Half of the brisket was just fat. The pulled pork was nothing special, and the sausage wasn't even a tad spicy. The potato salad had too much of mustard that it gave a bitter taste, and the coleslaw had too much of dressing. By the time, I finished the platter, the grease was sitting in the bottom of the container and so was inside my belly. This is a hidden gem. First, it's a bit hard to find as it's in the back of a building. If you're coming from Virginia Beach just take 17th. St. until you see a shell gas station on your left. The restaurant is right next to it on the same left side. The place is very low key inside. Just 2 tables and a bar seat. The food is phenomenal. I am a huge fan of barbeque and Dave's gets it right. We had the brisket, pork spareribs, pulled pork, and pulled chicken. The sides we picked were spicy slaw and smoked beans. The brisket was moist with a crispy bark. The ribs were moist and almost falling off the bone with just a little bit of chew. The pulled chicken was sweet and tangy. My favorite was the pulled pork which was sweet and spicy. Came in for lunch with a coworker at about 11:30 AM. The first thing you notice is that the parking lot is small and the restaurant shares a building. The smell as you enter let you know it was going to be good. There is a very small area to eat inside so if they get busy I imagine you take it with you. I ordered the brisket sandwich with baked beans and my coworker had the pulled pork sandwich with corn bread muffins. The brisket was cut right in front of me and two, one inch thick slices went on the bun. The bark looked beautiful and the juices were running out. The spicy cole slaw was a nice touch. The sheer amount of pulled pork my partner got on his sandwich was amazing. Never seen that much on a bun before. I can't figure out if the sides are a rotating list but I think they are. The baked beans were very, very good. While we were there a customer came in just to get the beans to go. The corn bread muffins were pretty good if you don't mind them cold. We're so glad we stumbled across this gem of a BBQ restaurant! We dropped in at 11 AM after they opened and our order was quickly and politely taken and filled. The staff member at the register was knowledgable and friendly offering helpful suggestions on the best things to order. We tried their pulled pork and brisket sandwiches with a sampling of sides during our visit. Our meals were incredibly good and a good value in consideration of portion sizes. Came into Va Beach from Kentucky for my kids this week and while I was out, I stopped at Dave's for a combo. All I can say is, "WOW"!!! I ordered the Omen with slaw on it and their spicy slaw for my side and it was amazing. If you're looking to get the meat sweats from delicious BBQ, this is the spot. After reading reviews here on Yelp, I decided to take a ride to Virginia Beach to try out the food. The plate I was planning on ordering was the two meat platter, consisting of brisket and sausage w/beans and cornbread. Once I placed my order, one of the owners gave me some bad news: they were out of brisket and beans. If you read the previous reviews, they do tend to run out of brisket early in the day so it's best to come before the afternoon to order. With that being said, I went on ahead and ordered the 2 meat platter as planned, with pork spare ribs and sausage (one sweet and one spicy) with cornbread and jalapeno chips. And I decided to also order banana pudding for desert. After all was said and done, I believe I found a very genuine BBQ spot in the Hampton Roads area. The sausages were very good, especially with the sauces that were available to use (they had the regular BBQ, sweet, hot sauce and vinegar) and the spare ribs were really well done. Probably some of the biggest ribs I've had in a long time. I'm not really a cornbread person with BBQ food, but the muffins they had were very good. Banana pudding was definitely homemade and tasted well. First time I've been and they were not sold out. Now I know why they're always sold out! This place was amazing! I'm not a fan of sides usually, but the potato salad and beans were delicious! The sandwiches were stacked so high and then a layer of chipotle coleslaw on top was on point! This place is finger licking good. I have yet to have bbq this good inland around the area. The place is small and they offer outside seating with some picnic benches. Parking is tight if you have a big truck. Friendly inside and helpful with menu. I've drove by this place numerous times, seeing the smoke roll all morning, catching the scent of bbq on the way through towards work, and I finally absorbed all of this flavor! The meals are hearty. This is hands down the best brisket in the Norfolk/ VA Beach area. Make sure you're there before 2pm or they'll run out! My bf and I have gone to ~5-6 places in the area and this one was easily comparable with some of the best brisket we've had around the country (including Texas!) The owner was even familiar with the owner of our favorite BBQ place in SC, so you know it had to be good. The fatty brisket (only way to go) is thick cut and perfectly marbled that the meat basically falls apart - it's that tender. There's a nice level of grease and a nice crust as well. We also ordered the pulled pork, both slaws, the potato salad, and the corn muffins. The pork paired nicely with the multiple sauces that were available and was decently pulled. The classic slaw was great and fresh and the spicy slaw was different and delicious. The potato salad was surprisingly one of my favs- the potatoes were mashed and there were small bits of cornichons throughout which provided a nice balance. We will be back! read more

A full five star review that has been earned by hours upon hours of blood, sweat and tears over a 500 gallon smoker daily. This is no fairy tale bbq story mind you. This is the true story of an obsession by Dave Brown since the age of 12 to master smoking meat. Owners Dave and Patty Brown have been perfecting Texas style bbq over 10 years as a business. In the late Summer they opened a brick and mortar location off Virgina Beach Blvd. Look for the Shell gas station to the South, they are beside it to the West. The snow white building houses another business in front, Dave's is on the rear side. Plenty of parking now, but unsure of the situation will be when the business in front opens. The lot was clear of debris. Once parked I opened the door to the unmistakable aroma of bbq being smoked. I took a peak in the rear of the joint to see the real operation. White smoke billowed up in the air from their smoker on a frigid Virginia Beach afternoon. I climbed a few steps to enter through the glass door where I was quickly met by owners Patty, then soon after