I was really excited about finally being able to try this place out, especially that toast that everyone has been posting online for the last few years, but I found myself disappointed by the actual thing. My friend and I came in for a brunch meal on a weekday, so it was pretty easy to grab some seats at the bar. It is a really small space, with only about 3 tables and 6 bar seats, and even at the bar it's very cramped. The servers had to squeeze behind us when bringing food out, and with the walkway only fitting one body at a time, it's difficult to get in and out of your seat. I ordered the iced hojicha latte, chicken karaage, and we shared a lemon honey toast. The highlight for me was probably the hojicha latte-- it was sweet but had such a deep tea flavor that shined. The chicken karaage was good as well, but I found that there was too much sauce on it and wish it was served on the side. The lemon toast was light and had good flavor, but I couldn't get past how old it tasted. The bread was dry to me, and it just seemed like it was still in its trial and error stages of experimentation rather than a dish that was ready to serve and be worth $13. If I were to come back, I'd probably just grab a drink to go! I'd definitely try some of their other specialty drinks. read more

I've been wanting to try this place for a while after seeing it on social media. It's a cute, small cafe located in east village. If you want to grab food or drinks to go, there's a store right next to it for that. I chose to dine in. I ordered the black sesame cream cheese toast and an iced hojicha latte. Both were really good! The toast's price was steep at $12 but the flavor was good. It's definitely something you can make at home. The presentation is really what brings people here. I hate when toast either comes apart or is impossible to share without making a mess and I didn't have that problem here. Mentai pasta was delicious! Savory without being overly salty. I wouldn't say it's anything out of this world but sometimes you need to balance something sweet with something savory and this wasn't a bad option. Service is good--staff are moreso attentive and food/drinks come out in a reasonable amount of time. Ambiance is very fresh and kind of like your typical cafe kind of vibe. Since the space itself is a little more intimate it might not be the best if you are gregariously loud. You run the risk of upsetting other guests. Not a good place for large groups due to limited seating (but not impossible if you wait). I would say this place is best for a solo or date. But the real standout is the mentai pasta. It is phenomenal. Creamy in the right way, and not too fishy. Perfect amount of umami. We loved it. For drinks, I tried an iced black sesame latte and a hot azuki (red bean) latte. The black sesame is strong -- you certainly get the flavor -- but to me it was too heavy. I recently went to try the iconic checkered toast which is black sesame and cream cheese toast. I rarely eat cream cheese on toast but this one was quite delicious paired with coffee or tea. The space is small and cozy as well as quiet which is ideal for a chill spot to eat peacefully. The servers have a calm demeanor while taking your order and bringing your food over. We went there on Saturday around 2:30pm to avoid a long line and still had to put our name on a waitlist. It was supposed to take 25 minutes but we ended up waiting for 50 minutes to be seated. After we finally got a table, we ordered the following dishes: 1. Black Sesame Toast (4/5) - black sesame and cream cheese combo was good, but the bread itself was not too special. Tasted like a regular toast (wish it was more chewy and soft) 2. Croquet Curry (4/5) - decent but was not beyond my expectation. They give you 3 mini croquets. 3. Uni Pasta (4/5) - ok. Tasted fresh. 4. Mentai Pasta (5/5) - yummy! I liked this better than Uni pasta. I think they used a ramen noodle which was unique, but the noodles started to stick together after a few minutes. I've been wanting to go to this cafe so bad, that my friend and I trekked out here during the flash flood warnings and not gonna lie, it was worth. A cozy place tucked away in one of the quieter streets of lower east side, Davelle is the very definition of a cafe. A good selection of drinks (a banger hojicha), cute and tasty toasts to choose from, and a variety of pastas and curries to parse through. The uni pasta was delicious, and they were pretty generous with the uni too. We'll definitely be back! It's a small place and no reservations can be made so just arrive early and hope that the wait isn't too long. I think we waited for about 20-30 minutes for a table for four. The aesthetic of the food is super cute and I've been waiting to come here for the longest time. There aren't too many places that service hojicha latte and black sesame latte on the regular so I had to get one of these. I opted for the black sesame latte since it's a bit rarer to see this on the menu than a hojicha latte. The drink ended up being decent but not amazing. I