it is very difficult to find gluten-free doubanjiang. The only strange thing about the restaurant is that the vibes of the decor, demeanor of staff, and the name itself "Dashi" (which is Japanese, not Chinese), made me think it would be a bit of a strange Asian fusion restaurant. However, I was glad to find the menu and flavors definitely felt authentic and importantly, delicious. Gluten Free abundance! I find some of the lower star reviews about this place to be super odd and nit picky. Overall I've been disappointed in San Antonio by the overhyped bland food at most places. So, not to be "that girl" but I've lived all over the country and traveled the world, I'd say this place is pretty top tier when it comes to food. It's Sichuan food, if you order a spicy option, you will get spicy food. Their gluten free is really gluten free unlike many San Antonio (or Texas in general) restaurants. Not even the slightest hint of reaction for me and I have Celiac. I ordered pretty much everything I had been eyeing. - Green beans - Chicken wings - Combo fried rice - Fries - Ribs - Shrimp (spicy and savory) - Pot of Jasmine Tea The waitress was so sweet and attentive, gave great suggestions on which options of certain dishes to get for someone with a more adventurous palate. The restaurant is beautiful! I mean, I could've take pictures all day of the decor and good. How was the food? Let's just say I ate a quarter of each dish for lunch, sat and enjoyed my pot of tea after, took it home, and ate more for dinner. Just delicious! read more

My friend and I were in the area and this place popped up on Yelp as a nearby restaurant. We reviewed the menu and it sounded like they had something for each of us to try, so we went. When you drive up the place seems a little off. They have an outdoor sitting area that doesn't fit in with the rest of the restaurant. When we walked in we were greeted by the hostess and sat down promptly. The decor is lovely. The chairs were extremely comfortable and cozy. It is very dark inside, it gives off a romantic vibe. We were given a water decanter and menus. I looked over the menu and found something I wanted to try. The waitress was very nice and pleasant. There wasn't much of a crowd here which could either be that they had just open or the food isn't something to rave about. I ordered the Mama Chens tofu. When I ordered this I specifically asked for vegetarian version of the dish. What made me worry is the waitress said "is chicken bouillon okay?" From my understanding that usually has chicken fat. I was a little worried after that if my food would contain that even if she said no. My friend ordered the kung pao chicken. We also ordered some street potatoes. We both ordered tea hers was sweet and I ordered mine unsweet. The potatoes were pretty good but the oil sank all to the bottom which made them a little unpleasant. My friends tea was extremely sweet. She had trouble drinking it so I asked for an unsweetened tea for her to water it down to a more tolerable level. The portion size was pretty large, that was nice. The spice on my tofu was pretty great. However, it was pretty spicy to the point that I felt I could taste anything anymore and by that I mean my tea. It was good don't get me wrong but I think the spice was a little overwhelming. My friend enjoyed her plate and veggies. We were given a bowl of rice to share which was a little challenging since we didn't want to contaminate it because then I wouldn't be able to get any. For the most part service was great. The restaurant was comfortable something that would be nice for a date. I don't think I'd come back only because it was a little overwhelming with spice. My friend said her food was good but not great. Since it is so dark inside when we stepped out it was extremely bright. Reminded me of walking out of the club and into the real world kind of vibe. I've been here a number of times and I can honestly say that this is not the typical Chinese food you find in most places. It's elevated and thoughtfully curated to be delicious. Normally, I don't like green beans, but it said on the menu that they were famous and after trying them, I can see why. I tried re-creating their green beans at home and just cannot do it. They are a must try for everybody. They offer family style portions as well so if you're going in a group, this will allow you to try multiple dishes, which is ideal because everything here is so good. I asked the hostess if we could sit where there was more like but she said those tables were reserved but she would turn on the light for us.......she never did We came with high hopes. I understand sichuan food can be more on the saltier side but this was TOO SALTY. The menu is very limited and pretty over priced for what you get. We got two different dishes but it all tasted the same. I am someone who loves spicy food and our waitress told us "anything level 3 is VERY spicy"....it was not... Food was good. As a Chinese person, I'm satisfied. We ordered the stir fried green beans, Sichuan fried fish, zhajiangmian, and pork soup dumplings. The green beans were great. Stir fried well and had the right flavor. The Sichuan fried fish was great, breaded and fried well. The spice level was perfect for me. If you are sensitive to spice, I wouldn't recommend. The zhajiangmian was tasty, but it was more like dandan noodles. Still happy to eat it though! When it comes to zhajiangmian I'm used to a thick fermented soybean sauce, with wheat noodles, and garnished with cucumber. The pork soup dumplings were tasty, but didn't have soup in it. It's likely not made in house. Which is totally fine, since it's better to go to a specialty soup dumpling place if I want fresh stuff. Still, the flavor was good. The service here is great. They're very attentive, helpful, and fast. I appreciated it. The interior is a modern, almost art deco style. It's big enough to host parties, which you can ask the staff about. read more

We have enjoyed Dashi many times. I have never found another restaurant like this. No heavy cornstarch sauces or MSG. Everything is fresh, including the best green beans we have ever eaten. Our waitress, Allasan has worked in some high end restaurants and we are glad she is here. Very knowledgeable about the menu and variations of dishes. Allasan said they get a large volume of fresh green beans and the staff trim them for this dish. Only the perfect size make it to this dish. We had the soup dumplings with a side of smashed cucumbers. Definitely better than the ones from Trader Joes. Next, we had the salt and pepper shrimp. These were huge, breaded, and fried. Served with onions and peppers. And finally, we had the Double Trouble Spicy Ribeye made with three types of peppers. Definitely had somer heat. The ribeye was very flavorful. And what's that? It's the subtle taste of a numbing pepper. Dashi is not Panda Express and the prices are higher. But the originality, quality, and taste cannot be matched in San Antonio. read more