Dave. The dining room has a few tables and a counter along the wall. The ordering area is to the rear. Restrooms are around the corner to right. Everything was spotless. Customers bus themselves with trash container located by the ordering counter. I took a look at the menu which is posted above the counter hand written no less. This may be the first clue that this is not about being fancy, or pretentious to the Brown's. Dave has two missions in my opinion. Producing a superior product and having customers leave satisfied. I think the dedication to arriving around 3 AM to start the fires says it all about his commitment to the business. When I asked about the menu Dave recommended the brisket which usually sells out by 130, I got lucky at 2. The Texas style ribs were also suggested and I could not resist. I sampled the slaw which is unique in that it brings some heat. With my two piece meat platter I got two sides and a drink. I decided on beans and potato salad. Desserts are banana pudding and brownies both made in house. So a pudding was to go with entree eaten in house. Drinks are bottle only. Everything is cooked outside over an Oak wood fire. The meats are served on a plastic tray with sides in a paper bowl. I would have loved to seen a steel tray. The desserts are packaged to go. First the brisket which looked and smelled phenomenal and was much better than I would have ever expected. Three in house sauces are provided on the table. I pulled out the sweet. The brisket had the correct combination of meat and fat and was cooked long enough that it melts in your mouth. It stands alone with no sauce. I probably shed a tear, but quickly moved onto the ribs before I got too emotional. The pork ribs were dark and meaty and cooked perfectly to allow a gentle tug by the teeth. The sweet sauce was a match made in heaven with both meats. Next up the smothered baked beans which contains slices of their sausage and holds the distinction of the best beans I've ever had with a fabulous sweet flavor. The let down was the potato salad which lacked flavor, but the texture was spot on. I did not finish. When arriving home I hit up the banana pudding which has a non traditional firm consistency. Lordy, this was awesome and may remind you of a cheesecake, but believe me the banana is present with a cream flavor. The menu is deep, so a return will be necessary. For customers wanting to purchase bulk they do sell by the pound and pint. Dave provided a tip that their smoked chicken salad has been a huge hit. They also recently signed on with Order Up for delivery service. Dave's will also continue to provide his incredible bbq to the masses at events large and small. Bottom line up front, this is the best BBQ joint in Hampton Roads. When my wife and I are craving really good BBQ, we will usually drive down to North Carolina (about an hour and a half). Most of the places in Hampton Roads/Virginia Beach are somewhere from OK to good, but not mouth watering like our favorite little restaurant in NC. After a high calorie burning workout in Hilltop, it was time for lunch. Found Dave's on Yelp, and headed on over. No longer will we drive to North Carolina. My wife got a two meat platter with pulled pork, sweet sausage, beans and potato salad as her sides. I got four meats (they only offer two meats, but then they just added the per lb pricing for the other two meats) with Brisket (both flat and point), pulled pork, hot sausage, pulled chicken with the spicy slaw and beans. I also ordered some cornbread muffins, because why not. Go big or go home. Service was quick, and the place is small, with seating for probably about 12. The food was absolutely amazing. Texas could learn a thing or two about how these folks do their brisket. Nice flavorful bark that wasn't too crispy (I'd guess he wraps it in butcher paper about halfway through the smoke, aka "The Texas Crutch"), good smoke ring, and a moist brisket that literally melts in your mouth. It was definitely the highlight of my plate. The spicy sausage was great, not too spicy with a nice snap on the casing. The pulled pork was good, but really - in this area, how could you screw up pulled pork? The chicken was also great. What I got was predominately white meat, tossed in sauce. Moist, smoky, and delicious. The sides were just as good. The spicy coleslaw was made with chipotles, and they weren't overpowering spicy. What really came through was the smokiness of the chipotles, which was a perfect compliment to the BBQ. The beans were great, and had some pulled pork in them as well. The cornbread muffins were moist and sweet, just what I like about cornbread. The only real downside to this place is trying to find it the first time. Look for the white building next to the Shell, and it's on the back right of that building (I'm posting a picture to assist finding it). I love finding new mom and pop joints, and I love BBQ. This place lives up to its 5 star Yelp rating, and then some. If you're in the area, you should definitely check it out. If you're not in the area, it's definitely worth driving to if you're in the mood for BBQ. All the five stars are deceitful....when you find this place it's behind a nondescript business, in a plain building. That's okay. When you don't see any signs of smokers outside or a kitchen in the building, you begin to wonder. The fella at the counter was about as personable as a sack of flour. I did notice that he pulled his glove off using his apron, so I wonder how often he reused it before we got there. Now to the food.... we ordered a brisket platter with potato salad and coleslaw, and 2 separate 2 meat platters- pulled chicken, pulled pork and 2x ribs, with potato salad baked Beans, corn bread and chips. I asked if I could get a bun, and the little fella said it would be $.50. My husband sacrificed his chips so I could have a bun, because who doesn't just throw in a bun on a $60 meal, right? The ribs- undercooked and still hanging onto that bone for dear life!! I would attach a picture but who wants to see undercooked gnawed on bones, right? The brisket-more fat than meat. A picture of the fat left behind will be attached. The pulled pork- it was flavorful, with no fat, which was nice. The pulled chicken, coleslaw and corn bread were all passable. The potato salad was dreadful. The amount of dill in there could put hair on your chest. Between that and the vinegar I looked hard for the pickle, and sure enough, pickle was in there as well. It totally overpowered whatever concept they were going for, as you couldn't taste the potato. The baked beans were sweet. With what I couldn't tell. There was a lot going on there, but mostly black pepper and just weird. Overall, we won't be returning, although we are always looking for a good bbq joint.
