Dave first helped us with my stepmom's car, the brakes failed on her when visiting us from out of state. I had already taken it to the shop closer to us and found them to be very expensive and treated us like a number. I called Dave and liked speaking with the owner of the shop who squeezed us in. It pains me to have to write this update, but Dave's Auto really started to go down hill in late 2018. For years I've been making the trek back to Dave's because he was able to do wonders for my Oldsmobile back in the day, and more recently, despite him not being a fan of working on Volkswagons, he was able to provide decent service for that car too. Regardless of how much further I moved from Skokie, I still went back to Dave's. The last few months have seen a serious drop in quality and I hope they can reverse it. A few months ago I brought in my car to have a window motor replaced. Within 3 months I was back because the part they chose had already broken. Dave replaced it at a minimal cost to me, which I appreciated, but the hassle of having to get it fixed twice - and the hassle of driving up to Dave's in cold weather with the window stuck in the position down - was a lot to deal with. I went back up there last month so they could check on a coolant issue, and they 'fixed' it and repaired a busted tail light. The day after I left Dave's my father told me I had another tail light out already. Two weeks later the coolant light popped on again. Now the light goes on every single time I get in the car. I don't know what happened with Dave's where it now takes 2 trips up there to solve a problem that should be fixed with 1 trip, but it's gotten to the point where I can't bring myself to go back. Maybe it's my just my car though. If it is just my car not all cars, I'd avoid going up to Dave's if you have a VW - he doesn't like them and I guess at this point it's getting too tough to fix them. read more

Moved to area less than two years ago and Dave's was recommended by a neighbor. Last year he replaced bulbs for low beam headlights on my older Forester. When they went out again after a year, he explained that the headlamps were leaking fixture was leaking and moisture was making the bulbs burn out. I could spend a lot to replace the whole thing or continue to replace the bulbs. I chose the latter and appreciated his offering me a more cost effective solution. read more

I took my car there for a timing belt service. I was told he couldn't look at it that day because I didn't have an appointment. Fine. I made an appointment for the following Monday early. I brought my car back and was told to come back on Wednesday because he "wasn't prepared to get into it that day." And "to be prepared to leave the car for 2-3 days." I don't know his work schedule but, to me, the place was empty. I went to the dealer and they had it done in a day. Clearly he didn't need or want my business. I was on my way home from Glenview this past Wednesday and while on the expressway, my car started lurching, similar to how a train chugs along, and then the check engine light would come on when I pressed the gas until it eventually stayed on constantly. I pulled over and tried to get a tow from my usual mechanic and they said it would take about 3 hours. Not wanting to wait that long, I was trying to figure out what to do next. I look up and see I'm next to a place called "Dave's Auto". Look it up really quick and see good reviews as well as the fact that they were closing in about 2 minutes. I ran inside and a gentleman who introduced himself as Justin told me I could leave the car and they would be able to take a look at it when they opened Thursday. He let me wait inside upfront while I waited for my uber and was super courteous. Dave called the next morning as Justin promised with the diagnosis -- bad coil and need for new spark plugs. Gave me a quote to see if I wanted to proceed with the work that we felt was quite reasonable and explained that although they didn't have the parts, they were hopeful for Friday but prepared me for Monday worst case to get my car back. Friday morning, Dave calls again to let me know the car is ready and good to go. As if the fair price, great customer service, and quick turnaround weren't enough, I know when I first left my car there, the tire pressure light was on, they went ahead and put air in the tires prior to me picking it up. I thanked them up and down for just being good people but wanted to write this review because hopefully others will see it and consider Dave's Auto -- a place you can take your car to receive not just reliable work for a fair price but great customer service as well. read more

Dave is the best! He does great work every time I take my car in to his shop. He is always 100% honest and he only recommends repairs that my car needs. Dave will tell you when you need to get a new car (because he's so honest and forthcoming, he will tell you that it's better for you to buy a new car rather than to continue to bring your car to him for frequent and expensive repairs). He has done such a great job with tons of repairs my cars (over the years) have needed. The most common reasons I go to him are for my vehicle's oil changes (and tire rotations). He also has done tons of other repairs for my vehicles, like battery replacements and tire replacements. He also fixed the timing on my engine, as well as filled and checked fluid levels. He's also willing to fix smaller things, like fix the cigarette lighter because that's what I used to connect my music player to my car's audio system. His employees do a great job, too...but I'm sure a big part of why they stay is because of how well Dave runs things and how Dave treats them. Dave is terrific! He fixes my car and tells me when to stop. He tells me straight out, "I won't take your money if I think it's too expensive and not worth it." He makes taking my car in to be a pleasure instead of something to dread, as has been the case in the past with other places. He fixes the car and always is there to be reliable and knowledgeable. I have referred friends, relatives and coworkers and no one has ever been disappointed. Dave is incredibly honest, fair and reasonably priced and will tell you when you don't need work done and will tell you to go to the dealer if the repair is covered under warranty. Dave will tell you when the dealer is taking you for a ride and when you should be tough with the dealer if they should cover the cost. Dave is not honest. I took my 2010 Camry in for an oil change. He tells me I need new brakes for $625, new rear shocks for $150 and a heater plate in the back replaced because it rattles. I do the oil change and the brakes. I had bought the car from carmax 4 years ago. When I had brought the car in to him a couple years ago after I had bought it he said you had new brakes done. I said oh ok. Carmax must have put new brakes in for me. I bought the car with about 36,000 miles on it. It is now at 70,000 miles. I talked to some friends at work. They said if you have 70,000 miles on your car u don't need new brakes. I forgot to mention I probably had new brakes put in by carmax when I had bought the car. I asked my boss if I should get new rear shocks. He said push down on the trunk. If it bounces once you don't need new shocks. If it bounces twice you need new shocks. I did that test. I found out it bounced only once. The rattling in the back is probably because of the snow shovel I keep in the trunk. The Camry is the least likely car to need repair in the world. Toyota is the least likely make of car to need repair. I will never come back to Dave. He is definitely not honest. read more
