I recall back when Darryl &Andrea Townsend first opened DAT Donut. I thought for a moment, how can such a cool and savvy business lady open and maintain a DOUGHNUT shop?? Turns out that she was smart and made a darn fantastic doughnut. The fritters are oh my gosh rich, sweet, crunchy, and apply delicious! The doughnuts have a slightly crisp exterior and a beautifully soft interior. The icings and glazes are just a bonus. YUM-O-LICIOUS The Dat Donuts are GREAT! We tried some fried cakes and some glazed ...the fried cakes are so buttery and light - not too sweet. The glazed are airy light and melt in your mouth; just sweet enough - not sickeningly sweet like grocery store-bought. and THEN we purchased one of the BIG DAT glazed for the kiddos - it was just as good as the "smaller" donuts! Even the regular sized donuts are huge - the dough tastes like a warm, soft Dunkin dough and the glaze has the texture and sweetness of Krispie Kreme though not as sweet. Best doughnuts ever. This place is iconic and after hearing my local friends rave about it, we knew we had to go on our last visit to chicago. The neighborhood is rough, and apparently this place even has bullet-proof glass windows, so we stayed in the car, but these doughnuts are incredible. I tried the old fashioned, classic glazed donut... 4 of them. All amazing. I do not know their secret but there is something amazing going on here. Their donuts are fluffy with a crusty, thick glaze. WOW, what an experience. In all aspects of the word. Upon our departure of the Chicago area I was craving donuts real bad...and my yelpers came thru again! Donuts are delectable but as others have mentioned the area is sketchy and the parking lot is small. Had I not been with my husband or another person I probably would have not ventured out on my own. Dat Donut is a covered area in front of a market and the line can form quickly. Suggest you use cash. I would go back again if in the Chicago area using the buddy system. I've only visited this location once and I was immediately turned off by the mass amount of flies that circulated and landed amongst the donuts. I was disgusted to say the least and left quickly after seeing such. I wouldn't dare buy food to eat that has been touched by nasty bugs. read more

I used to pass by this place so many times without ever trying it. But today, I really wanted a donut and decided to give it a try. I got the chocolate glazed, strawberry, coconut, and a chocolate long John. The donuts were soft, fresh and sweet. The doughnut was light and fluffy and the frosting was sweet, but not overpowering. My favorite was the strawberry donut, because it didn't leave a weird after taste like so many other donuts that I've tried in the past. read more

Big isn't always better, but the giant BIG DAT was totally worth the trip. It was actually HOT when we got it - moist, yeasty and flavorful - with this oily crispiness on the bottom. I'm still thinking about it 36 hours later. The blueberry cake was also good, but the custard filled had a flavor I didn't quite like. There are no labels on the doughnuts, and the staff, while efficient aren't exactly friendly or welcoming, so you just have to point at which one you want, or secretly know the name, I guess. It is quite a journey down there to the South Side, but I will be back to try the apple fritters and maybe the "donut balls." read more

My kind of donut and my kind of price. Sure the neighborhood isn't great and it is a little out of the way but this place is definitely worth it every once in a while! Got my fam a dozen donuts, a good variety to sample everything that they offer. I must say that everything we tried was a hit. In the future I'll be returning and spending 1/4 as much as I would at the vault or glazed for some tasty donuts. The service was great. Ok. I live blocks away from this "establishment." And every now and then I get a taste for old fashioned style donuts ! THIS IS NOT THE PLACE TO GO ! Dude need a sign that lights up to tell ppl when the donuts are ready or something. Because every time I step foot in this place they ALWAYS sell these STALE, DRIED OUT,FLAT,DAY OLD donuts. You would think I'd learn my lesson and not keep patronizing. But Im no hater, let a Black man get his money. Does it have to be this way, at the expense of your reputation? Once I tired telling the owner, I told him I always come thru from time to time and support. One of his employees even said she recognizes me as a regular. Small parking lot, and small interior. But donuts looked great. Huge donuts were a lot of fun and I appreciated that the large size didn't lead to soggy middles, they were delicious. My daughter had the huge cinnamon roll and said the middle was her favorite part! The cake donut was very good and I thought the service was quick and professional.