First time here. I had heard such great things, but the experience was not. The menu has a lot of interesting dishes. The Garlic PB rolls were bland and had little pork belly flavor. The sesame ribs were cut into small bites but the bones were left in. It was very strange to eat. The flavor was good. The main dishes were all just okay .. nothing stood out. We had lo mein, Kung pao chicken, three pepper chicken. The plates were a good size. The main problem today was execution. For $15 I expect a better lunch. read more

I really really wanted to love Dashi. It has been on my foodie bucket list for a couple years, but my wife isn't a big fan of numbing & tingling spices. Unfortunately, the best thing I can say is I now can cross it off of my bucket list. I won't return. Tonight I got home after a Saturday working (when I am usually M-F), and my wife surprised me with reservations to Dashi! We arrived, were greeted and immediately seated. Excellent. That was the best it got. Then our waiter arrived. Initially Freddy came across as very shaky and nervous. He talked too much about different dishes without listening to my questions. We assumed he was nervous and new. Now I have no idea. We had to flag others to help us because he spent too much time at other tables. We would ask for something, and he would agree and then stop at several other tables and bring them items. Eventually he would return but still not have what we had asked for. At the end of the meal we asked for another round of drinks and 2 expensive sipping tequilas (neat, not chilled, and lemon slices on the side). We received our Tom Collins and Old Fashioned cocktails... And waited. We finally asked Freddy and he said he would check on them ... Then he stopped at 2 more tables and I lost sight of him. Eventually I saw him around the bar area but nothing. Finally after 30 minutes I flagged over the gentleman who seated us, and I asked him to check on our tequilas. About 5 minutes later Freddy brought them over and stated that the bartenders were backed up on orders and that he had been checking on them. Given that I was watching Freddy in other areas than the bar, I'm not sure how he was checking. Also, if we ordered 2 mixed drinks and 2 neat tequilas at the same time, why would the cocktails come out but not the shots? It's easier to pour 2 shot glasses than make 2 different cocktails. Eventually we had to ask for our check from someone else. They brought it, and Freddy came to enter our card into the handheld device, waited for us to enter tip,and sign. I requested a printed copy, which he had to go get from 10ft away. That was another 5 minutes. I never tip less than 20%. I usually tip more than 20%. Tonight I didn't even tip 10%. I feel bad but tonight I just couldn't. Ok, let's talk about the food ... And because I've already written a novel about the service I will keep this brief. Nothing was even remotely spicy. We ordered: Hot & Sour soup for 2: it was meh. It wasn't hot (spicy) nor sour. I took the rest to go and I will doctor it at home with my white pepper (or crushed red pepper if necessary) and black vinegar. Pork soup dumplings: overall dumplings were decent. We also enjoyed the garlic cucumber dish that came with it. Signature Crispy Fish (whole bass) with steamed rice: Excellent fish! Flaky fish and delicious sauce. Tangy but not a bit spicy. MixMix Zha'Jiang Noods: bland overcooked noodles topped with delicious minced pork. Pork wasn't able to overcome the horrible noodles. I'd been looking forward to trying this place for awhile, but found it hit or miss. The queens cocktail was good, strong, and beautifully presented. The soup dumplings were not great - thick, doughy exterior and still a little frozen inside. The pot stickers were standard fare. The crispy salt and pepper shrimp were good - salty from the duck yolk. And the veggies they came on were so good, I took them home. The burning man noodles and grandmas favorite were the standout dishes - most interesting flavors, most unique. I am the biggest spicy wuss, but I was still able to enjoy them. The numbing spice was weird, but cool. I also got sesame chicken, in case the other food was too spicy. It was just okay, wouldn't order again. And my husband got general tsos, which he said was fine. So - a lot of food, and I was only impressed by maybe half of it. read more

Absolutely one of my favorite places! We visited for the first time on a Wednesday night, so it wasn't crazy busy. We got sat and greeted by Sonia right away, she explained the menu and suggested a couple of items. We started with the Soup Dumplings, and as Sonia suggested we made sure to order that first since they can take some time. We also ordered a Chicken Lo Mein, the Crunchy Spicy Chicken and a side of Smashed Cucumbers. The portions are big so we kind of just put everything in the middle and had a little bit of everything. There is inside seating, a bar area and a super cute patio. Oh and they have drink specials! We tried the jalapeño cucumber margaritas. Definitely going to come back :) read more

So. Where do I begin. I really really wanted to love this place. With that being noted, it's just ok. Reading some reviews and how they noticed that the AC wasn't cool enough. I agree. I was hoping for a more opulent experience from the photos. It's just ok again. Ordered several things and although they were just ok nothing was above average or memorable. Even the BBQ short ribs. More bone than anything and the flavor was just meh. Hot and sour was just hot not sour. The grandma tofu dish was excellent. The waitress kept saying the dishes were all shareable which I understand as the servings are large which they seemed to be. The drinks ordered were ok. I wasn't impressed at all. Overall. I don't see myself going back. The service was good and the wait staff was attentive to some degree. read more

Had a wonderful experience at Dashi last night for my son's 22nd birthday! All the food was hot, flavorful, and had just the right amount of spice to let you experience the beauty of Sichuan cuisine without burning your mouth off! Many of their dishes are served family style to encourage sharing, so we ordered a few of their small plates to get the most exposure. Duck, wings, and bao are pictured below, but we also tried their Burning Man Noodles, which were amazing as well and disappeared before I snapped a photo! I was also looking forward to trying their soup dumplings, but unfortunately they were out of those. The cocktails were unique and delicious, and we had superb service! Definitely recommend for any foodies craving Asian cuisine with a twist. read more