definitely tasted the black sesame but it didn't come out with a cute latte art. If you order the Hojicha latte it does come with cute latte art though. My friend and I each ordered a latte, which were both tasty and served warm but not scalding hot so we could drink it right away, which was a nice detail. We also shared a red bean toast and each ordered a mentai spaghetti. The toast was a tasty milk bread and the butter and red bean topping had a good balanced not-too-sweet flavor. The pasta was not as satisfying; the portion actually wasn't bad, but I felt that the cod roe sauce wasn't as flavorful and creamy as I've had it elsewhere, and the pasta ended up clumping together as it cooled since there wasn't enough sauce to keep it smooth. I've been wanting to go to Davelle since it first went viral ~5 years ago (when I was in high school) so getting to dine here after moving to NYC post-college was such a cool full circle experience! - Azuki Latte (9.2/10): guys. I loved this latte. Seriously a sleeper hit. Azuki is sweetened red bean paste that is commonly found in East Asian desserts. The latte was perfectly warm, creamy, and honestly I loved the subtle red bean flavor. If you've never had sweetened red bean paste, it's got a sweet (kind of nutty?) flavor and pairs perfectly with the creamy milk. Also, Davelle calls this a latte but I don't think the drink has any coffee in it. - Cinnamon Butter Toast (5/10): Honestly there's better toasts from the menu to try so I can't (in good faith) recommend you order this. Very simple and you get what you expect. It's cinnamon on buttered Japanese milk bread - solid. - Black Sesame and Cream Cheese Toast (7.5/10): This is a much more fun toast that I do recommend! Great black sesame flavor that pairs well with the cool/refreshing (?) creaminess of the cream cheese. The thick slice of shokupan (Japanese milk bread) is great... fluffy and light! It's super beautiful but definitely wayyy overpriced for what you get. ~8/10 for taste but like 7/10 considering both taste and price - Mentai Spaghetti (8.7/10): This was such my favorite dish I tried! I've never had a mentaiko cream spaghetti before either so this was delightful. Mentaiko is a whole roe sack of pollack fish that is cured with salt and spices (alarming description IK but don't be scared). The mentaiko has a great savory, umami flavor that was great with the creaminess of the pasta. Also overpriced but that's the theme of this restaurant. I recommend this for sure!!! Also, fair warning that this place is pretty popular! Our party of 3 showed up on a Saturday at 1 PM and waited around 40 min before getting bar seating. We also got two matcha drinks with the coffee jelly. The drinks were pretty good - the coffee jelly was an interesting texture and unique addition to the matcha. However, I am unsure if I can recommend Davelle, solely due to the price. The Mentaiko toast (which is essentially a single piece of pretty toast with some mayo on it) was $12. If you're craving Japanese breakfast, UNI to check out Davelle! This was my last spot before ending my NY trip, and it's definitely worth the visit for their incredible Japanese-inspired dishes. They're known for their signature toasts, and I would highly recommend their black sesame and cream cheese toast, which came on a piece of buttery, warmly toasted bread topped with super fragrant and creamy black sesame butter. If you're craving something savory, I would also recommend the curry rice with chicken katsu, which was perfectly fried and came with a really hefty portion of white rice and Japanese curry sauce. I fell for the aesthetic toasts like everyone else but didn't leave as wholly disappointed as many others here. I am often teased (lovingly, I should say) by friends for being overzealous and reading up on everything about an eatery before I visit. There is something to be said for that and expectation setting because I knew that the prices for some dishes (like the uni spaghetti at $24, slices of toast for $12, and lattes for $7) were a tad steep, and that it's difficult on most days to find an available seat. I planned accordingly. It was actually perfect to visit during a dreary rainstorm, because I easily found a couple of counter seats. Davelle also has a gloomy vibe pulled straight out of a Miyazaki film, complete with no interior windows and gray walls made to look very lived in. Cozying up with a hojicha latte and a curry dish was my idea of a great afternoon. The food was pretty good, with the black sesame & cream cheese toast being a standout. The uni spaghetti was buttery and the uni had nice flavor to it but you pay quite the pretty penny for the uni on this small dish. I was still hungry by the end of my meal so I ordered another toast, this time the red bean one. It was not even a fraction as good as the black sesame one and $12 a pop for these toasts definitely feels like a lot to spend, but I enjoy the novelty of it. Sometimes it's just nice to be around adorable things, and the food at this cafe is almost too pretty to eat.
